The safest Steam Deck backup uses two layers: Steam Cloud for games that support it, plus a manual copy of saves, screenshots, and important settings to a microSD card or connected storage. Cloud coverage is decided by each game’s developer, so it may omit saves or be disabled. A manual backup works for files outside Cloud, but you must find the game’s actual folders in Desktop Mode. Restore only with the game and Steam closed, then resolve any Cloud conflict by choosing the copy with the progress you want.
What should I back up on a Steam Deck?
Back up three categories separately: game saves, screenshots, and settings or configuration files you would not want to recreate. A save may be synchronized by Steam Cloud, while a custom control layout, graphics configuration, mod setting, or local profile file may remain only on the Deck. Screenshots also need their own check because there is no single official path that covers every game and capture method.

- Screenshots: images captured through Steam or through a game’s own screenshot system. Confirm that the files open from the backup device.
- Settings: configuration files, key bindings, controller layouts, and other user-specific files that matter to you. Copy only what you can identify; replacing an entire game directory can overwrite unrelated files.
Keep each backup labeled with the Steam account, game name, app ID when known, and date. Separate accounts on one Deck keep separate local saves and settings, so an unlabeled folder can be restored to the wrong profile.
Does Steam Cloud back up every Steam Deck save?
No. Steam Cloud is convenient, but support is game-dependent. Valve says Cloud can store game settings, save games, profile statistics, and other user-specific data; the developer chooses which files are included, and Cloud can be disabled globally or for an individual game.

Check Cloud globally
In Gaming Mode or Desktop Mode, open Steam’s client settings and make sure Cloud synchronization for supported applications is enabled. This setting only permits synchronization; it does not add Cloud support to a game that has not configured it.
Check the individual game
Open the game’s Properties and inspect its Cloud Synchronization setting. The Steam store page’s Cloud indicator is a useful starting point, not a guarantee that every save, screenshot, or configuration file is uploaded. Developers determine the file list and behavior.
Let a normal exit finish syncing
Before making a manual copy, connect to the internet, exit the game normally, and wait for Steam to complete synchronization. If Steam reports a failed sync, correct that condition before launching the game again. Ignoring a failed sync can create a conflict and may cause progress to be lost when one copy replaces another.
Where are Steam Deck save files stored?
Start with Steam’s Linux userdata directory, ~/.local/share/Steam/userdata, but do not assume it contains every save. The game’s developer determines the actual save location, and some games place data elsewhere.
Understand the userdata structure
Inside userdata, account folders contain folders named for individual Steam app IDs. The Steam client itself uses app ID 7 for client settings. A folder that looks correct by app ID is still not proof that it contains all of a game’s saves; inspect the files and confirm against the game’s documentation or support information.
When the expected folder is empty
Check the game’s documentation or support forum for its Linux save location. A game may keep saves outside the standard userdata tree, so copying an empty app-ID folder gives false confidence. Record the exact path you found in a text note inside the backup so a future restore does not depend on memory.

How do I prepare a microSD card for a manual backup?
Use a blank or already-cleared UHS-I microSD card rated class 3 or better. Steam Deck supports that specification directly, but formatting erases the card, so move any existing files before you begin.
- Insert the microSD card into the Deck.
- In Gaming Mode, open Steam > Settings > System > Format SD card.
- Read the erase warning and proceed only when the card contains nothing you need.
- Wait for formatting to finish, then switch to Desktop Mode to copy files with the file manager.
A connected external storage device is another local-copy option when you have compatible hardware. Valve documents connected storage generally but does not endorse a particular drive model. Whichever device you use, keep it disconnected after the copy so a mistaken restore cannot overwrite both the Deck and the backup at once.
How do I manually back up Steam Deck saves, screenshots, and settings?
Close the game after a normal online exit, switch to Desktop Mode, locate each required folder, and copy it into a labeled backup directory on removable or connected storage.
1. Exit the game and finish Cloud synchronization
Return to the game’s title screen if possible, quit normally, and wait for Steam’s sync indicator to settle. Do not begin by copying files while the game is still writing them. If a sync failure appears, resolve it first or deliberately choose the local files as your known-good source before continuing.
2. Switch to Desktop Mode
From Gaming Mode choose Steam > Power > Switch to Desktop. Desktop Mode behaves like a normal PC environment, allowing the file manager and other desktop applications to manage files.
3. Create a folder that identifies the backup
On the backup device, create a structure such as SteamDeck-Backup/<account>/<game>/. Replace the angle-bracketed labels with the actual account name or a non-sensitive identifier and game title. Add a date, for example 2026-10-25, when you make multiple snapshots. Include a plain-text note listing the original paths and app ID.
4. Copy the save files
In the file manager, open ~/.local/share/Steam/userdata. Identify the correct account folder and app-ID folder, then copy the save files into the game folder on the backup device. If the game’s documentation identifies another location, copy that location instead and preserve its relative folder structure.

5. Copy settings that are worth keeping
Copy configuration files only after you identify what they control. A small settings folder can preserve key bindings or preferences; copying an entire installation directory may include caches or files that should not replace a fresh install. Keep the original path in your note so each file can be returned to the right place.
6. Locate and copy screenshots
Open Steam’s screenshot manager or search with the file manager. Confirm the game, capture date, and image contents before copying. Store screenshots in a separate subfolder such as Screenshots so they are easy to browse and are not confused with save data.
7. Verify the copy
Open representative image files directly from the backup device and inspect the copied save and settings folders for expected filenames and recent modification times. A backup that contains only an empty app-ID directory is not a usable backup. Eject the device through the desktop environment before removing it.
Which Steam Deck backup method should I use?
Cloud is the easiest first layer, while a manual copy is the dependable fallback for unsupported or incomplete Cloud coverage. The right combination depends on whether you need offline recovery, control over arbitrary files, or access across devices.
| Method | What it covers | Advantages | Limitations | What you must do |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Steam Cloud | Supported game files selected by the developer, potentially including saves, settings, and profile statistics | Automatic synchronization between supported devices | Not every game uses it; coverage varies; it can be disabled or fail to sync | Enable Cloud, check the game’s Properties, and wait for a successful sync |
| MicroSD manual copy | Any files you can locate, including saves, screenshots, and settings | Offline, removable, and directly supported when using a UHS-I class 3 or better card | Requires Desktop Mode and game-specific folder discovery; formatting erases the card | Format the card in Steam, copy files, label the account and game, and verify the copy |
| Connected external storage | Any files you can locate | Useful as a second local copy or for larger collections | Requires compatible connected-storage hardware; Valve does not specify one drive model | Connect the device, copy and verify files, then disconnect it safely |
| Third-party cloud-save software | Potentially arbitrary folders and multiple storage providers | Can target files outside Steam Cloud | Outside Valve’s built-in support and introduces another application’s configuration and failure modes | Use only if you understand its file mapping and keep a separate local copy |
For most owners, enable Cloud and keep periodic manual snapshots for games you care about. Cloud handles convenience; the removable or connected copy protects files Cloud does not include and gives you an offline recovery point.
How do I restore a Steam Deck save safely?
Restore with both the game and Steam closed, copy the backup into the matching account and app-ID locations, then reopen Steam and make an intentional choice if Cloud reports a conflict.
- Exit the game completely. Do not leave it suspended or running in the background.
- Quit Steam so it cannot immediately rewrite the files while you are replacing them.
- Connect the backup device and open the original destination path in Desktop Mode.
- Copy the backed-up files into the corresponding location, preserving the account and app-ID structure. Restore screenshots to their verified destination and settings to the paths recorded in your note.
- Keep a temporary copy of the current files before replacing them. This gives you a way back if the restored version is not the one you intended.
- Reopen Steam and wait for its Cloud check to complete. Do not launch the game until you understand which local or Cloud copy should win.
- Launch the game and confirm the expected save slot, progress, settings, and screenshots. If the result is wrong, close the game before attempting another restore.
What should I do when Steam shows a Cloud conflict?
A conflict means the local and Cloud files changed in different places without being synchronized. Compare their modification times and select the version that contains the progress you want; never choose blindly just to dismiss the dialog.

If the local copy is newer
Choose the local version when the Deck contains the session you most recently completed and the backup or local files show the later modification time. After Steam accepts that choice, let synchronization finish before opening the game.

If the Cloud copy is newer
Choose Cloud when another device contains the progress you need and its timestamp reflects the later session. If you are uncertain, cancel the launch, copy the current local files to a dated safety folder, and then make the selection.
If timestamps do not settle the question
Inspect the actual save slots or profile information after making a safety copy. A timestamp describes when a file changed, not whether it contains the desired character or campaign. Keep both versions until you have verified the game loads correctly.
After a failed synchronization
Valve warns that continuing after a failed sync can lead to lost data. Stop, preserve the local files, and resolve the sync condition before launching again. For a game that never uses Cloud, the manual copy is the recovery path; Steam Support cannot recover a lost save, and the developer may be needed to identify the correct location.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do I move Steam Deck saves to an SD card?
Format a supported card in Steam, switch to Desktop Mode, and copy the game’s actual save folder rather than assuming the whole userdata directory is required.
- Insert a UHS-I class 3 or better microSD card.
- Choose Steam > Settings > System > Format SD card, understanding that formatting erases its contents.
- Switch to Desktop Mode and create a labeled folder for the account and game.
- Copy the relevant save files from
~/.local/share/Steam/userdataor the alternative path identified by the game’s documentation. - Keep the card as a backup, or use the same folder structure when moving the files to another Deck. Restore only with the game closed.
- Open the game after Steam’s Cloud check and resolve any conflict using timestamps and save-slot verification.
Moving a save is not the same as moving a game installation. This procedure protects or transfers user data; it does not copy the game itself or guarantee that a different installation will accept files from another release.
How can I avoid common Steam Deck backup mistakes?
Most failures come from trusting Cloud without checking coverage, copying while a game is open, or restoring files to the wrong account or path.

- Copying during active play: exit normally first so files are not mid-write.
- Using the wrong account folder: label backups by account because each account has separate local saves and settings.
- Restoring only an app-ID folder: verify whether the developer stores saves elsewhere.
- Guessing a screenshot directory: use Steam’s screenshot manager or open candidate files before copying.
- Formatting a card with files on it: move needed data first; Steam’s format operation erases the card.
- Launching immediately after a failed sync: preserve both copies and resolve the conflict deliberately.
- Overwriting the only working copy: retain the current files in a dated temporary folder until the restored game is confirmed.
- Failing to verify: open backup images and check save filenames, dates, and sizes before ejecting the device.
What is the most reliable Steam Deck backup routine?
Enable Steam Cloud for supported games, let each game finish a normal online sync, and make a dated manual copy of high-value saves, screenshots, and settings. Keep the copy organized by account and game, verify it from the backup device, and preserve the previous local files before every restore. This combination covers Cloud-supported progress while giving you control over files and games that Steam does not synchronize.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I back up Steam Deck saves without switching to Desktop Mode?
Steam Cloud can synchronize supported files without Desktop Mode, but a manual file copy requires a file manager. Use Desktop Mode whenever you need to inspect paths, copy to removable storage, or verify screenshots and settings.
Will a Steam Deck save work under a different Steam account?
Do not assume it will. Accounts have separate local save and settings folders, and some games associate progress with an account or profile. Keep account labels in your backup and restore into the matching account structure.
How do I know whether a screenshot was actually backed up?
Open the image directly from the removable or connected storage and confirm the game and capture you expect. Steam’s screenshot manager can help locate Steam captures, while a game’s own capture tool may use a different folder.
What if Steam Support cannot find my lost save?
For games without Steam Cloud, recovery depends on locating the files yourself or obtaining the path from the game’s developer or support information. Steam Support cannot recreate a save that was never uploaded or backed up.
Should I keep more than one manual Steam Deck backup?
Yes, retain at least one older dated copy when space allows. Separate snapshots protect you if a newer backup was made after corruption or if you discover that the wrong account or folder was copied.
