Back up the save before access ends, but separate two questions: your save file is your progress, while a game license determines whether the console can launch the game. PS4 saves can be copied individually to USB; PS5-native saves cannot. PlayStation Plus cloud storage works for both generations, and a full-console backup is available when you need a broader recovery option. After making a copy, verify its date and check the specific game’s entitlement separately.
Save data and game access are different
A save file records progress such as completed missions, character levels, settings and unlocks. It does not grant a license to launch the game. If a title leaves a PlayStation Plus catalog, is removed from your library, or becomes unavailable in your region, keeping the save does not by itself prove that you can continue playing it. Sony’s support guidance explains storage and transfer functions, but it does not establish one universal access result for every catalog departure, region, subscription state or title.

Before the game disappears, check its current entitlement in your account and the store or subscription page for your region. Treat that check as separate from the backup procedure. A save is still worth preserving because you may regain access later, buy the game, use a disc edition or move the progress to another console, but the backup cannot replace the license.

| Situation | Best local option | Cloud option | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| PS4 game played on a PS4 | Copy individual saves to USB | PlayStation Plus online storage | Compare timestamps before restoring or overwriting a save |
| PS5-native game played on a PS5 | PS5 full-console USB backup | PlayStation Plus online storage | Individual PS5 saves cannot be copied to USB |
| PS4 game played on a PS5 | Copy the PS4 save to USB from the PS5 | PlayStation Plus online storage | The USB procedure applies to PS4 saves, not PS5-native saves |
| Need to recover the whole console | Full-console backup | Cloud saves for supported save data | Restoring a full backup erases data already on the console |
If you only need one game’s progress, use an individual PS4 USB copy or cloud upload. A full backup is a recovery image for the console, not a convenient single-save export.

Back up an individual PS4 save to USB
Copy the save from a PS4
- Connect a USB storage device to the PS4.
- Open Settings > Application Saved Data Management > Saved Data in System Storage > Copy to USB Storage Device.
- Select the game whose progress you want to preserve.
- Select the save files, choose Copy, and wait for the operation to finish.
The console displays file dates. Record or photograph the newest timestamp if you have several profiles or manual saves. A USB copy can later be copied back to system storage or to another PS4.
Restore a PS4 USB save
- Connect the USB device containing the backup.
- Open Settings > Application Saved Data Management > Saved Data on USB Storage Device > Copy to System Storage.
- Select the game and save file.
- Compare the displayed dates with the save already on the console before confirming an overwrite.
Restoring an older file over a newer one can remove recent progress. If the console warns about an overwrite, stop and verify which copy is newer rather than accepting automatically.
Use PlayStation Plus cloud storage for PS4 saves
Upload from a PS4
PlayStation Plus is required for cloud storage. On a PS4, open Settings > Application Data Management > Saved Data in System Storage > Upload to Online Storage. Select the game and files, then start the upload. To retrieve a cloud copy, use Saved Data in Online Storage > Download to System Storage.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Check the cloud file’s date before downloading. If the console contains newer progress, downloading an older cloud file can overwrite it. When the game is about to leave a catalog, do a manual upload even if automatic uploads are enabled; that gives you a current timestamp to verify.
Cloud capacity and file limits
Sony’s current guidance, checked in 2026, lists up to 100 GB for PS4 saved data and a limit of 1,000 PS4 saved-data files. These service limits can change, so check the current storage screen before relying on them. The figures describe the service allowance, not the size of a particular game’s save.

Make a full PS4 console backup
Use a full backup when you are replacing a console, preparing for a drive failure or want a broader recovery point than one game’s save. It includes saved data as part of the console backup, but restoration is destructive to the destination console.
Prepare the USB drive
- Format the drive as FAT32 or exFAT so the PS4 can use it for the backup.
- Ensure the drive has at least twice the storage space used by the backup file. The requirement is relative to the backup size, not a universal fixed capacity.
- Synchronize trophies before starting. Trophy synchronization is separate from saved-data copying and should be completed while the console is online.
Create and restore the backup
- Open Settings > System > Back Up and Restore > Back Up.
- Select saved data as part of the backup and follow the prompts until the console confirms completion.
- Label the drive and note the backup date so you can distinguish it from older images.
- To recover, use the PS4’s Back Up and Restore menu and select the intended backup.
Restoring a full PS4 backup erases data on the PS4. Preserve anything created after the backup, confirm the selected image and use this workflow only when replacing the console’s current contents is acceptable.
Back up PS5-native game saves
Use PlayStation Plus cloud storage
For a game built for PS5, the practical save-level backup is cloud storage. Open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Saved Data (PS5), then configure Sync Saved Data > Auto-Sync Saved Data or use the upload controls. Check the sync status and the last-uploaded time before the game leaves the catalog.
Sony’s official support statement is: “You can’t copy PS5 saved data from your PS5 console to a USB drive.” This refers to copying individual PS5 saved data from the console to USB. It does not prohibit cloud storage or a full-console backup.
Sony’s current guidance lists up to 100 GB for PS5 saved data in PlayStation Plus cloud storage. The allowance is a service figure checked in 2026 and may change. Confirm that the correct account is signed in and that the game appears in the saved-data list before assuming the upload succeeded.

Use a full PS5 USB backup when necessary
A PS5 can back up the console to a compatible USB storage device through its system backup workflow. This is a whole-console recovery method, not an exported PS5 save file that you can browse and copy individually. Restoring it erases data saved on the PS5, so copy or synchronize any newer data first and verify the selected backup.

Do not confuse the backup device with a USB extended-storage drive used to store and run games. The extended-storage drive is formatted for game storage and cannot serve as the PS5 console-backup device in that same role. Follow the PS5’s current System > System Software > Back Up and Restore prompts and keep the backup drive dedicated to the console image when possible.
Copy a PS4-game save from a PS5 to USB
A PS5 can manage saves for PS4 games. This is the exception to the PS5 USB rule: the save belongs to the PS4 version of the game, even though the console is a PS5.
- Open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Saved Data (PS4) > Upload or Delete from Console Storage > Copy to USB Drive.
- Select the PS4 game.
- Select the save files and choose Copy.
- Check the file date on the confirmation screen and keep the USB device safely stored.
This procedure does not make a PS5-native save exportable. If the title has both PS4 and PS5 versions, identify which version you played before choosing the menu. A PS4 save and a PS5 save are different save-data types, and a game’s own transfer feature may impose additional requirements.
Understand streamed and downloaded PlayStation Plus games
Sony distinguishes between a game streamed through PlayStation Plus and a game downloaded to the console. A streamed game’s save is stored by PlayStation, while a downloaded game’s save is stored on the console. Moving between those forms uses cloud storage.

- For a streamed game, use the service’s save-copy controls to place the streamed save in online storage.
- For a downloaded game, upload the console save to online storage before switching devices or versions.
- When changing from streaming to a download, or the reverse, download the cloud copy for the destination game type and verify its timestamp.
Do not infer that a streamed save is present on the console merely because you played the game there. Check the relevant online-storage entry and complete the copy before access changes.
Verify the backup before the game disappears
Use a deliberate final-save routine
- Launch the game while you still have access.
- Create a manual save at a clearly identifiable point, then exit to the console menu so the save finishes writing.
- For PS4 saves, copy that file to USB, upload it to PlayStation Plus, or do both.
- For a PS5-native save, trigger cloud synchronization and wait for the current upload time to appear; use a full-console backup if you need a second local recovery point.
- For a PS4 game on PS5, use the Saved Data (PS4) menu to copy to USB or upload to the cloud.
- Open the destination list and compare its timestamp with the manual save. A backup with an old date is not confirmation that the latest progress was preserved.
Keep both the account and the physical copy safe
- Leave the USB device connected until the console reports that copying is complete.
- Do not format the drive after copying, and do not store the only copy beside the console.
- Use the same PlayStation account when checking cloud saves on another console.
- Keep notes about whether each backup is for the PS4 or PS5 version of the game.
Cloud versus USB: which should you use?
| Method | Convenience | Account or subscription dependency | Portability | Recovery scope |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PS4 individual USB copy | One-time local copy after connecting a drive | No PlayStation Plus cloud subscription required | Can be copied to system storage or another PS4 | Selected PS4 save files |
| PlayStation Plus cloud | Automatic sync or manual upload | Requires PlayStation Plus and the correct account | Available through compatible consoles signed in to that account | Selected PS4 or PS5 save data within the service limits |
| PS4 full-console backup | More preparation and USB capacity | Uses a FAT32- or exFAT-formatted drive | Restores a console state rather than a single save | Broader PS4 console recovery |
| PS5 full-console backup | Whole-console backup process | Requires a compatible PS5 backup drive | Restores the console image | Broader PS5 console recovery |
For important progress, using two independent methods is reasonable: for example, a PS4 USB copy plus a cloud upload, or a PS5 cloud upload plus a full-console backup. The extra copy is useful only if you verify that both carry the newest timestamp.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming a catalog removal deletes the save
A game leaving a catalog and a save being removed are separate events. Preserve the save, then verify whether your account still has a playable entitlement or whether you need another access route. There is no universal Sony statement guaranteeing continued access or indefinite save retention for every catalog and membership change.
Trying to export a PS5 save to a flash drive
Individual PS5-native saves cannot be copied to USB. Use PlayStation Plus cloud storage or a full-console PS5 backup instead. A drive that works for PS4 save files or game extended storage does not change this restriction.
Using the wrong menu on a PS5
Saved Data (PS5) is for PS5-native saves and cloud synchronization. Saved Data (PS4) is where the PS5 exposes USB copying for PS4-game saves. Select the version you actually played.

Restoring an older cloud file
Cloud storage is not automatically proof that its copy is newest. Check the last upload or file date before downloading. If the local file is newer, upload it first or preserve it on USB when the game is a PS4 title.
Restoring a full backup casually
Full-console restoration erases data on the destination PS4 or PS5. It is not a safe way to test one save. Preserve newer screenshots, captures, settings and saves before beginning, and confirm the backup date and console before accepting the restore.
Confusing game storage with backup storage
A PS5 USB extended-storage drive for installed games is not the same as the device used for a PS5 full-console backup. Likewise, a PS4 full backup requires FAT32 or exFAT and space equal to at least twice the backup file size. Follow the console’s format and capacity prompts rather than assuming any available drive will work.
Moving progress to another console
PS4 to another PS4
Copy the selected save from USB to the second PS4 through Saved Data on USB Storage Device > Copy to System Storage, or download it from PlayStation Plus online storage. Compare dates on both consoles before replacing a newer save.
PS4 save on a PS5
If you played the PS4 version on a PS5, use the PS5’s Saved Data (PS4) > Upload or Delete from Console Storage > Copy to USB Drive controls for a local copy, or use cloud storage. A game may separately require an in-game import step when moving from a PS4 release to a PS5 release; the save backup alone does not promise cross-version compatibility.
PS5 to another PS5
Use PlayStation Plus cloud synchronization or the PS5’s console-transfer and full-backup options. Individual PS5 save files still cannot be exported to USB. Before changing consoles, wait for the latest sync and check the destination account.
What to do on the day access ends
- Do not uninstall the game before making the final save and verifying the copy.
- Confirm the title and version in the console’s saved-data menus.
- Check the specific game’s entitlement for your region and account.
- Upload or copy the newest save using the method available for that save type.
- Record the backup date and keep the USB drive disconnected after the copy is complete.
If the game is already unavailable, you can still inspect local and cloud saved-data menus. What you cannot infer from the presence of a save is whether the license will allow the game to launch. Resolve access through the title’s current store, disc or subscription entitlement rather than treating the backup as proof of ownership.
