Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For a PS2 disc you legally own, the dependable workflow is: read the original disc with a reliable CD/DVD drive and preservation-oriented software, save DVDs as ISO images and CDs as matching BIN/CUE files, perform a second independent read, compare cryptographic hashes, and only then copy the unchanged verified image to storage used by your PS5 homebrew emulator. Keep the original disc and a backup of the verified image. A successful dump does not guarantee that a particular jailbroken PS5, firmware version, or emulator will run the game.
What this process does—and what it does not do
Dumping creates a file-level image of an original PlayStation 2 disc. The optical drive reads the sectors on the disc; the software records them in an image format that an emulator may be able to open. It does not download a game, remove ownership requirements, or make an unsupported PS5 firmware compatible with an emulator.

Use this procedure only with discs you personally own. ARMSX2 documentation describes the process as reading the original disc and says to dump only personally owned discs. Sony Interactive Entertainment’s PS5 System Software Licence Agreement prohibits unauthorized, illegal, counterfeit, or modified hardware or software and prohibits tools intended to bypass, disable, or circumvent PS5 encryption, security, or authentication. Sony also warns that system updates can prevent access to unauthorized or pirated content.

U.S. 37 CFR 201.40 contains limited video-game circumvention and preservation exemptions under specific conditions, including provisions for eligible libraries, archives, museums, and certain lawfully acquired games. Those exemptions are not a blanket authorization for every personal copy or every console modification. Laws differ by country, and the console’s licence terms still matter. Check the rules that apply where you live before proceeding.

The instructions below describe disc preservation, not a method for obtaining games you do not own. Keep the physical disc as your source of record even after you have a verified image.
Equipment and storage you need
- Original PS2 media: a PS2 CD-ROM or DVD-ROM that you own. Some games use CDs, some use single-layer DVD-5 media, and some use dual-layer DVD-9 media.
- Optical drive: a dependable internal or external USB drive that reads both CD and DVD media. PCSX2 documentation identifies PS2 discs as unencrypted DVDs and CDs that can be dumped with a standard compatible optical drive. An external USB drive is suitable when the computer has no built-in drive.
- Dumping software: a preservation-oriented program such as Media Preservation Frontend (MPF) used with Redumper, following the current project documentation. These tools provide drive selection, media identification, retry handling, and logs that ordinary file-copy software does not.
- Working space: allow room for two complete images before you start verification. ARMSX2 lists approximate maximum image sizes of 1 GB for a CD, 4.7 GB for a DVD-5, and 8.5 GB for a DVD-9. Two DVD-9 reads can therefore require roughly 17 GB before you account for logs, backups, or other files.
- Cleaning material: a clean microfiber cloth and a dust-free, stable surface. Do not use abrasive paper, household cleaners, or circular wiping motions.
Use a drive connected directly to the computer rather than an unreliable hub. Disable sleep settings that could interrupt a long read, and close applications that might disconnect removable storage. The drive should be recognized by the operating system before you launch the dumping program.
Choose the correct image format
The format is determined by the disc’s physical media and track layout. It is not a matter of choosing whichever extension is most convenient.
| PS2 media | Normal image output | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| CD-ROM game | A BIN file with its matching CUE file | CD sector layout and, where present, audio-track metadata are represented by the BIN/CUE pair. A single ISO can lose that structure. |
| DVD-5 game | One ISO file, approximately 4.7 GB | Most single-layer PS2 DVDs are represented as one DVD image. |
| DVD-9 game | One ISO file, approximately 8.5 GB | Dual-layer capacity requires enough free space for the larger image and for a second verification read. |
Keep a CD dump as BIN plus CUE. Do not rename a BIN file to ISO: changing the extension does not convert the underlying sector format and can make the image unreadable or alter how an emulator interprets its tracks. Keep the pair together, with matching base names, when you move or back up the files.
Step-by-step: make and verify a PS2 disc dump
1. Inspect and clean the disc
Hold the data side under a bright light and look for cracks, deep radial scratches, clouding, or a label that is lifting. Never put a cracked disc in a high-speed drive; centrifugal force can break it and damage the drive. Remove loose dust with a clean microfiber cloth, wiping in straight lines from the center hole toward the outer edge. Straight strokes reduce the chance that a scratch follows many adjacent data tracks.

If the disc is visibly damaged, document its condition before reading it. A difficult read may require several attempts, and an image with unrecovered sectors cannot be treated as a verified backup merely because the program produced a file.
2. Connect and identify the optical drive
Connect the drive and insert the disc before opening MPF. Let the operating system finish detecting the media. In MPF, scan for discs and select the profile for Sony PlayStation 2. Confirm whether the program identifies the medium as CD-ROM or DVD-ROM, then select a destination on a drive with enough free space for the first image and the second read.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUse a descriptive temporary name that distinguishes the first read, such as a title plus region and Dump1. Avoid spaces or unusual punctuation if the target emulator has strict file-name handling, but do not change the extension selected by the dumping software.
3. Start the first read and wait for a safe eject
Start the dump in MPF with Redumper and allow it to complete without opening the drive, unplugging the USB cable, or letting the computer sleep. A slower read can take longer, but reducing speed may improve the chance of recovering a clean, repeatable image from marginal media. Wait for the program to report that it is safe to eject before removing the disc.
Save the log beside the image. The log records the drive, media detection, retries, and any read or C2 errors. A completed progress bar alone is not proof that every sector was recovered correctly.

4. Inspect the result and preserve the expected files
For a DVD, confirm that the output is one ISO with a size consistent with the disc type. For a CD, confirm that both the BIN and CUE files exist and that the CUE references the BIN using the correct file name. Open the CUE in a text editor only for inspection; do not rewrite track definitions unless you understand the format and have a documented reason.
Keep the first image unchanged. Do not mount it read-write, extract and rebuild it, convert it to another format, or rename a CD BIN as an ISO before verification. Any transformation can make a later hash comparison meaningless.
5. Read the same disc a second time
Insert the original disc again and perform a complete second dump into a different file, such as Dump2. The second read must start from the physical disc, not from a copy of Dump1. Use the same media profile, but a different destination so that an accidental overwrite cannot hide a problem.
Review both logs for unrecovered read errors, C2 errors, or sectors that the software could not verify. A log that reports retries but ultimately recovers all sectors is different from a log that leaves unrecovered errors. Record which drive and speed were used for each pass.
6. Compare cryptographic hashes
Calculate SHA-1 or another cryptographic hash for Dump1 and Dump2. Matching hashes are strong evidence that the two reads produced identical files. For a CD, hash the BIN data file and keep the CUE with it; the CUE is a small text descriptor and should remain paired with the BIN. For a DVD, hash the ISO.

If the hashes differ, do not choose one by intuition and call it verified. First compare file sizes and logs, then clean the disc and repeat both complete reads. You can also lower the drive’s read speed or try another compatible optical drive. Different regional releases, revisions, or pressings can legitimately have different database hashes, so compare your two reads of the same physical disc rather than expecting every copy of a title to share one value.
7. Archive the verified image
When the two reads match and the logs contain no unresolved errors, designate that image as the verified master. Set it to read-only if your storage system supports that, and make at least one additional backup on separate storage. Keep the original disc in a protective case away from heat, moisture, and direct sunlight.
Transfer a copy—not the only master—to the storage location used by your PS5 homebrew emulator. Preserve the ISO or BIN/CUE structure exactly. If you move a CD image, copy both files together and verify that the CUE still points to the BIN’s current name.

The program reports unrecovered sectors
Stop treating the image as verified. Eject the disc only when the software says it is safe, clean it from center to edge, and repeat the read at a lower speed. If the same area continues to fail, try a different compatible drive; optical pickups vary in how they handle scratches and marginal reflectivity. Keep every log so you know whether the problem moved with the drive or stayed with the disc.

Confirm that you compared the same file type and that neither read was interrupted. Check that the second destination did not contain an old file, then repeat both reads after cleaning the disc. A mismatch means the image is not yet stable evidence of the disc’s contents. Do not repair one image by copying sectors from the other unless you are performing specialist preservation work and can document exactly what changed.

The image is unexpectedly small
Check whether the disc is a CD rather than a DVD, and verify that the dumping profile matches the detected medium. A DVD-5 image is about 4.7 GB and a DVD-9 image about 8.5 GB; a result far below the expected capacity can indicate an incomplete read, an incorrect profile, or a destination that ran out of space.
The CUE cannot find its BIN
Keep the BIN and CUE in the same directory and restore the BIN’s original base name if it was changed. The CUE contains a file reference; changing only the extension or moving one member of the pair breaks that reference. If you must rename the pair, edit the CUE’s referenced file name to match and then test the pair on the computer before transferring it.
The emulator does not list the game
Confirm that the emulator supports the image type and that the file is in a directory it scans. For a CD, select the CUE rather than hiding the BIN from the emulator’s file browser. For a DVD, select the ISO. If the image is verified but still not detected, consult the current emulator documentation for supported extensions, required naming conventions, and firmware-specific limitations; do not redump a good disc solely because a particular front end has a scanning problem.
Recommended Free Tools
Preparing the image for a jailbroken PS5
PS5 homebrew and PS2-emulation projects can change their file support, installation method, and firmware requirements. A verified disc image is necessary for a reliable test, but it is not a guarantee that PS5SX2 or another emulator will boot every title. Check the project’s current documentation for the exact PS5 firmware, jailbreak environment, emulator build, BIOS requirements, supported CD and DVD formats, and storage paths.
Transfer over a method that preserves file contents and names. Large DVD images can expose limits in file systems, USB devices, or network-transfer tools, so confirm the destination has more free space than the image size and that the copy completed. Compare a hash of the transferred file with the archived verified master before deleting any temporary copy.
Do not modify the verified master to satisfy an emulator’s preferred naming scheme. Create a working copy instead. If an emulator requires a specific folder structure, place the working copy there while retaining the read-only master elsewhere.
Workflow choices and their trade-offs
| Approach | Media support | Preservation fidelity | Verification | Operating-system and transfer considerations |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Preservation-oriented dump with MPF and Redumper | CD, DVD-5, and DVD-9 when the drive supports the media | Designed to retain sector and track information and to keep CD audio structure in BIN/CUE | Detailed logs, retries, and a second-read hash comparison | Requires installing the tool and reviewing its current documentation; produces files that can be copied to emulator storage |
| Basic disc-imaging utility | Depends on the drive and program; support for PS2-specific layouts varies | May produce a usable ISO, but CD track handling and error reporting may be limited | Often relies on a completion message; independent verification may be weaker | Usually simpler to launch, but you must confirm the output format and preserve logs yourself |
| Direct file copying from an operating-system disc window | Not a complete image workflow | Does not reliably capture the full disc structure required by an emulator | No sector-level verification of an image | Easy to try but unsuitable for creating a preservation-quality PS2 image |
The preservation-oriented route takes more time because it reads the disc twice and records evidence about the reads. That extra time is the trade-off for knowing whether the file is a repeatable representation of your disc.
Quick Recap
Final checklist before you use the image
- You own the original PS2 disc and have checked the law and licence terms that apply to your location and console.
- The optical drive reads the disc type, and the disc was inspected and cleaned safely.
- MPF with Redumper, or another preservation-capable tool, completed a full read and produced a log.
- A second full read was saved separately from the first.
- Neither log contains unresolved unrecovered or C2 errors.
- The two corresponding image files have matching cryptographic hashes.
- DVD media is stored as ISO; CD media is stored as a matching BIN and CUE pair.
- The verified master is unchanged, backed up separately, and accompanied by its logs and hash record.
- The copy sent to PS5 storage was checked against the master after transfer.
- You confirmed current emulator and PS5 firmware compatibility instead of assuming that every verified image will run.
