Back up a PS4 save to a FAT32- or exFAT-formatted USB drive, and back up PS5 saves to PlayStation Plus cloud storage plus a full-console backup. A PS5 does not allow an individual PS5 save to be copied directly to USB. Before a shutdown, confirm which progress is stored locally and which exists only on the publisher’s servers, because no backup can restore an online service, matchmaking, rankings, virtual currency or server-hosted creations after they are removed.
What to do first
Find the game publisher’s shutdown notice and record the exact date, time and time zone. Then determine whether the game still works offline and whether its progression is saved on your console or on a server. Make your backup while the game and your PlayStation Network account are still accessible.

- Sign in to the PSN account that owns the save. Saves are associated with the account and console profile that created them.
- Sync trophies. On PS4, open the function screen, choose Trophies, press OPTIONS, and select Sync Trophies.
- Create a local backup. Use the PS4 USB procedure or the PS5 full-console backup procedure below.
- Create a cloud copy if you have PlayStation Plus. Upload the current save and verify its upload time.
- Keep the game installed and patched. Download required updates before delisting or service removal prevents access.
- Document server-only progress. Capture screenshots or video of online inventories, rankings, user creations and other data that cannot be exported as a save file.
Keep two independent copies when possible: cloud storage and a local USB or full-console archive. Label the physical drive with the PSN account, console, game and backup date, and store it separately from the console.
PS4: make a complete USB backup
PS4 is the simpler platform for a physical archive because its system backup includes saved data. Sony requires a USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT, with at least twice the free space occupied by the backup file.

Prepare the USB drive
- Use a reliable USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT.
- Leave at least twice the expected backup-file size free. The console may reject a drive that has only the nominal file size available.
- Copy anything important off the drive before using it. Do not format a drive as extended storage if it contains the only copy of another file.
Run the PS4 backup
- Insert the prepared USB drive into the PS4.
- Open Settings > System > Back Up and Restore > Back Up.
- Select the content to include and make sure Saved Data is selected.
- Give the backup a recognizable name, such as the console and date, and start it.
- Wait for the completion message before removing the drive.
Retain the drive as an archive. A system backup is broader than a single save and can include other console data, so its size varies with what you select and what is stored on the PS4.
PS4: upload or download one save with PlayStation Plus
Cloud storage is useful when you want a single game save rather than a complete console image. On the PS4:
- Highlight the game in Library.
- Press OPTIONS.
- Choose Upload/Download Saved Data.
- Select the save and upload it to PlayStation Plus online storage.
To restore it, use the same menu and choose the download option. Confirm the local save’s date before replacing it; downloading an older cloud copy can overwrite newer local progress.

On PS5, Sony provides separate cloud quotas of up to 100 GB for PS5 saved data and 100 GB for PS4 saved data in current support documentation (accessed 2026). Cloud storage requires an active PlayStation Plus subscription and access to the correct PSN account.

Upload a PS5 or PS4 save manually
- Open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings.
- Choose Saved Data (PS5) for a native PS5 game or Saved Data (PS4) for a PS4 game running on the PS5.
- Open the cloud upload/download controls.
- Select the game and save, then upload it.
Turn on automatic sync
- From Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings, open Saved Data (PS5).
- Enable Auto-Sync Saved Data.
- Return to the saved-data settings, open Saved Data (PS4), and enable Auto-Upload for PS4 games.
- Leave the PS5 connected to the internet in Rest Mode so synchronization can run.
Check the cloud timestamp after the console has synchronized. If a game has multiple profiles or slots, verify that the current slot is included rather than assuming every piece of progress is represented by one file.
PS5: understand the USB limitation
Sony explicitly does not allow an individual PS5 saved-data file to be copied from the console directly to a USB drive. A USB stick therefore cannot serve as a standalone PS5-save export in the way it can for PS4 saves.
The local alternative is a full PS5 console backup made through the console’s Back Up and Restore workflow. Use the current Back Up Your PS5 menu shown on the console, select the data categories that include saved data, and wait for the backup to finish before disconnecting the drive. This archive is tied to the console backup process rather than being a portable, individually selectable save file.
Because menu labels and available categories can change with system software, follow the wording displayed on your updated PS5. Make the full backup before the shutdown date, and keep the drive separate from the console. A full backup is most useful if you may restore the game on another PS5 or need to recover the console’s broader data set; it is not a way to extract one PS5 save and edit or share it independently.

Moving saves between PS4 and PS5
PS4 save to PS5
Sony supports copying a PS4 save from USB to a PS5. You can also move compatible saved data with the console transfer tool. The PS4 and PS5 must use the same PSN account, and both consoles should be connected to the same network during the transfer.
Compatibility remains game-specific. A PS4 save may transfer even when a game’s PS5 version uses a different save format, but the game must provide a supported migration path. Check the game’s own instructions before deleting the PS4 installation or local save.
PS5 to PS5
The PS5-to-PS5 transfer tool can move compatible saved data when both consoles are signed in to the same account and connected to the same network. This is a console migration, not a method for creating a freely portable PS5-save file on USB.
Protect the source until the destination is verified
- Do not erase the original console or overwrite its save until the destination launches the game and shows the expected progress.
- Keep the cloud copy available during the move.
- Check whether the game has separate PS4 and PS5 editions; the editions may store progress differently.
What a save backup can—and cannot—preserve
A backup preserves files the game actually writes to local saved data. It cannot recreate a server account, a matchmaking service, an online ranking, a user-generated-content server, a live inventory held remotely or an online-only game.

Examples from Sony’s shutdown notices
- inFAMOUS 2: user-generated-content access ends while the offline campaign remains playable.
- GUNS UP!: the game becomes unplayable because it requires online access.
- Gran Turismo Sport: Community, Open Lobby, Sport Mode, online features and online items are removed, while offline portions remain.
Polyphony Digital’s end-of-service notice for Gran Turismo Sport says that “all gameplay progression will continue to be saved through Saved Data on the PlayStation®4 system.” That distinction—local Saved Data versus server-held features—is the key question for any other game facing closure.
USB drives: save backup versus extended storage
A small FAT32- or exFAT-formatted USB flash drive used for a PS4 backup is not the same product category as a USB extended-storage drive used to install games.

Before formatting any drive for extended storage, copy valuable backups elsewhere. Formatting can erase existing content, and extended storage does not solve the PS5 individual-save limitation.

Shutdown-day checklist
- Write down the publisher’s exact shutdown date and time zone.
- Read whether the game is online-only, whether an offline mode remains, and whether an offline patch or save migration is promised.
- Sign in to the correct PSN account.
- Sync trophies while the service is available.
- For PS4, complete the USB system backup with Saved Data selected.
- For PS5, upload both PS5 and PS4 saves to PlayStation Plus if applicable, and complete a full-console backup for a local archive.
- Verify cloud upload timestamps and, where practical, download one test save to confirm that the process works.
- Keep the game installed and download required updates before delisting or service removal.
- Record which progress is local and which is server-side.
- Capture screenshots or video of online inventories, rankings and creations that cannot be exported.
- Store the USB archive separately from the console and make a second copy for irreplaceable progress.
Troubleshooting common backup failures
The PS4 says the USB drive cannot be used
Confirm that the drive is formatted as FAT32 or exFAT, has enough free space for at least twice the backup file size and is connected directly to the console. Move unrelated files off the drive, then retry the backup. Do not reformat until anything valuable on the drive exists somewhere else.

The PS5 cloud copy is older than the save on the console
Check that the PS5 is online, leave it in Rest Mode, and inspect the saved-data screen for the latest upload timestamp. Upload manually before shutting down the game. If the game was played on another console, ensure both systems use the same PSN account and decide which copy is the current one before downloading.
The transferred save does not appear in the game
Verify the account, game edition and region, then confirm that the transfer completed without interruption. Keep the source console intact and try the game’s own import or migration command if it provides one. A PS4 save is not guaranteed to be readable by every PS5 edition.
The game launches but online progress is missing
This usually means the missing data was server-side. A local or cloud save cannot recreate a closed matchmaking service, ranking database, user-generated-content server or virtual-currency balance. Preserve screenshots or video of that material before closure instead of relying on a save restore.

A USB archive is independent of a subscription but requires you to protect the physical drive. PlayStation Plus makes automatic synchronization easier but depends on account access and continued cloud availability. Neither option preserves a feature that the publisher never stores as local saved data.
After the shutdown
Do not assume that a successful backup means the game will remain playable. Keep the console, game installation and required patches available, and restore a save only after confirming that the game still starts offline. If the publisher released an offline conversion patch, install it before attempting to use the archived save. For server-dependent games, the archive may be useful only for documentation because the client can no longer authenticate or retrieve the required online state.
When restoring, use the same PSN account, keep the original backup untouched, and test the restored game before deleting any other copy. For PS4, restore through the console’s backup or saved-data controls. For PS5, restore the full console backup or download the cloud save through Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings, selecting the correct PS5 or PS4 category.
