The main trap is its Enrage effect: it gains 2 Strength every time you play a Skill. Choose Skills for the damage they prevent or the setup they provide, and save enough resources to handle its documented full-health revivals.
Version note: Slay the Spire 2 remains in Early Access, so encounter mechanics and values may change. The game’s Steam listing says, “Games in Early Access are not complete and may or may not change further.” Check the intent shown in your current run before committing to a turn. Steam listing
What makes Test Subject dangerous?
The bestiary lists Test Subject at 100 starting HP, with Adaptable and Enrage. Adaptable means it revives stronger when defeated; Enrage gives it 2 Strength whenever you play a Skill. That Strength gain makes attacks more dangerous as the fight goes on, especially if you play Skills freely.
This does not mean you should stop playing Skills. A Skill that blocks substantial incoming damage, draws into a needed answer, or advances your deck’s win condition may be worth the Strength it grants. Judge each one against the current intent and the likely cost of letting the attack through.

Plan for the revivals, not just the first health bar
When defeated, Test Subject is documented as returning at full HP. Its first revival adds Painful Stabs; its second restores full HP again and adds Nemesis. The available encounter reference does not establish a complete turn-by-turn sequence or how attack values scale at each revival.
As a result, avoid spending every defensive resource simply to finish the first body if doing so leaves you exposed afterward. Think of the first defeat as a transition in the fight, not necessarily its end: preserve enough health and useful cards to respond to what follows. This is a planning implication of the documented revivals, not a guaranteed winning script.

Match your defense to the attack
The bestiary lists three attacks with different demands. Use the intent displayed in your game to decide what is coming and choose mitigation accordingly.
| Attack | Listed effect | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Multi-Claw | 10 damage three times | Because the damage arrives in multiple hits, consider how your available defense handles repeated hits rather than treating it like one large strike. |
| Big Pounce | 45 damage in one hit | This is a large single hit; weigh the available block or other mitigation against the cost of allowing it through. |
| Burning Growl | Adds three Status cards and gains a buff | Account for the added Status cards when planning a longer fight. The bestiary does not specify which cards are added or the exact effect of the buff. |
These are listed values, not a promise that every attack will have the same value at every stage or in every build. The encounter reference does not provide a complete account of scaling or sequencing.

How to make decisions during the fight
- Read the current intent. Identify whether Test Subject is preparing Multi-Claw, Big Pounce, Burning Growl, or another listed action before choosing your turn’s defense.
- Evaluate each Skill’s cost. Playing a Skill grants 2 Strength to Test Subject. Play it when its block, draw, or setup is worth making the boss’s attacks stronger; do not reject a necessary Skill just because it triggers Enrage.
- Keep the next stage in mind. The documented full-health revivals mean that resources spent now may be needed after a defeat. Avoid treating the first health bar as the whole encounter.
- Account for deck disruption. Burning Growl adds three Status cards, so a prolonged fight can become harder to manage as those cards enter the deck. Their identities and the boss’s buff effect are not specified in the reference.
What is not established about the encounter?
The available bestiary information does not establish Test Subject’s precise current turn order, a full fight script, or attack scaling across revivals. It also does not identify the Status cards added by Burning Growl or explain its buff. Since Slay the Spire 2 is still in Early Access, use the intent and values visible in your own game rather than relying on an assumed fixed sequence.
