How to Back Up and Transfer PokeDaisy Pokémon Save Files Between Android Handhelds

Move the game’s portable .sav or .srm file—not a save state—from the old handheld to the new one. PokeDaisy normally stores saves in Android/data/com.pokedaisy.app/files/saves/. Copy the file whose name matches the ROM, place it in the destination save folder, then launch the same ROM and verify the trainer, party and location before deleting anything from the old device.

Which PokeDaisy file contains your Pokémon progress?

PokeDaisy’s normal in-game progress is a battery-save file ending in .sav or .srm. It is the file you should back up and transfer between Android handhelds. The filename is based on the ROM filename: for example, Pokemon Emerald.gba normally uses Pokemon Emerald.sav. If the ROM is inside a ZIP archive, use the filename of the ROM inside that archive, not the name of the ZIP itself.

A save state is different. It is a snapshot made by the emulator, stored in PokeDaisy’s separate states area, and can capture a game at any moment, including during a battle. Loading an older state can also restore the in-game save to the point at which that state was created. Save states are useful for experiments and difficult encounters, but they are not the normal file for a device migration.

Where PokeDaisy stores saves

Default folder

Unless you selected another location, look in:

Android/data/com.pokedaisy.app/files/saves/

Android may restrict direct access to the Android/data directory, especially on newer versions. If a conventional file manager cannot open it, use PokeDaisy’s own folder picker: open Settings > FOLDERS, choose a user-accessible directory, and use COPY PATH when you need to give another app or computer the exact location.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

Custom folders do not move existing files

Changing PokeDaisy’s saves-folder setting only changes where the app looks. It does not relocate saves that are already in the old folder. Copy the files yourself, and keep the original until the new handheld has been tested.

How PokeDaisy chooses among multiple copies

For a game, PokeDaisy checks locations in this order:

  1. The game’s own folder (including a per-game SAVE FOLDER, if one is configured).
  2. The main PokeDaisy saves folder.
  3. Folders listed in ALSO LOOK IN.

This priority matters when you have copied a save more than once. A stale file in the main saves folder can override a newer file in an ALSO LOOK IN directory. Keep one authoritative copy whenever possible, or remove/rename obsolete duplicates after confirming which file is current.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prepare a clean source copy on the old handheld

  1. Save from the Pokémon game itself. Open the game’s own save menu and wait for the completion message or return to normal play. Do not rely only on an emulator quick-save.
  2. Close the game normally. Exit to the library or close the emulator so the file is flushed to storage. Avoid copying while the game is still running.
  3. Find the configured folder. Start with Android/data/com.pokedaisy.app/files/saves/ if you never changed the location. Otherwise check Settings > FOLDERS and the path shown by COPY PATH.
  4. Match the ROM and save names. Copy the .sav or .srm whose base name matches the ROM. Do not change the extension or add a second suffix such as .sav.sav.
  5. Make an untouched backup. Copy the file to removable storage, a computer, a microSD card, or a synchronized folder. Keep this source copy unchanged until the destination has passed its save-and-reopen test.

A USB-C flash drive is convenient when both handhelds support USB On-The-Go, but check the connector and OTG compatibility for your specific devices. A computer, microSD workflow or selected synchronized folder works just as well; the important requirement is that the exact save bytes reach the new device.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Transfer the save to the new Android handheld

  1. Install and open PokeDaisy. Complete its initial setup and launch the same Pokémon ROM at least once if necessary, then exit. This confirms that the game and emulator core are available.
  2. Choose the destination folder. You can use PokeDaisy’s own saves directory, a per-game SAVE FOLDER, or a shared directory selected through Settings > FOLDERS. If Android blocks Android/data, select a user-accessible USB, SD-card or synchronized folder with the picker instead.
  3. Copy the file without renaming it. Place the matching .sav or .srm in the selected folder. Preserve capitalization, spaces and the extension that PokeDaisy expects for that ROM.
  4. Check for competing copies. Before launching, inspect the game’s own folder, the main saves folder and every ALSO LOOK IN directory. Temporarily move or rename old duplicates so you know which file will be selected.
  5. Launch the ROM. Open the same game, load the normal in-game save and check the trainer name, map location, party, badges and play time. These details identify the intended file more reliably than a filename alone.
  6. Perform a write test. Make a small, harmless in-game change, save through the Pokémon menu, exit normally, reopen the game and confirm that the change remains. This proves that PokeDaisy is writing to the folder you intended.

Choosing a transfer method

Each method below can preserve the exact .sav/.srm file. The practical differences are access, rollback and the risk of leaving multiple active copies.

Method Exact file preserved? Rollback copy Android access considerations Duplicate or sync risk
USB-C flash drive Yes, when copied without modification The untouched source remains on the old device and drive Requires compatible USB-C connector and OTG support; PokeDaisy’s picker can select a user-accessible drive Low for a one-time copy; remove temporary duplicates after testing
Computer transfer Yes Easy to keep dated copies on the computer May require a cable, MTP access or a card reader; direct Android/data access varies by Android version Low if one file is copied back deliberately
MicroSD card Yes Card can retain the original while the destination is tested Both handhelds need compatible removable storage or a card reader Moderate if the same card is left in multiple devices with unsynchronized edits
Synced folder Yes, after synchronization completes Use PokeDaisy’s dated backups and keep a separate versioned copy Both devices must be able to reach the selected folder and its permissions Highest if both handhelds open the game before synchronization finishes or if stale copies exist
PokeDaisy LOAD SAVE Imports the selected external file under the game’s expected name PokeDaisy renames the current save to a dated backup first Uses the app’s file picker, avoiding some restricted-folder problems Lower, because the import is explicit; still check other folders afterward

Verify the destination and fix the wrong-save problem

If the expected progress appears, complete the write test before changing or deleting anything on the old handheld. If a different trainer, location or play time appears, close the game immediately. Do not save over the unexpected progress.

Check PokeDaisy’s search order

Look first in the game-specific folder, then the main saves folder, then each ALSO LOOK IN location. Compare modification dates and, where possible, file sizes. A file in the main saves folder takes precedence over a copy found through ALSO LOOK IN, so an older main-folder file can hide the newer shared copy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the filename and extension

The save must correspond to the ROM’s base filename. A save for Pokemon Emerald.gba will not be selected if it is named for a different ROM, and Android file managers can hide extensions or append an extra one. Enable full filenames and confirm that the final suffix is exactly .sav or .srm.

Check that the game version is compatible

Use the same ROM revision and region when possible. A save can be valid while appearing absent if you opened a differently named copy of the game. Confirm the ROM path and filename before assuming the save was lost.

Use PokeDaisy’s backups as a safety net

PokeDaisy creates dated backups beside the active save in a folder named pokedaisy-backups. At each game start, it copies a changed save and retains the newest 10 different backup copies. These are ordinary files that can also be copied off the handheld.

Restore an earlier backup

Use RESTORE BACKUP when the active save is damaged or you made an unwanted change. PokeDaisy first preserves the current save as another dated copy, then restores the selected backup, so you can reverse the operation if you choose the wrong date.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Import with LOAD SAVE

For a controlled manual import, long-press the game in the library, choose LOAD SAVE, select the external .sav or .srm, and confirm. PokeDaisy renames the current save to a dated backup before writing the imported file under the name the game reads. This is useful when Android permissions make direct browsing difficult or when you want the app to handle the rename safely.

Share one save with RetroArch

PokeDaisy can read and write the same live save that RetroArch uses. In PokeDaisy, open Settings > FOLDERS > ALSO LOOK IN and add the save directory for each RetroArch core you use, such as RetroArch/saves/mGBA or RetroArch/saves/gpSP. When PokeDaisy finds the file there, it works on that file in place, allowing RetroArch to see the latest progress.

Use one authoritative location. If another copy remains in PokeDaisy’s main saves folder, that higher-priority copy can win instead of the RetroArch file. After configuring the folder, open the game in one emulator at a time, save normally, close it, and then launch the other emulator. Confirm the trainer and location before making further progress.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Use a synchronized folder safely

A Syncthing-style synchronized folder can be selected as PokeDaisy’s saves folder. PokeDaisy searches the selected folder itself; nested version-history directories such as .stversions are not treated as active saves.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Let synchronization finish on the first handheld before opening the game on the second. Opening both devices while a file is still being transferred can expose a partial or conflicting update. For important games, keep an additional dated copy outside the synchronized directory and rely on PokeDaisy’s 10 rotating backups for quick rollback.

Save files versus save states

Feature In-game save (.sav/.srm) PokeDaisy save state
Created by The Pokémon game’s own save command The emulator’s state command at an arbitrary moment
Typical location Configured saves folder, game folder or shared folder Android/data/com.pokedaisy.app/files/states/
Best use Device transfers, long-term backups and interoperability Quick experiments, difficult battles and temporary checkpoints
Compatibility Portable when the ROM and emulator support the format Usually tied to the emulator, core and state format
Risk when loaded Loads the game’s recorded progress Can roll the game’s in-game save back to the state’s earlier moment

PokeDaisy exposes 10 save-state slots. Treat those slots as convenience snapshots, not as your migration archive. For a move between handhelds, copy the normal save and keep states only if you specifically need to continue an experiment at an exact moment.

Upgrading from PokeDaisey to PokeDaisy

PokeDaisy 1.1.0 changed the app name from PokeDaisey to PokeDaisy. Android treats the renamed package as a new application, so saves stored privately under Android/data/com.pokedaisey.app/ are not automatically carried into com.pokedaisy.app.

  1. Before uninstalling the old app, copy its saves out of Android/data/com.pokedaisey.app/ to a computer, USB drive, microSD card or user-accessible shared folder.
  2. Install PokeDaisy and complete first-time setup.
  3. Select the saved external folder, or copy the files into the new app’s configured saves directory.
  4. Open the ROM and perform the trainer/location check and write test.

If your saves were already in a user-selected folder, such as a RetroArch directory, you can select that same folder during PokeDaisy’s setup instead of extracting files from the old private package directory.

Troubleshooting common transfer failures

The game starts with no save

  • Confirm the file is .sav or .srm, not a save-state file.
  • Match the save’s base filename to the ROM, including spaces and punctuation.
  • Check whether the ROM is zipped and use the filename of the ROM inside the archive.
  • Verify that PokeDaisy’s configured folder is the folder where you placed the file.
  • Launch the same ROM revision and region used on the old handheld.

The wrong progress appears

  • Close the game without saving.
  • Inspect the game folder, main saves folder and ALSO LOOK IN locations for duplicates.
  • Remember that the main saves folder has priority over an ALSO LOOK IN copy.
  • Move stale files out temporarily, then relaunch and check the expected trainer and location.

Android will not let you open Android/data

  • Use Settings > FOLDERS and the built-in picker to select a user-accessible directory.
  • Use COPY PATH to confirm the exact selected location.
  • Import through the game’s long-press menu and LOAD SAVE.
  • Transfer through a USB-C drive, computer or SD card into the folder chosen by PokeDaisy rather than forcing access to a restricted private directory.

The save changed back after using a save state

Loading an older state can restore the in-game save as it existed when that state was made. Exit the state, load the most recent normal in-game save or restore an appropriate dated backup, then make a new in-game save before continuing.

A synced save is inconsistent

  • Close the game on both handhelds.
  • Wait for synchronization to report completion.
  • Choose the device containing the intended progress as the authoritative copy.
  • Copy that file to a separate backup, allow it to synchronize, and open the game on only one handheld for the next test.

Recommended maintenance routine

  1. Save through the Pokémon game menu before every transfer or backup.
  2. Close the game and copy the matching .sav/.srm file while it is not in use.
  3. Keep at least one external copy and leave the original untouched until verification.
  4. Use one active folder, especially when sharing with RetroArch or synchronization software.
  5. After moving the file, check trainer, location, party and play time, then save, close and reopen.
  6. Use PokeDaisy’s dated backups and RESTORE BACKUP before attempting risky repairs.
