Stay close to the Golden Hippopotamus, dodge its open-mouth charge late and sideways, then take only a short punish during its recovery. At around 60–65% health remaining, golden quills add three attacks; watch their tells and evade laterally rather than trying to trade damage. If the fight is still a wall, explore for Scadutree Fragments or reach Shadow Keep from the east and return later.

Where to find it—and whether you can come back later

The Golden Hippopotamus is in the first chamber beyond the Shadow Keep Main Gate Site of Grace. Defeating it opens the rest of Shadow Keep and advances the story. You can defer the gate fight: an eastern approach through Bonny Village lets you enter Shadow Keep and return later. Mobalytics and PCGamesN describe these location and route details.

Prepare for the fight

Guides recommend character level 150 and Scadutree Blessing level 8; treat these as targets, not entry requirements. The blessing system increases damage dealt and reduces damage received in the Land of Shadow, so exploring for more Scadutree Fragments can make the encounter more forgiving. Mobalytics also recommends physical damage reduction for the first phase and holy protection against the quills. A medium or light equip load can make dodging easier; the boss can break guards quickly, so avoid relying on blocking every attack. PCGamesN recommends Scadutree level 8 as well, while noting that confidence in dodge timing matters.

Phase one: dodge the charge, then punish briefly

Stay near the boss rather than retreating across the arena. Its open-mouth rush can end in a grab: wait until it commits, then roll sideways late. Rolling too early is risky, especially against its delayed charge. After a successful dodge, circle toward its side or rear when practical.

Watch for follow-up bites and head slams before attacking. The head-slam recovery can give you an opening; rolling forward through the slam is one suggested counter. Take one brief attack sequence—fast weapons may fit a few hits, while a slower heavy weapon should usually commit less—then reset and watch for the next tell. Heal only during a genuine recovery, not while the boss is winding up.

Phase two: read the quill attacks

At roughly 60–65% health remaining, golden quills appear and three quill attacks join the existing moveset. The timing depends on your distance and position, so use these counters as responses to the tell rather than fixed, frame-perfect rules.

Quill slam

When it slams and sends quills raining down, wait for the projectiles to come, then roll repeatedly to one side. Avoid staying in front of the boss as the volley resolves.

Quill spin

When it curls into a spinning attack and releases spikes, Mobalytics recommends two rolls to the right as the spin begins. Adjust if your position or the arena edge makes that direction unsafe.

Quill roll

If it leaps, curls into a ball and rolls toward you, run laterally to create space, then roll as it closes. Trying to stand your ground in its path makes the attack harder to avoid.

The original charge, bite and head-slam patterns still matter after the quills appear. Keep the same short-punish rhythm rather than pressing an attack through a new phase-two tell. Mobalytics details the quill counters; PCGamesN also flags the barrage and rolling spike attack.

Choose damage you can land safely

Slash damage, bleed and stance pressure are reasonable approaches, but no single build is established as best for everyone. Favor a weapon and damage type you can apply during short recovery windows; a theoretical weakness is not useful if its attack animation gets you hit. The guides conflict on elemental resistance, and do not establish an authoritative, patch-tagged resistance table, so there is no sound basis here for rebuilding around a claimed fire or frost weakness.

  • Fast melee or bleed: Use brief attacks and withdraw before the next move. PCGamesN recommends fast bleed attacks.
  • Heavy weapons: Aim for stance pressure, but avoid long commitments when the boss is free to attack. PCGamesN suggests Stonebarb Cracked Tear for a strength setup.
  • Ranged builds: Cast or shoot after an opening, not during a long windup while the boss is focused on you. PCGamesN suggests Rock Sling and describes Lightning Spear as slower but usable; ranged attacks are safer when an ally draws the boss’s attention.

Summons and other help

Redmane Freyja or Hornsent may have summon signs outside the fog door if you completed the relevant conversations; their signs are not guaranteed to be available on every playthrough. PCGamesN describes Freyja as more durable and Hornsent as useful for bleed. A Mimic Tear is another possible aid, depending on your build.

If you would rather change the conditions than keep attempting the fight, take the eastern approach through Bonny Village, explore for Scadutree Fragments, and return when better prepared. That route defers the gate encounter rather than making the boss irrelevant to Shadow Keep’s progression.

What defeating the boss gives you

Mobalytics and PowerPyx list the rewards as 200,000 runes, two Scadutree Fragments and Aspects of the Crucible: Thorns. The fragments contribute to the Land of Shadow blessing system. Mobalytics and PowerPyx list the same reward amounts.
