On Windows and Steam, back up the complete %LOCALAPPDATA%HellraiserSavedSaveGames folder before installing an update. Copy it to a dated folder outside the game installation, such as a USB drive, and leave the original backup untouched. If an update damages or removes progress, close the game, temporarily turn off Steam Cloud for Hellraiser: Revival, restore that dated folder, launch once offline to verify the save, and only then turn cloud synchronization back on.
The official game information confirms Steam Cloud support, but it does not publish console-specific export and import menus. The Windows path below comes from community save-location documentation and can change with a future build, so treat it as version-sensitive.

What this backup protects
A manual copy gives you a rollback point that you control. An update can coincide with a failed save, a damaged profile, or a cloud synchronization conflict. Keeping a separate copy means you can return to the exact files that existed before the update instead of relying on whichever version Steam last synchronized.

Hellraiser: Revival has had progression and save/reload fixes. Saber Interactive’s Update 1.1, for example, addressed a problem in which the lever in a flooded room could fail to appear after saving and reloading during the corpse puzzle. A backup cannot fix a game bug, but it lets you test the updated build without risking your established progress.

Update 1.1 also added a startup notice when the GPU driver is out of date and needs updating. If you see that notice after patching, it is a driver warning, not proof that your save is broken.
Check your Windows installation before you begin
- The procedure applies to the Steam version running on Windows.
- The listed Windows requirement is Windows 10 64-bit, version 22H2 or later.
- Steam lists 80 GB of available storage for the Windows release. Leave enough free space for the update and for a temporary restored copy.
- Exit Hellraiser: Revival completely before copying anything. A running game can still be writing a save, leaving the backup incomplete.
- Have a destination that is separate from the game installation. A dated folder on another internal drive or a 64 GB USB flash drive provides a straightforward offline copy.
The save-location information is community documentation rather than a path published in the official FAQ. If a future version changes the directory, use the current folder created by the game and retain the old backup; do not delete a known-good copy simply because the path looks different.
Back up Hellraiser: Revival saves on Windows
1. Finish a clean save and quit
Let the game reach its normal save point, then exit to the desktop. Wait until the game window and any related process have closed. Do not begin the copy during a loading transition, while quitting, or immediately after a checkpoint.

- Open File Explorer.
- Click the address bar.
- Paste
%LOCALAPPDATA%HellraiserSavedSaveGamesand press Enter.
Using the environment variable is safer than guessing your Windows user name. The folder is under your local application-data directory, not inside the Steam installation directory. If File Explorer says the folder does not exist, launch the game, create or load a save, quit normally, and check the path again. If it is still absent, do not invent a replacement path; the community location is version-sensitive.
3. Copy the entire SaveGames folder
- In the parent directory, select the complete
SaveGamesfolder. - Choose Copy, open a destination outside the game directory, and choose Paste.
- Give the copied folder a dated name such as
Hellraiser-SaveGames-2026-10-19-before-update.
Copy the folder as a unit rather than selecting one file. The folder can contain multiple slots or supporting data, and restoring only one item may produce an incomplete profile. Do not move the original, rename files inside it, or use the backup location as an active save directory.
4. Make the copy independent
Keep the backup on a different drive, or at least outside the Steam library and game directory. A USB copy can remain disconnected while you update. If you use another folder on the same disk, it still protects against a bad patch or cloud overwrite, but not against a disk failure.

5. Preserve the pre-update state
Do not overwrite this dated folder with later saves. Keep it until the updated game has loaded a known-good save, allowed you to play briefly, and written a new save successfully. If you make several update attempts, create a new dated copy for each attempt instead of replacing the first rollback point.

A copy operation completing is not the same as a usable backup. Perform these checks while the original game is still available:
- Open the dated destination and confirm that it contains the copied
SaveGamesfolder, not an empty parent folder. - Check that the destination is outside the game installation and Steam library folder.
- Compare the folder’s visible contents with the original. The names do not need to be interpreted; you are checking that the copy is populated and not obviously truncated.
- If the destination is removable, eject it through Windows and reconnect it once to confirm that the files remain readable.
- Leave the original save folder untouched until the update has been tested.
Do not edit save files to “repair” them. There is no documented file-level repair procedure in the available game information, and changing an unknown file can remove the only reliable rollback copy.
Install and test the update safely
Install normally after the backup
Once the dated copy is secure, install the Hellraiser: Revival update through Steam. Keep the backup available but do not place it back into the live save directory before launching. The first post-update launch should read the current files so you can determine whether the patch itself caused a problem.
Use a controlled first session
- Launch the updated game.
- Load a save whose location and progress you recognize.
- Confirm that the expected chapter, inventory, and recent checkpoint are present.
- Play long enough to reach a normal save point, then quit and relaunch once.
This two-stage check catches both an immediate load failure and a problem that appears when the updated build writes its first save. Keep the dated backup until both launches succeed.
Interpret the GPU-driver notice correctly
Update 1.1 added a startup notice that tells you when the GPU driver is out of date and needs updating. Treat that notice as a compatibility warning. It does not by itself indicate that the save folder was lost or corrupted. If the game loads the correct progress, record the notice separately and address the driver through your normal Windows update process.

Restore a pre-update save when progress is missing
Restore only after closing the game. The order matters because Steam Cloud can upload the damaged or empty state and overwrite the files you want to recover.
1. Stop the game and protect the backup
- Exit Hellraiser: Revival completely.
- Do not alter the dated backup folder.
- If the game created a new or suspicious
SaveGamesfolder, rename it or copy it elsewhere before replacing anything. This preserves evidence of the post-update state in case you need to compare it later.
2. Temporarily disable Steam Cloud for this game
Steam Cloud is listed as a Hellraiser: Revival feature. Before restoring local files, open the game’s Steam properties and turn off the per-game cloud-synchronization option. Steam’s wording and layout can change, so use the setting attached specifically to Hellraiser: Revival rather than a global setting for every game.
The purpose is temporary: it prevents Steam from deciding that the newer, damaged state is authoritative while you restore the older local copy. Do not re-enable synchronization until you have verified the restored save.
3. Replace the live SaveGames folder
- Open
%LOCALAPPDATA%HellraiserSavedin File Explorer. - Move the current
SaveGamesfolder to a temporary holding folder, or rename it so it cannot be confused with the backup. - Copy the dated pre-update
SaveGamesfolder into theSaveddirectory. - Confirm that the restored folder is named exactly
SaveGames.
Do not copy the dated parent folder itself so that you end up with a nested path such as SavedHellraiser-SaveGames-2026-10-19-before-updateSaveGames. The game needs the SaveGames directory directly under Saved.
4. Launch once without cloud synchronization
Start Steam in offline mode or otherwise launch the game while the computer is disconnected from the network, using the method your installation supports. Load the restored progress and check the same chapter, inventory, and checkpoint you recorded before the update. If the save is present, create a fresh in-game save and quit normally.
If the restored progress is still absent, close the game without enabling Steam Cloud. Recheck the path, the folder name, and the date of the backup. Do not cycle through multiple cloud and local launches at random; each synchronization can change which files are considered current.

5. Re-enable Steam Cloud only after verification
After the restored save loads and saves successfully, turn the game’s Steam Cloud setting back on. Steam may present a conflict between local and cloud data. Choose the local files you have just verified as the version to keep, not the newer cloud state created after the failed update. The exact conflict dialog can vary, so read the dates and file locations shown by Steam before confirming.
Keep the dated backup even after synchronization succeeds. Cloud storage is convenient, but it is not a substitute for a separate rollback copy when you are deliberately recovering from a bad update.

The practical choice on Windows is not “manual copy or cloud.” Use both when possible: the manual copy supplies a known rollback point, while Steam Cloud can protect normal play after the update has been proven stable.

The official FAQ confirms Hellraiser: Revival releases for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and Steam. The available official pages do not document console-specific steps for exporting, importing, or manually replacing this game’s saves.
Before a console update, use the saved-data or cloud-management screen provided by your platform, make sure the copy or synchronization has completed, and verify that the backup is visible before starting the patch. This is general platform guidance, not a Hellraiser-specific menu path. Do not assume that a USB export, subscription cloud restore, or local database operation works identically across the three consoles.

If a console update causes missing progress, avoid repeatedly launching and saving over the affected profile. First consult the platform’s own restore controls and select the pre-update saved data by its date. Because the game’s official documentation does not specify the exact menus, the safest advice is to follow the labels shown on your console and retain any separate copy until the restored game loads correctly.

Troubleshooting common backup and restore problems
File Explorer cannot find the path
Confirm that you pasted %LOCALAPPDATA%HellraiserSavedSaveGames into the address bar, not the Windows search box. Launch the game, create a save, quit completely, and check again. If the folder remains missing, the installed build may use a different path; the documented location is version-sensitive and not guaranteed by the official FAQ.
The game loads a new profile after restoration
Close the game and check that the restored folder is directly at %LOCALAPPDATA%HellraiserSavedSaveGames. Look for accidental nesting, a misspelled folder name, or a copy made while the game was still running. Keep Steam Cloud disabled while correcting the local path so that an empty profile is not synchronized.
Steam immediately puts the missing progress back
That indicates cloud synchronization was still active or was re-enabled before the local restore was verified. Exit the game, disable the per-game cloud option, restore the dated copy again, and perform the first test launch offline. Re-enable cloud only after a successful local load and save.

Do not use it as a restore source. Return to the original save folder, close the game, make a new complete copy to a separate destination, and retain the incomplete folder only for reference. A successful copy should contain the populated SaveGames directory, not merely a newly created parent folder.
The update installs but a progression interaction still fails
First verify that you are running the updated build and that your restored save is the intended one. Update 1.1 fixed several progression and save/reload issues, including the flooded-room lever problem during the corpse puzzle, but a backup cannot guarantee that every future defect is resolved. If the same issue persists, preserve the dated backup and avoid overwriting it with repeated test saves.
You need settings as well as saves
The community documentation places Windows settings under %LOCALAPPDATA%HellraiserSavedConfigWindows. That is separate from the SaveGames folder. Back up settings only if you specifically need to preserve configuration; do not substitute the configuration directory for the save directory when restoring progress.
A repeatable pre-update checklist
- Finish a normal save and quit Hellraiser: Revival.
- Open
%LOCALAPPDATA%HellraiserSavedSaveGames. - Copy the entire
SaveGamesfolder to a dated location outside the game directory. - Verify that the destination is populated and readable.
- Install the update through Steam.
- Load a known-good save, play briefly, save again, quit, and relaunch.
- Keep the dated copy until the updated build has passed those checks.
- If progress is missing, disable Steam Cloud, restore the dated folder, launch once offline, and re-enable cloud only after the local restore succeeds.
This sequence separates the three states that are easy to confuse: the untouched pre-update backup, the live files created by the updated game, and the cloud copy managed by Steam. Keeping them distinct is what makes a rollback dependable.
