Choose Persona if you want a modern Japanese setting, school or everyday-life routines, friendships, romance and young characters growing through supernatural problems. Choose mainline Shin Megami Tensei if you would rather explore a ruined world, negotiate with demons, build a demon party and decide which competing values will shape the future.
Both are Atlus role-playing series with supernatural stories, but their official descriptions put the player’s attention in different places. Persona 5 Royal is a useful modern Persona example; Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance is the current expanded example for SMT. Neither series is objectively the better choice, and an individual entry can depart from its franchise’s usual emphasis.

The short answer: which series fits your interests?
| If you are most interested in… | Start with… | Why |
|---|---|---|
| School life, a modern Japanese city and relationships | Persona | Atlus foregrounds everyday life, friendship, romance, occult incidents and young people growing through difficulty. |
| Ruined landscapes, demon recruitment and survival | Shin Megami Tensei | Atlus foregrounds a demon-overrun world, conversations with demons, competing values and the fate of the protagonist and the world. |
| A story that alternates between ordinary routines and supernatural crises | Persona 5 Royal | It presents the Persona formula through a modern-life context and an occult conflict. |
| Exploration of a post-apocalyptic world with two story paths | Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance | It includes the original Canon of Creation and the new Canon of Vengeance, plus expanded areas, demons, choices and gameplay improvements. |
This is a preference decision, not a quality ranking. If relationships and daily-life context are the reason you play an RPG, Persona is the safer first choice. If recruiting demons and navigating a devastated world are the stronger draw, start with SMT.
What Persona emphasizes
Everyday life is part of the adventure
Atlus describes Persona around modern Japanese city life, school, friendship, romance and occult events. The supernatural plot is therefore set against recognizable routines: meeting people, dealing with ordinary pressures and watching young characters change as they confront extraordinary problems. The contrast is central to the appeal. A quiet social situation and a dangerous otherworldly incident can both matter to the same character arc.
#1 Best Overall
The exact balance changes from one Persona game to another, so the series description is a guide to emphasis rather than a promise that every entry has identical schedules, locations or relationship systems. What remains consistent is the idea that personal bonds and self-development are not decoration around the RPG; they are part of how the story explains the heroes’ growth.
The supernatural party hook
Persona users awaken to an inner self that manifests in the form of inherited gods or demons. That premise gives the series a distinctive way to connect identity, mythology and combat. The characters’ personal struggles and the supernatural forms they call upon are presented as related parts of the same journey, rather than as unrelated story and battle systems.
For a new player, this means Persona typically asks you to care about two kinds of progress at once: what happens to the cast in their daily lives and how their supernatural abilities develop. If you want an RPG where conversations, friendship and romance have as much narrative presence as fighting, that dual focus is the clearest reason to choose Persona.
What mainline Shin Megami Tensei emphasizes
A world already in ruins
Atlus’s broad description of mainline Shin Megami Tensei starts from a very different place: a ruined, demon-overrun world. Instead of returning from an ordinary school day to an occult mystery, you generally move through a setting where the collapse of civilization and the struggle over what comes next are immediate realities.
The emphasis is on exploration, survival and the consequences of choosing between competing values. The protagonist’s decisions affect the fate of the world, so the central question is not only how to defeat the next threat. It is also which vision of order, freedom or human purpose deserves to prevail. Individual entries express those themes differently, but they are a reliable guide to the series’ scale and tone.
Conversation and recruitment are core activities
SMT’s signature party hook is speaking with demons and recruiting them as allies. Demons are not merely enemies waiting to be defeated; they are potential members of your team and resources for adapting to the dangers of the world. That makes negotiation and party construction part of the adventure’s identity.
This does not mean SMT lacks character interaction. The broad franchise description foregrounds demon allies, values and world-scale fate rather than school relationships, while individual games can add substantial conversations. In Vengeance, for example, special conversations with demons, friends and Aogami take place in Demon Haunts. The fair comparison is therefore about what each series places in the foreground, not a claim that one has characters and the other does not.

| Decision point | Persona | Mainline Shin Megami Tensei |
|---|---|---|
| Where the story begins | Modern Japanese city life, often including school and other everyday settings. | A ruined or destabilized world in which demons and competing ideologies define the stakes. |
| What fills your time between major battles | Friendships, romance, personal problems, school or city activities and occult investigation. | Field exploration, demon conversations, recruitment, party management and discovering how the world reached its current state. |
| How supernatural allies are framed | Characters awaken to an inner self manifested as inherited gods or demons. | The protagonist talks with demons and recruits them directly as allies. |
| Typical narrative scale | Occult incidents intersect with the lives and growth of a young cast. | The protagonist’s choices are tied to the fate and future structure of the world. |
| Best first example from the current catalog | Persona 5 Royal | Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance |
These are series-level tendencies, not a rule that every game uses the same structure. Check the description of the specific entry you plan to buy if one feature is essential to you.
Choose Persona when relationships are the point
You want a cast whose ordinary lives matter
Persona is the better fit if you want to know what the characters do when they are not fighting. Atlus’s description explicitly combines young people, friendship, romance and growth with supernatural difficulty. The result is an RPG in which the context around a crisis can be as important as the crisis itself.

- Become the ultimate Phantom Thief and defy conventions, discover the power within, and fight for justice in the definitive version of Personal 5 Royal

This is especially appealing if you enjoy stories that let a party become a group of friends rather than only a roster of combat roles. You can follow how characters respond to pressure, how their relationships change and how the modern setting shapes their problems. The supernatural elements gain emotional weight because they are connected to lives that began in an ordinary world.
You prefer a contemporary setting to a wasteland
If a recognizable city, school and day-to-day routine sound more inviting than ruined terrain, Persona offers the more direct match. Its occult events interrupt normal life, creating a rhythm between familiar scenes and dangerous investigations. That rhythm is the series’ defining contrast.

You want romance or social bonds explicitly foregrounded
Atlus names friendship and romance in its Persona description, making them a legitimate selection criterion rather than an assumption imported from a particular fan community. Individual games differ in their exact systems and cast, but a reader who wants relationships to sit alongside the RPG should begin here.
Choose SMT when demons and ideological choices are the stronger draw
You want to build a team from supernatural recruits
SMT is the natural choice if the idea of speaking with demons, persuading them to join and adapting your party to a hostile world is more exciting than maintaining a primarily human cast. Recruitment changes how you think about encounters: an enemy can become a future ally, and the composition of your team is part of solving the next problem.
You want exploration to feel like survival
The ruined-world premise gives SMT a different kind of momentum. You are not simply visiting a strange location for an episode; you are learning how to operate in a world whose social and physical order has broken down. Exploration, demon encounters and discoveries about the setting all support that survival-focused tone.
You want the protagonist’s choices to define the world’s future
Mainline SMT foregrounds competing values and the fate of the world. Choose it when you want the story’s major decisions to be philosophical and civilization-scale, not only personal. The exact conclusions and ideologies differ by entry, but the central attraction is the responsibility of choosing what kind of future should exist.
Modern Persona example: Persona 5 Royal
Persona 5 Royal is a practical starting point for the Persona side of this comparison. It is an Atlus catalog entry that presents the franchise’s combination of modern life, young characters, relationships and supernatural conflict. The official product page lists a Physical Standard version and platform choices including Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Windows, Steam, PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch.
Those platform and edition details can change by region, so verify the listing for your country before buying. If you are searching for a physical copy, the precise phrase Persona 5 Royal Nintendo Switch identifies both the game and the platform, but you should still confirm the edition, regional compatibility and current stock on the retailer’s page.
Do not treat Persona 5 Royal as a guarantee that every Persona entry uses the same cast, setting or balance of activities. Use it as a concrete example of the series’ modern-life-and-relationships identity.

Modern SMT example: Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance
Two campaigns in one expanded release
Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance is the clearest current example of SMT’s post-apocalyptic, demon-focused approach. It contains two story paths: the original Canon of Creation and the new Canon of Vengeance. Atlus describes Vengeance as an expanded version with new locations, demons, choices and improvements to battle and field exploration.

You can experience the original path while also having access to the added storyline and expanded content, rather than buying a separate edition solely to see the newer route.
Da’at, the Nahobino and the central conflict
The game takes place in the post-apocalyptic world of Da’at. The protagonist becomes a Nahobino, a powerful being at the center of a struggle between light and dark. The journey is therefore both physical and ideological: you explore a dangerous landscape, recruit demons and make choices connected to the fate of the world.
Expanded demon and conversation features
In a June 4, 2024 PlayStation Blog feature, Atlus game director Shigeo Komori wrote: “SMT V: Vengeance introduces a multitude of new skills across 270 new and familiar demons, including powerful new Magatsuhi Skills.” The figure refers to the scope of that skills discussion across new and familiar demons; it is not a claim that 270 demons were newly added.
Vengeance also includes Demon Haunts, where special conversations can occur with demons, friends and Aogami. This matters when comparing the series with Persona: SMT’s broad identity is still demon recruitment and world-scale choices, but Vengeance provides more room for direct character and companion interaction than a simplistic “SMT has no social scenes” description would suggest.

There is no directly comparable official difficulty measure proving that every SMT game is harder than every Persona game. Difficulty belongs to the individual entry, the selected setting and the options available to the player.
Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance offers selectable difficulty and additional accessibility features. It also includes a punishing Godborn mode that becomes available after specific tasks. That combination means a player can encounter a demanding optional challenge without treating the entire game as a single, unchangeable difficulty level.

A practical decision process
- Pick your preferred setting. Choose Persona if a modern Japanese city, school and everyday routines sound appealing. Choose SMT if a ruined, demon-overrun world is the stronger image.
- Pick your preferred party relationship. Choose Persona if you want the cast’s friendships, romance and personal growth foregrounded. Choose SMT if you want to negotiate with demons and recruit them as allies.
- Pick your preferred stakes. Choose Persona if you want occult incidents to intersect with individual lives. Choose SMT if you want choices tied to competing values and the fate of the world.
- Pick a current entry. Start with Persona 5 Royal for the Persona profile or Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance for the expanded SMT profile.
- Check the purchase details. Verify platform, edition, region and physical availability. The official pages list options, but stock and regional listings can change.
Common misconceptions that lead to a bad recommendation
“SMT has no character interaction.”
That is too broad. Atlus’s franchise description emphasizes demons, values and world-scale fate, but Vengeance includes conversations with demons, friends and Aogami in Demon Haunts. The useful distinction is emphasis, not the presence or absence of dialogue.
“Every SMT game is harder than every Persona game.”
No official head-to-head difficulty statistic establishes that. Vengeance has selectable difficulty, accessibility options and an optional Godborn challenge, so assess the specific game and settings.
“Every Persona game is a school romance simulator.”
School, friendship and romance are prominent in Atlus’s series description, but entries differ. Treat those elements as a strong series tendency and a reason to investigate a particular game, not as a promise that every title uses an identical schedule or relationship system.
“The expanded SMT release is just the original game with a cosmetic upgrade.”
Vengeance adds a second story path, new locations, demons and choices, along with battle and field-exploration improvements. It is the version to identify when you specifically want the expanded release rather than the original Switch-focused edition.
Which one should you buy first?
Buy Persona 5 Royal first if your ideal RPG alternates between an ordinary modern life and a supernatural mystery, and if relationships and the growth of a young cast are essential to your enjoyment.
Buy Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance first if you want to explore post-apocalyptic Da’at, recruit demons through conversation, adjust your party to a hostile environment and make choices connected to the world’s future. Its two story paths and expanded features make it the most complete current illustration of SMT’s core appeal.
When the choice is close, decide which activity you would miss more: spending time with human companions in an everyday setting, or persuading demons to join you while you cross a ruined world. That answer is a more reliable guide than a claim that one series is universally superior.
