Install WHM and cPanel on a newly provisioned, supported 64-bit Linux VPS by logging in as root, checking the static IPv4 address and server resources, and running cPanel’s official installer from /home. The command is:

After the installer finishes, open WHM, complete its first-run configuration, verify the hostname, DNS and license, and only then create hosting accounts. cPanel requires a separate license for every server, although a new installation can use a 15-day trial.
What you need before installing
cPanel changes a server’s web, mail, database, DNS and security configuration. It is not an application that should be layered onto an already configured web server. Start with a VPS whose operating-system image is supported, whose disk is empty apart from the base system, and to which you have direct root access.

A supported 64-bit operating system
Current cPanel documentation lists Ubuntu 24.04 LTS as installable. AlmaLinux 8, 9 and 10 are also listed, with requirements tied to the cPanel version you intend to run. Select the exact image and cPanel-version combination shown as compatible when you provision the VPS.
Do not choose Rocky Linux for a new installation. cPanel says that new Rocky Linux installations are no longer allowed and that support for existing Rocky Linux installations has been removed. Pre-built images and provider templates can also contain changes that interfere with installation, so a clean distribution image is safer than a customized marketplace image.

cPanel does not support ARM processors. Choose a 64-bit x86 VPS. An IPv6-only server cannot be licensed, so the VPS must have a public, routable IPv4 address.

CPU, memory and disk
For Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, cPanel documents the following figures. They are vendor requirements, not a performance guarantee; busy sites, mail volume, databases and backups can require substantially more capacity.

Installation and upgrades need at least 5 GB of additional free space in /usr/local/cpanel. That space is in addition to the base disk requirement. Check free space before starting and leave room for operating-system updates, logs, mail queues, account data and backups.
Network, credentials and licensing prerequisites
- Obtain the VPS provider’s root password or an SSH key that permits root login.
- Confirm that the server has a public static IPv4 address. A changing or private-only address can prevent licensing and reliable DNS.
- Verify outbound network access and DNS resolution from the VPS. The installer must download packages and contact cPanel services.
- Choose a hostname that resolves correctly in DNS. A fully qualified hostname is needed for a dependable mail and control-panel setup.
- Plan the license before putting the server into production. Every server needs its own cPanel & WHM license.
Prepare a clean VPS
Provision a fresh image
Select Ubuntu 24.04 LTS or a compatible AlmaLinux release from the provider’s standard operating-system images. Avoid snapshots, templates and images that already contain a web stack unless the provider explicitly identifies them as clean and compatible. cPanel’s documentation states: “Only install cPanel & WHM on a freshly-installed operating system.”

Do not install Apache, Nginx, PHP, a mail transfer agent, a database server, DNS software or another hosting panel first. cPanel’s installer installs and configures the services it needs. Existing packages and custom configuration can create file conflicts, incompatible versions and service failures.
Account for security software
On Ubuntu, do not install SELinux before cPanel. AppArmor is compatible, but a fresh image with the provider’s default security profile is still the least complicated starting point. Do not make unrelated hardening changes until the base WHM configuration is complete; apply them in a controlled sequence so that a blocked port or policy does not look like an installer failure.
Check the server from the root shell
Connect over SSH as root. Before launching the installer, verify that the shell is actually root and that the image is the one you intended to deploy. You can use the following checks without changing the system:
whoami
uname -m
df -h
getent hosts example.comThe first command should return root; uname -m should identify a 64-bit x86 architecture; df -h lets you inspect available space; and getent hosts confirms that DNS resolution works. Replace example.com with a domain you control or another known-resolving name.
Run the official cPanel installer
1. Change to the download directory
cPanel’s documented command runs from /home. Staying in that directory keeps the downloaded installer in the expected location:
cd /home2. Download and execute the installer
Run the complete command as root:
cd /home && curl -o latest -L https://securedownloads.cpanel.net/latest && sh latestThe URL in this command is cPanel’s official secured-download endpoint: https://securedownloads.cpanel.net/latest. The command downloads the current installer to a file named latest and then executes it.

3. Leave the process uninterrupted
The installer downloads and configures cPanel’s managed service stack. Do not start competing services, edit configuration files or reboot the VPS while it is running. Completion time varies with VPS performance and network conditions; cPanel does not publish a guaranteed duration.
Use a reliable SSH session or a provider console so a dropped connection does not leave you unsure whether the process is still active. If the connection closes, reconnect and inspect the installer’s current output and service state rather than starting a second installer immediately. Starting over on a partially modified system can make diagnosis harder.
4. Treat an early failure as a prerequisite problem
If the installer rejects the operating system, architecture or network, stop and correct that condition instead of forcing it. A failed compatibility check usually means the VPS image must be replaced. If the process reports insufficient space, expand the disk or rebuild the VPS with a larger allocation, then confirm free space in /usr/local/cpanel. If package conflicts appear, rebuild from a clean image rather than removing random packages from the existing server.
Complete the first WHM configuration
Open the WHM address
When installation completes, use the WHM address supplied by the server or provider and sign in with the root credentials. The first-run interface is where you establish the server’s identity, networking and license state. If the page does not load, check that the VPS is running, the address resolves to its public IPv4, and your provider’s firewall allows the WHM service.
Set and verify the hostname
Use a fully qualified hostname rather than a bare word such as server. Confirm that the hostname resolves to the VPS and that reverse-DNS configuration is appropriate for your provider. Correct naming at this stage prevents confusing certificate, mail-delivery and account-creation problems later.
Configure DNS deliberately
Decide whether the VPS will be authoritative for hosted domains or whether another DNS provider will remain authoritative. Whichever design you choose, make sure the nameservers, glue records where required, A records and reverse-DNS settings agree with the hostname and public IPv4. Test resolution from outside the VPS; a lookup that works only from the server itself does not prove that public DNS is ready.

Confirm the license status
Check WHM’s license state before creating accounts. A server must have its own cPanel & WHM license. New installations can activate a free 15-day trial through a cPanel Store account with a verified email address. The trial is intended for evaluation; continuing to operate the server after it ends requires a paid license.
cPanel’s licensing information identifies a Cloud/VPS licensing category and requires a public-facing static IP for a monthly license. Prices and available terms change, so check the live cPanel pricing page at the time you deploy instead of relying on an old figure. Include the license in the VPS’s recurring budget.
Apply the remaining WHM defaults
Finish the initial wizard’s required settings, including contact information, resolver choices and any nameserver configuration it requests. Review each value before saving. Keep a record of the root access method, hostname, nameservers, IPv4 address and license account in your operations documentation.

Create hosting accounts only after the base setup
Do not add customer domains during installation. First verify that WHM reports a valid license, the hostname resolves, DNS responds from an external network, and the core services are running. Then create one test account and check the complete path:
- Create the account in WHM with the intended domain and package.
- Confirm that the domain’s DNS points to the VPS and that the account receives the expected nameservers.
- Upload a small test page and request it over the domain.
- Send and receive a test message only after the mail-related DNS records and reverse-DNS settings are correct.
- Review disk usage, service logs and backup settings before adding more accounts.
This staged approach separates a WHM installation problem from a domain-DNS or application problem and gives you a known-good account to use for later troubleshooting.

The VPS uses an unsupported image
Rocky Linux is the most important current example: cPanel does not allow new installations and no longer supports existing Rocky installations. ARM images are also unsupported. Rebuild the VPS with Ubuntu 24.04 LTS or a compatible AlmaLinux 8, 9 or 10 image, then repeat the preparation checks on the fresh system.

The image was not actually clean
Provider templates sometimes include web servers, mail software, security agents or altered repositories. If the installer reports package conflicts or services that cannot be replaced, rebuilding from the provider’s plain distribution image is safer than trying to unwind every change manually.
The installer cannot download packages
Check the default route, outbound firewall rules and DNS resolution. The getent hosts check should return an address for a known domain. Correct the VPS network or resolver configuration and rerun the installer only when the underlying connectivity is stable.
There is not enough disk space
Compare the VPS allocation with the Ubuntu figures and remember the extra 5 GB required in /usr/local/cpanel for installation and upgrades. Expanding the disk may require a filesystem-resize step specific to the provider. If expansion is unavailable, migrate to a larger fresh VPS rather than deleting unknown system files.
WHM cannot obtain a license
Confirm that the server has a public static IPv4 and is not IPv6-only. Verify that the address presented to cPanel is the same address assigned by the provider, then check the license account or start the eligible 15-day trial with a verified email. A license cannot be attached to a server that has no usable public IPv4.
WHM opens but the hostname or DNS is wrong
Correct the hostname and public DNS records, then allow DNS caches to expire before judging the result. Check resolution from a network outside the VPS and make sure reverse DNS is set through the VPS provider. Do not create additional accounts until the server identity is consistent.

The cheapest VPS is not necessarily the least expensive cPanel deployment. Evaluate the complete operating cost and the controls you will need to recover from a failed update or an accidentally deleted account.
- Image compatibility: confirm the offered Ubuntu or AlmaLinux image and the cPanel version it supports.
- Root access: ensure you can log in as root or use an approved root-capable console during installation and recovery.
- IPv4 and DNS: require a public static IPv4, reverse-DNS control and the ability to set or delegate DNS records.
- Capacity: compare CPU, RAM and disk with the cPanel minimums, then add headroom for accounts, databases, mail and backups.
- Virtualization: check the virtualization type and whether the provider permits the kernel and networking features required by the selected image.
- Backups and snapshots: verify retention, restore procedure and whether snapshots are available before major WHM or operating-system changes.
- Network reliability: consider the provider’s connectivity, IPv4 routing and console access because cPanel administration depends on continuous network reachability.
- Total recurring cost: add the cPanel license to the VPS fee and include backup storage, extra disk and additional IPv4 charges where applicable.
Operational checklist after installation
- Record the VPS public IPv4, hostname, operating-system release and cPanel license account.
- Confirm that WHM is licensed and that the hostname resolves externally.
- Configure DNS and reverse DNS before onboarding real domains.
- Set up backups and test a restore; a snapshot that has never been restored is not a verified recovery plan.
- Monitor disk space, especially
/usr/local/cpanel, before every upgrade. - Keep the root access method protected and documented for the responsible administrator.
- Test one complete website and mail workflow before creating many accounts.
With a clean supported image, the documented resources, a static IPv4 and a functioning license, the installation itself is a single official command. Most avoidable failures come from starting with the wrong operating system, pre-installing services, running out of space or attempting to license an IPv6-only server.
