Make a dated copy of your complete E-Day save folder before installing or updating any mod. Close the game first, identify the storefront you use, and keep the copy in a second location without removing or overwriting the original. For Steam, SteamDB’s cloud-file manifest lists %USERPROFILE%/AppData/Local/MicrosoftGears of War E-DaySaves{64BitSteamID} with *.sav files. Xbox App and Microsoft Store installations can use different locations, so do not apply the Steam path to those builds.
What to back up before modding E-Day
A reliable pre-mod backup has two parts: the entire local save directory and, when a mod’s instructions call for it, the files that the mod changes. The save copy protects campaign progress. A separate copy of modified content or configuration files makes it possible to remove a mod cleanly, but it does not replace the save backup.

Start by determining whether your copy of E-Day is installed through Steam, the Xbox App, or the Microsoft Store. Save locations are not guaranteed to match between storefronts. Epic notes that games can use different save folders, and Unreal Engine documentation says non-development platforms vary to accommodate their file systems. A path from another Gears title or another Unreal Engine game is therefore not evidence that it is correct for E-Day.

Steam
For the Steam build, SteamDB’s E-Day cloud-file manifest lists this location:

The manifest lists a *.sav pattern there. In Windows File Explorer, paste the path into the address bar, replacing {64BitSteamID} with the account-specific directory that exists on your computer. The braces in the manifest identify a variable directory name; they are not normally part of the literal folder name.

If the directory is not present, launch E-Day, create or load a campaign save, exit the game, and check the location again. This discovery step causes the game to create or update a local save; it is not a substitute for making the backup.
Xbox App and Microsoft Store
No single, authoritative E-Day Windows path for Xbox App or Microsoft Store installations is established here. Do not copy the Steam path into an article or checklist for those versions as though it were universal. Instead:
- Confirm which Windows storefront installed the game.
- Use the game’s own save or mod documentation, or the mod manager’s instructions, to identify the active save directory for that storefront.
- Look for the directory only after you have created a campaign save and exited the game.
- Verify that the folder contains the current save files before copying it.
Unreal’s documentation states that development-platform saved games use the .sav extension in a project’s SavedSaveGames folder, while other platforms can vary. That is useful context for recognizing a save file, not proof of a universal E-Day location.

Step-by-step: create a pre-mod backup
- Identify the storefront. Write down whether the installation is Steam, Xbox App, or Microsoft Store. This determines which location you should verify.
- Finish the current session. Save normally, return to the desktop, and exit E-Day completely. Do not copy while the game may still be writing a save.
- Open the verified save directory. For Steam, use the manifest path above. For Xbox App or Microsoft Store, use the location confirmed for that installation rather than guessing from another game.
- Check the contents. Confirm that the folder contains the files and subfolders associated with your current campaign. On Steam, the expected file pattern is
*.sav. - Create a dated destination folder. A clear example is
E-Day-pre-mod-2026-10-19. Include the storefront in the name if you maintain more than one installation, such asE-Day-Steam-pre-mod-2026-10-19. - Copy the whole save directory. Copy the directory itself, including all
.savfiles and subfolders, into the dated destination. Do not drag it away from the active location and do not choose an overwrite operation on the original. - Use a separate physical location when possible. A USB flash drive or external SSD reduces the chance that a mistake in the game directory destroys both copies. This is a practical file-management choice, not a storage device endorsement.
- Verify the copy. Open the dated folder, confirm that its files are present, and compare its folder structure with the source. Keep the original active folder untouched.
- Only now install or update a mod. Preserve the dated copy until the modded game has loaded the campaign successfully and you are satisfied that you can return to the unmodded state.
Save slots are not file backups
Official Gears of War support says campaign play allows up to five different campaign playthroughs or states. Those slots are useful for keeping separate in-game progress, but they remain inside the game’s save system. They do not create a second copy outside the active save directory and cannot replace a dated file backup before modding.

How mod tools affect the backup plan
Mod installation can involve more than campaign saves. The E-Day Vortex extension documents installation of .sav files for the Steam version and places Unreal Engine 4SS LogicMod packages under Paks/LogicMods. That means a workflow may touch both save files and content files.
When a mod supplies a save file
Treat a supplied .sav as a replacement or additional save operation, depending on the mod’s instructions. Keep your dated pre-mod folder before copying the supplied file into the active location. If the instructions require replacing an existing file, retain the original in the backup and note which file was replaced.

When a mod installs a LogicMod package
A package placed under Paks/LogicMods is content, not a campaign-save backup. Before changing that folder, record which files you add or replace and keep the original files or a separate pre-mod copy where the mod documentation permits. The save backup still belongs in its own dated folder.

The practical baseline is the first row: a complete, dated save-folder copy kept separately from the active directory. Add content and configuration files when the mod’s instructions indicate that they will be changed.

Restore a pre-mod save if progress is no longer recognized
If E-Day stops showing your campaign after a mod change, do not immediately delete the altered files. Preserve them first so you can identify what changed.
- Exit E-Day completely. Do not attempt a restore while the game is open.
- Preserve the current state. Rename or copy the changed save directory to a clearly labeled troubleshooting folder, such as
E-Day-after-mod-troubleshooting-2026-10-19. Keep it outside the active location. - Open the dated pre-mod backup. Confirm that it contains the complete save directory and the campaign files you intend to restore.
- Restore to the active path. Copy the backed-up directory back to the storefront-specific location that E-Day uses. Avoid deleting the only backup while doing this.
- Launch and test the unmodded or repaired state. Check whether the campaign and expected save slots load correctly.
- Retain both copies until confirmed. Keep the pre-mod backup and the preserved post-mod folder until the game has loaded the restored progress successfully.
