How to Upload an Existing Save to an Enshrouded Dedicated Server

To move an existing Enshrouded world to a dedicated server, stop the server, back up both save sets, find the local world files, and copy them into the directory named by saveDirectory (normally ./savegame). If the host requires the default world name, rename the uploaded hexadecimal file to 3ad85aea and keep its matching metadata files. The world and bases transfer, but character progression remains on each player’s client.

What you are actually transferring

An Enshrouded dedicated server stores the shared world: terrain state, explored areas, placed buildings, defeated bosses, unlocked world progression and other changes that belong to the save. Your local save is a set of files rather than a single human-readable file, and the filenames are static hexadecimal identifiers.

Character data works differently. Keen Games states that “Character progression is stored only on clients,” while “The world progression is stored on the dedicated servers.” Uploading the world therefore moves the shared map and base state, but it does not copy every player’s inventory, levels, skills or other character profile to a new computer. Each player normally joins with the character data already present on that player’s client.

A server save can be about 1 MB to 100 MB depending on world complexity. The game’s FAQ says saves are generated every five minutes, so the newest file is not necessarily the one with the latest visible change if the server was stopped before its next save cycle.

Before you touch the server: stop it and make two backups

Never replace files while the dedicated server is running. A running process can write over the files you are copying, leave an incomplete index, or recreate a blank world on the next start.

  1. Stop the dedicated server. Use the hosting panel’s Stop or Shut down control, or stop the server process when you self-host. Wait until the panel reports that it is offline and no server process remains.
  2. Back up the current server save. Copy the entire server savegame directory, not just one file, to a separate folder. This is your rollback if the upload is incomplete or the wrong world is selected.
  3. Back up the local save. Copy the local Enshrouded save files to another disk or an optional USB flash drive. Keen Games recommends making a copy of all save files before changes to prevent accidental loss.
  4. Record the current state. Note the server’s existing filenames and modified dates. Keeping this information makes it easier to identify what changed after the migration.

Do not delete the generated server world until both backups open successfully in your file manager and you have confirmed which directory the server reads.

Find your existing Enshrouded world

The location depends on whether Steam Cloud is enabled for the game. Check both locations only if you are unsure which storage mode was active; do not mix files from different worlds without checking their metadata and dates.

Steam Cloud enabled

Inspect the Steam userdata folder:

C:Program Files (x86)Steamuserdata<SteamUserID>1203620remote

1203620 is Enshrouded’s app ID. Replace <SteamUserID> with the numeric Steam account folder on your computer. Cloud synchronization can leave several rolling copies, so a file’s presence alone does not prove that it is the active world.

Steam Cloud disabled

Local saves are typically under:

%USERPROFILE%/Saved Games/enshrouded

Paste that path into File Explorer’s address bar. If Windows expands the environment variable, it will take you to the Saved Games folder for the account that played the world.

How to distinguish several worlds

World files use hexadecimal names rather than a world title. Keen Games documents static names including 3ad85aea and 3bd85c7d, along with other identifiers and rolling copies for each world.

  • Sort the folder by modified date and relate the timestamps to your last play session.
  • Look for the companion metadata files beside each world file. Their names usually share the same base identifier and may include an _info suffix.
  • Keep any relevant _index file with the save set. The index can identify which rolling copy is active.
  • If two candidates have similar dates, make a temporary copy of each set rather than deleting one. The correct set is the one whose base and world state you recognize after a test start.

Do not rename files merely to make them easier to read. Rename only when the server or host requires its expected identifier, and preserve every matching suffix.

Identify the server’s real save directory

The server reads the directory configured by saveDirectory, not necessarily the folder that looks most obvious in a control panel.

Official dedicated-server tool

Open enshrouded_server.json in the dedicated-server installation and find the saveDirectory setting. The documented default is:

"saveDirectory": "./savegame"

./savegame is relative to the server’s working directory. If the value has been changed, use the configured path instead of creating a second folder with the default name.

Rented or managed host

Use the provider’s file manager or SFTP access. Some panels place savegame at the top level; others expose the server’s working directory one level above it. If the panel has a configuration editor, check enshrouded_server.json and read saveDirectory there. A one-click file manager changes how you navigate, but not which save files the game needs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you are still choosing a host, Godlike.Host’s Enshrouded server hosting offers SFTP/FTP access, a Pterodactyl-based panel with a config editor, and up to three free backups a day with restore, which suits the backup-and-rollback steps in this guide.

Confirm the path before uploading

  • Make sure the directory contains the server’s generated save or its expected save location.
  • Check that you are editing the same installation and instance that your panel starts.
  • Do not assume a folder named savegame is active if the JSON points somewhere else.
  • Keep a copy of the configuration file before changing any path.

Upload and replace the generated world

Once the server is stopped, the backups are complete and the destination is confirmed, replace the generated world with your local save set.

  1. Open the configured directory. Navigate to the path from saveDirectory, normally ./savegame.
  2. Move the generated files aside. Rename the existing server save folder or files, or download them before removing them. Do not permanently delete anything until the new world has loaded correctly.
  3. Upload the local world file. Transfer the hexadecimal world file in binary mode through SFTP, or use the panel’s upload control. Wait for the transfer to finish before closing the browser or client.
  4. Upload companions. Include the matching _info metadata file and the relevant _index file when they are present in your local set or required by the host. Keep each companion’s hexadecimal base name aligned with the world file.
  5. Apply the expected world name. If the host expects the common default name, rename the world file to 3ad85aea. Rename its matching metadata files in the same way, preserving suffixes such as _info. Do not rename unrelated files from another world.
  6. Check extensions and case. Verify that the panel did not append a second extension such as .zip or .txt, and that every file is in the save directory itself rather than an extra nested folder.
  7. Start the server. Use the panel or launch the process after all files are in place.

The replacement overwrites the server’s current world state. That is why the original server directory must remain available as a rollback copy until verification is complete.

Self-hosted server versus a rented host

The save content is the same in both cases; the differences are access and control.

Task Self-hosted dedicated server Rented or managed host
Stop the server Stop the local server process or service. Use the provider panel’s Stop or Shut down action.
Reach the save Open the local installation and the path in saveDirectory. Use the panel’s file manager or SFTP; the visible root may differ from the physical path.
Read configuration Edit or inspect enshrouded_server.json directly. Use the provider’s configuration editor or download the JSON if permitted.
Backups and rollback Copy the directory to another local disk or removable drive. Download a copy before deletion and retain any provider snapshot separately.
Filename handling You control the hexadecimal name, companions and index. The host may require 3ad85aea or a particular index layout; follow its documented naming requirement.
Upload interface Local file operations or SFTP. One-click file manager, SFTP, or both.

Changing hosts does not convert the save into a different format. It changes where you put the files and which naming convention the server startup expects.

Restart and verify the migrated world

  1. Start the server and wait for it to finish loading before joining.
  2. Connect using the same server entry and check a recognizable base, nearby structures and a known world change.
  3. Confirm that the world is not a fresh spawn and that the server produces a recent save timestamp after running for a few minutes.
  4. Have another player join if possible. Their character should use their existing client-side progression while the shared world reflects the uploaded save.
  5. Keep the backup until everyone confirms that the important base and world state are present.

Do not judge success only by the server appearing online. A server can start normally while reading an empty directory, the wrong instance, or a mismatched filename.

Troubleshooting an upload that does not work

The server loads a blank world or starts a new game

  • Stop the server again.
  • Recheck saveDirectory in enshrouded_server.json; a similarly named folder may not be active.
  • Confirm that the world file is directly inside the configured directory, not inside an extra folder created during upload.
  • Check the exact hexadecimal filename and required extension.
  • Restore the backup if the directory has been altered repeatedly, then retry with one known save set.

The server ignores the uploaded file

Some hosts look specifically for the default identifier 3ad85aea. Stop the server, rename the selected world to that identifier if the host’s instructions require it, and rename its matching _info companion in the same way. Include the relevant _index file when your save set contains one or the host requires it. Never combine an index from one world with data from another.

Recent progress is missing

Compare modified dates among the hexadecimal files and rolling copies. The five-minute save interval means a change made shortly before shutdown may not have reached disk. The index can select an active rolling copy, so upload the complete matching set rather than choosing a single file by size alone.

A friend’s character appears reset

World migration does not automatically migrate client profiles. Character progression is stored on each client, while the dedicated server stores world progression. The player should connect with the same client account and local character data used before the move. If that local data is unavailable, the world file cannot recreate it.

The upload is rejected or incomplete

  • Check the transfer log for a failed or partial file.
  • Confirm that the server is stopped and the destination has enough available storage.
  • Upload the files again without changing their names or extensions during transfer.
  • Use the saved backup rather than repeatedly modifying a possibly damaged copy.

Save-file details worth recording

Detail What it means for the migration
Default save directory ./savegame, unless saveDirectory in enshrouded_server.json specifies another path.
Common default world name 3ad85aea; some local worlds use other static hexadecimal identifiers.
Companion files Matching _info metadata and, where present or required, an _index file.
Local Steam Cloud app folder 1203620 under Steam userdata.
Typical server save size Approximately 1 MB to 100 MB, depending on world complexity.
Automatic save cadence Every five minutes according to the Enshrouded FAQ; the latest visible action may therefore be newer than the latest file.
Dedicated-server query port 15637 by default in Keen Games’ 2025 server documentation. This is a connection setting, not a replacement for the save directory.

A repeatable migration checklist

  • Server stopped and confirmed offline.
  • Original server savegame directory copied elsewhere.
  • Local Steam Cloud or Saved Games folder backed up.
  • Correct world identified using hexadecimal name, companions and modified dates.
  • saveDirectory checked in enshrouded_server.json or confirmed in the host panel.
  • Generated server save moved aside, not irreversibly deleted.
  • World file and matching _info/_index files uploaded to the configured directory.
  • Filename changed to 3ad85aea only when the host requires that default.
  • Extensions, nesting and transfer completion checked.
  • Server restarted and the base, world state and new save timestamp verified.
  • Backups retained until all players confirm the result.

What to expect after the move

The uploaded world becomes the shared state for everyone who joins that server. Buildings, terrain changes and other world progress should come from the selected save set. Players’ character progression remains tied to their clients, so a successful world migration and a missing character profile are separate issues. Treat them separately when diagnosing a problem.

If the server starts a new world, the first checks are always the configured directory, the exact hexadecimal filename and the presence of the matching metadata/index files. If the correct world loads but a recent action is absent, inspect rolling copies and modified dates before replacing anything again.
