What you need to know before touching a mod
Gears of War: E-Day launched on October 6, 2026 for Xbox Series X|S and PC, including Steam and Game Pass. Xbox Play Anywhere supports buying once and playing on an Xbox console and PC, with shared progression. That convenience also means a cloud service can move a damaged or half-written save between devices. Cloud synchronization is useful for continuity, but it is not a replacement for an independent backup.

The safe sequence is always the same: finish a normal session, exit fully, wait for synchronization, copy the confirmed save data, check that the copy exists, and only then change game files. Do not copy while E-Day is running, and do not move or delete the originals while making the backup.

The package name includes a random-looking suffix, so the folder on your computer may not visually match another player’s example. In File Explorer, paste the path into the address bar. For the Xbox-app version, open the package whose name begins with Microsoft.GearsEDay_ and then enter SystemAppDatawgs. Container files can have names that reveal nothing about the campaign state; their opacity is normal.

Why a manual copy matters when cloud sync is enabled
Steam Cloud and Xbox cloud can automatically upload a newly changed file. If a crash, forced shutdown, mod error or interrupted write leaves a bad state, synchronization may propagate that state and make it appear on another PC or console. A conflict dialog can also offer an upload or download choice before you have inspected which copy contains the intended chapter and progress.
A dated local copy gives you a known point in time that is not controlled by the next synchronization event. Make the backup after the game has closed and the storefront reports that syncing is complete. If a conflict appears, preserve both states where the platform allows it, identify the copy with the right campaign progress, and avoid blindly selecting an option merely because it is labeled “newer” or “upload.”
Step-by-step backup workflow
1. Finish a clean session
- Reach a normal checkpoint or otherwise finish the activity you want preserved.
- Use the game’s menu to quit, then wait until the desktop or launcher shows that E-Day has closed. Do not terminate the process while it is saving.
- Wait for the Steam Cloud or Xbox cloud status to finish. If the launcher is still synchronizing, leave the computer connected and give it time rather than copying an in-progress file.
2. Confirm which storefront owns the installation
Use the Steam path for a Steam installation. Use the PackagesMicrosoft.GearsEDay_<random>SystemAppDatawgs path for an Xbox-app, Microsoft Store or PC Game Pass installation. Do not mix the two models: a readable Steam file tree and an opaque Xbox container are not interchangeable backup formats.

3. Create a dated destination
Make a folder outside the game installation, such as E-Day-save-backup-2026-10-19-before-mod. The date and reason make it possible to choose the right restore point later. Keep the source folder in its original location and copy into the new folder; a backup is not a move.

4. Copy the complete data set
For Steam, copy everything in SaveGames. For Game Pass, copy the entire wgs directory, preserving its internal structure. Wait for the copy to finish, then open the destination and confirm that files and subfolders are present. Do not edit the Xbox container to make names more understandable.
5. Put a second copy on independent storage
A same-drive backup protects against a bad mod but not a failing drive or an accidental deletion of the whole profile. When practical, copy the dated folder to a USB flash drive or external SSD as well. Keep earlier dated backups instead of replacing the only previous copy; multiple points let you step back if a problem is discovered days after installation.
Steam: a documented copy command and restore method
With E-Day closed and synchronization settled, open Command Prompt and run:

To restore, close E-Day and its launcher first. Preserve the current folder by renaming or copying it to a separate emergency location, then copy the contents of your chosen dated backup back into %LOCALAPPDATA%GearsEDaySavedSaveGames. Reverse the source and destination only for this restore operation. Start the game after the replacement is complete and handle any cloud-conflict prompt deliberately; do not let a cloud download silently replace the local files you just restored.
Xbox app and Game Pass: treat wgs as an opaque package
The Xbox-app and PC Game Pass edition does not present saves as a simple list of named campaign files. Its data is stored under the package path ending in SystemAppDatawgs. Copy that whole folder to your dated backup location, retaining every file and subfolder exactly as copied.
Do not hand-edit, rename, decode or selectively delete files inside wgs. Even a file that appears old or unrelated may be part of the container’s bookkeeping. If you need to recover, first close the game, preserve the current wgs folder as another dated copy, and then replace the folder with the complete backup. Keep the originals until the restored game has opened and shown the expected progress.

Choose a backup strategy that matches your risk

The practical minimum is one dated manual copy. The safer arrangement is that copy plus a second copy on removable storage, with at least one earlier version retained.
Install a mod only after the backup is verified
Mod instructions are release-specific. A current Nexus Mods PAK example for E-Day explicitly begins with “STEP 1 — CLOSE THE GAME.” Follow the individual mod’s description if its folder, file name or compatibility requirements differ.
Xbox app, Microsoft Store and PC Game Pass path
- Open
C:XboxGamesGears of War- E-DayContentFairlightConceptContentPaks. - Create a folder named
~modsinsidePaksif it does not already exist. - Extract the downloaded archive somewhere temporary. Copy the supplied
.pakfile into~mods; do not place the ZIP archive there. - If the mod supplies more than one AXIS revision, keep only the revision the instructions identify as compatible. Multiple revisions can conflict.
Steam path
- In Steam, open E-Day’s properties or library menu and choose Browse local files.
- From that installation directory, open
FairlightConceptContentPaksand create~modsif needed. - Extract the archive and copy the provided
.pakinto~mods, not the ZIP itself. - Keep only one AXIS revision when the mod package includes alternatives.
Uninstalling the PAK
Close the game, then remove or move the mod’s .pak out of ~mods. Moving it to a quarantine folder is safer than deleting it if you may need to identify which file caused a problem. Do not remove your save backup when uninstalling a mod; the mod file and the save data are separate recovery items.
Restore a good save after a crash or bad mod
Steam recovery
- Exit E-Day and wait for the launcher to stop any active synchronization.
- Move the current
SaveGamesfolder to a new dated quarantine folder so the failed state remains available for comparison. - Copy the selected dated backup into
%LOCALAPPDATA%GearsEDaySavedSaveGames. - Launch the game and verify the campaign chapter, character progress and expected state before resuming play.
- If Steam asks which version to keep, choose only after comparing the displayed dates and the progress visible in the local restored copy. Preserve the other state rather than deleting it.
Xbox app/Game Pass recovery
- Close E-Day and preserve the current
wgsfolder as a separate emergency copy. - Replace the live
wgsfolder with the complete dated backup; do not merge individual opaque files. - Start E-Day and confirm that the intended campaign state appears.
- If the Xbox service presents a conflict, retain both local and cloud states where possible and select the state whose progress you have verified. Never assume the cloud copy is automatically the healthy one.
Diagnose common backup and mod problems
The folder appears empty
First confirm that E-Day has closed and that you are using the storefront’s path. A Steam installation should expose SaveGames; an Xbox-app installation should lead to wgs beneath the package directory. If the path is wrong, search File Explorer for the distinctive folder names rather than copying a similarly named game directory. Do not create replacement files by hand inside wgs.

Cloud sync keeps returning the bad state
Stop launching the game repeatedly. Close it, preserve the local and downloaded states in separate dated folders if the platform lets you, and determine which one contains the intended progress. Restore the verified manual copy, then resolve the platform prompt deliberately. A manual copy is the reference point; cloud synchronization should not be allowed to choose for you.
The mod does nothing
Confirm that the game was closed during installation, that the ~mods directory is directly inside Paks, and that you copied the extracted .pak rather than the ZIP. Recheck whether the mod targets the Steam or Xbox-app path and whether its release notes require a particular game build or a single AXIS revision.
The game crashes after installing a PAK
Close E-Day and move the newest mod PAK out of ~mods. Test the unmodded game with the backed-up saves still preserved. If it launches, add compatible PAKs one at a time, following each mod’s release-specific instructions. Do not overwrite a known-good save while troubleshooting; use a dated copy before each major change.
The restored game shows an unexpected chapter
Stop and preserve the current state before trying another restore. Campaign supports up to five campaign playthroughs or states, so an apparently missing chapter may be a different state rather than total loss. Compare the dated backups and the cloud copy by the progress visible in-game, then restore the complete folder that matches the state you intend to keep.
Keep backups usable over the life of the game
- Name each backup with the date and event, such as
E-Day-save-backup-2026-10-19-before-modorE-Day-save-backup-2026-10-20-after-uninstall. - Keep the original live folder untouched while copying, and retain earlier dated versions.
- Store a second copy on a USB flash drive or external SSD when possible.
- Record whether the backup came from Steam or the Xbox app/Game Pass; the folder formats cannot be substituted for one another.
- Before a new mod, repeat the close, synchronize, copy and verify sequence rather than assuming an older backup covers the latest progress.
- After restoring, open the game and verify the expected campaign state before deleting any quarantine copy.
Bottom line
Back up E-Day saves while the game is closed and synchronization has finished. Steam users should copy %LOCALAPPDATA%GearsEDaySavedSaveGames; Xbox-app and Game Pass users should copy the entire opaque wgs folder under the E-Day package. Keep dated copies outside the installation, preferably on independent storage, and treat cloud sync as convenience rather than version control. Once the copy is verified, install only the release-specific PAK and remove that PAK—not the save backup—if the mod causes trouble.
