To beat standard Gladius in the Tricephalos Expedition, take holy damage if the changing loot offers it, dodge attacks and punish their recovery, and keep the three wolves from piling onto one teammate when Gladius splits. Stay alert for the purple-aura grab, then watch for an explosive sword slam and a ground-level fire wave after the wolves reunite. These tactics are for the standard encounter; Everdark Gladius is a more dangerous variant with a different opening.
Prepare for the standard Tricephalos fight
Nightreign sends players through Limveld on a three-day expedition as distinct Nightfarers, gathering loot before facing powerful bosses. Bandai Namco notes that loot, enemies, and bosses shift between sessions, so holy gear is an opportunity rather than a guaranteed drop. Its official Nightreign Gameplay Guide describes bosses emerging when night falls.

Windows Central’s Gladius guide identifies holy damage as the boss’s weakness. If a camp marked with a holy icon appears, defeating its miniboss may give you a chance at a holy weapon. Do not plan a build around finding one; expedition loot varies.
- Choose a Nightfarer you can keep attacking with. Windows Central suggests melee-focused characters such as Wylder, Guardian, Raider, and Executor can maintain damage more easily. Ranged characters are still viable, but should keep track of the sword and fire attacks while looking for safe openings.
- Use defenses you actually have. The guide describes Gladius’s attacks as mostly physical, with fire damage as well. Improve those defenses where your run allows, and save healing for moments when you can use it safely.
- Stay close enough to read the opening moves. Several of the bite and headbutt attacks are easier to evade and punish from the side or near the legs. Close positioning is not a reason to ignore the grab tell.
How to handle Gladius’s opening attacks
Windows Central’s move-by-move advice is to dodge through or past attacks, then use their recovery to deal damage. Do not mash attacks through a telegraph: the purple-aura grab is especially dangerous.

What changes when Gladius splits
Windows Central reports that the standard fight’s second phase begins at about 70% health. That is an approximate observation from the guide, not an official or guaranteed trigger point. Gladius becomes three fireballs, which turn into separate one-headed wolves. Only the wolf carrying the sword uses sword attacks.
Keep the three wolves from focusing one player
In a coordinated party, teammates can draw one wolf each and maintain room to dodge. If multiple wolves converge on one player, that player should prioritize avoiding damage until teammates can help rather than trying to trade hits. The guide warns this phase can be especially difficult solo because all three wolves may attack one person; it is a difficulty, not an impossibility.

React to the coordinated attack
The wolves alternate between passive and aggressive behavior. When the sword-bearing wolf roars, all three gain red eyes and attack together. Dodge the sequence, then retaliate during the opening; successful attacks can build stagger and create a critical-hit opportunity.

- Leap into an explosive sword slam: Move behind Gladius during its leap or dodge through the explosion as the sword lands.
- Ground slam and fire wave: Roll forward through the ground-level wave rather than retreating along its path.
The guide estimates that Gladius stays in its combined form for about 45 seconds before splitting again. Treat that as a rough cue, not a fixed timer: respond to the boss’s actions rather than relying on a countdown.
Standard Gladius is not Everdark Gladius
Do not apply the standard fight’s opening sequence to the enhanced variant. PC Gamer’s Everdark Gladius guide, published August 21, 2025, says Everdark Gladius starts in its three-wolf form and has substantially more dangerous attacks, including explosive after-effects on sword attacks. That guide also recommends holy damage, but the Everdark encounter needs its own tactics.
Version notes
Bandai Namco’s update listing includes a PS4/PS5 notice dated September 18, 2026 and a Steam notice dated July 2, 2026; both show Regulation Ver. 1.03.5. The notices list security improvements and a software update, respectively, but do not describe a Gladius balance change. Check the current official notes for your platform if you need to confirm the version you are playing.
