Yellowbrow is the final boss of Chapter 3, but the encounter is a sequence rather than one uninterrupted fight: you face Yellowbrow, the Enhanced Macaque Chief, a short enemy-filled route, and then Yellowbrow again. The safest approach is to punish slow attacks briefly, retreat from arena-wide blasts, and save a fully charged heavy attack or Wandering Wight for his Golden Body.
This guide covers the encounter’s attack and story spoilers. Attack patterns and counters below are based on Gamer Guides’ Yellowbrow guide, released August 19, 2024, and last updated March 12, 2025.

Prepare for the fight
You’ll find Yellowbrow in New Thunderclap Temple. His attacks are mostly thunder-based, so Gamer Guides recommends a three-piece Loongscale set and the Thunderstone Curio for shock resistance. Carry Shock-Quelling Powder to address the Shocked State.
Equip your strongest available weapon. If you use Thrust Stance and have completed the Prisoner quest, Chu-Bai Spear is one option. These are guide recommendations, not independently tested requirements; the encounter can be approached without treating any item as mandatory.

First Yellowbrow fight: punish slow attacks, leave the blast zones
Stay alert for the recovery after Yellowbrow’s slower mace attacks. Dodge toward or past a thrust or slam, then move around to his side or rear as the small electrical blast resolves. Take a short punish and be ready to disengage rather than extending a combo into a stomp or follow-up.
Thunder waves and wisps
- Two corner waves: When he points his mace and sends two waves from an arena corner, create distance and move or dodge laterally.
- Homing wisps: When he raises the mace and sends thunder wisps after you, walk in one direction, then dodge across their approach as they close in.
Shockwave, explosion, and sweeping combo
- Expanding ground shockwave: When Yellowbrow drives his mace into the floor and pulls it free, jump as the wave reaches you.
- Large electric explosion: His teleport to the back-center of the arena signals the charge-up. Run to a far edge or corner and wait for the blast to end; don’t try to interrupt it.
- Long sweeping combo: Prioritize survival and retreat from the repeated strikes. Cloud Step can serve as a decoy if it is available.
Look for safer openings while Yellowbrow is goading you, after a slow attack, or after a heavy attack stuns him. These are short opportunities to deal damage, not a cue to commit to a long combo.

Enhanced Macaque Chief: escape the spin, punish the last slash
The Chief’s attacks reward patience. For the wave combo, get clear of the initial swings, then dodge through the red waves as they converge after the sequence.
For the spinning slam combo, roll away from the opening swipe and ground stab. Run clear while he spins; when he finishes with a delayed forward slash, dodge toward it and punish during the recovery.

If he creates two clones, focus first on the one Zhu Bajie is not engaging. Gamer Guides notes that the clones have relatively little health.
Between the two Yellowbrow fights
After the Enhanced Macaque Chief goes down, follow the linear route through groups of enemies while transformed. The path leads back to the final Yellowbrow encounter.

Final Yellowbrow fight: break Golden Body, then use the opening
Golden Body
When Yellowbrow turns gold, ordinary attacks are deflected. Break the defense with a fully charged heavy attack or the Wandering Wight spirit. Once it gives way, use the brief vulnerability window to deal damage.
Thunder Sword and teleport grapple
- Thunder Sword: Let the charged weapon come down, then dodge laterally just before it hits.
- Teleport grapple: If Yellowbrow disappears when below half health, keep backing away and roll to avoid the grapple.
Keep space when attacks cover the arena
Retreat from the large explosive shockwave and electric explosion. Move laterally to avoid the line wave and lightning bolts. If an electric circle forms around Yellowbrow, wait for it to end instead of forcing your way in.

His attacks speed up and can chain together in the final portion. Preserve enough health and healing for that stretch, and take damage windows only when an attack has clearly left him recovering.
