Back up first, then update. Close the game, confirm its newest save is synchronized to PlayStation Plus cloud storage, and—if the save matters—make a second local copy with a FAT32- or exFAT-formatted USB drive. A normal PS5 system-software update is not the same as Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software): the reset option deletes user data.
What to do before updating
- Close the game from the PS5 home screen so its latest changes are written.
- Ensure the console is online and check the save’s cloud status.
- For additional protection, create a full-console USB backup.
- Run the update from the ordinary system-software menu, not the destructive reset command.
No published independent statistic establishes how often routine PS5 updates cause save loss. The practical protection is having a verified cloud copy, a local backup, or both.

Option 1: Synchronize saves with PlayStation Plus cloud storage
Cloud storage is the most targeted recovery method: it focuses on saved data rather than making a copy of the whole console. It requires an active PlayStation Plus entitlement and an internet connection.

- Open Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode.
- Enable Stay Connected to the Internet.
- Open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings.
- Choose Saved Data (PS5) for PS5 games or Saved Data (PS4) for PS4 games.
- For PS5 games, select Sync Saved Data > Auto-Sync Saved Data. For PS4 games, select Auto-Upload.
Leave the console connected to the internet in Rest Mode long enough for synchronization to finish. Before starting the update, use the same menu’s manual controls—Upload or Delete from Console Storage and Download or Delete from Cloud Storage—to verify that the current save has uploaded.

Cloud capacity and file limits
PlayStation’s current Plus guidance lists up to 100 GB of PS5 saved data, up to 100 GB of PS4 saved data, and up to 1,000 PS4 saved-data files. These are service limits, not a guarantee that every account or title uses the space in the same way.
Option 2: Make a full PS5 backup on USB
A USB backup creates a local copy of broader console content: games and apps, saved data, screenshots, video clips, and settings. It is useful when you want protection beyond saves, but restoring it has a major consequence: the restore process erases data currently on the console.
Choose and prepare the drive
Use a USB storage device formatted as FAT32 or exFAT. A drive configured as PS5 USB extended storage for installed games is different. Sony says the extended-storage format cannot be used for backup data, so do not assume a game-storage drive can serve as the backup destination. A FAT32/exFAT-compatible flash drive is for console backup, not for installing and running PS5 games as extended storage.

Create the backup
- Connect the FAT32- or exFAT-formatted USB drive to the PS5.
- Open Settings > System > System Software > Back Up and Restore > Back Up Your PS5.
- Select the data categories you want included and choose Next.
- Select Back Up.
- Allow the console to restart and wait for the on-screen message Backup complete.
Do not disconnect the drive or power off the console during the operation. Sony’s backup documentation states: “Don’t turn off your PS5® console while backing up or restoring data.” Safely retain the drive after completion rather than immediately reformatting it for another purpose.
What the USB backup does not include
Trophies are not included in the full-console backup. Synchronize trophies separately before updating: open the relevant trophy screen while signed in and online so the latest trophy information is associated with your account.
PS5 saves versus PS4 saves
The two save formats do not have identical transfer options.

Do not follow a PS4 save-transfer guide expecting it to expose individual PS5 saves. For PS5-native games, use cloud storage or the complete console backup.

- Open Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings.
- Choose the available update and follow the on-screen prompts.
- Keep the console connected to power and do not interrupt the restart.
Safe Mode also includes Update System Software. That is an update route, while Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) is a separate destructive operation that deletes all user data. Do not select the reset command merely because you intend to install a routine update. If installing from USB in Safe Mode, use only the official update file and follow Sony’s file and folder requirements.
Restoring a USB backup: risks and requirements
Account and software-version requirements
Backup data is linked to the PlayStation account that created it. Restoring to another console requires signing in with that same account. The destination console’s system software must be the same version as, or newer than, the version installed when the backup was made.

What restoration does
Restoring a full backup replaces the console’s current state and erases data presently saved on it. Sony warns that erased data cannot be restored. If you only need one missing save, downloading that save from cloud storage is more targeted and avoids replacing unrelated current data.
Before selecting Restore
- Copy or synchronize any newer saves and media you cannot afford to lose.
- Confirm you are using the account that made the backup.
- Check that the console software meets the backup’s version requirement.
- Understand that restoration is an all-console operation, not an individual-file import.

Common problems and fixes
The USB drive is not offered as a backup destination
Check that it is formatted FAT32 or exFAT and is not configured as USB extended storage for games. Reformatting erases the drive, so copy any files you need elsewhere first.

Do not download it over the newer local save. First close the game, reconnect to the internet, and use the manual upload controls under Saved Data and Game/App Settings. If the newer local save has already been overwritten, the older cloud version may be the only available copy.

The backup stopped or the console was powered off
Reconnect the drive, restart the backup, and leave the console powered throughout. Treat an interrupted operation as unverified until the console reports Backup complete.
You are considering “Reset PS5”
Stop and distinguish the commands. A standard update is under System Software Update and Settings; Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) deletes user data and is not a normal update step.
