Make a new manual save at the last safe checkpoint, close the game normally, and verify that the copy has uploaded or been backed up before you change difficulty. If your platform allows it, keep a second, dated copy outside the active synchronization system. Do not start the hard-mode attempt while a cloud warning or conflict is unresolved.
Restoring is not an undo button. A downloaded Nintendo backup replaces the console save, and a PS5 USB restore can erase console data. Treat every restore as a deliberate replacement operation, not as a reversible experiment.

What a safe pre-hard-mode backup must contain
The useful backup is the exact save state you want to return to: after the last successful checkpoint, before enabling the unlockable difficulty. A backup made earlier may omit items or progress; one made later may already include the hard-mode change. The timestamp is therefore part of the evidence that your plan worked.

- Reach a safe point and make a fresh manual save. If the game has several slots, use a clearly named or otherwise identifiable slot rather than overwriting every slot.
- Exit to the title screen and then close the game through the platform’s normal quit command. Do not suspend or power off while the game is still writing data.
- Wait for the platform to report that the newest save has synchronized or backed up. A spinning icon, pending upload, warning banner, or conflict means the process is incomplete.
- Check the displayed local and remote timestamps. The remote copy should be at or after the manual save you just made.
- Make a second copy when the platform supports an independent copy, such as a dated local folder or a supported removable-media backup.
- Write down how you would restore the copy and whether that operation replaces one game’s save, all saves for a user, or an entire console image.
Cloud storage is not automatically an archive. On some services it is synchronization: a newer local file can replace the older cloud file, and a conflict can present two competing versions. A second copy that is not participating in the same synchronization is what protects you from that failure mode.

Check compatibility before relying on a service
Save backup support is decided per platform and, often, per game. Nintendo requires an active Nintendo Switch Online membership for Save Data Cloud and says that individual games may not support it. Steam Cloud also depends on what the developer selected for inclusion; it does not necessarily contain every file a game uses. Xbox menu labels and game support vary, so consult the game’s own support page. A platform icon or a subscription alone is not proof that your particular save is covered.
Some games keep unlock flags in a profile, on a server, or in a separate configuration file rather than in the ordinary campaign save. No universal rule determines whether rolling back the campaign will undo or preserve an unlockable hard-mode flag. Check the game’s documentation before assuming that a restored save will change that flag.
PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4
Upload a PS5 save to PlayStation Plus cloud storage
- Make the manual save, leave the game, and wait until it has closed.
- On the PS5 home screen open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings.
- Choose Saved Data (PS5), then choose Upload or Delete from Console Storage.
- Select Upload to Cloud Storage and choose the game and save data you just created.
- Wait for the upload to finish, then verify the cloud entry’s time against the time of your manual save.
Automatic sync can be enabled for PS5 games. For PS4 games running on a PS5, the corresponding auto-upload setting is separate. Check the game’s synchronization status rather than assuming that an automatic job has completed. If the status is pending or shows an error, leave the hard-mode attempt paused until the condition is resolved.
Use a full PS5 USB backup when you need a separate copy
Sony documents a console-level USB backup at Settings > System > System Software > Back Up and Restore > Back Up Your PS5. This backup includes saved data along with the other categories selected by the console’s backup process. It is a whole-console image, not a convenient way to pull out one PS5 save file. Do not turn off the console while backing up or restoring; an interruption can cause loss or corruption.
Use a USB drive with enough free space, connect it before opening the backup menu, and let the process reach its completion screen. Label the drive and record the date so you can distinguish the pre-attempt image from later backups. Because the restore scope is broad, use this method only when you understand that it can replace data on the console, not just the one game.

PS4 saves and the PS5 transfer limitation
PS4 saved data can be copied to a USB drive as an individual-save workflow. PS5 saved data cannot be copied from the console to USB that way; Sony’s transfer documentation distinguishes the PS4 file-copy process from the full PS5 backup process. For a PS4 game, you can therefore keep both a PlayStation Plus cloud copy and a separately dated USB copy when the game and account support them. Keep the two copies from the same completed manual save, and verify their dates before changing difficulty.

Downloading a cloud save places that version back on the console for the selected game. A full PS5 USB restore is broader and can erase console data. Sony’s warning about interruption applies in both directions: never power down during a backup or restore. If your objective is to recover one pre-hard-mode state, prefer the narrowest restore operation available and confirm the target game and user before accepting the replacement prompt.

Back up Save Data Cloud
- Finish the manual save and close the software normally.
- On the HOME Menu, highlight the game icon and press + or –.
- Choose Save Data Cloud, select the user whose save you made, and choose Back Up Save Data.
- Wait for the backup to complete. If automatic backup is enabled, the console can back up after software closes or while it sleeps, but still check the result rather than relying on timing.
- Compare the displayed local and cloud timestamps. The cloud time must be at or after the manual save.
An active Nintendo Switch Online membership is required, and not every game supports Save Data Cloud. Verify support for the specific title before treating the cloud entry as your safety copy.
Understand the replacement warning
Downloading a backup replaces the existing console save for that game. Nintendo states: “Save data downloaded from the backup will replace the existing save data on the console for that game.” The overwritten data cannot be recovered. If you played more after making the backup, that newer progress will be lost when you download the older copy. Before confirming a download, compare the timestamps and make a new backup of any progress you might want to keep.

Because the service is designed to synchronize a cloud version with the console, it is not a permanent history of every prior save. The safest workflow is to stop playing after the verified pre-attempt backup until you decide whether the hard-mode run is successful.

Let Steam finish synchronization
- Make the in-game manual save and quit to the desktop through the game’s normal exit path.
- Open Steam and wait for the game’s status to show that cloud synchronization has finished. Do not launch the hard-mode attempt while a cloud icon is spinning or an error is displayed.
- If Steam presents a conflict, stop and compare the local and cloud timestamps. Choose deliberately; do not click through simply to launch the game.
- After synchronization succeeds, close Steam or at least stop the game from running before making your independent copy.
Steam Cloud stores only the files the developer selected. A configuration file, profile, screenshot, or locally stored mod data may be outside the synchronized set. Steam lists common local cloud locations as:

~/.local/share/Steam/userdata
Inside the userdata directory, accounts and app identifiers are represented by numeric folders. Copy the relevant game’s folder to a separate, dated location such as an external drive. Do not move or delete the live folder; copy it, and record which Steam account, game, and date it represents.
Resolve a Steam Cloud conflict safely
A conflict means Steam has two versions with different change histories. Compare their times and, if possible, inspect the files in a temporary copy. Select the version that contains the verified pre-hard-mode save, then allow Steam to complete the resulting synchronization. Steam warns that ignoring the message and selecting “play game” can create a conflict between cloud and local files, resulting in lost data or progress.
If you cannot determine which version is the pre-attempt save, preserve both by copying the local folder before making a choice. Once Steam has synchronized one version, the other may no longer be available through the service’s normal restore flow.

Restore a Steam save without sacrificing newer progress
- Exit the game and Steam completely.
- Copy the current
userdatagame folder to a new dated location. This is your protection for any progress made after the original backup. - Replace the live game’s files with the dated pre-attempt copy, keeping the same folder structure.
- Start Steam while offline if necessary to prevent an immediate cloud download from replacing the files you just restored.
- Launch the game, verify that the expected pre-hard-mode state is present, then decide which version should become the authoritative cloud copy.
The exact app folder and file names vary by game. If the game has its own profile directory outside userdata, include that directory in your independent backup after checking the developer’s support instructions.
Xbox Series X|S
On Xbox, the platform path is the Xbox service cloud. Capcom’s current all-platform support guidance identifies uploading save data to the Xbox service cloud as the backup route for Xbox Series X|S. Menu names and game behavior can vary, so verify the game’s support page and wait for the console to finish syncing after you close the game.
There is no universal Xbox procedure that guarantees coverage for every title. Treat a sync indicator, warning, or pending upload as a stop condition. If the game offers its own export or account backup, follow that game’s instructions as a separate copy rather than assuming the platform cloud contains every setting.

Run this verification checklist immediately before hard mode
- The save was made after the last safe checkpoint and the game closed normally.
- The cloud or removable-media copy has a timestamp at or after that save.
- No Steam sync error, cloud conflict, or platform warning is visible.
- The game supports the selected cloud service, and any required subscription is active.
- You have identified the exact restore command and know whether it replaces one save or an entire console image.
- If you made an independent copy, it is in a separate location and is not being overwritten by the same synchronization process.
- You know whether the game’s hard-mode unlock is stored in the campaign save, profile, or an online service; if you do not know, check the game’s own support documentation first.
Only after every item is true should you enable the unlockable difficulty. Keep the backup’s date and the chosen save slot in a note so that a later restore decision is based on evidence rather than memory.
How to restore after a failed attempt
When the backup is a synchronized cloud save
Close the game, confirm that no newer progress still needs to be kept, and use the platform’s download or restore command for the selected title. Read the replacement warning and verify the user, game, and timestamp before accepting. Do not continue playing while the old version is still downloading or while a conflict is unresolved.

When the backup is an independent file or USB copy
Stop the game and preserve the current state first. Copy the newer files to a separate dated folder, then restore the pre-attempt files to their original location or use the platform’s documented import command. Launch only after the copy operation completes. This two-stage process lets you return to the newer attempt if you discover that the hard-mode flag was stored separately.
When the backup is a full PS5 console image
Use the PS5 restore menu only after confirming that the image contains the intended pre-attempt date. A full restore can remove newer console data, so export or otherwise preserve anything created after the backup that you may want later. Keep the console powered throughout the process; Sony warns that an interruption can cause loss or corruption.
Troubleshoot the common failure points
The cloud timestamp is older than the manual save
Do not start hard mode. Reopen the game, make the manual save again, close it normally, and wait for the upload. If the timestamp still does not advance, check account connectivity, available storage, and whether the title supports the service before trying again.
A conflict appears after you launch the game
Exit without choosing a version. Record both timestamps, preserve the local files where the platform permits, and select the copy that is demonstrably the pre-attempt state. On Steam, an independent copy of the relevant userdata folder gives you a way to inspect both versions before committing.
The game has no cloud support
Use the game’s own export, profile, or local-save instructions if available. On PC, copy every relevant save and profile directory, not only the folder a launcher happens to synchronize. On consoles, a supported USB or console-image method may be the only independent option, and its restore scope must be understood before use.
The restored save loads, but the hard-mode unlock is unchanged
That result can be correct if the unlock flag lives in a profile or online account rather than the campaign save. Do not repeatedly overwrite saves while guessing. Check the title’s support documentation and preserve the current files before testing another restore.
Bottom line for a no-regrets attempt
The dependable pattern is simple: manual save, clean exit, verified upload, independent second copy where possible, then hard mode. A backup without a confirmed timestamp is only an assumption, and a restore without a preserved newer copy can turn a failed challenge into permanent progress loss.
