If you already own Ultimechs and it is installed on your PC, use Steam’s built-in Backup game files command before October 20, 2026. Then copy your save and configuration data separately, because a Steam installation backup is not guaranteed to contain personal files or Steam Cloud data. You can restore the files later only with the Steam account that owns the game.
Resolution Games announced that Ultimechs will be removed from VR storefronts on October 20, 2026. The same announcement, reported by UploadVR on October 8, says multiplayer services are scheduled to end that day and that single-player play is expected to remain available. Those are announced plans, not a promise that every platform or future build will behave identically.

What the October 20, 2026 delisting changes
Delisting removes the normal store route for new purchases and downloads. It does not automatically delete a copy already installed on your computer, and it does not turn a backup into a new license. Your practical preservation window is therefore the period before October 20: download or update the game while it is still available to your account, create a local installation backup, and export the files that Steam may synchronize separately.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The ownership distinction matters:
- Already owned and installed: you can make a local copy now and later attempt a Steam restore while signed in to the same account.
- Already owned but not currently installed: download it before delisting if Steam still offers it in your Library, then create the backup.
- Never owned: the available documentation does not promise that a post-delisting user can acquire a new license. A copied installer cannot substitute for account ownership.
The multiplayer shutdown is a separate limitation. A restored installation cannot recreate servers or other online services that have been retired. The announced single-player continuation may remain usable, but its final behavior depends on the build and platform state delivered by the publisher.

Do this before the deadline
Work through this checklist while the game launches and Steam can still validate the installation:
- Sign in to the Steam account that owns Ultimechs.
- Launch the game once and exit normally. This gives the game an opportunity to write its latest local settings and progress.
- Close the game and quit Steam before copying personal files.
- Run Steam’s Backup game files process and save the archive to a different physical drive, such as an external USB SSD or hard drive.
- Make a second copy of the finished backup if you have another drive or other storage available.
- Copy the relevant Steam Cloud and local save folders separately.
- Record the date, the computer used, the Steam account, and the backup location in a text file stored with the archive.
- Test the archive by checking that Steam can see the backup files and, if practical, restoring to a spare library or another Windows installation.
Do not rely on a backup that exists only on the same internal drive as the working game. A drive failure, accidental deletion, ransomware, or a failed Windows installation would remove both copies.
Ultimechs requirements and equipment
The Steam listing identifies Resolution Games as both developer and publisher, gives a September 15, 2022 release date, marks the title “VR Only,” and lists SteamVR support. The listed minimum PC requirements are:

Use Steam’s official backup command
Steam’s backup utility is the preferred method for a title that was completely downloaded, installed, and patched through Steam. Steam warns that games using some third-party installers or downloaders may not be compatible with this process. Ultimechs should be backed up through this utility if your installation came directly from Steam.
Create the installation backup
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Find Ultimechs, right-click its entry, and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Backup game files.
- Choose a destination on a separate drive or other storage. Avoid the same folder that contains the live Steam library.
- Start the backup and allow Steam to finish writing all files. Do not force-quit Steam, put the computer to sleep, or disconnect the destination drive while the process is running.
- When Steam reports completion, inspect the destination and confirm that the backup files are present. Keep a second copy when possible.
Steam explicitly recommends testing backups. An interruption, a full destination, a disconnected drive, or another application locking a file can leave an archive that appears complete but cannot be restored. A simple test is to open Steam’s restore workflow and confirm that it recognizes the backup set. A full test restore to a spare library is stronger because it verifies both the archive and the destination drive.
What the Steam archive does and does not promise
The archive is intended to reproduce the game’s downloaded installation files. It is not a universal snapshot of your computer. Personal saves, settings, screenshots, controller profiles, and files stored outside the core installation may remain elsewhere. Steam’s documentation says third-party save locations vary by developer and advises checking community or developer documentation rather than assuming that every personal file is inside the game backup.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsPreserve saves, settings, and Steam Cloud data separately
Before removing the original installation or replacing a drive, close both the game and Steam. Copy the relevant folders to separate storage and label the copy with the date and source computer. Do not publish an Ultimechs-specific save path as certain unless Resolution Games provides one; the available documentation does not verify a unique path for this game.

Default local Steam Cloud location on Windows
On Windows, Steam documents the default userdata location as:
C:Program Files (x86)Steamuserdata
Inside userdata, Steam uses folders named for account Steam IDs. Those contain game-specific folders organized by app ID. Copy the complete userdata directory, or at minimum the account folder associated with the owning account, to preserve the widest set of recoverable data. Keep the original folder hierarchy intact; do not rename numeric folders because Steam uses those identifiers to match data.
Default locations on macOS and Linux
Steam documents these default paths:
- macOS:
~/Library/Application Support/Steam/userdata - Linux:
~/.local/share/Steam/userdata
The game’s listed PC requirements are for Windows and SteamVR, so these alternate paths are most relevant when you are preserving Steam data from another computer or account rather than planning a supported native Ultimechs installation on those systems.
Copy local files without corrupting them
- Exit Ultimechs normally so its save files are not open for writing.
- Quit Steam completely, including its notification-area process.
- Copy the documented Steam userdata folder and any save or settings folder identified by the game’s community or developer documentation.
- Keep the folder names and hierarchy unchanged in the backup.
- Store the copy separately from the Steam game archive and note which machine produced it.
Steam Cloud can synchronize a newer or older version when you sign in on another machine. Keep an untouched manual copy before experimenting with restores. If Steam asks whether to use local or cloud data, stop and compare dates rather than choosing automatically.

Preservation methods compared
| Method | Preserves the complete installation? | Requires an existing Steam entitlement? | Preserves saves and settings? | Useful after delisting? | Depends on multiplayer services? |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Steam Backup game files | Designed to back up the Steam-installed game files | Yes, for restoration you must sign in to the owning account | Not guaranteed; copy personal files separately | Yes, if Steam accepts the backup and the account owns the game | No for the file operation; restored online features still depend on live services |
| Manual copy of the installed game folder | May copy many installation files, but lacks Steam’s backup packaging and validation | Yes, Steam still controls entitlement and launch validation | Only if you also locate and copy save/configuration folders | Possibly, but reliability is less predictable than the official backup workflow | No for copying; no method can restore retired servers |
| Steam Cloud copy | No; it is intended for synchronized user data, not a complete installation archive | Yes, data is tied to the relevant Steam account | Can preserve cloud-synchronized files, but not necessarily every local setting | Useful for recovering supported cloud data, not for obtaining the game itself | No, but cloud synchronization requires Steam’s service to be available |
| Screenshot or notes of settings | No | No | Preserves configuration information only, not actual save files | Useful as a fallback reference | No |
The safest approach is layered: use Steam’s official archive for the installation, copy userdata and verified local save locations separately, and keep at least two copies on different storage.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Restore the game after delisting
When you are ready to reinstall, use the Steam account that owned Ultimechs and have SteamVR installed or ready to configure.
- Install Steam on the replacement Windows PC or repaired installation.
- Sign in to the account that owns Ultimechs.
- Connect the drive containing the Steam backup files and make sure the files are readable.
- Open the Steam menu and choose Restore Game Backup….
- Select the backup files when Steam prompts you.
- Choose the destination Steam library and complete the prompts.
- Install or update SteamVR, connect the compatible headset, and confirm that the headset is detected.
- Launch the restored game once. Exit it before copying back manual saves, so you know the restored installation itself can start.
- Close Steam, make a safety copy of any newly created userdata folder, and then restore your preserved save and configuration files to their original hierarchy.
- Restart Steam and launch Ultimechs again. Check local progress and settings before deleting any old copy.
If Steam rejects the archive, do not overwrite your only backup. Reconnect the original drive, check that all backup parts are present, and try the restore again in a new library location. A failed restore does not prove that the original files are lost.

What you can expect after multiplayer shuts down
The reported October 20 plan ends Ultimechs multiplayer services. A local restore may therefore let you reach menus or single-player content while online matches, matchmaking, leaderboards, authentication-dependent features, or other network functions fail. The announced expectation is that single-player mode will remain playable, but the final result can depend on the delivered build, Steam authentication, and platform behavior.
Best Value
- HEADSET ONLY. (MAY NOT INCLUDE HEAD STRAP ADJUSTMENT PAD). Controllers and base station purchased seperately
- 5x IMPROVEMENT over first-generation PC VR HMDs.
Plan your backup around the mode you actually need. If your goal is solo play, preserve the installation and local progress. If your goal is multiplayer, a file archive cannot preserve the servers or other service-side state.
Troubleshooting and recovery branches
Steam cannot find the backup
- Confirm that you selected Restore Game Backup… from the Steam menu, not the normal install button.
- Check that the backup drive is connected and that every file created by Steam is present.
- Copy the archive to a local drive temporarily if the external drive is disconnecting or reporting read errors.
- Do not rename individual backup files or move only part of a multi-file backup set.
The restore completes but the game will not launch
- Verify Windows meets the listed minimum requirements.
- Install or repair SteamVR and confirm that the headset is detected before launching the title.
- Update the graphics driver and check that the GPU is at least GTX 1050 Ti or Radeon RX 470 class.
- Restart Steam after connecting the headset and test again.
Your progress is missing
- Exit the game and Steam before making any further changes.
- Compare the dates of the restored local files, your manual copy, and Steam Cloud data.
- Keep the current restored folder untouched, then try the older manual copy in the same hierarchy.
- Do not assume that a missing file means the installation archive is defective; saves may never have been included in it.
Steam asks for a license or will not install
Check that you are using the account that owned the game. The backup process does not grant ownership to another account, and the available documentation does not promise acquisition for someone who never owned Ultimechs. If the account is correct but Steam still refuses the restore, preserve the error message and the original archive rather than deleting either.
Multiplayer no longer connects
After the announced shutdown date, connection failure may be expected rather than a local installation problem. Test single-player separately. Reinstalling Steam, changing graphics settings, or copying saves cannot bring back a service that has been retired.

Long-term backup practice
Keep the Steam archive, userdata copy, and any local save/configuration copy in clearly named folders such as Ultimechs-SteamBackup-2026-10-19. Store a short text record beside them with the owning account identifier (not your password), Windows version, Steam library location, headset model, and the date of the last successful launch. Do not put passwords or recovery codes in that file.
Periodically verify that the storage device still reads correctly. If you migrate to another drive, copy the entire backup and compare file counts or sizes before disconnecting the source. Retain the original until the replacement has passed a restore test. This process protects against storage failure without implying that Steam, Steam Cloud, or the game’s online services will remain available indefinitely.
The practical result is straightforward: before October 20, 2026, create and test a Steam backup, preserve userdata separately, and keep the account that owns Ultimechs. After delisting, those steps give an existing owner the best chance of restoring the local installation and its single-player data, but they cannot create a new license or revive multiplayer servers.
