In vanilla multiplayer, the normal way to support friends is to invest in Intellect and unlock Charismatic Nature. Keep that player near the group so the documented passive aura can reach nearby teammates. Food and drinks normally affect only the player who consumes them; directly applying a named buff to someone else requires server-administrator access and the buffplayer console command.

- A consumable effect: A player eats or drinks an item and receives that item’s status effect personally.
- An administrator command: A server operator targets another player by name or ID and applies a named buff directly.
These methods have different access requirements and targeting rules. A normal survivor can use the perk and personal consumables. The command is an administrative tool, not a replacement for the survival-game progression system.
Method 1: Use Charismatic Nature for a normal multiplayer support role
Charismatic Nature is the documented vanilla support perk. It belongs to the Intellect tree and provides a passive buff to nearby teammates. It is also identified as the only dedicated “support” perk in vanilla 7 Days to Die.
#1 Best Overall
- Explore – Huge, rich environments, with unique biomes and worlds up to 100 square kilometres in size.
- Craft – Handcraft and repair weapons, clothes, armour, tools, vehicles, with hundreds of recipes and schematics.
- Build – Design your fort with traps, electricity, auto turrets, and gadgets to survive in a fully destructible and mouldable world.
- Cooperate or Compete – Work together to build settlements or against each other in a wasteland where zombies and outlaws rule the land.
- Farm or Hunt – Plant gardens for sustainable resources or head out to the wilderness and hunt over a dozen unique animals.
Unlock the perk
- Join or create a multiplayer world.
- Choose one player to act as the group’s support character.
- Spend that character’s progression points in the Intellect tree until Charismatic Nature is available.
- Take the perk through the normal in-game perk interface. The exact point cost and rank progression can change with game updates, so use the values shown by your current build rather than an older guide.
The support player does not need to administer an item to each teammate. Once the perk is active, the useful positioning rule is simple: remain close to the people who need the aura.
Keep the support player with the group
Charismatic Nature is described as affecting nearby teammates. The available documentation does not establish a verified radius or a rank-by-rank numeric bonus, so do not plan around a specific number of blocks, meters, or percentage points.
Recommended Free Tools
For a practical team routine, have the support character travel with the main group, stand with the combat line during a horde night, and regroup before entering a dangerous building or cave. If the party splits to loot, mine, or scout, players who move away should not assume that the aura still applies. Treat proximity as a live condition rather than a permanent party-wide status.

Build and coordination advice
- Agree on one support character early instead of having every player spend initial points on the same role without a plan.
- Tell the team when the support player is leaving the group for crafting, storage, or a solo objective.
- Use the aura where several players are exposed at once: clearing a structure, defending a position, or moving through a high-risk area.
- Do not promise a precise bonus in voice chat unless the current game build displays that value to you; the cited perk description does not provide verified rank numbers.
Method 2: Use food and drinks correctly
Food and drinks can create positive or negative status effects, but the documented behavior is for the player who uses the item. Eating or drinking something and handing an identical item to a teammate are not the same as transferring your active effect.
How teammates should use consumables
- Identify which player needs the effect.
- Give that player the food or drink, or place it where they can take it from the shared inventory arrangement your group uses.
- Have the intended recipient consume it.
- Check that player’s status-effect display to confirm the effect and its remaining duration.
Status effects can be temporary or permanent and may influence attributes such as health, stamina, strength, damage resistance, or speed. Multiple effects can be active at once, while duration and stacking behavior depend on the specific effect. Because the effect rules are item-specific, do not treat one drink or meal as a universal team buff.
What consumables cannot reliably do
- Consuming an item yourself does not document a transfer of its active effect to a nearby teammate.
- Dropping an item at another player’s feet does not activate it for that player; they still need to use it.
- A support perk and a consumable are separate systems. A teammate can benefit from Charismatic Nature while also using a personal food or drink effect, subject to the game’s stacking rules.
Method 3: Apply a buff with the administrator console
If you administer the server and intentionally use commands, the console command for targeting another player is:
Rank #3
- Unlimited hours of gameplay
- Explore - Huge, unique and rich environments, offering the freedom to play the game however you want
- Craft - craft and repair weapons, clothes, armour, tools, vehicles, and more
- Build - Take over a ruin, or build from the ground-up. Design your fortress to include traps and defensive positions to survive the undead
- Cooperate or Compete - Includes two player split screen mode, with support for up to 4 players online, in Player versus Player, co-op survival, or co-op creative modes
buffplayer <name / entity id / steam id> <buff name>
The command reference describes this as applying a named buff to the selected player. It is not an ordinary survivor action: you need the permissions required to run administrative commands on that server.
Find the player identifier
- Open the in-game console using the key configured for your platform and keyboard layout.
- Run
lpito list player information and find the relevant player name or ID. - Copy the identifier exactly as the server reports it. Depending on the command syntax and your server setup, this can be the player’s name, entity ID, or Steam ID.
Choose a valid buff name
The command requires the game’s internal buff name, not necessarily the label shown in a menu. Use the game’s buffs.xml file as the authoritative list of valid buff names for that installation. This matters on modded servers, where custom entries or changed names may differ from a vanilla reference.
Run and verify the command
- Confirm that you have the intended player identifier from
lpi. - Confirm the exact buff name in
buffs.xml. - Enter
buffplayer, the identifier, and the buff name in that order. - Have the target player check the status-effect display and report whether the effect appeared.
- If it did not appear, review spelling, identifier type, permissions, and whether the buff exists in the current server files.
Command behavior, permissions, and available names can change after patches or with overhaul mods. Never assume a command copied from a different build will have the same result on your server.

- Create a world or join an existing one.
- Set the world’s visibility to the option your group needs, such as Friends Only or Public.
- Confirm that every intended teammate can connect before spending progression points around a support plan.
Day 2: Assign the support character
Choose one player to prioritize Intellect and Charismatic Nature. This is a role recommendation based on the perk’s documented teammate-support function, not a universal claim that one build is optimal for every group, difficulty, or mod.
Day 3: Test positioning in a safe area
Have the support player stand with the group while everyone checks the status display or other visible feedback available in the current build. Walk a short distance away, regroup, and note when the game no longer shows the expected nearby support. Do not convert that informal observation into a published radius value; the documented source does not verify one.

Day 4: Organize personal consumables
Put food and drinks in each player’s own inventory or an agreed team supply container. The player who needs an effect should consume the item and verify it personally. This avoids assuming that a teammate’s active food or drink status transfers across the party.
Day 5: Practice group movement
Run a short expedition with the support player in the center of the formation. Before splitting to loot or gather resources, tell the team that players outside the nearby area may no longer receive the aura. Regroup before a difficult encounter.

Day 6: Prepare an administrator procedure if you host
- Verify that the server account has command permissions.
- Run
lpiand record how the server identifies each player. - Locate the current
buffs.xmlfile and confirm the exact internal name of any buff you intend to use. - Test
buffplayer <name / entity id / steam id> <buff name>with willing players, then check the target’s status display.
Day 7: Use the right tool for the situation
For regular play, keep the Charismatic Nature character near the party. Use personal consumables when one player needs an item effect. Reserve buffplayer for deliberate server administration, testing, events, or recovery tasks where the host has chosen to use commands.

Troubleshooting when a teammate is not buffed
The perk appears to do nothing
- Check that the support character actually unlocked Charismatic Nature in the Intellect tree.
- Bring the group together; the effect is documented for nearby teammates, not for every player in the world.
- Check whether a player left the support area during combat, looting, or travel.
- Verify that the server is running the expected vanilla rules rather than an overhaul or custom perk system.
A food or drink effect is missing
- Confirm that the intended recipient consumed the item rather than only receiving it in trade.
- Check the recipient’s status-effect display for the effect and remaining time.
- Account for item-specific negative effects, durations, and stacking behavior.
buffplayer returns an error or has no visible result
- Confirm administrative permission on the current server.
- Run
lpiagain and use the exact name or ID it reports. - Check the spelling and capitalization of the buff name against the current
buffs.xml. - Make sure the command is being run on the server instance that owns the player session.
- Consider whether a mod changed the buff definition, removed it, or replaced the command behavior.
Version, platform, and mod caveats
The documented behavior here applies to vanilla multiplayer and the administrator command reference described above. Perk names, effects, command permissions, and internal buff names can change with game updates. Modded servers may add, remove, or rename effects. The available documentation does not verify a current platform-by-platform difference, an exact Charismatic Nature radius, or numeric bonuses for each rank, so those details should be checked in the build and server configuration you are actually using.
If your group needs a guaranteed numeric effect, use the values displayed by the current game or mod files rather than relying on an old post. For ordinary cooperative play, the reliable rule is proximity: keep the Intellect support player with the teammates who need the aura.
