A microSD card, USB drive, or game card is not a documented save-data backup method. Cloud backup requires Nintendo Switch Online; a nearby console-to-console transfer does not, but it moves the save and deletes it from the source. Do not hand over the original Switch until the destination has opened every transferred game and loaded the expected save.
Choose the safe method before you touch the repair console
Nintendo documents three different ways to protect Switch save data. They are not interchangeable, and the right choice depends on whether a game supports Save Data Cloud and whether you have another working console available.

Use Save Data Cloud wherever it is offered. For every game that does not offer it, use an individual nearby transfer to a working Switch. A full system transfer is appropriate when you are replacing the console rather than simply sending it for service, but it has broader consequences for the user, account, and data on the original system.

Install the latest system update
Update the console before starting any backup or transfer. Nintendo’s transfer guidance dated January 2, 2025 assumes you can still operate the system, and an up-to-date console reduces the chance that a transfer menu, account check, or destination download is blocked by different system software versions. Leave the console powered and connected until every operation and verification step is finished.

Check every user and Nintendo Account link
Open the user list and identify every profile whose saves matter. Confirm that the correct Nintendo Account is linked to each relevant user. This matters for Save Data Cloud, and Nintendo’s nearby-transfer instructions require the same Nintendo Account to be linked to the relevant user on the systems involved. Do not start a transfer until you know which profile owns each save.
Make a game-by-game inventory
Write down the games installed on the console, the user who plays each one, and whether Save Data Cloud is available. This inventory prevents a common mistake: backing up the games that support cloud storage while overlooking a non-cloud title that needs a separate console transfer. Include games played from a cartridge and games downloaded to internal storage; the save-protection decision is made per game and user, not by where the game itself is stored.
Method 1: Back up supported saves with Save Data Cloud
Save Data Cloud is the least disruptive option because it creates a cloud copy while leaving the working save on the original console. Nintendo Switch Online membership is required. Availability is game-specific, so a membership does not make every title eligible.
Step-by-step cloud backup
- From the HOME Menu, open System Settings.
- Choose Data Management.
- Open Save Data Cloud.
- Select the user whose save you want to protect.
- Choose the game and start the backup.
- Repeat for every eligible game and every relevant user.
After each backup, remain in the Save Data Cloud screen long enough to confirm that the operation completed. A game appearing in the list is not the same as a fresh backup having completed. If more than one user plays the title, process each user separately.

What cloud backup protects—and what it does not
The cloud method gives you a copy that can later be downloaded to another system while the Nintendo Switch Online membership remains available. It does not cover games that do not support Save Data Cloud, so those titles still need a nearby transfer if the original console is going away for repair.
Cloud backup is also not a reason to erase or reset the repair console early. Keep the original save and console intact until you have completed the rest of your inventory and, where necessary, verified a second-console transfer.
Method 2: Move a non-cloud save to another Switch
For a game without Save Data Cloud, Nintendo’s documented option is Transfer Your Save Data between two nearby consoles. Nintendo says a Nintendo Switch Online membership is not required. Both systems need internet access, must be near one another, and must have the same Nintendo Account linked to the relevant user.

Set up the destination first
- Turn on the working destination Switch and connect it to the internet.
- Make sure the Nintendo Account associated with the source user is linked to the corresponding user on the destination.
- Keep both consoles close together and connected to power if possible.
- Do not launch the transfer until the destination is ready to receive the save.
Send the save from the repair-bound console
- On the source Switch, open System Settings from the HOME Menu.
- Select Data Management.
- Choose Transfer Your Save Data.
- Choose Send Save Data to Another Console.
- Select the user and game you inventoried, then follow the on-screen pairing and confirmation steps.
Receive it on the working console
- On the destination Switch, open System Settings.
- Go to Data Management and select Transfer Your Save Data.
- Choose Receive Save Data.
- Accept the matching source console and user when they appear.
- Wait for the transfer to finish on both screens before leaving the menus.
This is a move, not a duplicate. Nintendo’s warning is explicit: “This does not create a copy of your save data. Once sent, the save data file will be deleted from the source system.” Treat the destination as the only recoverable copy until you have opened the game and checked it.

Verify before shipping
On the destination, launch the transferred game with the correct user. Confirm that the expected profile, progress, world, characters, or other in-game state is present. If a game has several save slots, inspect the slot you actually use. Do this verification for every non-cloud game before you package the original console. If a transfer reports an error, keep the source powered and do not reset, initialize, or send it away; resolve the connection or account issue while the source is still available.
Full system transfer when the console is being replaced
Nintendo also provides a full transfer path for moving to a replacement system. This is broader than moving one save: it transfers the user and associated data. When the process completes, the account, user, and save data covered by the transfer are removed from the original console.
When a full transfer fits
- Use it when the destination is intended to become your replacement system, not merely a temporary place to hold one save.
- Confirm that the destination has enough setup time for the user and associated data to finish moving.
- Plan to verify games after the transfer, especially titles whose save rules differ from cloud-supported games.
Cloud saves after a full transfer
Cloud-backed saves can be downloaded again on the second console while the Nintendo Switch Online membership remains active. This gives cloud-supported games a recovery path even after the original system has been cleared, but it does not turn non-cloud games into cloud-backed titles.
If the console is only going in for repair and you expect to get the same hardware back, an individual cloud backup or nearby save transfer is usually less disruptive than moving the entire user and account data set.

What changes when the destination is Nintendo Switch 2
Nintendo describes a specific rule for a local system transfer to Switch 2. Cloud-supported saves for linked users remain on the Switch and are copied to Switch 2 during that local transfer. Saves for games without cloud support, or saves belonging to users who do not have linked Nintendo Accounts, are deleted from the source during the transfer.
Prepare a Switch-to-Switch 2 transfer
- Link a Nintendo Account to every user whose cloud-supported saves you want handled under the linked-user rule.
- Identify non-cloud games separately; they do not receive the same retention treatment as cloud-supported saves.
- Understand that the local transfer changes the source console, so complete the process only when the destination is ready and you have checked the consequences for each user.
Do not assume that a Switch 2 transfer behaves like a temporary backup. For non-cloud saves and unlinked users, the source copy is removed under Nintendo’s stated rules. If you need a non-cloud save preserved while the original Switch is repaired, first use the nearby Send Save Data to Another Console procedure to a working compatible Switch and verify the result.

The documented Nintendo procedures for protecting save data use either Save Data Cloud or console-to-console transfer. A microSD card can hold downloaded software and other system-managed content, but it is not presented as a user-accessible, transferable save backup in these procedures. The same limitation applies to a USB drive and to the game card itself.

Repair-day checklist
- Install the latest system update while the console still boots.
- Sign in and verify the Nintendo Account linked to each user whose saves matter.
- Check Save Data Cloud availability for every game and complete a fresh backup for each supported title.
- For every game without cloud support, perform an individual nearby transfer to a working Switch.
- Open each transferred game on the destination and verify the expected save, user, and progress.
- Keep the original console powered and connected until every transfer and verification is complete.
- Only after verification, shut down, pack, and hand over the repair console.
Keep your inventory with the destination console or in a separate note so you can repeat the checks when the repaired system returns. Do not initialize, factory-reset, or delete users from the source while a transfer is still pending.
Troubleshooting transfer problems
The game is missing from Save Data Cloud
That normally means the title is not eligible for cloud backup, or you are looking at a different user than the one that owns the save. Check the user selection and your inventory. If the game still is not offered, use the nearby-console transfer instead of treating the absence as a completed backup.
The consoles cannot find each other
Confirm that both systems have internet access, are physically near one another, and have the same Nintendo Account linked to the relevant user. Reopen System Settings > Data Management > Transfer Your Save Data on both consoles and make sure one is set to send while the other is set to receive. Keep the source untouched while you retry.
The destination launches the game but the expected progress is absent
Stop before shipping or resetting the source. Check that you launched the game with the same user selected during transfer and that you inspected the correct save slot. If the expected data is still absent, leave the source available and repeat the account, network, and transfer checks rather than making a second destructive change.
The source console stops booting
Both cloud backup and the documented nearby transfer require you to operate the source system. If it no longer boots, those steps may not be possible before repair. Tell the repair provider that the console contains saves that were not confirmed on a cloud service or destination console, and do not assume a storage card contains a recoverable copy.
How to decide in one minute
- Cloud-supported game and active Nintendo Switch Online: back it up under System Settings > Data Management > Save Data Cloud.
- Game without cloud support: use Transfer Your Save Data > Send Save Data to Another Console and receive it on a nearby working Switch.
- Replacing the whole console: consider Nintendo’s full system transfer, understanding that users and associated data are removed from the original when it completes.
- Moving to Switch 2: apply the separate rule for linked users, cloud-supported saves, non-cloud games, and unlinked users before starting.
- No second console and no cloud support: the documented methods do not provide a local file export to a card or USB drive, so do not ship the console until you understand that limitation.
What to do when the repaired console returns
Before changing anything, check whether the repair service reset or replaced the system. Sign in with the appropriate Nintendo Account, reinstall or insert the relevant games, and download cloud-backed saves where available. For saves that you moved to a temporary destination, continue using that verified copy or follow Nintendo’s supported transfer path back to the repaired console. Launch each game and confirm the expected progress before deleting the temporary copy or changing users.
