Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallBack up a Playdate before you reset it, repair its filesystem, or follow any troubleshooting step that could change files. The official method is to connect the handheld to a computer, choose Settings > System > Reboot to Data Disk, and copy the complete Data folder to another location. That folder contains game progress, saves, and other writable game data. After the copy is checked, safely eject the Playdate and press A to leave Data Disk mode.
What the backup protects
Playdate stores each game’s writable information separately from the installed application. The official SDK describes a per-game Data directory for saved state and other data, while the application bundle itself is read-only. In practical terms, the Data folder is the part you need to preserve when your concern is progress or saves.

| Folder or content | Purpose | What to do before troubleshooting |
|---|---|---|
Data |
Writable game data, including progress, saves, and other saved state. | Copy the entire folder to a clearly named backup location. |
Games |
Installed game files. It is separate from the save-data area. | Do not treat it as a substitute for the Data backup. Do not edit unrelated files. |
| Read-only app bundle | The installed game’s program files. | Leave it unchanged while the Playdate is mounted. |
Copying Data is not the same as making a full device image. The documented save-preservation workflow targets that folder because it contains the writable information games use for progress. If you also need to reinstall a game, handle that as a separate task; do not modify files merely because they are visible on the mounted volume.

- A Playdate with enough battery to remain connected while the copy completes.
- A computer with free storage for the backup.
- A USB cable that carries data. A USB-C data cable is the practical choice for connecting a Playdate; a charge-only cable will not provide the required disk connection.
- An optional external USB drive if you want a second copy after saving the first copy on the computer.
Use a location that is easy to identify later, such as a folder named with the device, date, and reason for the backup. For example, Playdate-Data-before-reset-2026-10-19 tells you what the folder is and when it was made. The name is for your organization; it does not change anything on the Playdate.

Before connecting the Playdate
Finish ordinary in-game saving before entering Data Disk mode. Close anything on the computer that might automatically rename, “clean up,” synchronize, or edit removable-drive files. The mounted Playdate exposes real device files, so treat the volume as you would any other storage device containing irreplaceable saves.
- Confirm that the computer has room for the complete
Datafolder. - Prepare the destination folder before you start copying.
- Use a known-good data cable and connect directly to the computer when possible.
- Decide where a second copy will live if the troubleshooting step could put the original device at risk.
- Do not begin a reset, repair, or filesystem change until the copy has been checked.
Back up the Playdate step by step
-
Connect the handheld
Connect the Playdate to the computer with the USB data cable. Leave the cable connected until the copy and safe-eject steps are complete.
-
Enter Data Disk mode
On the Playdate, open Settings > System > Reboot to Data Disk. This is the required menu path; simply plugging in the cable does not replace this step.

Locate the Data folder
Find the top-level
Datafolder. This is the critical save-backup target. Do not select only one game’s subfolder if your goal is to protect all progress; copy the entireDatafolder. -
Copy the complete folder
Copy
Datato the prepared backup location. Keep the folder structure intact. Let the file operation finish rather than cancelling after a few visible files have appeared. -
Verify the copy
Open the copied folder on the computer and confirm that it contains the expected game-data subfolders or files rather than an empty directory or a shortcut. If the computer reports an error, an incomplete transfer, or a file that could not be read, do not troubleshoot the Playdate yet; resolve the copy problem or make another copy first.

Leave Data Disk mode
After the volume is ejected, press A on the Playdate to return from Data Disk mode to the settings menu. Only then disconnect the USB cable.
The order matters. Removing the cable while the computer is still writing can leave the backup incomplete and can damage the software on the Playdate. The same caution applies to changing files while the volume is mounted: Panic warns that direct file access can break the device’s software.
How to check that the backup is usable
A backup is useful only if it can be found and copied later. Check it immediately while the original Playdate is still available.
- Open the destination folder and make sure the folder is named clearly enough to distinguish it from later backups.
- Confirm that the copied
Datafolder is present at the expected level, not accidentally nested inside another folder created by a drag-and-drop operation. - Browse far enough to see game-specific data; an empty top-level folder is not evidence of a successful save backup.
- If you keep a second copy on an external USB drive, disconnect that drive only after the computer finishes writing it.
- Keep the original backup unchanged. Make a duplicate before experimenting with any restoration or manual file transfer.
The official procedure calls for copying and verifying before troubleshooting. It does not require editing, renaming, or reorganizing the files inside the backup. Preservation is safer than inspection when the files are the only copy of a game’s progress.

Restore saves to another Playdate
Panic documents moving progress to a new Playdate by transferring the backed-up Data contents to the destination device. The destination must be booted into Data Disk mode so its storage appears on the computer.
- Keep the original backup untouched and connect the destination Playdate to the computer with a data-capable USB cable.
- On the destination, open Settings > System > Reboot to Data Disk.
- Open the destination Playdate volume when it mounts.
- Identify the corresponding location for the destination’s
Datacontent. - Copy the backed-up
Datacontents into that corresponding location. Copy the contents into the existing destination location rather than creating an unintendedData/Datanesting level. - Allow the transfer to finish, then eject or unmount the destination volume through the computer.
- Press A on the destination Playdate to return to the settings menu, and disconnect only after the safe-eject step.
Moving data does not give the destination a different game’s program files. The destination needs the relevant game installed or otherwise present for that game’s data to be meaningful. Keep the backup until you have opened the game and confirmed that the expected progress is available.
Sideloaded games need an extra check
Sideloaded games can create a complication because their writable folder may not exist until the game has run. If you copy a new sideloaded build to a Playdate and cannot find its expected data folder, launch that new copy at least once, exit it normally, and then check the mounted Data area again.

Duplicate sideloaded versions can also use different folder names. Panic documents that an old build and a new build may not share the same folder. In that situation:

- Make a fresh backup of the complete
Datafolder before changing anything. - Boot the Playdate into Data Disk mode and identify the old and new game-data folders by their names.
- Compare the folders without deleting either one.
- Copy the required save contents manually from the old folder into the corresponding new folder, preserving the destination’s structure.
- Eject the Playdate safely and test the new build.
Do not assume that two folders with similar names are interchangeable. Keep both the untouched backup and the pre-transfer folders until the new version has loaded the progress you intended to move.

| Symptom | Likely issue to check | Safe response |
|---|---|---|
| The Playdate does not appear as a disk. | The handheld may not be in Data Disk mode, or the cable may not carry data. | Confirm Settings > System > Reboot to Data Disk, reconnect with a known data-capable cable, and wait for the volume to mount before copying. |
| The mounted volume appears, but no expected sideloaded-game folder exists. | The new sideloaded copy may not have created its writable directory yet. | Launch that copy at least once, return to Data Disk mode, and check again. |
| Two similar folders appear for one sideloaded game. | Different builds can use different folder names. | Back up both folders first, then manually copy the needed contents from the old folder to the corresponding new one. |
| The computer reports a copy error. | The transfer did not complete. | Do not reset or repair the Playdate. Check the destination, repeat the copy, and verify that the resulting folder opens and contains data. |
| The device was unplugged without ejecting. | The volume may have been disconnected while still in use. | Reconnect, allow the Playdate to mount, make a complete backup, and use the computer’s eject command before the next disconnect. |
These checks are deliberately conservative. The mounted volume is not a place to experiment with filenames or file contents while trying to diagnose a game. Preserve a known-good copy first, then make the smallest change needed for the specific problem.
Files and actions to avoid
- Do not rename the
Datafolder or unrelated device files. - Do not delete files because their names are unfamiliar.
- Do not edit save files in a text editor or other application.
- Do not move folders around on the Playdate while a troubleshooting guide is still asking you to create a backup.
- Do not disconnect the cable before the computer has ejected the mounted volume.
- Do not overwrite your only backup with a modified copy.
Panic’s warning is direct: accessing Playdate files can break the software. The safest workflow is read-and-copy first, with any manual transfer performed only after an untouched backup exists.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Choosing a backup location
Your computer is the required first destination because the official workflow uses it as the intermediary. An external USB drive is optional but useful for retaining a second copy after the computer copy finishes. Store that second copy separately from the Playdate so a device reset, cable failure, or accidental file operation cannot remove every copy at once.
A second copy should remain a copy, not a working area. If you need to move saves between devices or between sideloaded builds, duplicate the backup first and perform the experiment on the duplicate. Label each version with the date and purpose so you can tell an original backup from a transfer attempt.
When to make another backup
Make a new backup whenever the writable data changes materially or before another risky operation. A practical sequence is to keep the first pre-troubleshooting backup, then create a separate dated backup before restoring to another Playdate or changing sideloaded folders. This gives you a recovery point for each stage without replacing the evidence you may need if a later step fails.
| Situation | Backup action |
|---|---|
| Before a reset or filesystem troubleshooting | Copy the complete Data folder and verify it before starting. |
| After a successful troubleshooting change | Keep the original pre-change copy; create a new dated copy if you want to preserve the new state. |
| Before moving progress to another Playdate | Duplicate the original backup and use the duplicate for the transfer. |
| Before changing a sideloaded game’s folder | Back up all related folders, including old and new build folders. |
The short, safe procedure
Connect the Playdate with a data-capable USB cable, choose Settings > System > Reboot to Data Disk, open the mounted volume, and copy the entire Data folder to the computer. Check that the copy contains the expected data. Eject or unmount the Playdate, press A to leave Data Disk mode, and only then disconnect it. For a second Playdate, repeat Data Disk mode on the destination and copy the backed-up Data contents into the corresponding location. Treat every file on the mounted device as consequential, and leave unrelated files untouched.
