Keep dated copies on another drive, then copy the required ID folder back after preserving the current one when you need to restore.
Steam Cloud and Xbox cloud saves add another recovery layer, but a local copy is not proof that Frontier can roll back Franchise data held online. If your zoo is absent from every local and platform-cloud version, contact Frontier Support with your account, platform, approximate loss time and any surviving files.

What a Planet Zoo 2 Franchise backup can and cannot do
Planet Zoo 2 launched on October 13, 2026, according to the Steam and Xbox listings. On a Windows PC, its local files can be copied and versioned like any other computer data. This protects the files that exist on your computer at the time of the copy, including the configuration information stored beside the saves.

A local backup may restore a zoo or career state represented in those files, but the reviewed official information does not establish that Frontier offers user-accessible server snapshots, how long such snapshots are retained, or that a local file can reverse an animal trade, conservation-credit change or other transaction stored only on Frontier’s servers.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Local protection: a dated copy of the Windows Planet Zoo 2 folder can protect against local corruption, accidental deletion or an unwanted overwrite.
- Platform-cloud protection: Steam lists Steam Cloud for the PC version, and the Xbox listing identifies Xbox cloud saves. Cloud synchronization can restore a different copy when changing machines or recovering a damaged installation.
- Online-state limitation: cloud or local files should not be treated as a guaranteed rollback of every server-side Franchise event.
Where Planet Zoo 2 stores saves on Windows
Frontier’s support guidance says Windows save games should be in C:Users%username%Saved Games. SteamDB’s current Planet Zoo 2 metadata identifies the game-specific location as:
%USERPROFILE%/Saved Games/Frontier Developments/Planet Zoo 2/{64BitSteamID}/Saves
In File Explorer, the equivalent address using Windows separators is:
%USERPROFILE%Saved GamesFrontier DevelopmentsPlanet Zoo 2
Inside that directory, open the folder whose name is your numeric 64-bit Steam ID. Do not copy only the visible save files. The sibling Config directory contains files matching *_remote.config.xml, so the complete ID folder is the unit to back up.
| Folder or file pattern | Role in a backup | What to copy |
|---|---|---|

Per-account Planet Zoo 2 data directory | Copy the entire folder |
Saves |
Local save-game files | Included automatically when the parent folder is copied |
Config |

Prepare before making a backup
- Close Planet Zoo 2 before copying files. A save that is still being written can leave the backup incomplete.
- If Steam is synchronizing, wait until synchronization finishes before changing or copying the folder. This avoids choosing a half-updated local version.
- Have a second location ready: an external USB SSD, another internal drive, or a separate computer backup. A second copy on the same failing drive does not protect against drive loss.
- Use a dated folder name and retain more than one version rather than overwriting a single backup. For example, include the platform account identifier and the date in the backup folder name.
Choose a backup destination and retention plan
An external USB SSD is a practical optional destination for a second copy of the documented local folder. It keeps the backup separate from the computer that runs the game, so a Windows problem or drive failure is less likely to remove both copies. The procedure does not require a particular SSD brand, capacity or price; the important requirements are that the destination has room for the complete ID folder and that it remains available when you need to restore.

Do not overwrite your only known-good copy after every play session. Keep several dated versions, such as one from before a major habitat rebuild and one from after it. A date alone is not enough when multiple Steam accounts or computers are involved, so record the account, computer and approximate time represented by each folder. This record also helps when Steam displays local and cloud timestamps that do not match your memory.
Keep the original folder on the backup device unchanged. If you want to test a copy, duplicate it first and test the duplicate. Renaming folders is safer than deleting them because an incorrectly chosen version can then be compared with the preserved one.
Windows PC: create a complete backup
- Exit the game. Quit Planet Zoo 2 normally and wait for any Steam Cloud activity to finish.
- Open the parent directory. In File Explorer, paste
%USERPROFILE%Saved GamesFrontier DevelopmentsPlanet Zoo 2into the address bar and press Enter. - Select the correct account folder. Open the folder named with your 64-bit Steam ID. If more than one numeric folder is present, identify the one associated with the Steam account you use for Planet Zoo 2; do not merge folders from different accounts.
- Copy the whole folder. Copy the complete
{64BitSteamID}folder, including bothSavesandConfig, to the external drive or other backup destination. - Create a dated version. Keep the original copy intact and give the destination a date-based name. Make another copy after an important build or before a major change instead of replacing your only known-good version.
- Record its identity. Note the Steam account or platform account, the computer, and the date and time represented by the copy. These details are useful if Steam later offers competing cloud versions.
The copy operation does not need a special Planet Zoo 2 export command. It is an ordinary file copy, but it must be made while the game is closed and must include the account folder’s configuration files.
What to verify after copying
Open the dated destination and confirm that the numeric ID folder is present, then check that both Saves and Config are inside it. This simple visual check catches the common mistake of copying a shortcut, a higher-level folder without its contents, or only the save subfolder. Do not rename the internal account folder or move its two child directories into a different layout; restore the same structure under the Saved Games path.
If you keep copies on more than one device, label each device with the platform account and date. A backup made for one Steam account should not be merged with another account’s folder merely because both directories are numeric. The account folder is the boundary used by this file layout.
How to restore a Windows backup safely
Restoration is a controlled replacement of the local Planet Zoo 2 account folder. Preserve the current files first so that an incorrect choice can be reversed.

- Exit Planet Zoo 2 and Steam activity. Close the game. If Steam is synchronizing, wait rather than copying over files mid-sync.
- Preserve the current installation. In
%USERPROFILE%Saved GamesFrontier DevelopmentsPlanet Zoo 2, rename the existing folder to something such asPlanet Zoo 2-current-before-restore. This leaves the current state available for comparison. - Check the Windows Saved Games location. In File Explorer, enter
shell:SavedGames. The command should open the default Saved Games folder. If it opens nothing, the folder may have been removed. - Recreate a missing folder through Frontier’s procedure. Frontier’s support article provides an attachment named
Restore_Saved_Games_Default_Location.batfor restoring the default location. Obtain that batch file from the official Frontier support page, save it as instructed there, and treat it as executable code rather than as an ordinary document. - Copy the backup into place. Copy the backed-up
{64BitSteamID}folder into%USERPROFILE%Saved GamesFrontier DevelopmentsPlanet Zoo 2. Keep the folder name and itsSavesandConfigcontents intact. - Test before making progress. Start Steam and Planet Zoo 2, open the expected zoo, and verify the correct account and save state before building, trading or otherwise creating new progress.
- Handle a cloud conflict deliberately. If Steam asks whether to use a local or cloud version, stop at that prompt. Compare the dates and the known backup identity, leave the untouched backup in its separate location, and select only the version you have positively identified as correct.
The copy-back sequence above follows the documented folder locations. Frontier’s reviewed support material does not publish a Planet Zoo 2-specific restore checklist, so the preservation and verification steps are safeguards rather than a claim about a hidden recovery feature.
Steam Cloud, Xbox cloud and Franchise connectivity
The Planet Zoo Steam FAQ states: “The Zoos you build and your career progress all support Steam’s Cloud Saves feature so you can play on multiple computers without needing to start again.” The same FAQ states: “Franchise mode will not be available in Offline Mode.” That FAQ is an official Planet Zoo support page, but it is not a Planet Zoo 2-specific statement about server-side rollback or retention.
The Planet Zoo 2 Steam listing includes Steam Cloud and describes Franchise as a mode in which players trade animals with other players. The Xbox listing identifies Xbox cloud saves and lists PC and Xbox Series X|S versions. Cloud data is tied to the relevant platform account and its synchronization state.

Use cloud saves as an additional copy, not as permission to delete every local version. A conflict can present an older cloud file, a newer local file, or a state whose online Franchise transactions are not represented in the files you copied. Keeping several dated local versions gives you something concrete to compare before accepting a cloud replacement.
Account, platform and mode boundaries
A Windows backup is tied to the PC file layout and the Steam account that produced it. Nothing in the documented paths establishes that a copied Steam folder can be imported into an Xbox account, or that an Xbox cloud save can be opened as a Windows file. Treat PC and Xbox as separate recovery paths unless Frontier explicitly provides a transfer procedure.
Franchise’s online requirement also matters during testing. The official FAQ says Franchise is unavailable in Steam Offline Mode, so a restored local folder may not display or validate every online element until the game can connect normally. Do not interpret an offline test as proof that the backup is corrupt, and do not assume that reconnecting will restore an online transaction absent from the local and cloud copies.

Fixing the “Failure to Save” error
Frontier’s official support article says: “The “Failure to Save” error message in Planet Zoo 2 appears when it cannot locate your default Windows ‘Saved Games’ folder.” It also says: “Save Games should be stored in “C:Users%username%Saved Games”.”
Check whether Windows can open Saved Games
- Close Planet Zoo 2.
- Open File Explorer and enter
shell:SavedGamesin the address bar. - If the folder opens, verify that the
Frontier Developmentsdirectory and the Planet Zoo 2 path are present or can be recreated. - If the command opens nothing, follow Frontier’s official procedure using
Restore_Saved_Games_Default_Location.bat. Download the attachment only from Frontier’s support page and handle it as executable code.
Do not use a random batch file from a forum to recreate a system folder. The purpose of the official procedure is to restore the default Windows location that the game expects; it is not a tool for recovering server-only Franchise events.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshooting common restore situations
The backup folder exists, but the zoo is not listed
- Confirm that you copied the numeric 64-bit Steam ID folder, rather than only a higher-level
Planet Zoo 2folder or a single file. - Confirm that both
SavesandConfigcame across. - Check that the restored folder is under the exact Saved Games path and that the account is the same Steam account used to create the backup.
- Keep the renamed
Planet Zoo 2-current-before-restorefolder and the original backup untouched while testing alternatives.
Steam reports a cloud conflict
- Do not choose a version solely because it is labelled “cloud” or “local.”
- Compare the conflict timestamps with the dates you recorded for your backups.
- Preserve both versions until the expected zoo opens and its progress is verified.
The zoo is missing from local files and cloud copies
At that point, a local copy cannot establish whether the missing state exists only on Frontier’s services. Contact Frontier Support and provide the platform, account, approximate time of loss, and any surviving save or configuration files. Do not claim that a USB copy can recover conservation credits, animals or trades that were never present in the local or platform-cloud data.
Moving to another Windows PC
- On the original PC, close the game and make a dated copy of the complete
{64BitSteamID}folder. - On the destination PC, install and start Planet Zoo 2 once, then close it so the expected parent directories can be created.
- Open
%USERPROFILE%Saved GamesFrontier DevelopmentsPlanet Zoo 2on the destination. - Preserve any newly created destination folder by renaming it before copying the backed-up ID folder into place.
- Start Steam and Planet Zoo 2, inspect the zoo, and resolve any cloud prompt by comparing timestamps before accepting a version.
Steam Cloud is designed to let supported zoos and career progress follow you between computers, but retaining your own dated copy prevents one synchronization decision from becoming the only available version.
Backup checklist
- Game closed before copying.
- Steam synchronization finished.
- Correct path opened:
%USERPROFILE%Saved GamesFrontier DevelopmentsPlanet Zoo 2. - Correct numeric 64-bit Steam ID folder selected.
- Entire ID folder copied, including
SavesandConfig. - Copy stored away from the computer’s main drive.
- Date, platform account and computer recorded.
- Older dated copies retained instead of overwritten.
- Current folder renamed before a restore.
- Restored zoo inspected before new Franchise activity.
- Cloud conflicts compared rather than accepted automatically.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where are Planet Zoo 2 saves stored on Windows?
Open %USERPROFILE%Saved GamesFrontier DevelopmentsPlanet Zoo 2 and then the folder named with your 64-bit Steam ID. The local saves are in Saves; the sibling Config folder includes files matching *_remote.config.xml.

Should I copy only the Saves folder?
No. Copy the complete numeric {64BitSteamID} folder so both Saves and Config are preserved.
Can Steam Cloud restore every Franchise transaction?
Steam lists Cloud Saves, and the official Planet Zoo FAQ says zoos and career progress support the feature. However, the available statements do not establish user-accessible Frontier server snapshots or a rollback of transactions stored only online.
What should I do before accepting a Steam cloud-conflict prompt?
Stop and compare the local and cloud timestamps with the dates and account identity recorded for your backups. Keep the separate backup untouched until the expected zoo opens and its progress is verified.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →What if shell:SavedGames opens nothing?
Frontier says the default Saved Games folder may have been removed. Follow the official support procedure using Restore_Saved_Games_Default_Location.bat, obtained from Frontier’s support page, and treat the batch file as executable code.
Can a Windows Steam backup be moved to Xbox?
The documented evidence does not establish a cross-platform import. Windows file backups and Xbox cloud saves should be treated as separate platform recovery paths.
What information should I give Frontier Support if the zoo is gone?
Provide the platform, account, approximate time of loss and any surviving save or configuration files. Explain which local and platform-cloud copies you checked.
Is an external USB SSD required?
No. It is an optional way to keep a second copy away from the computer’s main drive. The essential steps are closing the game, copying the complete ID folder, retaining dated versions and preserving the current folder before restoration.
The Bottom Line
For Windows PC, the dependable procedure is to close the game, copy the complete 64-bit Steam ID folder under %USERPROFILE%Saved GamesFrontier DevelopmentsPlanet Zoo 2, retain dated copies, and restore only after renaming the current folder. Cloud saves can supplement those copies, but no reviewed source promises a user-controlled rollback of Franchise data stored on Frontier’s servers.
