The player must have joined the server at least once, and YourUsername must be the account username exactly as the server knows it. In in-game chat, use the same command with a leading slash: /setaccesslevel "YourUsername" admin.
If you have not created or accessed an administrator account yet, log in with the administrator credentials created when the server first started. Hosting-panel passwords and in-game administrator passwords are not always the same after setup.

The command that grants administrator access
Project Zomboid uses an access-level command rather than a separate “make me admin” switch. The essential syntax is:

Replace YourUsername with the exact account name of the player you want to promote. Keep the quotation marks when the username contains spaces or punctuation. The command assigns the admin access level to that existing server account.

If the panel or administrator controls do not appear immediately, disconnect and reconnect with the account that received the role.
What you need before promoting a player
- Access to the dedicated server console or a hosting panel with a live console field.
- The exact account username of the player being promoted.
- A server that is running and accepting commands.
- Enough privilege to execute
setaccesslevel. A normal, unprivileged player cannot grant themselves administrator access through chat. - The server build number, because Build 41 and Build 42 use different role names.
The target account must have connected once. Joining creates the server-side account record that the command modifies. A display name copied from Steam, a nickname shown in the player list, or a differently capitalized spelling may not identify the account record the server expects.
Method A: promote your normal player account
This is usually the cleanest approach when you want to play from your existing character account rather than from the built-in administrator account.
1. Start the server and open its console
Start the dedicated server, then open either its local console window or your host’s live web console. Provider interfaces use different labels, but the required feature is a field that sends commands directly to the running server.
2. Join with the account you want to promote
Connect to the server using the player account that should become an administrator. Remain connected long enough for the server to create the account record. If you have never joined, promotion can fail with a “Player not found” message even when the spelling appears correct.

3. Run the command in the server console
In the console, enter:
setaccesslevel "YourUsername" admin
Use the account username, not a character name. If the username includes spaces, preserve the quotation marks. Submit the command through the console’s execute or send control.
4. Reconnect and verify
Disconnect and reconnect if the administrative panel, permissions, or administrator controls are not visible immediately. Verify that you rejoined with the same account that was named in the command; promoting one account does not grant another account the same role.
5. Use chat only after you have sufficient privileges
Once an administrator account is active, you can promote another account from in-game chat:
/setaccesslevel "OtherUsername" admin
The slash is mandatory in chat. A command copied without the slash is interpreted as ordinary chat text instead of a server command.
Method B: sign in with the built-in administrator account
A dedicated-server setup creates an administrator account from the credentials supplied on the first server start. Hosting panels may display those credentials in a configuration page, but the exact location and labels vary by provider.

Find the credentials
Look in the server setup information or hosting panel for the administrator username and password. Some provider documentation describes an admin account, while other setups may use a different administrator username. Treat a displayed default password as provider-specific rather than as a universal Project Zomboid password.

Log in with that account
Join the server using the administrator credentials. After login, you can operate the server from that account or grant administrator access to your regular player with:
/setaccesslevel "YourUsername" admin
Using a separate regular-player account for normal play can help you avoid accidentally using administrative commands on the character you use every day, but the game does not require separate accounts.
Console commands versus chat commands
The same command has two forms because the input locations parse text differently.
- Console: enter
setaccesslevel "YourUsername" adminwith no leading slash. - Chat: enter
/setaccesslevel "YourUsername" adminwith one leading slash. - Help: use
help setaccesslevelin the console or/help setaccesslevelin chat to display the syntax and access levels accepted by your server build.
Adding a slash in the console can cause the line to be ignored or treated as invalid. Omitting it in chat leaves the text as a normal message. If a command appears to do nothing, first check which input field you used.

Build 41 and Build 42 access levels
Role names are not identical between the two major builds. Build 42 documentation lists admin, moderator, gm, observer, priority, and user. Build 41 documentation uses a different fixed set that includes overseer and commonly uses none when removing privileges.

For a typical Build 42 demotion, set the account to the ordinary user level:
setaccesslevel "YourUsername" user
On an older Build 41 server, do not assume user or none is the correct value without checking the help output. A role rejected by the server is usually a build-and-syntax mismatch, not evidence that the account name is wrong.
Changing the administrator password
The first server start creates the administrator account from the initial credentials. Changing a password field in a hosting panel later may not update that already-created in-game account. If the old password is rejected, change the account password from the server console while you still have sufficient access.
Use:
setpassword "admin" "newpassword"
Replace admin with the actual administrator username if your setup uses another name. Replace newpassword with the password you want to use. This command changes the password for the named server account; it does not automatically change unrelated panel, FTP, or billing credentials.

After changing it, reconnect with the new password. If you cannot access any administrator session and the panel’s password no longer works, consult the host’s recovery controls or support documentation for that server installation rather than assuming the panel value will overwrite the existing account.

“Player not found”
- Have the target player join the server once, then run the command again.
- Copy the exact account username used at login. A Steam display name or character name may not be the server account name.
- Check capitalization, spaces, punctuation, and quotation marks.
The console command does nothing
- Remove the leading slash; slashes are for chat, not the server console.
- Confirm that the server is running and that you are typing into the live command field rather than a log viewer or configuration text box.
- Run
help setaccesslevelto confirm that your build recognizes the command.
The role is rejected
- Run
help setaccesslevelor/help setaccesslevel. - Compare the accepted levels with your build. Build 41 and Build 42 do not expose the same fixed role names.
- Use the exact spelling and case shown by the help output.
The administrator password is rejected
- Check whether the account was created at first start with a different password.
- Do not assume a later hosting-panel password change altered the in-game account.
- If an administrator session remains available, run
setpasswordfor the correct username, then reconnect.
The admin panel is missing after promotion
- Disconnect and reconnect after the command completes.
- Make sure the account you used to reconnect is the same account named in
setaccesslevel. - Confirm that the command was issued on the intended server instance, especially when a host manages more than one server.
Choosing a hosting setup for administration
If you are deciding between hosting arrangements, focus on the controls that determine whether you can recover access and manage players reliably. Provider documentation establishes these practical comparison points, while prices and performance depend on the specific plan and location.

Hosting interfaces differ. One provider may expose a copied administrator password in a Config panel, while another may document an admin account workflow. The underlying Project Zomboid steps remain the same: join once, identify the exact account username, and issue the command in the correct context.

Removing or reducing administrator access
Access levels are assigned to the account named in the command. On Build 42, a typical way to return an administrator account to the ordinary level is:
setaccesslevel "YourUsername" user
Use the chat form with a slash if entering it in game:
/setaccesslevel "YourUsername" user
Build 41 servers may use different removal semantics and may commonly accept none. Check the server’s help output before applying a demotion. Reconnect the affected account so the changed permissions are loaded.

- Identify whether the server is running Build 41 or Build 42.
- Open the dedicated-server console or a live hosting web console.
- Join the server once with the account to be promoted.
- Copy the exact account username used to join.
- Run
setaccesslevel "YourUsername" adminin the console, without a slash. - Reconnect with that same account.
- If the command fails, run
help setaccessleveland correct the role name or command context. - If you instead need to use the built-in account, retrieve the first-start credentials from the setup or panel and log in with them.
- If the administrator password no longer matches, use
setpasswordfrom an authorized console or administrator session.
The essential distinction is between the account that exists on the server and the credentials used to manage the hosting panel. Once the target account has joined and the correctly formatted command has been sent to the correct server build, promotion is an account-level change rather than a character-level setting.
