Let Steam Cloud finish syncing, then make a separate copy of the demo’s actual save folder. On the destination computer or Steam Deck, install the same demo or the full game, run it once, quit, and copy the backup into the matching save location. Keep Cloud disabled temporarily if it would download a blank or older file, and preserve the original backup until the transferred progress has been verified.
A demo save continues in the full game only when the developer made the save format and storage compatible, added an import routine, or configured shared Steamworks Cloud storage between the demo and full-game app IDs.

What Steam Cloud does—and what it does not do
Steam Cloud is an optional synchronization service, not a universal save-file backup. Valve describes it as storage hosted by Steam that games and the Steam platform can use. A supported game may synchronize settings, save games, profile statistics, and other user-specific files, then download those files before the game launches on another computer.
Cloud behavior belongs to each game. Many games do not use Steam Cloud at all, some synchronize only selected files, and a developer can configure different paths or rules for Windows, macOS, Linux, and SteamOS. If a save never synchronized, Steam cannot recover it after the original computer is lost or its drive is erased.

The safest approach therefore has two layers:
- Cloud synchronization: convenient for supported games and ordinary computer-to-computer moves.
- A dated manual copy: an independent recovery point you control before changing files or resolving a conflict.
Using both prevents the most common failure: assuming that a green Cloud status means every local save is safely stored online.
Before moving a demo save
Confirm that the game actually uses Steam Cloud
Open the game’s Steam store page or its Library entry and choose Properties. The Cloud section should show whether Steam Cloud is enabled for that title. This setting is game-specific; a global Steam setting does not make an unsupported game synchronize.
Start the demo, save through its normal in-game menu, and exit through the game’s menu rather than forcing the process closed. Wait for Steam to show that synchronization has completed before making your copy. If Steam is still uploading, a manual copy made immediately may capture an older version.
Identify whether you are moving a demo or changing editions
A demo and its full game normally have different Steam application IDs. Steam uses those IDs to organize Cloud data, so installing the full game does not by itself make it read the demo’s files. Automatic continuity requires developer support, such as a compatible file format and path, an in-game import prompt, or Steamworks Shared Cloud Storage configured for both app IDs.
Plan for the destination platform
A Windows save may not work on macOS, Linux, or SteamOS even when both versions are sold through Steam. Steamworks supports platform-specific path overrides and cross-platform synchronization only when the developer configures them. Proton can also place a Windows game’s files inside a per-game compatibility prefix on Linux or Steam Deck.
Where Steam demo saves are stored
There is no single save directory for all Steam games. Developers choose whether to use a folder in the user profile, a publisher directory, the game’s installation tree, or a Proton prefix. Look for the game’s documented save location before copying anything.

Inside userdata, account folders and numeric app-ID folders identify Cloud data. These paths are useful when checking what Steam synchronized, but they are not proof that the game’s working save is located there. Copying only an app-ID folder can miss a save that the game keeps elsewhere.

Common game-controlled locations
Depending on the title and operating system, inspect:

- The game’s Proton tree, such as
compatdata/<appID>/pfx/, on Linux or Steam Deck
Do not assume the Steam installation directory contains the save. If the developer’s support page names a different path, use that path. When documentation is unavailable, create a test save, quit, and inspect recently modified files to distinguish the active save from old installers, logs, or configuration files.
Step-by-step: make a dependable manual backup
1. Finish a clean Cloud sync
- Launch the demo and load the save you want to move.
- Save normally and exit through the game’s menu.
- Wait until Steam reports that Cloud synchronization has finished. Do not shut down the computer while an upload is pending.
This establishes the newest known state before you work with local files.
2. Close the game and Steam writes
Quit the game completely. If Steam still shows the title as running, wait for the process to end. A save file can be incomplete or locked while the game is open, and copying during an autosave can preserve a partially written file.
3. Copy the entire save folder
Copy the whole folder that contains the demo’s saves, not just one file whose name looks familiar. Keep filenames, extensions, subfolders, and capitalization unchanged. Paste the copy to a USB flash drive, portable SSD, or another backup location in a new folder named with the game and date, for example DemoName-save-2026-10-19.
Do not move the only copy; duplicate it. Leave the source folder untouched until the destination has loaded the expected progress.
4. Record identifying details beside the backup
Create a plain-text note in the dated backup folder containing:

- The source operating system
- The full original save-folder path
- The backup date and approximate time
- Whether Steam Cloud was enabled and had finished syncing
This information prevents a demo folder from being confused with the full game when both are installed, especially where their app IDs differ.

5. Understand Steam’s Backup Feature limitation
Steam’s built-in Backup and Restore feature can create backup files for installed games. Valve notes that third-party save locations vary, so save files may still need to be copied back manually after a restore. Treat that feature as an installation backup, not as a substitute for a direct copy of the game’s save folder.
Step-by-step: transfer the save to another computer
1. Install the correct title
On the destination machine, install the same demo first if you are testing a straight demo transfer. If you bought the full game, install that instead only when the developer documents demo import or shared storage. Sign in to the Steam account that owns the destination installation.
2. Run once, then quit
Launch the destination title once and let it create its folders. You do not need to overwrite a new slot; reaching the main menu is usually enough. Quit normally so the game closes its files before you replace them.
3. Prevent an unwanted Cloud download
If Steam immediately downloads a blank, older, or incorrect save, disable Cloud temporarily for that game in Properties. Do this before copying the backup. A publisher’s support article may prescribe a different sequence, so follow title-specific instructions when they exist.
4. Copy into the matching destination path
Open the save location created by the destination installation and paste the backed-up files into it. Preserve the folder structure and filenames. For a Proton game, the correct location may be inside the destination app’s compatdata/<appID>/pfx/ tree rather than in the native Linux home directory.
Do not paste a demo save into an arbitrary Steam library folder. The full game can read it only if its expected path and file format match, or if it provides an import process.
5. Launch and verify before re-enabling Cloud
Start the game and check the exact slot, chapter, options, or unlocks you expected. If the progress is correct, quit normally. Re-enable Steam Cloud and allow the intended local files to upload. Keep the untouched manual backup until you have restarted the game at least once and confirmed that the progress remains.
Moving a demo save into the full game
When the transfer is automatic
The full game can recognize demo progress automatically when the developer designed the two products to share compatible files or configured Steamworks Shared Cloud Storage. Valve’s Steamworks documentation identifies sharing saved games between a demo and a full game as a common use for shared Cloud storage. In this case, the full game may display the demo’s progress after Cloud finishes syncing, or it may show an in-game import prompt.

When an import prompt is required
Some developers deliberately require an import command, a menu option, or a one-time confirmation so that players can choose which demo slot to carry forward. Look for an option such as Import demo save in the full game’s title screen or support documentation. Follow its instructions rather than renaming files by guesswork.
When there is no official bridge
If the demo and full game use unrelated app IDs, paths, or file formats, the full game may ignore copied files or report them as corrupt. A manual copy can work only when the developer has documented the required folder rename, filename change, or format conversion. Those details cannot be inferred from Steam’s general Cloud documentation.
Before attempting an unofficial placement, preserve the original demo folder and the newly created full-game folder. Make one change at a time so you can undo it. Never overwrite the only copy of a working save.

Handling Steam Cloud conflicts safely
A conflict means Steam found different versions of synchronized files—usually one changed locally and another changed on a different computer or in Cloud storage. The conflict dialog asks which version to keep.
- Do not choose immediately. First copy the local save folder to a separate dated location.
- Compare the modification times shown for the local and Cloud versions.
- Choose the version whose slot or progress is known to be the one you want.
- Launch the game and verify the result before deleting any copy.
Modification time is evidence, not a guarantee: a clock change or a game that rewrites files on launch can make timestamps misleading. If both versions contain different valuable progress, keep both manual copies and decide which one to archive before allowing Steam to overwrite the other.
Steam warns that Cloud data may not be recoverable after it is replaced. A manual backup made before selecting a conflict option is therefore the recovery point.

Windows to macOS or Linux
Cross-platform Cloud synchronization works only when the developer has configured compatible paths and file handling. A Windows save may contain platform-specific settings or use a format the macOS or Linux build cannot read. If the game offers separate platform instructions, use those rather than copying the entire Windows profile.

Many Windows games run on Steam Deck through Proton. Their saves can reside in the game’s per-app Windows-like prefix, commonly under compatdata/<appID>/pfx/. The app ID in that path belongs to the installed destination title, so a demo and full game can have different prefixes even when their names are similar.

Install and launch the title on the Deck once before copying. If Cloud is enabled, wait for its download to finish or disable it temporarily when the downloaded files are not the desired version. Use Desktop Mode to locate and copy files, then return to Gaming Mode to verify the save in the game.
Linux native builds
A native Linux build may use a home-directory path rather than a Proton prefix. Check which compatibility tool the game is using before deciding where to paste the backup. Copying files into a Proton prefix will not help a native build that reads ~/.local, and the reverse is also true.

Troubleshooting by symptom
The destination starts with a blank save
- Confirm that the source demo actually saved and completed Cloud synchronization.
- Check that you copied the real save folder rather than Steam’s installation directory.
- Verify that the destination uses the same title, region, edition, and app ID expected by the files.
- Disable Cloud temporarily, replace the local files, and launch again.
If the game still shows no progress, the destination build may use a different format or path. Consult the developer’s title-specific instructions.

Close the game, preserve both local and Cloud versions, and resolve the conflict using timestamps and known progress. If Steam downloads the unwanted copy before you can replace files, disable Cloud for the title, restore the manual backup, verify locally, and re-enable Cloud only after the correct files are loaded.
The demo save is visible, but the full game rejects it
Different app IDs do not imply compatibility. Check whether the developer supplies an import option or names a required rename or conversion. Without such support, the full game may not be able to interpret the demo’s data.
The save cannot be found on Steam Deck
Determine whether the game is running natively or through Proton. For Proton, inspect the destination app’s compatdata/<appID>/pfx/ tree; for a native Linux build, check the documented home-directory path. A demo and full game can place files in separate app-ID folders.
The old computer is unavailable
Steam can download only files that had already synchronized successfully. If the game did not support Cloud or the save was never uploaded, Steam has no general recovery mechanism. Search any removable drive or dated backup you made; otherwise, the unsynchronized local save may be unrecoverable.

A repeatable backup checklist
- Check the game’s Cloud setting and title-specific save documentation.
- Save in-game, exit normally, and wait for synchronization to finish.
- Locate the developer’s actual save folder, not merely the Steam library folder.
- Copy the entire folder to dated removable or separate storage.
- Record the demo name, app ID, operating system, path, and backup time.
- Install the destination title and run it once to create its folders.
- Disable Cloud temporarily if it would download an unwanted file set.
- Paste the backup without renaming files unless the developer documents a change.
- Launch, verify the expected progress, quit normally, and then allow the correct files to sync.
- Keep the untouched backup until the transfer has survived a second launch.
Key points to remember
Steam Cloud is convenient but optional and game-dependent. The game’s developer controls the real save location, while Steam’s userdata folders identify Cloud data. A separate dated copy is the safest protection against a failed sync or an incorrect conflict choice. Demo-to-full continuation is a compatibility feature implemented by the developer, not an automatic consequence of owning both products. When moving between Windows, macOS, Linux, and SteamOS, verify platform support and account for Proton prefixes before replacing files.
