Sync your save to Xbox cloud storage before changing consoles, then sign in with the same Xbox account and launch the game on the destination console. The digital game entitlement and the save are separate: claiming digital access does not back up or restore progress.

Xbox’s backward compatibility guidance says saves can transfer through the cloud between Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. The availability of features varies by game, so this is not a guarantee for every title, generation, or edition.

Retrieve the save on the destination console

Sign in with the account that created the save.

Launch the game and allow it to sync. The game must support the relevant save transfer for the console generations and editions involved.

Keep the game license separate from the save
Xbox’s August 26, 2026 disc-to-digital announcement says most Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc-based games support claiming a digital entitlement by inserting a supported disc and launching the game. The physical disc continues to work as before. The announcement describes access to the game, not a save export, backup, or restore; sync the save separately.

You are moving between different generations or editions: verify the specific game’s instructions. Xbox’s cited cloud-transfer statement covers saves created on Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S and transferred within those console families.

You are playing an Xbox 360 game through backward compatibility: check game-specific instructions rather than assuming the Xbox One and Series X|S save workflow applies.

The save or settings do not appear on another console: title implementation matters. Microsoft’s GDK documentation advises developers to validate access to saves and related settings on a second console of the same platform generation: Microsoft Learn: XR-052 User State and Title-Save Location, Roaming and Dependencies.
