The safest PlayStation backup uses three separate layers: PlayStation Plus cloud storage for saved games, a FAT32- or exFAT-formatted USB drive for console backups and capture archives, and your purchasing account’s Game Library for redownloading digital games. They are not interchangeable. Cloud storage helps when a console is lost, USB gives you a local copy, and Game Library restores your digital entitlements after you sign in.
PS4 saved data can be included in a USB backup and can be copied to USB through the console’s saved-data tools. PS5 saved data cannot be copied individually from the console to USB; use PlayStation Plus cloud storage, console-to-console transfer, or a full PS5 backup-and-restore operation instead.

The three backup layers and what each one protects
A console failure can affect different kinds of data, so one method cannot cover everything. Set up all three layers before you need them.

| Layer | Protects | How recovery works |
|---|---|---|
| PlayStation Plus cloud storage | PS4 and PS5 saved games | Sign in on another console and download or synchronize the saves |
| USB backup or capture archive | Console settings, selected games and apps, saved data in a PS4 backup, PS5 full-backup data, screenshots and video clips | Restore the console backup or copy captures back from the archive |
| Purchasing account and Game Library | Digital game licenses and download access | Sign in to the account that bought the game and download it again |
A USB drive used for a backup is different from a USB extended-storage drive used to hold installed games. Formatting and supported functions differ, so do not assume a game-storage drive is ready for a backup.

Prepare before backing up
- Use a USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT. The console may erase the drive when you format it, so copy any existing files elsewhere first.
- Leave more free space than the data you intend to back up. On PS4, Sony requires at least twice the space occupied by the backup file.
- Use a separate location for irreplaceable screenshots and clips. A second drive or a computer protects the archive if the console backup becomes corrupt.
- Connect the console to reliable power and do not remove the drive while a backup or restore is running.
- Synchronize trophies before starting a console backup. Trophies are not included in the backup file.
- Label the drive with the console, account and date, then disconnect it when it is not in use to reduce accidental overwrites and corruption.
Back up a PS4 to USB
What the PS4 backup contains
The PS4 backup tool can include games and applications, saved data, screenshots, video clips and system settings. You choose the categories in the backup screen, so check the selections rather than assuming every item is included. The backup is a console archive intended for restoration; it is not the same as copying one save file to a computer.
Step-by-step procedure
- Connect a FAT32 or exFAT USB drive to the PS4 and confirm that it has sufficient free space. Sony requires at least double the space of the resulting backup file.
- Open Settings > System > Back Up and Restore > Back Up.
- Select the categories to include. Include saved data and captures if you want them in the console archive; including games and applications makes the archive larger but reduces later downloads.
- Enter a description if the console offers one, then select Back Up.
- Wait for the completion message before disconnecting the drive. Do not put the console into rest mode or remove the cable during the process.
Restoring a PS4 backup
On the replacement or repaired PS4, connect the backup drive and open Settings > System > Back Up and Restore > Restore. Select the archive and confirm the warning that restoration replaces data on the target console. Restore only after verifying that the archive is the correct console and date.
Copying individual PS4 saves
For a smaller, targeted copy, use Settings > Application Saved Data Management and the USB-copy option. This is useful when you want one game’s saves rather than a complete system image. Keep the cloud copy as well; a single USB export is vulnerable to loss or corruption.

Back up a PS5 and understand its save-data limit
Full PS5 backup
PS5 provides a full console backup that can contain games and apps, saved data, screenshots and video clips, and settings. Use a FAT32- or exFAT-formatted USB drive with enough free capacity for the categories selected.
- Connect the prepared USB drive to the PS5.
- Open Settings > System > System Software > Back Up and Restore > Back Up Your PS5.
- Review the categories and estimated size, then start the backup.
- Leave the console and drive connected until the completion confirmation appears.
To restore, open Settings > System > System Software > Back Up and Restore on the target PS5 and choose the restore command. A restore replaces data on that console, so use the newest verified archive and preserve any newer files before confirming.
Why you cannot copy PS5 saves individually to USB
Sony does not allow saved data created on a PS5 to be copied from the console to a USB drive as individual save files. The full Back Up Your PS5 archive is a separate console-level operation. If your goal is to move only PS5 saves, use PlayStation Plus cloud storage or the console-to-console transfer feature. Do not format a USB extended-storage game drive expecting it to provide individual PS5 save exports.

Moving PS5 saves to another PS5
For two working consoles, the console-to-console transfer option moves compatible user data over the network. Keep both systems powered, signed in and on the same local network, and follow the on-screen transfer instructions. For a lost or unusable source console, cloud synchronization or a previously created full backup is the practical recovery path.
Export screenshots and video clips
Captures are easy to overlook because they are not required to launch a game. Include screenshots and clips in the PS4 or PS5 console backup where supported, then export irreplaceable files to a separate USB archive so they remain usable even if the console backup cannot be restored.
PS4 capture archive
- Open the PS4 Capture Gallery and select the screenshots or clips you want to preserve.
- Use the options menu to copy selected items to a connected USB storage device. The wording can vary with system software.
- Organize the files into dated folders on a computer or second drive, and open several files to verify that the copy works.
PS5 capture archive
- Open Media Gallery on the PS5 and highlight a screenshot or video clip.
- Use the item’s options menu and choose the USB-copy command when it is available. Sony’s labels can change with system software updates, so follow the current wording shown on your console.
- After copying, safely remove the drive and verify the files on another device. Keep the original console backup as a second copy.
Short clips can consume substantial space. If the drive is nearly full, archive the most important captures first and move older material to a computer or additional drive rather than deleting originals before verification.

Set up PlayStation Plus cloud saves
What cloud synchronization does
Cloud storage keeps saved games off the console. When a console is online and automatic updates and rest-mode connectivity are enabled, PS5 saves can synchronize automatically. If the console is lost, you can sign in on another PlayStation and retrieve the cloud copy.
Sony’s current PlayStation Plus guidance lists 100 GB for PS5 saved data and another 100 GB for PS4 saved data. PS4 saved data has a limit of 1,000 files. Those limits apply to the cloud service, not to the capacity of your USB drive.

- Open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Saved Data (PS5).
- Open the synchronization settings and enable automatic synchronization. Keep the console online and allow rest-mode network connectivity if you expect uploads while resting.
- After an important play session, check the synchronization status and the time of the latest upload. Do not shut down immediately if an upload is still pending.
PS4 saves on a PS5
PS4-game saves used on a PS5 upload automatically under the cloud-save system, but the console may require a manual download before the save appears in console storage. In the saved-data settings, choose the PS4 saved-data cloud option, select the title and download the files to console storage. Check the game’s regional and edition compatibility if a save does not appear.

When cloud saves are not enough
- A cloud copy follows the account, so it does not preserve screenshots, video clips, system settings or installed games.
- Automatic synchronization can upload an unwanted newer state. Before experimenting with a game, make a USB or second-cloud copy when the title supports it.
- If a console has been offline for a long time, the latest local save may not have reached the cloud. Connect it, launch synchronization and verify the timestamp before treating the cloud copy as current.
Recover on a replacement PlayStation
Restore saved games
- Sign in with the PlayStation account that used the original saves.
- For PS5 saves, allow cloud synchronization to complete or manually download the required saves from cloud storage. If you have a full PS5 USB archive, use the Back Up and Restore menu instead.
- For PS4 saves, download the cloud files to console storage or restore the PS4 USB backup. A PS4 save copied to USB must be associated with the same user account to be recognized.
- Launch the game and confirm that the expected progress, settings and downloadable-content access are present before deleting any old copy.
Redownload digital games
- Sign in with the account that purchased the games. A different account may not see those entitlements in its library.
- Open Game Library, select the game and choose the download option.
- Install updates and any required add-ons, then start the game after the download completes.
Keep the purchasing account’s password, two-factor-authentication method and recovery details available before the old console is discarded. Game Library access is account-based; it is separate from the saved-data copy.
Disc games and digital licenses are different
A digital license is redownloaded through the purchasing account. A disc-based game still requires its physical disc to start, even if the game data was included in a USB backup or remains on an extended-storage drive. Backing up installation data does not transfer ownership between accounts.
Backup drives versus USB extended storage
| Use | Purpose | Format and limits | Important restriction |
|---|---|---|---|
| PS4 or PS5 console backup | Preserves selected console data for restoration | FAT32 or exFAT; capacity depends on selected content | Keep the drive available for backup and do not treat it as a game library |
| USB extended storage for games | Stores installed games to free internal space | Sony lists 250 GB minimum and 8 TB maximum for supported drives | It is not a substitute for a PS5 save backup; some PS5 games must be copied to internal storage before play |
| Capture archive | Stores screenshots and clips for viewing or editing elsewhere | Use a compatible FAT32 or exFAT drive and leave room for large video files | Maintain a second copy of irreplaceable files |
Buy a drive based on the job. A large extended-storage drive may be unsuitable for the backup workflow if it uses a different format, while a small backup drive may fill before a full console image finishes. Check free space on the console’s backup screen before starting.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTroubleshoot common failures
The console does not recognize the drive
- Confirm that the drive is FAT32 or exFAT. Reformatting erases existing files, so copy them elsewhere first.
- Try a different USB port and connect the drive directly rather than through a hub.
- Check the cable and test the drive on another device. A failing cable or drive can look like a format problem.
The backup stops for lack of space
Remove unnecessary captures or use a larger drive with more free capacity. PS4 backups require at least twice the eventual backup-file size, and a full PS5 backup grows with every selected category. Do not estimate from the console’s total capacity alone.
A save is missing after restoration
- Confirm that you signed in to the same user and purchasing account used on the original console.
- Check whether the save is a PS4 or PS5 save and use the corresponding cloud-storage section.
- For PS4 saves on PS5, manually download the cloud copy to console storage.
- Check the game edition and region. A save may not be recognized by a different edition even when the title name is identical.
A digital game shows a padlock or is absent
Verify that the purchasing account is signed in and that the console is online, then look in that account’s Game Library. Do not assume that restoring a USB backup transfers a digital license; the entitlement is tied to the account.
A capture copy will not open
Copy the file again, test another USB port and verify it on a computer or second console. Keep the original until the replacement file has been opened successfully. If only one clip fails, the individual file may have been damaged before export.
Quick Recap
A maintenance schedule that survives console failure
- Enable cloud auto-sync and verify its status after major play sessions.
- At a regular interval, run a PS4 or PS5 console backup after installing major games, changing settings or creating important saves.
- Export irreplaceable captures to a second local location instead of relying only on the console archive.
- Synchronize trophies before each full console backup.
- Keep the purchasing account credentials and two-factor recovery details in a secure place.
- Label each backup drive with the console, account and date, and disconnect it when finished.
- Periodically inspect the drive and open a sample save or capture so a silent failure is found before an emergency.
Which method should you use?
- Replacing a lost PS5: sign in, synchronize or download PS5 cloud saves, then redownload digital games from Game Library. A previous full PS5 backup provides an additional restoration option.
- Moving PS4 progress: use cloud storage, a PS4 USB save copy or a full PS4 backup. Choose the full backup when you also need settings, applications or captures.
- Preserving screenshots and clips: export them to a separate USB archive and keep a second copy. Cloud saves do not protect captures.
- Freeing internal storage: use USB extended storage for installed games, but keep a separate FAT32 or exFAT backup drive for console data.
- Preparing for account loss: secure the purchasing account and two-factor recovery information; no USB archive can replace the digital entitlement attached to that account.
