Back up your Ubisoft Connect PC saves by disabling cloud synchronization, closing the game and launcher, and copying the complete game folder from C:Program Files (x86)UbisoftUbisoft Game Launchersavegames<account-ID> to a USB flash drive. Keep the original files untouched, make a second copy in another location, and record the game, platform and Ubisoft account used. This preserves a restorable PC copy, but it does not convert a save for a console, another edition or every game.
Why make a local backup before a shutdown?
Ubisoft can retire online services for a particular game and platform without making every part of the purchased game unusable. In its 27 October 2023 notice, Ubisoft said the listed services would be decommissioned on 25 January 2024, that the change would “only affect certain online functionalities,” and that purchased games would remain playable. That wording is title-specific, not a guarantee for every Ubisoft game.

A local copy protects the files that are already on your Windows PC if cloud saves become unavailable, are disabled, or later synchronize the wrong version. It also gives you a recovery option after a corrupted installation or an accidental overwrite. The copy is valuable only if it is independent of the Ubisoft account and service that may be going offline.
Do not wait until the announced retirement date. A final save made while the game still works, followed by a verified archive, is safer than trying to recover files after a launcher change or account problem. Make the archive while you can still start the title, reach its save menu and confirm that the intended profile is loaded.

What Ubisoft’s shutdown notices do—and do not—promise
Decommissioning is specific to a title and platform
Ubisoft’s 27 October 2023 announcement named these services for decommissioning on 25 January 2024:
| Game | Platform in the notice | Announced date |
|---|---|---|
| Assassin’s Creed II | Xbox 360 | 25 January 2024 |
| Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood | Mac | 25 January 2024 |
| Assassin’s Creed Liberation HD | PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 | 25 January 2024 |
| Assassin’s Creed Revelations | PC | 25 January 2024 |
| Ghost Recon Future Soldier | PC | 25 January 2024 |
| Heroes of Might and Magic VI | PC | 25 January 2024 |
| NCIS | PC | 25 January 2024 |
| R.U.S.E. | PC | 25 January 2024 |
| Splinter Cell: Conviction | Xbox 360 | 25 January 2024 |
| Trials Evolution | PC | 25 January 2024 |
This is historical information, not a current shutdown list. Check Ubisoft’s latest notice for your own title and platform. An online feature may disappear while offline play, installed content or purchased access continues; the exact result depends on the game.
A notice about multiplayer, authentication or another service does not automatically explain what happens to campaign saves. Read the title-specific wording and note whether it refers to PC, Mac, PlayStation, Xbox or another edition. A PC notice cannot be assumed to apply to a console release of the same name.
What you need
- A Windows PC with the game installed and enough free space for the save folder.
- Access to the Ubisoft account used to create the saves.
- A USB flash drive or other removable drive with more free space than the folder you will copy.
- A second destination, such as another drive or a cloud-storage account, if the progress is difficult to replace.
- A note containing the title, platform or store edition, Ubisoft account, backup date and original path.
The USB drive does not need to contain the game installation; it only needs room for the complete save folder and any duplicate archive. Check the folder size in Windows before copying so the destination has headroom. Avoid using the only removable drive that already reports errors or disconnects unexpectedly.
A USB drive is useful because it is physically separate from the PC and does not require Ubisoft’s servers to read the copy. A second cloud copy can add protection against loss or drive failure, but it should not be the only copy: access still depends on that storage account and provider.
Where Ubisoft Connect stores PC saves
The documented default location is:
C:Program Files (x86)UbisoftUbisoft Game Launchersavegames<account-ID>
Inside savegames, open the folder named for your Ubisoft account ID. The game’s save data is in a numeric subfolder below that account folder. The numeric folder is not a friendly game name, so identify it by checking its contents and modified dates while the game is closed. The exact layout can differ by title; some games also use additional files or a separate location. Use the game-specific Ubisoft support instructions if the expected folder is absent.

To reach the parent directory in Windows, open File Explorer, paste C:Program Files (x86)UbisoftUbisoft Game Launchersavegames into the address bar, and press Enter. If Ubisoft Connect was installed in a different Windows location, search for the savegames folder under the Ubisoft Game Launcher directory rather than assuming the default path.

Do not infer the account ID from a display name alone. Record which Ubisoft account is signed in when you make the final save, because restoring a folder beneath a different account-ID directory may leave the game unable to see it. If more than one account folder exists, preserve the relevant one and do not delete the others while you investigate.
Step-by-step: create a verified USB backup
1. Finish one final in-game save
- Start the game normally.
- Load the profile or campaign you want to preserve.
- Save through the game’s own menu or wait for its confirmed autosave.
- Exit to the desktop and make sure the game process has closed. Do not copy files while it is still writing.
Use the most recent save you actually want to preserve. If the game has several profiles or slots, the complete game folder is safer than selecting individual files. If you need more than one point in time, make separate dated archives after each confirmed save rather than replacing the first archive.
2. Disable cloud-save synchronization
In Ubisoft Connect PC, turn off cloud-save synchronization using Ubisoft’s current support procedure before you handle the local files. The setting’s wording and placement can change between client versions, so follow the label shown in your installation. Disabling synchronization prevents a later launch from replacing the local version you intend to archive, and it avoids a conflict between an old cloud copy and your final local save.
Leave synchronization disabled while you copy and, if necessary, restore files. Do not re-enable it merely to test whether the backup exists; test the copied files only after the archive itself has been checked. If the client displays a choice between local and cloud data, do not choose casually: stop and identify which version contains the progress you intend to preserve.
3. Close Ubisoft Connect completely
Exit the game first, then close Ubisoft Connect PC. If the launcher remains running in the notification area, use its exit command. A closed launcher reduces the chance that a background sync or file lock changes the folder during the copy. Wait until the launcher has disappeared from the notification area before opening the save directory.
4. Find the account and game folders
- Open the default
savegamespath in File Explorer. - Open the folder matching your Ubisoft account ID.
- Identify the numeric subfolder belonging to the game you just saved.
- If several folders are plausible, compare their modified dates and inspect them without editing anything.
Do not rename numeric folders, change file extensions or combine files from different games. Save formats are title-specific. A fresh save followed by a complete exit is a useful identification test: the folder whose contents or modified date changes is the likely folder, but keep every original candidate until the archive is verified.
5. Copy the complete folder to removable storage
- Connect the USB flash drive and create a clearly named folder such as
Ubisoft_Backup_2026-10-19, using the actual date of your copy. - Copy the entire relevant game folder, not just the newest-looking file, into that dated folder. If you want maximum context, copy the whole account-ID folder and retain its original hierarchy.
- Use Copy and Paste, never Cut and Paste. The original must remain in place until verification is complete.
- Wait for Windows to finish copying before disconnecting the drive.
Preserving the hierarchy matters: a future restore may require the numeric game folder in the account-ID folder rather than a loose collection of files. Keep the dated folder name distinct from other backups so you can tell which save point it contains. Do not let a file-synchronization utility merge it with a different game folder unless you have confirmed the resulting hierarchy.

For a high-value campaign, duplicate the dated archive to another physical drive or a cloud-storage account. Keep the USB copy and the second copy in separate locations. A cloud copy is a second layer, not a substitute for an offline copy, because it remains tied to the provider and account credentials.

The second copy should be made after the first has completed, not by moving the only archive. If you use cloud storage, upload the dated folder as a normal file copy and retain the USB version. The goal is two independently readable copies, not two synchronized locations that could propagate an accidental deletion.
7. Verify before disconnecting the drive
- Open the copied archive and confirm that the expected folders and files are present.
- Compare the source and copy for matching file names and plausible file sizes.
- Check that the newest modified dates correspond to the final save you made.
- Confirm that the copy opens without Windows reporting an incomplete transfer.
- Ensure the account-ID and numeric game-folder hierarchy is intact.
- Eject the USB drive safely only after the copy and verification finish.
Do not edit, rename or encrypt the files during verification unless the game’s own support instructions explicitly require it. Such changes can make an otherwise valid save unusable. Keep the original local folder unchanged until you have a verified archive and, ideally, a second copy.
Backup choices compared
| Method | Independence from Ubisoft services | Restore and portability | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Original local folder | Available on the PC, but vulnerable to disk failure, reinstallations and accidental overwrites. | Fastest restore on the same Windows installation. | A cloud sync or reinstall can replace or remove it. |
| USB flash-drive copy | Independent of Ubisoft account and service availability while stored offline. | Easy to carry to another Windows PC; preserves the original file format. | The drive can be lost, damaged or disconnected during a copy. |
| Second cloud-storage copy | Independent of Ubisoft, but dependent on the storage provider and your account access. | Convenient for downloading to another PC. | Account loss, provider outages or sync conflicts can affect access. |
| Copying selected individual files | Independent once copied. | Less reliable because some games need companion files or a specific folder hierarchy. | Missing metadata can make the save invisible or unreadable. |
For most players, the safest practical arrangement is the untouched local folder plus a complete USB copy and, for irreplaceable progress, a second copy elsewhere. The arrangement preserves the original format, reduces dependence on Ubisoft availability and leaves you a fallback if one location is lost.

Ubisoft’s restore guidance supports using a backup copy to return to an earlier PC save. Restore only after identifying the same game, edition and Ubisoft account for which the archive was created.
- Close the game and Ubisoft Connect PC.
- Keep cloud-save synchronization disabled so the launcher cannot replace the restored files.
- Make a temporary copy of the current local folder before changing it. This gives you a way back if the restored version is not the one you wanted.
- Place the backed-up game folder back into the matching account-ID directory, preserving the original numeric folder and hierarchy. Follow the game-specific Ubisoft instructions if they specify a different location.
- Launch the game and test the restored profile or save slot.
- Only after confirming the intended progress should you consider re-enabling cloud synchronization. If the cloud copy is older, enabling it may create a conflict or overwrite the local version.
If the game does not recognize the restored save, close it again and do not keep experimenting on the only copy. Recheck the account-ID folder, numeric game folder, edition and support instructions, then restore from a duplicate archive. Keep the failed attempt separate until you know which version is valid.
Testing on another Windows PC can confirm that the archive is readable, but it does not prove that every title supports moving saves between installations. Use the same account and edition where possible, and never replace a working destination save without first making a temporary copy.
Why a PC backup cannot be treated as a universal transfer
The documented restore process concerns PC saves. A copied Windows folder is not a cross-platform conversion for PlayStation, Xbox, Mac or a different release sold through another store. File locations and formats can vary by title, and a console may not expose the same files at all.

Before attempting a transfer, preserve the original archive and consult the Ubisoft support page for the exact game and target platform. Do not overwrite a working save on another installation until you have confirmed that the game supports that transfer. A save from one store edition may also require a different path or account association than a save from another edition.

Common problems and fixes
The default folder is missing
Confirm that Ubisoft Connect and the game are installed on the expected Windows drive. Search File Explorer for savegames beneath the Ubisoft Game Launcher directory. If the game has its own support-documented save path, use that path instead of creating a new folder manually. Do not create an empty account-ID folder and assume the game will populate it after services are retired.
Several numeric folders look identical
Make a fresh save in the target game, exit fully, and compare modified dates again. The folder that changes is the likely game directory. Keep every original folder until you have identified the correct one; do not delete candidates to simplify the view.
Windows says a file is in use
Close the game and Ubisoft Connect, including the launcher in the notification area. Wait briefly and retry. If the file remains locked, restart Windows and copy before launching the game again. A lock is a reason to stop and close software, not to force-delete or rename the file.

Check that cloud synchronization is still disabled, that the files are under the correct account-ID and numeric folders, and that you restored the same title and edition. Compare the archive’s modified dates with the progress you expect. Use the game-specific support instructions rather than renaming files.
The USB copy is incomplete
Copy the folder again to a different destination, compare file counts and sizes, and keep both attempts until one is verified. If the drive reports errors, stop using it for the only archive and make a new copy on another drive. Do not erase the source folder to free space until a complete replacement archive exists.
A cloud prompt asks which version to keep
Leave synchronization disabled and cancel the prompt if possible. First compare the local folder with the dated archive and determine which contains the intended progress. Re-enabling sync before that decision can cause the older cloud version to overwrite the local files.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Account termination is a separate risk
A local folder does not override Ubisoft account terms. Ubisoft Terms of Use 5.0, section 8.3, state: “In the event of termination of your Account, you will no longer have access to your Account and you will lose all your save files and in-game progression related to the Services.” Keep your account in good standing and retain the account details that identify the archive. The quotation describes Ubisoft’s contractual position; it is not a promise that a local file will be usable without the game or account that created it.

That is another reason to document the account, title, platform and edition when you make the backup. A USB copy can preserve bytes, but it cannot restore account access, a removed game license or a service feature that the title requires for operation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where are Ubisoft Connect save files stored on a Windows PC?
The documented default is C:Program Files (x86)UbisoftUbisoft Game Launchersavegames<account-ID>. The game data is in a numeric subfolder under the account-ID folder. A title may use an additional location, so check its Ubisoft support page if that path is empty.
Can I copy Ubisoft saves to a USB flash drive?
Yes. Close the game and launcher, disable cloud synchronization, and copy the complete relevant game folder to a dated folder on the USB drive. Copy rather than move, keep the original until verification, and make another copy for irreplaceable progress.
Should cloud synchronization be on or off while I copy?
Turn it off before handling the local files and leave it off during copying and restoration. This reduces the chance that an older cloud version overwrites the local save or creates a conflict.
Will my purchased Ubisoft game work after online services are decommissioned?
It depends on the title and platform. Ubisoft’s 27 October 2023 notice said the listed services would affect only certain online functionalities and that purchased games would remain playable, but that statement is not a guarantee for every game. Check the current notice for your title.
Can I use a PC save on PlayStation, Xbox or Mac?
Not automatically. A copied Windows folder is not a universal cross-platform conversion, and file formats and locations vary by title. Preserve the original and consult the game-specific Ubisoft guidance before attempting a transfer.
What should I do if the restored save is not recognized?
Close the game, keep cloud sync disabled, and recheck the Ubisoft account, numeric game folder, title, edition and folder hierarchy. Restore from a duplicate archive rather than repeatedly changing the only copy, and follow the game-specific support instructions.
Do I need to back up the whole account-ID folder?
Copying the complete game folder is the minimum safer choice because some titles need companion files and their original hierarchy. Copying the entire account-ID folder preserves maximum context when you are unsure which numeric folder belongs to the game.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat information should I write on the backup?
Record the game title, platform or store edition, Ubisoft account, backup date and original path. This documentation helps you select the correct archive if several numeric folders or dated copies exist.
The Bottom Line
For a Ubisoft Connect PC save, finish a final save, disable cloud synchronization, close the launcher, and copy the complete numeric game folder under your account-ID directory to a dated USB folder. Verify it, keep a second independent copy, and preserve the original. Shutdown effects and restore compatibility are title- and platform-specific, so a PC archive is protection for that installation—not a universal console transfer.
