Use a layered backup, not just a save-file copy
A Fallout 4 save records your character and world state, but it does not recreate every part of the setup that produced it. A patch can change the game executable, plugin behavior, Creations load order, or the configuration files that a mod manager uses. A recoverable pre-update snapshot therefore has several layers:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Save files: the actual Fallout 4 saves you want to keep.
- Mod archives: the downloaded ZIP, 7z, or other installation packages you may need to reinstall.
- Mod-manager profile data: profiles, enabled/disabled states, and manager-specific metadata.
- Plugin and load-order records: an exported text file, manager export, or screenshots showing the exact order before the patch.
- Custom configuration: Fallout 4 INI files and any other hand-edited settings.
- A written snapshot: the game build, date, mod manager, and other details that identify the working state.
Keep the original copy unchanged. Use it as a known-good source if you later need to diagnose a crash or missing content.
Back up Fallout 4 saves on Windows PC
Find the default save directory
Bethesda Support gives the standard Windows location as C:Usersuser.nameDocumentsMy GamesFallout4Saves. Its instruction is to navigate to that directory and copy the save files you want to back up: Bethesda’s PC save-backup instructions.

The folder is under the Windows user account that runs the game. If you use redirected Documents folders, cloud-synced Documents, or a nonstandard Windows profile, search for the Fallout4Saves folder rather than assuming the displayed path is unchanged.
Copy the files while the game is closed
- Exit Fallout 4 to the desktop. Also close the launcher and your mod manager so neither program is writing a save or profile file.
- Open the
Fallout4Savesdirectory. - Select the saves you want to preserve. Copy them; do not move them.
- Create a clearly named folder on a different drive, for example
Fallout4-pre-update-2026-10-19, and paste the files there. - Open the destination and confirm that the copied files are present before you start the update.
A dated folder name prevents a later backup from silently replacing the one that still represents the pre-update game.
Make the copy independently verifiable
After copying, compare the number of files and their sizes between the source and destination. Open a few file properties dialogs if you need a quick check. Do not launch or resave the game from the backup folder; it should remain an untouched reference.
Preserve the mod setup that those saves depend on
A save can load differently when a plugin is missing, disabled, or placed in a new position. Back up the installation inputs and the profile that defines them, not only the save directory.
Keep downloaded mod archives
Locate the archive repository used by your mod manager and copy the downloaded packages to the backup drive. If you normally delete archives after installation, download or retain the packages before updating so you have the same files available for a reinstall. Preserve the original filenames where possible; they make it easier to identify versions and avoid confusing similarly named files.

Do not assume that an online mod page will always provide the same file. Authors can replace, hide, or update a download, and an update may leave an older plugin incompatible with the new game build. Your local archive is the stable copy of what was installed on the date you recorded.
Save the mod-manager profile
Use the manager’s own profile, backup, or open-in-folder function to identify the directory that contains your profile data. Copy that directory with the archives. A profile commonly preserves which mods are enabled and may contain deployment or virtual-file information that a plain list cannot reconstruct.

If the manager offers an explicit profile export, create it as well as copying the profile folder. Store the export beside the archives and saves, and note which manager and manager version created it.
Export the plugin and load order
Use the manager’s export command to create a human-readable plugin or load-order file. If no export is available, capture the enabled-plugin list and its order with screenshots. Include the date in the filename, such as plugins-pre-update-2026-10-19.txt.
The order matters because two installations can contain the same plugins but produce different results when their positions differ. A text export is also useful when you need to compare the pre-update state with the order that exists after a patch.

Copy custom INI files and related configuration
Back up any Fallout 4 INI files you edited manually, plus configuration files created by your mod tools. Keep them in a separate Configuration folder inside the dated backup and record which settings you changed. Do not overwrite a newly generated configuration immediately after an update; retaining both versions helps identify whether a setting caused a problem.

Record exactly what was working
Create a short text note in the backup folder with:
- the Fallout 4 build or version shown by the launcher or platform;
- the date and time of the backup;
- the mod manager and its version;
- the enabled plugins and their order, with the export filename;
- any unusual launch arguments, script-extender dependency, or custom INI change you rely on;
- the character and save names you intend to test after the update.
This record distinguishes a game-update problem from a later change you made while troubleshooting. If your tools do not provide an export, screenshots of the manager’s plugin and profile pages are better than relying on memory.
Keep the backup on a separate destination
Copy the dated folder to a portable external SSD or HDD. That recommendation applies Bethesda’s instruction to copy the files while protecting the copy from a failed system drive or an accidental in-place overwrite; it is a practical precaution, not a Bethesda storage requirement.
When available, add a second cloud copy of the same folder. Treat cloud storage as an additional layer, not the only copy: synchronization can propagate an accidental deletion or an already-modified file. Disconnect or lock the external drive after verification if you want the strongest protection against an update or manager operation changing the backup.

Control when the update installs
Automatic patching can remove your opportunity to capture the working state. Before launching the game, use your platform’s delayed-update, pause-download, or offline option where supported. The exact control and availability differ by storefront and console, so confirm the setting in that platform’s current help pages.
Check Bethesda announcements and the notices from the authors of the mods you use immediately before installing. Update timing, compatibility information, and the contents of a future patch can change. Do not treat an old compatibility statement as confirmation for a new build.
Archive a console load order before the update
Console players generally cannot copy the Windows save directory or preserve mod archives in the same way. For supported Fallout 4 Creations workflows, Bethesda’s official notice says: “To avoid load order complications, please save your console load order prior to the May 27th 2026 Fallout 4 update.” It directs players to choose Save Load Order to Bethesda.net: Bethesda’s Console Creations storage and load-order notice.
Save the order through the Creations interface
- Launch Fallout 4 on the console while it is still on the pre-update build.
- Open the Creations menu and wait for your account and installed Creations list to load.
- Choose the command labeled Save Load Order to Bethesda.net.
- Wait for the confirmation that the order has been saved before leaving the menu.
- Take screenshots of the enabled Creations list and order as a local reference, because online availability and interface behavior can change.
The Bethesda.net archive is an online load-order record, not a local copy of every mod archive. Its usefulness depends on the console, account access, service availability, and the state of each Creation after the update. Keep screenshots and written notes even when the online save succeeds.

| Capability | Windows PC | Supported console Creations workflow |
|---|---|---|
| What you can copy locally | Windows saves, downloaded mod archives, mod-manager profiles, plugin exports, screenshots, and custom INI files. | Screenshots and notes; the Windows save directory and PC mod-manager folders are not available. |
| Load-order archival | Export a plugin or load-order file from the manager, or record the order with screenshots. | Use Save Load Order to Bethesda.net when the Creations interface and service support it. |
| Restoration speed | Copying a dated folder back is quick once the external drive is connected; reinstalling or redeploying mods may still take additional time. | Reloading an online order can be quicker than rebuilding it manually, but it depends on account access, service availability, and each Creation remaining available. |
| Mod-archive capacity | You can retain the actual downloaded archives on an external drive or another storage location. | The online load-order archive records the order; it is not a local archive of all mod packages. |
| Dependence on online services | A local save and profile backup can be restored without an online archive, although downloading a missing package may require network access. | The Bethesda.net load-order record requires the relevant account and service to be available. |
Restore safely after a problematic patch
If the update causes crashes, missing content, or a load order that no longer behaves as it did, preserve evidence before changing more files.

- Exit the game. Do not continue saving into the affected state; a new save can make it harder to identify the original failure.
- Preserve the post-update state. Copy the current saves, profile, plugin list, and configuration to a separate folder. This gives you material for diagnosis and a way back if the update is later fixed.
- Confirm the backup date. Choose the untouched folder created before the patch, not a folder that was synchronized or edited afterward.
- Restore the profile and mod files. Use the manager’s import or profile-restore function where available, then restore the archived mod packages and the recorded plugin order.
- Restore custom configuration selectively. Keep the post-update INI files aside and test the pre-update files only when you know they belonged to the working build.
- Copy the pre-update saves back. With the game closed, place the backed-up saves in the active
Fallout4Savesdirectory, keeping the newer files in a separate diagnostic folder. - Test methodically. Start with the recorded load order and one known-good save. Change one variable at a time rather than reinstalling everything repeatedly.
A save made with mods can appear to be missing even when it still exists. Bethesda’s support guidance recommends checking the relevant profiles and viewing all saves when modded saves do not show up: Bethesda’s missing-modded-saves support article.
Troubleshoot common backup failures
The copied saves are not visible
Verify that you copied from the Windows account and Documents location used by the game. Check the active profile in your mod manager, then use the game’s option to view all saves. If the save was created with a mod, restore the matching profile and plugin order before concluding that the file is gone.
The game loads but content is missing
Compare the post-update plugin list with the pre-update export. Confirm that the required archives are present and that the manager has deployed or enabled the same profile. A save can open while still missing objects when a dependency is absent, so stop testing on a new save until the original order is restored.

Import the dated profile backup, then point the manager at the archived downloads if it supports a local repository. If the manager has changed versions, keep the old export and screenshots; they provide a reference even when the new interface cannot import every setting.
The console archive does not restore cleanly
Check that you are signed into the same Bethesda.net account used to save the order and that the Creations service is reachable. Compare the online order with your screenshots, because a removed, unavailable, or updated Creation can prevent an exact reconstruction.
What this method cannot guarantee
A backup protects your files and documents the setup; it cannot make an incompatible mod compatible with a new executable. The exact behavior of a Bethesda update, the availability of a Creation, and the restoration tools exposed by a platform can change. Keep the pre-update copy untouched, consult current Bethesda and mod-author notices, and test with a duplicate working copy before committing new saves to the updated installation.
