Make a full PS5 backup to a USB drive before changing the console: open Settings > System > System Software > Back Up and Restore > Back Up Your PS5, use a drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT, select the data categories you need, and wait for the console to confirm completion. Add a separate PlayStation Plus cloud sync for individual saves when available, and synchronize trophies separately. Do not use a USB drive currently formatted as PS5 extended storage; it uses a different format. Keep the completed backup disconnected and protected because restoring it erases the data currently on the console.
What to back up before modifying a PS5
A PS5 modification can require a reset, firmware recovery, or other operation that leaves the console without its current user data. Sony’s built-in backup is the broadest supported way to preserve that data before you proceed. It can include four categories:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Games and apps: installed game and application data selected for the backup.
- Saved data: PS5 and PS4 saves stored on the console.
- Screenshots and video clips: captures saved in the Media Gallery.
- Settings: console and user settings included by the backup process.
The backup is a console archive rather than a folder of separately usable save files. You restore it through the PS5’s own Back Up and Restore menu, not by browsing the USB drive and copying files back manually.
Sony does not publish a PS5 homebrew installation or compatibility procedure in its backup, restore, cloud-save, storage, and transfer documentation. The steps below are therefore about preserving recoverable data before a modification you have chosen; they do not imply Sony endorses, supports, or guarantees homebrew software.

USB requirements: FAT32 or exFAT, not extended storage
For a PS5 system backup, prepare a USB storage drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT. The drive must have enough free space for the categories you select. A drive that works as PS5 extended storage for installed games is not automatically suitable for this job: extended storage is formatted differently and cannot also serve as PS5 backup media in that format.
Choosing and preparing the drive
- Use the search description “FAT32 exFAT USB flash drive for PS5 backup” when looking for suitable media.
- Check the drive’s current filesystem on a computer and reformat it to FAT32 or exFAT if necessary. Reformatting deletes existing contents, so copy anything important elsewhere first.
- Connect the drive directly to the PS5 rather than through a hub or adapter. Sony cautions that not every USB device works with every console.
- Leave more free space than the estimated backup size, especially if you are including games, applications, and a large capture library.
The often-cited 250 GB minimum to 8 TB maximum applies to Sony’s published range for USB extended storage used for game data. It is storage guidance for that separate use, not a filesystem rule or a guarantee that a backup drive of any particular capacity will work.
Step-by-step: create the PS5 backup
- Finish any downloads and close running games. A backup is most predictable when the console is idle and connected to stable power. If the console is updating, allow the update to finish first.
- Prepare the USB drive. Format it as FAT32 or exFAT and confirm that it has sufficient free space. Remember that formatting removes the files already on it.
- Connect the drive directly to the PS5. Insert it into a USB port on the console. If the PS5 does not recognize it, disconnect other USB storage devices and try another port or a different compatible drive.
- Open the backup menu. On the home screen, go to Settings > System > System Software > Back Up and Restore > Back Up Your PS5.
- Select what to include. Choose games and apps, saved data, screenshots and video clips, settings, or the combination that matches your recovery needs. A minimal save-only strategy is smaller, while including games and captures makes the archive more comprehensive and takes longer and more space.
- Start the backup. Select Back Up. The console restarts and performs the operation; do not unplug the USB drive or remove power while it is working.
- Wait for the completion confirmation. Continue only after the PS5 displays Backup complete and completes the subsequent restart. An interrupted process should not be treated as a finished backup.
- Record what you made. Note the backup date, the categories selected, the console used, and the USB drive’s identity. If you create multiple archives over time, this record prevents accidentally restoring an older one.
- Eject or disconnect the drive safely. Keep it disconnected, dry, and protected from loss or accidental reformatting until you have finished the modification and any recovery testing.
Back up individual saves with PlayStation Plus as a second copy
PS5 saved data cannot be copied individually from a PS5 console to a USB drive. Sony’s PS4-to-PS5 transfer guidance distinguishes this from PS4 saves, which can be copied to USB. For PS5 saves, use the console backup above and, when PlayStation Plus is available, cloud synchronization as a separate copy.

Automatic synchronization
Sony documents automatic PS5 save synchronization when the console is connected to the internet in rest mode and automatic sync is enabled. Before modifying the system, connect the console to the internet, make sure the relevant games have finished saving, and leave the PS5 in rest mode long enough for synchronization to complete. A cloud icon or sync status in the PS5 save-data controls can help you confirm that the latest version has uploaded.
Manual cloud controls
Use the PS5’s saved-data controls to check, upload, or download cloud copies as applicable. PS4 saves can be manually uploaded or downloaded. PS5 saves are synchronized through the PS5 cloud-save controls rather than copied as ordinary USB files.
Current Sony support documentation lists PlayStation Plus cloud capacity as 100 GB of PS5 saved data and 100 GB of PS4 saved data. That capacity is for the service and account, not a promise that every game’s save can be restored independently of its game version or account.

Synchronize trophies separately
Trophies are not a substitute for a save backup. Sony’s transfer checklist treats trophy synchronization as a separate step, so perform it before any reset, restore, or other operation that could remove local console information. Open the trophy area while signed in and allow synchronization to finish, then verify that the console has completed the sync before you begin the modification.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUSB backup versus PlayStation Plus cloud storage
Using both methods covers different failure modes. The USB archive is an offline, console-level recovery package; cloud storage is an account-linked route for individual saves. Neither should be mistaken for the other.
| Consideration | PS5 USB backup | PlayStation Plus cloud storage |
|---|---|---|
| Data scope | Can include games and apps, saved data, screenshots and video clips, and settings selected in the backup menu. | Focused on saved data: 100 GB for PS5 saves and 100 GB for PS4 saves under current Sony support documentation. |
| Connection requirement | Once the archive is created, the drive can be stored offline. | Requires internet access for synchronization and account access for retrieval. |
| Individual PS5 saves | Cannot be browsed or copied as separate PS5 save files; they are part of the console backup. | Provides the practical individual-save synchronization route when PlayStation Plus is available. |
| Overwrite risk | Restoring erases current data on the PS5 before applying the backup. | Downloading or syncing a save can replace the local version, so check dates before choosing which copy to keep. |
| Account dependence | Backups are linked to the PlayStation account. If the console was never signed in to PlayStation services, Sony limits restoration to that same console; restoring to another console requires the same account. | Cloud saves require the PlayStation account that owns the cloud data and an active service entitlement where required. |
| Independent reuse | The drive can be stored as a separate archive, but the contents are intended to be restored through a compatible PS5 backup menu. | The copy remains on Sony’s cloud service and is accessed through compatible PlayStation systems and the associated account. |
What happens when you restore a PS5 backup
Restoration is destructive to the console’s current contents. Sony states that when restoring data, the PS5 erases all data saved on the console. Treat the restore as a replacement operation, not as an additive import.

System-software version requirement
Sony states that the PS5’s current system-software version must be the same version or newer than the version installed when the backup was made. If the console is running older system software than the archive expects, update it before attempting restoration. Do not downgrade the system simply to match an older backup.
Account and console limits
Backups are associated with the PlayStation account used on the console. When the console was never signed in to PlayStation services, Sony says restoration is limited to the same console. Restoring to another PS5 requires the same account, so record which account was active when you made the archive and keep its sign-in details available.

How to make the backup safer before homebrew work
Keep two physically separate copies when possible
Leave the completed USB archive untouched and maintain the cloud copy separately. A single drive can be lost, damaged, reformatted, or accidentally overwritten. Cloud synchronization cannot replace the full USB archive, but it can preserve a recent individual save if the drive fails.
Capture the state you may need to reproduce
Write down the backup date, selected categories, console serial or identifying label, active PlayStation account, and the system-software version shown in the console’s system information. Photographing the confirmation screen and the drive label can make later identification easier without altering the archive.
Preserve power and avoid interruptions
Do not shut down the PS5, remove the USB drive, or disconnect power during backup creation. If the console restarts unexpectedly or never displays the completion confirmation, repeat the process with a known-compatible FAT32 or exFAT drive rather than trusting a partial archive.
Check the important saves before you start
Open the games whose progress matters most, confirm that their newest progress is present locally, then allow cloud synchronization to finish if you use PlayStation Plus. This catches a stale local save before it becomes the only version in either copy.
Troubleshooting common backup problems
The PS5 does not offer the drive in Back Up and Restore
- Confirm that the drive is formatted FAT32 or exFAT, not the format used for PS5 extended game storage.
- Connect it directly to the console and remove other USB storage devices temporarily.
- Try another USB port and, if necessary, another drive. Sony notes that not every USB device works.
- Check that the drive is not write-protected and has enough free space for the selected categories.
The backup stops or the console restarts without confirmation
- Do not assume the archive is valid without the Backup complete message and the following restart.
- Reconnect the drive, close applications, and repeat the backup.
- If the problem follows one drive, reformat a replacement drive as FAT32 or exFAT and try again. Reformat only after moving any files you need elsewhere.
- Keep the console on stable power and do not use a loose cable, hub, or adapter.
There is not enough space
Return to the category-selection screen and decide whether the archive needs games and apps or a large capture library. You can create a smaller archive containing saved data and settings, but do not remove a category without recognizing what that omission means for recovery. Alternatively, use a larger FAT32 or exFAT drive with enough free capacity.
A cloud save is older than the local save
Stop before downloading or allowing a sync that could overwrite the newer copy. Check the timestamps in the PS5 saved-data controls, open the game to verify which progress is current, and make the full USB backup first. Cloud storage is a second route, not proof that its copy is the latest.
Quick Recap
After the modification: recovery order
- Keep the original USB drive unchanged. Do not reformat it for extended storage or use it as ordinary media until you are certain recovery is no longer needed.
- Bring the PS5 to a compatible system-software version. The installed version must be the same as or newer than the version present when the backup was created.
- Sign in to the same PlayStation account. This is required when restoring to another console and is important for account-linked backup data.
- Use Settings > System > System Software > Back Up and Restore to begin the restore from the USB archive.
- Assume current console data will be erased. Copy or synchronize anything created after the backup before confirming the restore.
- Allow the restore and restarts to finish. Do not interrupt power or remove the drive during the operation.
- Re-enable Console Sharing and Offline Play afterward if you need that feature.
- Check saves, captures, settings, and trophies. Trophies depend on the separate synchronization step, while cloud saves may need their own verification.
Practical pre-homebrew checklist
- USB drive formatted FAT32 or exFAT, with enough free space.
- Drive connected directly to the PS5, not being used as extended game storage.
- Backup made through Settings > System > System Software > Back Up and Restore > Back Up Your PS5.
- Required categories selected: games and apps, saved data, screenshots and video clips, and settings.
- Backup complete confirmation displayed, followed by the console restart.
- Backup date, contents, system-software version, and account recorded.
- Drive disconnected and stored safely.
- PlayStation Plus PS5 and PS4 save synchronization completed where available.
- Trophies synchronized separately.
- A plan made for the possibility that restoration will erase all current console data.
