What Xbox backs up automatically—and what it does not
Xbox uses different systems for game progress and recorded media. A supported game’s save data is stored locally first and synchronized with the cloud. That synchronization is designed to make progress available on another console when you use the same Microsoft/Xbox account. It is not the same process as exporting a screenshot or a video clip.

This split explains why a new console can restore your game progress while your old screenshots are absent: saves synchronize as part of the game-save flow, whereas captures require an export or backup action in the Captures app.

1. Put the old console online
Connect the console to the internet and sign in with the account that owns the game progress. Leave the game and the console enough time to complete its synchronization. Do not switch consoles immediately after a long offline session, a major achievement, or a large amount of progress.

2. Close the game normally
Exit the game from its menu or return to the Xbox dashboard before changing devices. Closing the game gives the system an opportunity to finish writing the latest local save. If the title displays its own “saving” indicator, wait for that indicator to clear first.
3. Let the save synchronize
When the console is connected, Xbox compares the newer local data with the cloud copy. Depending on which copy changed, it can upload the local save, download the cloud save, or ask you to resolve a conflict. Keep the console powered on until that process has completed.
4. Sign in on the replacement console
Use the same Microsoft/Xbox account on the replacement console, install the game, and start it while connected to the internet. The save-sync system should retrieve the cloud copy associated with that account and title. If the game has multiple editions or profiles, verify that you selected the same edition and in-game profile used on the old console.
5. Check the restored progress in the game
Load the relevant save and confirm the expected character, campaign chapter, world, or settings before deleting anything from the old console. This check catches account, edition, and profile mistakes while the original local copy may still be available.

How Xbox game-save synchronization works
Microsoft describes Game Saves as local-first storage with cloud synchronization. Your console can continue to use local data while it is offline. Those changes remain local until an internet connection is restored, at which point Xbox attempts to reconcile the local and cloud versions.
The cloud is therefore a synchronized copy for supported titles, not a manual archive that you browse and download as individual files. You generally do not need to copy save files to a USB drive for a normal console-to-console move. The safest practice is to keep the original console intact until the replacement console has loaded and verified the desired progress.
When a sync-conflict message appears
A conflict means Xbox found meaningful changes in both places. For example, you may have played offline on the old console while the replacement console still contains an older cloud state, or you may have used two consoles without allowing either one to finish syncing.
- Read the timestamps, device labels, and progress descriptions shown by the conflict dialog.
- Identify which copy contains the session, chapter, inventory, or world state you actually want.
- Select the local or cloud option that matches that state.
- Wait for the selected copy to finish syncing before launching the game again.
Do not assume that the newest device is automatically correct. A newer timestamp can represent a short session, an accidental overwrite, or a state created before the progress you intended to keep.

If you usually play offline
Offline play is supported, but it changes the timing of your backup. Local progress remains on the console until connectivity returns. Before moving the game to another device, reconnect the old console, launch the title if necessary, and allow the pending upload to complete. A replacement console cannot retrieve progress that never reached the cloud.
Back up Xbox screenshots and clips in the Captures app
Open the correct Xbox screen
On the console, follow this exact path:
- Press the Xbox button.
- Open My games & apps.
- Select See all.
- Open Apps.
- Launch Captures.
The Captures app is where Xbox provides tools to select, manage, move, and upload screenshots and video clips. If you have a large library, work through it in batches rather than waiting until the deletion deadline is close.
Upload selected or multiple captures to OneDrive
From Captures, select the screenshots or clips you want to retain and use the backup or management command to upload them to OneDrive. The app supports bulk upload, so you can select several items instead of opening each capture individually. Keep the console online until the transfer status shows completion.
OneDrive is the cloud destination specifically highlighted by Xbox for capture backups. It is useful when you want access from a computer or phone, a second copy outside the console, and the option to enable automatic backup for future captures. The available storage and any account limits are determined by your OneDrive account; the Xbox announcement does not establish a particular capacity or price.

Move captures to an external storage device
Connect a compatible USB external storage device to the Xbox and use the Captures app’s move or backup controls to copy the selected media. This creates a physical copy that can remain offline, which is useful for an archive, editing workstation, or household where cloud storage is not the preferred destination.
Xbox names an external storage device as an official capture-backup destination, but the cited Xbox documentation does not specify a current retail model, filesystem requirement, minimum capacity, or universal compatibility list. Before buying, verify the device listing against your exact console and the number and resolution of clips you intend to keep. A drive that works for one Xbox storage task is not automatically proven for every capture workflow.
Understand the 90-day Xbox-network deletion policy
Xbox announced on September 27, 2023 that “Game captures stored on the Xbox network will be deleted after 90 days.” Jonathan Hildebrandt, Principal Group Product Manager for Xbox Experiences, included that statement in the Xbox Wire announcement about the simplified capture-backup experience. Treat the Xbox network as a temporary sharing and access location, not as your permanent archive. Upload or move important media before the 90-day window expires.

You can use both: send routine captures to OneDrive, then periodically copy especially valuable clips to a separate physical drive. Keeping two destinations reduces the chance that an account issue, accidental deletion, or damaged drive becomes the only failure point.

Turn on automatic OneDrive backup for future captures
Xbox’s capture-management experience offers automatic OneDrive backup for new captures. The exact wording can change with console software updates, so open the Captures app and look for its backup or automatic-upload setting rather than relying on an older dashboard screenshot. Choose OneDrive as the destination, complete the account sign-in if prompted, and confirm the setting is enabled by checking the next test capture in OneDrive.
There is a separate Microsoft Support article titled “Save screenshots to OneDrive automatically.” That article concerns OneDrive’s general screenshot-folder behavior and states that the old general “Save screenshots to OneDrive” setting is no longer available; it advises ensuring that the Pictures folder is included in OneDrive for that workflow. This does not replace the Xbox capture setting. Configure Xbox captures from the Captures app, then use the Pictures-folder guidance only for the separate Windows or general OneDrive screenshot process.
Troubleshoot missing saves and captures
The replacement console shows an old save
- Confirm that both consoles use the same Microsoft/Xbox account.
- Reconnect the old console and start the game so its latest local data can upload.
- On the replacement console, close and relaunch the game while online to trigger synchronization again.
- If a conflict dialog appears, compare the displayed progress and select the intended copy rather than automatically choosing the newest device.
The game never finishes syncing
- Check that the console is actually online and that other network services work.
- Close the game and restart the console, then retry while connected.
- Avoid repeatedly launching the game on two consoles during the same unresolved sync; that can create additional divergent local states.
- Keep the old console’s local data until you have opened the expected save on the replacement device.
A screenshot or clip is missing from Captures
- Open the Captures app rather than looking only in the game’s menus.
- Check whether the item was saved locally, uploaded already, or moved to external storage.
- Review the capture date and filter options; a large library can make an item appear missing when it is outside the current view.
- If it was stored only on the Xbox network, copy it out promptly because network-hosted captures are not permanent.
A OneDrive upload is not visible
- Leave the console online until the Captures app reports that the upload has completed.
- Check the OneDrive account and folder associated with the Xbox sign-in.
- Verify that the account has available storage and that you are viewing the same account on your computer or phone.
- Make a small test capture and confirm that the automatic-backup setting is still enabled.
The USB device does not appear as a destination
- Reconnect the drive directly to the console and reopen Captures.
- Check the console’s storage-management screen for an acknowledgement of the device.
- Verify the drive’s compatibility and capacity with the console documentation and current product listing; the cited Xbox capture announcement does not define a universal filesystem or model list.
- If the drive contains important files, do not initialize or reformat it until you have confirmed what the Xbox prompt will erase.
A practical backup routine
- After an important game session, close the game while the console is online.
- Wait for save synchronization before turning off the console or switching devices.
- In Captures, upload memorable screenshots and clips to OneDrive or move them to an external storage device.
- Use automatic OneDrive backup for routine future captures if cloud storage suits your workflow.
- Keep a second copy of irreplaceable recordings on a separate physical device.
- Before deleting or resetting an old console, open a representative save on the new console and open several backed-up captures from their destination.
What this backup method cannot guarantee
Cloud synchronization covers supported game-save systems, not every file a game might store outside its normal save data. Game settings, local screenshots, clips, mods, and title-specific data can follow different rules. A publisher can also change how a particular game stores profiles or online progression. If a title provides its own account or cross-progression system, follow that title’s instructions in addition to the Xbox save-sync process.
Likewise, a OneDrive upload or USB copy protects the media file you exported; it does not preserve the Xbox-network listing, comments, trims, or other presentation details exactly as they appeared in the Captures app. Open a few exported files on the destination device so you know the actual video and image data is usable.
