What you need before connecting
FTP (File Transfer Protocol) lets an FTP client upload, download, and modify files on a remote server. SFTP performs file transfer through SSH and is generally the better choice when your host offers it. The Minecraft game client does not provide these credentials; they come from the server host’s control panel.
- A Minecraft server with FTP or SFTP access enabled.
- The host or server address shown in the hosting panel.
- An FTP/SFTP username and password, or an SSH key if the host uses key authentication.
- The protocol and port shown by the host.
- An FTP/SFTP client such as the free FileZilla Client. Download the Client edition, not FileZilla Server.
- The files you intend to transfer, such as a world folder, plugin JAR, mod, configuration file, or modpack archive.
Do not assume that the login used for the hosting panel is also the FTP login. Some providers issue a separate file-transfer username or require you to create one.

FTP and SFTP connection details
Record every value exactly as the panel displays it. Plain FTP commonly uses port 21, but the panel’s value takes precedence. SFTP may use a different, nonstandard port. Never substitute the Minecraft gameplay port for the file-transfer port.
| Field | What to enter | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Protocol | FTP or SFTP | Choose SFTP when the host offers it; do not select a different protocol merely because its default port is familiar. |
| Host | The FTP/SFTP hostname or address from the panel | Use the file-transfer host, which can differ from the address players use to connect. |
| Username | The FTP/SFTP account name | It may differ from your control-panel username. |
| Password or key | The password or private-key method specified by the host | Do not paste your Minecraft account password unless the host explicitly says it is the file-transfer password. |
| Port | The number shown beside FTP or SFTP in the panel | Port 21 is common for plain FTP; SFTP providers may specify another port. |
1. Stop the server or protect your files
Before replacing a live world, stop the server through the hosting panel or make a backup using the panel’s backup control. A running server can write region, player, and level files while you are replacing them, leaving a mixed or corrupted world. Backup and restart controls vary by provider, so follow the labels and policy in your own panel.
For a plugin, mod, or configuration change, check the server software’s normal maintenance procedure. If the panel offers a scheduled backup, wait for it to complete before beginning the transfer. Keep the original local copy until the new files have been tested.
2. Find FTP or SFTP access in the hosting panel
Open the Minecraft server’s management panel and look for labels such as FTP File Access, SFTP Details, or Connect to SFTP. Some panels place the details under a settings, access, or file-management page. Copy the host, username, protocol, port, and password or download the required key.
If you cannot find a password, look for a reset or create-credentials control. A reset can invalidate an older client profile, so update the saved connection in FileZilla afterward. Ask the host’s support team which account has permission to write to the server if several file-transfer accounts are listed.
3. Install and open FileZilla Client
Install the FileZilla Client on your computer. The Client is the application that connects to a remote server; FileZilla Server is a different product for hosting an FTP service from your own computer.
For a one-time transfer, the Quickconnect bar is sufficient. If you will manage the server repeatedly, open File > Site Manager and create a saved entry. Site Manager lets you preserve the host, protocol, port, and username instead of retyping them for every transfer. Store saved passwords only on a computer you control, and use the host’s recommended key-storage method when SFTP uses keys.
4. Configure the connection
Quickconnect
- Open FileZilla Client.
- Enter the host, username, password, and port from the panel in the Quickconnect fields.
- Choose the protocol through the appropriate connection method. If the panel specifies SFTP, use an SFTP connection rather than plain FTP.
- Select Quickconnect.
If the Quickconnect bar does not expose the protocol you need, use Site Manager, where you can explicitly select FTP or SFTP and set the host’s port.
Site Manager
- Open File > Site Manager and choose New site.
- Set the protocol to the exact option shown by your provider.
- Enter the host and port exactly as displayed in the panel.
- Enter the FTP/SFTP username and choose the password or key-logon method required by the host.
- Save the entry and select Connect.
Do not force port 21 when the panel specifies another number. A connection can fail even when the username and password are correct if the protocol and port do not match.
5. Verify the first connection
On the first SFTP connection, FileZilla may show a host-key prompt. Inspect the hostname and the displayed server identity. Select the option to trust or remember the key only when it corresponds to the server you intended to reach. If the identity is unexpected, cancel the connection and confirm the host details with the provider instead of choosing “Always trust.”

Apply the same rule: verify the host and certificate information before accepting a permanent trust choice. A prompt that appears after the provider has changed infrastructure may be legitimate, but confirm the change through the provider’s support channel.
6. Understand FileZilla’s two panes
FileZilla displays your computer’s files in the local pane and the Minecraft server’s files in the remote pane. Navigate the local pane to the file or folder you want to send. In the remote pane, open the destination directory before starting the upload.
Dragging a selected file or folder from the local pane to the remote pane starts the transfer. You can also right-click a selection and choose Upload. The lower transfer area records queued, successful, failed, and skipped items. Keep it visible until the queue shows that the intended files completed.
Do not assume that the directory shown immediately after login is the server root. Some hosts place you directly in the server directory; others require you to open a named subdirectory. Use the existing files and folders as clues, but ask the host if the layout is unclear.
7. Uploading a Minecraft world
Prepare the world
Stop the server before replacing its active world. A world is normally a folder containing files such as region data, player data, and level metadata. If you received the world as a ZIP file, extract it locally first unless your server software or host specifically supports importing an archive.
Check whether the extracted package contains an extra outer folder. The remote server should receive the actual world folder, not a wrapper folder that contains the world one level deeper. Open the local folder and look for the world’s own files before uploading.

- The classic UNO card game builds fun on game night with a Minecraft theme.
- UNO Minecraft features a deck and storage tin decorated with graphics from the popular video game.
- Players match colors and numbers to the card on top of the discard pile as in the classic game.
- The Creeper card unique to this deck forces other players to draw 3 cards.
- Makes a great gift for kid, teen, adult and family game nights with 2 to 10 players ages 7 years and older, especially Minecraft and video game fans.
Choose the destination
Many Minecraft server layouts use /world for the primary world. Other server software, level names, or hosting layouts can use a different directory. Open the server directory and identify the world folder used by that installation. If the server configuration names a different level, follow that setting rather than blindly replacing /world.
Transfer and activate it
- With the server stopped or a verified backup completed, rename the existing world folder if you may need to roll back.
- Open the remote server directory in FileZilla.
- Drag the prepared world folder into the remote pane.
- Watch the transfer queue until every file is successful.
- Confirm that the folder is in the intended location and is not nested one level too deeply.
- Start the server through the panel and watch its console for world-loading errors.
World uploads can contain thousands of files. Do not close FileZilla merely because the progress bar appears nearly complete; wait for the queue to finish and investigate any failed items.

8. Uploading plugins
For many server implementations, plugin JAR files belong in /plugins. Open that directory in the remote pane and upload the JAR file supplied by the plugin’s developer. Keep each plugin’s required dependencies and configuration files together according to its documentation.
Plugins commonly require a server restart before they are enabled. After the upload queue is clear, use the panel’s restart control, or stop and start the server if that is the panel’s documented procedure. Check the console after startup for an enable message, a dependency error, or a version incompatibility.
If a plugin generated a configuration folder during an earlier installation, do not overwrite it casually. Download a backup of the existing configuration before replacing files, especially when you are changing only the plugin JAR.
9. Uploading mods and modpacks
Mod files commonly belong in /mods, but the exact directory and required loader depend on the server software. Upload the mod files to the directory used by that installation, and ensure the server is running the matching loader and Minecraft version.
A modpack may contain many files and folders. If the host’s web file manager rejects folders or imposes a size limit, use FTP/SFTP instead. Preserve the package’s directory structure; uploading only a few visible files can omit libraries, configuration, or required metadata.
Restart according to the mod loader’s normal procedure after the transfer. If the server fails to start, inspect the console and restore the backup rather than repeatedly uploading files over the failed installation.

10. Uploading configuration and other files
Configuration files such as server.properties normally live in the main server directory, alongside the server’s other top-level files. Before editing or replacing one, download the current version so you can restore it if a setting prevents startup.

11. When the web file manager cannot upload a folder
Many hosting panels provide a browser-based file manager, but some reject directory uploads or limit the size of a single web upload. Compressing a directory first can work when the panel supports archive extraction: create a ZIP locally, upload the archive, extract it in the server directory, and remove the archive after confirming the files are in the correct place.
For large worlds, modpacks, or directories containing many files, FTP/SFTP is usually the practical route because it transfers the directory tree directly and provides a queue with individual success and failure states. If the panel has a stated upload limit, do not split files arbitrarily; use the host’s FTP/SFTP access or ask support for the approved large-transfer method.
12. Verify the upload and restart safely
- Wait for the FileZilla transfer queue to show no failed or skipped files.
- Refresh the remote directory and confirm the expected filename, folder, and approximate contents.
- Check that the files are in the server directory used by the software, not merely somewhere in the account.
- Restart the server when the file type requires it, particularly after uploading plugins.
- Read the startup console for missing dependencies, permission errors, malformed configuration, or a world that cannot be loaded.
- Join the server or inspect its status only after startup completes.
An upload that appears complete but produces no change usually means the files went to the wrong directory, some queue items failed, or the server has not been restarted. Check those three conditions before transferring the files again.

FTP/SFTP troubleshooting
Authentication failed
Recheck the host, protocol, username, password or key, and port character by character. Confirm that you are using the FTP/SFTP username rather than the panel username. If you recently reset credentials, replace the saved password in Site Manager. A copied password can also contain an accidental leading or trailing space.
Connection timed out
Verify the file-transfer host and port shown in the panel. Do not enter the Minecraft gameplay port. A timeout can also occur when the server is offline, the provider restricts access by IP address, or the selected protocol does not match the service. Check the panel’s access instructions before changing firewall settings.
Unknown host key or certificate
Cancel the trust prompt if the hostname is not the server you intended to reach. Compare the address with the panel and confirm any provider infrastructure change through official support. Choose a permanent trust option only after that check.
Best Value
Files upload but the server does not change
Refresh the remote directory and inspect the transfer queue for failed or skipped items. Confirm the destination path, including capitalization and folder nesting. Plugins generally need a restart, while a world replacement must be performed while the server is stopped. Read the startup console for errors before trying another upload.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesA folder upload is blocked
Compress the folder and extract it through the panel if that feature is available, or connect with FTP/SFTP. This is especially important for worlds and modpacks that exceed browser-upload limits.
The connection works but uploads are denied
The account may have read-only permissions or may be restricted to a particular directory. Verify that the panel created a writable FTP/SFTP account and that you are inside the permitted server path. Contact the host if the account should have write access but FileZilla reports permission errors.
How to choose a host for reliable file transfers
If you are selecting a Minecraft host, evaluate file management before buying. The useful questions are operational rather than cosmetic:
- Does the host offer SFTP as well as plain FTP?
- Where are the credentials displayed, and can you reset them without opening a support ticket?
- Does the web file manager accept directories and large files, or will you need FTP/SFTP for every substantial transfer?
- Can you create and restore backups before replacing worlds?
- Does the panel provide clear stop, start, and restart controls?
- Can support help with large world or modpack transfers and permission errors?
A host that clearly separates the game port from the FTP/SFTP port and exposes an easy backup workflow reduces the most common transfer mistakes.
Quick upload checklist
- Back up the server or stop it before replacing a world or live configuration.
- Copy the exact FTP/SFTP host, username, protocol, password or key, and port from the panel.
- Use FileZilla Client, not FileZilla Server.
- Prefer SFTP when it is offered, and accept the first host-key prompt only after verifying the server identity.
- Open the intended remote directory: commonly
/world,/plugins, or/mods, depending on the installation. - Drag files or folders from the local pane to the remote pane.
- Wait for the queue to report successful transfers and investigate every failure.
- Restart when required, then read the server console for errors.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use the Minecraft game port for FTP?
No. The FTP/SFTP service has its own host and port. Port 21 is common for plain FTP, while SFTP may use another port shown in the hosting panel.
Why is my FTP username different from my panel username?
Hosts often issue a separate FTP/SFTP account. Use the credentials under FTP File Access or SFTP Details rather than assuming the panel login will work.
Can I upload a whole world folder from a browser file manager?
Some web managers reject folders or impose size limits. Compress the folder and extract it if the panel supports that workflow, or use FTP/SFTP for the directory transfer.
Do plugins work immediately after upload?
Plugins commonly require a server restart. Wait for the transfer queue to finish, restart through the panel, and check the startup console for errors.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
What should I do if a first-connection security prompt looks wrong?
Cancel it, compare the hostname with the panel, and verify the expected server identity with the provider. Do not permanently trust an unrecognized host key or certificate.
