The most reliable way to counter Cazador’s Mist Form is magical sunlight. Larian confirms that Cazador cannot enter or remain in Mist Form while standing in magical sunlight, including sunlight created by Daylight. Keep that effect active, manage the other enemies and ritual-bound spawn, and be ready to free Astarion if he is caught in the opening sequence.

Bring a character who can cast Daylight if you have that option. Larian’s Patch 3 notes specifically confirm that magical sunlight prevents Cazador from turning into or remaining in Mist Form. Account for your difficulty
Larian’s Patch 4 notes say Cazador has Legendary Resistance on Tactician, but not on Explorer or Balanced. If he becomes Ascended, he gains permanent Legendary Resistance. Plan for control effects to be less dependable on Tactician and against Ascended Cazador.
Decide where to place Astarion
According to GameSpot’s walkthrough, Astarion may be pulled into the ritual if he is within detection range when combat begins. The guide suggests leaving him outside that range during the opening; treat this as walkthrough positioning advice, since the exact trigger may vary with circumstances or game version.

How to handle Cazador during the fight
Keep the sunlight on him
Use Daylight or another source of magical sunlight to cover the area where Cazador is fighting. The confirmed benefit is that he cannot turn into or stay in Mist Form while in that sunlight. GameSpot also reports that sunlight damages him and penalizes his attacks; those additional effects are walkthrough-reported, not the specific mechanic established in Larian’s Patch 3 notes.
Control the surrounding enemies and ritual
Do not focus every action on Cazador while the other enemies and ritual-bound spawn remain active. GameSpot recommends area effects against grouped threats and describes the spawn as helping empower Cazador. Larian’s Patch 7 notes confirm that Ritual Drain is applied correctly to Asta, Yousen, and Violet, underscoring that the ritual mechanics are part of the encounter. Use area attacks when enemies cluster, while maintaining pressure on Cazador under magical sunlight.

Free Astarion if he is captured
If Astarion is pulled into the ritual, GameSpot’s reported approach is to use Help on his ritual circle to free him. The walkthrough does not establish an action-economy guarantee, so be prepared to adapt to the turn order and current combat state.

Patch notes worth knowing
- Patch 4 documents the difficulty-dependent Legendary Resistance rules and the permanent resistance for Ascended Cazador.
- Patch 6 records a fix for attacking Cazador without dialogue when Astarion was present as a zombie.
- Patch 7 addresses Ritual Drain behavior and fixes an extra bonus-action exploit involving repeatedly stepping on and off the pentagram. Do not rely on that exploit as a combat tactic.
