To beat Margit, the Fell Omen, focus on timing rather than constant attacks: dodge his delayed swings as they come in, conserve stamina, and strike during brief recovery openings. You can also use Margit’s Shackle or summon help. If the fight is overwhelming, leave and explore before returning; Elden Ring lets you choose the order of encounters.

Prepare for Margit—or come back later

Margit guards the approach to Stormveil Castle. Bandai Namco describes him as the boss who confronts players in front of the castle gates, but the fight does not have to be your next step. The publisher says encounter order is up to you and recommends adventuring to strengthen your character before taking on powerful enemies. It does not prescribe a level range for this fight.

Before trying again, consider whether your character could benefit from more progression or whether you simply need another attempt to learn Margit’s timing. The official beginner guide covers general preparation, combat actions, rolling, and stamina; it does not recommend a specific build for this boss. Read Bandai Namco’s beginner guide.

Optional: buy Margit’s Shackle

Bandai Namco recommends Margit’s Shackle as a tactical aid and says it can be purchased from the NPC at Murkwater Cave. The publisher describes the item as temporarily neutralizing Margit but does not specify its duration or number of uses in that advice. Treat it as an optional tool, not a requirement. See Bandai Namco’s Margit tips.

Optional: bring support

Official guidance lists spirits, NPCs, and other players as possible help. Summoning is a valid way to approach the encounter, not a sign that you have to defeat Margit alone.

How to handle Margit’s attacks

A current secondary boss guide describes delayed cane swings and short opportunities to counter. Use those patterns as a cue to watch the attack, not the wind-up: wait for the strike to commit, dodge its timing, then take a brief opening rather than extending your attack until Margit responds. GamesRadar’s Margit guide offers further move-by-move context.

  • Avoid panic-rolling. A delayed swing can punish a dodge made too early. Observe the motion and roll as the attack comes in.
  • Keep stamina available. Bandai Namco’s beginner guide notes that dashing consumes stamina. Repeated defensive actions and uncontrolled movement can leave you with fewer options when an attack arrives.
  • Take modest openings. After a sequence ends, land a brief counter and be ready to defend again instead of trying to fit in one more hit.

These are tactical principles drawn from the publisher’s general control guidance and secondary descriptions of Margit’s attack timing; they are not a claim that one weapon, shield, or build is universally best.

What changes later in the fight?

GamesRadar reports that Margit adds a sword and hammer in the second phase, increasing the variety of attacks to watch for. Give yourself time to read the new sequences and continue looking for recovery openings, especially after slower attacks. The guide supports this broad change in weapon variety; it does not establish a precise health threshold for the phase transition.

Choose the approach that fits you

Approach What it offers What to keep in mind
Fight now Practice reading Margit’s timing immediately. If you are running out of stamina or making little progress, the game allows you to explore and return.
Explore first More time to strengthen your character through adventuring. Bandai Namco supports choosing encounter order; it does not give a required level.
Fight solo A self-directed attempt to learn the encounter. You do not have to use this approach.
Summon help Officially supported assistance from spirits, NPCs, or other players. These are options, not prerequisites.
Use Margit’s Shackle An optional tool that Bandai Namco says temporarily neutralizes Margit. Its use count and exact duration are not stated in the publisher’s advice.
Skip the Shackle Attempt the fight without that tactical aid. The official guidance recommends the item but does not say it is necessary.

Is a strategy guide necessary?

No physical guide is needed for the tactics above. Future Press’s Elden Ring – Books of Knowledge, Volume II: Shards of the Shattering is a broad hardcover reference covering enemies and bosses, combat mechanics, weapons, spells, armor, and strategies—not a Margit-specific tool. Future Press lists it at 512 pages, in an 11 x 8.5-inch / 28 x 22-cm format, with English ISBN 9783869931197. See Future Press’s guide description.
