1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesBack up a digital game while it is still downloadable, but do not treat one file as a complete preservation plan. Install the fully patched game with every DLC package, language pack and required redistributable; copy saves and settings separately; preserve any official offline installer; prepare the client for offline use; protect the purchasing account; and test a restore from at least two independent storage copies. A delisted game may continue to run from an existing installation, yet a lost drive, expired account access, missing authentication service or shut-down server can still make that installation useless.
What delisting means for a digital game
Delisting usually removes a title from a store’s search and purchase pages. It does not automatically uninstall a copy already on your drive, and an account that already holds a license may sometimes retain a download button. Those outcomes are not guaranteed across platforms, regions or publishers. A digital purchase is commonly an account-bound license rather than ownership of an unrestricted package. If the store stops serving the files, your account is suspended, the service closes, or the game requires a server that no longer operates, local files alone may not restore access.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
Preservation therefore has several separate targets:
- Game software: the executable, data files and all updates required for the version you intend to keep.
- Additional content: downloadable expansions, language packs, bonus files and runtime components or redistributables.
- Progress and configuration: save folders, profiles, graphics settings, controller mappings, mods and other custom files.
- Authentication: the account, recovery methods and client state needed to launch a license-protected copy.
- Online services: matchmaking, cloud features, leaderboards or account checks that a local archive cannot reproduce.
Online-only games are the hard limit: when their servers or authentication systems disappear, a complete local copy can still be unplayable.

Use this preservation workflow before the listing disappears
1. Start while the title still downloads
Do not wait for a delisting announcement. Open the game’s store page and install it on the platform where you bought it. Let the client finish the download, installation and every available patch. Install all DLC you own, optional language packs, and any runtime or redistributable component the game requests. If a publisher offers separate bonus or soundtrack downloads, save those at the same time.
Record the platform and edition, the purchasing account, the installation path, the game version shown by the client or launcher, and the date of capture. A short text file in the archive can preserve this information even if the store page later vanishes.
2. Confirm a clean first launch
Launch the game once while the platform is online. Allow first-run setup to finish, including shader compilation, prerequisite installation, license checks and creation of a profile directory. Reach the main menu and, if practical, load a save. This catches missing files before you disconnect from the service. Note whether the game asks for a separate publisher account or an internet connection at startup.
3. Use the platform’s supported export when one exists
For Steam, open Library, right-click the game, choose Properties, open Installed Files, and select Backup game files. Valve states: “Only games that completely download, install, and patch through Steam are compatible with this tool.” The resulting backup is therefore not a universal image of every game sold through the client. Valve also recommends testing backups, so copy the output to your archive and perform a restore test before the title becomes unavailable.
Steam’s tool preserves the files Steam manages. It may not include saves, screenshots, mods, configuration files or other custom content, and a restored copy can still depend on Steam’s license checks or the game’s own DRM. Treat the Steam backup as one layer, not the entire archive.

4. Copy saves and settings separately
Save locations differ by game and operating system. Search the game’s documentation and your user profile for folders named Documents, AppData or SAVE, then copy the complete relevant folder rather than a single file. Preserve configuration files, controller layouts, screenshots, mods and mod load orders if they matter to your playthrough. Keep the original directory structure inside a clearly named archive so that you can put files back in the same place after a reinstall.
Write a note identifying each path, the date copied, and whether cloud synchronization was enabled. Cloud sync can overwrite a local file with an older or newer revision, so finish synchronization before copying and avoid opening the game on another device until the archive is secured.

Steam’s Offline Mode can let compatible games run without an active Steam Network connection, but it must be prepared in advance. Start Steam online, sign in, finish pending client and game updates, and launch each preserved game once so that no further installation requirement remains. Make sure the credentials needed for local sign-in are stored safely. Then choose Steam in the top menu and select Go Offline. Valve warns that features requiring a network connection will be unavailable.
Test the game after switching to Offline Mode. Disconnect the computer or block its network temporarily, restart Steam, and launch the title. Record whether the client, a separate launcher or the game itself still requests authentication. If it fails, keep the result in your archive notes; a Steam file backup does not remove DRM or convert an online-dependent game into an offline one.
6. Prefer a genuine offline installer when offered
GOG’s documented process is to open your account library, choose DOWNLOAD OFFLINE BACKUP GAME INSTALLERS, and download every necessary setup file. These installers can be run without the Galaxy application. Preserve all installer parts, patches, DLC installers and any checksum or manifest files together. Label the folder with the game version and date, and keep the files intact rather than renaming parts in a way that could break a multi-part installer.

An offline installer reduces dependence on a storefront client, but it does not guarantee that a game’s online services will survive. Test the installer on a spare folder or machine, apply the saved patches in the documented order, and launch the result without the client. Keep a note of the operating system, prerequisites and any optional language or DLC component needed for a complete installation.

7. Treat console cloud saves as progress backup only
Nintendo Switch Save Data Cloud requires an active Nintendo Switch Online membership, and only eligible games support it. Nintendo describes the service as a backup for save data, not a general archive of the game executable. A cloud copy therefore cannot replace preserving the software itself. Access to cloud backups can be unavailable while the membership is expired.
Before a delisting, verify that the specific game is eligible, allow its save to upload, and also copy any screenshots, user-created content or local settings the game stores outside the cloud-save system. Keep the account that made the purchase secure: Nintendo ties purchases to that Nintendo Account. If the game is removed from redownload, recovery of the account may be the only route to the installed license.
8. Document PlayStation license dependencies
PlayStation’s terms describe a Store purchase as a personal license for private, non-commercial use. Account closure, suspension, service discontinuation or a server shutdown can remove access or functionality. Preserve your PlayStation account email, two-factor authentication recovery codes, receipts and the accepted terms in a secure record. Keep the console’s installed copy and saves, but do not assume that copying those files to another console creates a transferable archive; platform encryption and account checks may prevent that.
9. Make at least two copies and test restoration
Store the archive on two separate media, such as an external USB SSD or hard drive plus another local or offline copy. A second copy on the same drive is not redundancy. Keep one copy disconnected when not in use to reduce the risk of accidental deletion or ransomware.

The external drive is great for keeping your library on hand, but it can't run the new games.
Restore one game to a spare folder or another machine while the storefront and account still function. For a client-based game, install the required client version, import or restore the backup, put the save folder back in its recorded path, and launch in both normal and offline conditions where applicable. For an offline installer, run every installer part, apply patches and DLC, and verify that saves load. Record the date, operating system, client version, result and any missing prerequisite. A checksum (for example, a SHA-256 value generated by your operating system) lets you detect a changed or corrupted archive later.
Platform comparison
| Platform or distribution method | Complete offline installer | Client authentication | Saves and DLC | External-server dependence | Account recovery | Official local backup support |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Steam | Usually no independent installer; Steam Backup game files is available for titles fully downloaded, installed and patched through Steam. | Steam may need to sign in locally; the game can impose additional DRM or a separate launcher. | Saves, settings, mods and some DLC may require separate copying. | Online features and online-only games stop working if their services end. | Keep the Steam email, password, two-factor recovery data and purchase records. | Yes, through Library → Properties → Installed Files → Backup game files, with the stated compatibility limits. |
| GOG offline installers | Yes, when the title supplies “DOWNLOAD OFFLINE BACKUP GAME INSTALLERS”; download every required file. | The installer can run without Galaxy, although the game itself may have online features or its own checks. | Preserve installer parts, patches, DLC installers, saves and settings separately. | Multiplayer, account services and other network features can still disappear. | Protect the GOG account and retain receipts and recovery details. | Yes, via the documented offline-installer download. |
| Nintendo Switch | Not a general consumer export of the purchased game executable. | Redownload and license access are tied to the Nintendo Account that purchased the title. | Save Data Cloud covers eligible saves only; it is not a game archive. | Online modes and any required service can end independently of local data. | Maintain Nintendo Account recovery email, two-factor authentication and receipts. | Cloud-save backup exists for eligible games with Nintendo Switch Online; a general software backup is not established. |
| PlayStation Store | No general consumer offline installer export is established by the cited terms. | Digital products are personal licenses and may depend on the account and platform services. | Back up saves through supported console features and separately document installed DLC; copied data may remain account-bound. | Service discontinuation, suspension or server shutdown can remove access or functionality. | Protect the PlayStation account, recovery methods and proof of purchase. | Local save backup is possible through supported console functions, but it is not a DRM-free game archive. |
How to organize an archive you can actually restore
Use one top-level folder per game and include the platform, edition and capture date in the name. Inside it, separate the client backup or offline installer from folders named Saves, Configuration, DLC, Patches and Notes. The notes should contain the purchase account identifier without exposing a password, installation path, game build, operating system, required runtime, launch method, cloud-sync status and the result of your restore test.
Keep credentials out of the game folder. Store passwords, recovery codes and two-factor details in a reputable password manager or another encrypted record, and keep receipts in a private location. An archive copied to a shared drive or public file host can expose personal information and may create copyright problems.
For large libraries, make an inventory spreadsheet with one row per title. Useful columns include platform, edition, installed version, DLC owned, save path, backup medium, checksum, last verification date and whether the game launched offline. Mark games that require an active server so you do not mistake a successful file restore for a successful preservation of the full experience.
Legal limits on personal game backups
Copyright rules depend on your country and the specific activity. In the United States, the Copyright Office explains that Section 117 permits an owner of a computer program to make an archival copy under specified conditions. Its FAQ notes: “Although the precise term used under section 117 is ‘archival’ copy, not ‘backup’ copy, these terms today are used interchangeably.” The provision is not a blanket permission to duplicate every downloaded copyrighted work, and it does not grant a right to share the copy with friends or upload it.

A separate exemption in 37 C.F.R. §201.40 is narrow. It focuses on eligible libraries, archives, museums and specified preservation activities rather than creating a general consumer right to defeat protection systems. Do not distribute installers, lend account-bound files, sell copies, or bypass DRM solely because you paid for the game. If you live outside the United States, consult the law that applies where you are; exceptions, ownership terminology and anti-circumvention rules differ.
Preserving your own files also does not preserve a publisher’s online service. A private archive may keep a single-player executable safe while leaving multiplayer, cloud synchronization, achievements or account-based content unavailable after a server shutdown.
Common failures and practical fixes
The backup tool refuses to include the game
On Steam, confirm that the title completely downloaded, installed and patched through Steam. Games that use another launcher, separate installers or files outside Steam’s managed installation may not be compatible. Copy the complete installation directory and the separate save/configuration folders as an additional precaution, then document the limitation.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe restored game starts but has no progress
You restored software, not the save data. Locate the game’s Documents, AppData or SAVE folder, copy the backed-up contents into the same user path, and check whether cloud synchronization replaced them. Keep a pre-launch copy of the restored save so you can recover if the client downloads an empty profile.
Offline Mode still asks for a connection
Reconnect while the storefront is still available, finish all updates, sign in, launch the game once, and then select the client’s offline command. A separate launcher or DRM service may still require authentication, and online-only titles cannot be made independent by changing a setting. Record the failure and preserve the account recovery information.
An offline installer reports missing files
Check that every installer part, patch and DLC package was downloaded. Restore them to a clean folder, use the documented installation order, and compare checksums with the values saved at capture time. Missing redistributables or language packs can look like a damaged installer, so include those prerequisites in the archive notes.
The account or cloud save is inaccessible
Use the documented recovery email, two-factor method and purchase receipt before the service changes. Nintendo cloud saves require Nintendo Switch Online and game eligibility; an expired membership can block access to those backups. No cloud service should be your only copy, so rely on the local save archive and the tested software backup as well.
What a successful preservation test proves
A successful restore proves that your stored files, recorded paths and installation instructions are sufficient for that test machine and date. It does not promise perpetual compatibility: operating-system updates, discontinued runtimes, broken authentication servers and hardware changes can introduce new failures. Re-test important titles periodically, refresh at least one independent copy, and update the notes whenever you install a new patch or DLC. The practical goal is not merely to own a folder of data; it is to retain a documented, lawful and repeatable way to reinstall and play the parts of the game that do not depend on vanished services.
