A balanced Onmyoji Arena lineup assigns all five positions—solo top, mid, jungle, bottom-lane marksman and bottom-lane support—a job that serves one clear win condition. Start with the damage source you intend to protect or enable, then add jungle tempo, a durable frontline, dependable crowd control and a support whose utility answers the opposing threat. The six role filters (Mage, Samurai, Ninja, Marksman, Tank and Support) help you browse candidates, but a role label does not guarantee a lane assignment.
There is no authoritative permanent “best five” or universal win-rate list. A ranked-ready team is the one whose players can execute its engage, peel, wave-clear and objective plan on the current patch.

The five positions and the jobs they must cover
Drafting becomes easier when you evaluate jobs before names. Every composition has five slots, but the exact shikigami in those slots can change with the patch, matchup and player skill.
| Position | Primary responsibilities | Questions before locking |
|---|---|---|
| Solo top lane | Hold a long lane, absorb pressure, provide frontline presence or side-lane threat, and join fights at the right timing. | Can this pick survive ranged harassment, clear safely and either start fights or create pressure elsewhere? |
| Mid lane | Clear waves, contest rotations, supply burst or sustained area damage, and arrive first at skirmishes when possible. | Does the pick have safe wave clear and control that remains useful when opponents buy defenses? |
| Jungle | Set the team’s tempo, threaten lanes, secure objectives and recover after an unsuccessful attack. | How quickly can it clear, move between camps and contest objectives without sacrificing too much health or time? |
| Bottom marksman | Provide dependable extended-fight damage and threaten structures or durable targets. | What protects this damage source, and can it keep attacking when enemies dive? |
| Bottom support | Protect the marksman, establish or deny vision and engage, peel, heal, shield or buff according to the draft. | Does the kit answer the enemy’s threat, and can its control be relied on under pressure? |
The role browser’s six filters—Mage, Samurai, Ninja, Marksman, Tank and Support—are useful starting points, not promises about where a character belongs. A Tank may lack reliable initiation, while a durable Samurai or fighter may be the more practical solo frontliner. Confirm lane suitability in the current patch notes and in your own match experience.

What “balanced” means in an actual match
Balance is functional coverage, not an equal distribution of damage icons. Before choosing individual shikigami, check whether the five picks collectively answer six questions.
Who stands in front?
At least one member must be able to occupy space while allies deal damage. Look at effective health, resistances, shields, displacement immunity and the ability to remain present after using an engage tool. A nominal Tank that disappears before the fight develops is less valuable than a durable Samurai or fighter who can reliably stay between opponents and the carry.
How does the team start—or stop—a fight?
One pick should offer a dependable way to begin a favorable engagement, and another tool should interrupt a dive or protect the primary damage dealer. Compare cast range, area of effect, reliability against mobile targets and the opponent’s ability to cleanse, dodge or interrupt the control. A composition with five threatening damage profiles but no way to force or disengage a fight is fragile.

Extended fights need a damage source that continues working after the first rotation of abilities. Usually this is the bottom marksman, although a sustained-damage Mage can fill part of the job. Hakuro’s official balance notes describe her as a core damage dealer whose survivability and mid-to-late damage were insufficient before January 2025 improvements to her slow and Ability 3 damage. If you select a similarly fragile carry, the rest of the draft must buy her time to attack.
Can the lanes clear and rotate?
Wave clear is a strategic resource. A mid or solo pick that cannot safely remove a wave gives the opponent first access to river fights and objectives. Check whether the skill pattern handles ranged harassment, recall pressure and side-lane assignments without requiring reckless positioning.
Does the jungle create tempo?
The jungler determines how often your team can make the first play. The March 2025 update added Hunt Reserve: users of the jungle knife accumulate stacks over time, reducing the punishment for failed attacks. Jungle planning therefore includes recovery as well as first-gank speed. A pick that loses one attempt but can quickly resume farming may be more valuable than a specialist whose entire plan collapses after a miss.

What kind of support is this draft asking for?
Choose the support function deliberately: healing for attrition, shielding for burst windows, buffs for a scaling carry, initiation for a pick composition, or counter-engage against divers. The August 9, 2024 support redesign was intended to give support shikigami more specialized identities rather than treating every one as a generic ranged buffer. Official developers summarized the goal as: “We aim to provide Support shikigami with more options in the early to mid game to enhance their unique characteristics.”
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow to assemble the five picks
Use this sequence in draft or when building a preset team. It prevents a late discovery that the lineup has damage but no way to deliver it.
- Lock the win condition. Decide how the team wins fights and closes the game. A front-to-back plan protects a sustained carry while the frontline advances. A pick-and-burst plan relies on vision, long-range control and quick numbers advantages. A dive plan sends multiple durable or mobile characters onto the enemy backline. An objective-control plan wins through superior zone control and secure tools around major targets. Write the plan in one sentence before choosing the final three slots.
- Secure the least-flexible damage and tempo jobs. Select the bottom marksman or another reliable sustained source, then choose a jungler that can create pressure without abandoning its economy. Protect the damage source with a support whose utility matches the expected threat rather than automatically selecting the most familiar character.
- Add a frontline and a reliable control tool. Fill solo top with a Tank, Samurai or durable fighter that can survive the lane. Confirm that at least one member can start a fight and that a separate spell, displacement or body-blocking tool can peel when the enemy reaches your carry. If the same character must perform both tasks, examine cooldowns and whether using the engage leaves the backline exposed.
- Audit damage and defenses. Check the physical-versus-magic split. If every meaningful attack is one type, opponents can build directly against it. Also examine sustained versus burst: burst may win a pick but fail against durable targets, while only sustained damage can struggle to finish a mobile backline. Finally, ask whether the team has enough durability for the current patch’s damage environment.
- Test lane and execution practicality. A theoretically perfect composition fails if its players cannot perform the assigned jobs. Confirm wave-clear patterns, recall timings, jungle routes and support positioning in normal matches. Treat the role filter as a shortlist, then make the final decision from lane suitability, matchup and the current balance notes.
Choosing each lane around the plan
Solo top: stability first, side pressure second
The solo lane has the longest exposure to pressure, so survivability and wave control come before highlight-reel damage. A good pick can absorb a gank, clear under its tower and still contribute when the team groups. If the composition already has initiation from support or jungle, solo top can emphasize side-lane threat or sustained frontline presence. If nobody else can start a fight, prioritize a pick with reliable access and enough durability to remain in the middle of the enemy formation.
Do not equate the Tank label with guaranteed initiation. Official support discussions have noted that some characters intended to initiate or protect lacked the necessary tools. Evaluate the actual range, control duration and ability to survive the return damage.
Mid: wave priority and damage shape
Mid should be able to remove the wave without donating health, then move first or make the opponent pay for leaving. Burst Mages fit pick plans; area-control or sustained-damage Mages fit front-to-back and objective plans. If the enemy has durable frontliners, include a way to damage them over time rather than relying only on a single spell rotation.

Jungle: route, recovery and objective access
Compare clear speed, mobility, crowd control, smite or secure reliability and the ability to contest an objective after a failed gank. Hunt Reserve, introduced in March 2025 for jungle-knife users, makes stack accumulation and recovery part of the value calculation. A jungler should have a fallback route: when a lane cannot be ganked, it should convert the time into camps, vision, an invade or an objective setup instead of wandering.

Bottom marksman: damage that survives contact
Choose the marksman according to the protection available. A short-range carry needs body-blocking, shields, healing or hard peel. A long-range carry may need less direct protection but still requires someone to deny flankers. Evaluate the damage curve, attack range, ability to hit durable targets and how much damage is lost while repositioning. Hakuro’s pre-buff limitations illustrate why a high-damage label is not enough: survivability and mid-to-late output determine whether the damage arrives in a real team fight.
Bottom support: match utility to the enemy
Healing supports reward extended trades and protect against attrition. Shield or buff supports amplify a carry’s decisive window. Engage supports create the first favorable fight, while counter-engage supports wait for a dive and turn it around. Enmusubi is a useful example of the last two considerations: official notes describe short casting range and low mid-game durability, followed by increased shields and late-game control. She can suit a close-range protection or control plan, but only when the player accepts that her value requires fighting near the enemy.
Compare two candidate lineups instead of guessing
When two five-shikigami combinations look viable, score both on the same axes. A simple five-point scale is enough; the purpose is to expose a missing job, not to manufacture a precise tier list.

| Frontline reliability | Effective health, resistances, shields, uptime and ability to remain present after engaging. | The only “frontliner” must retreat immediately after using one cooldown. |
| Engage and peel | Range, crowd-control reliability, interruption, displacement and carry-protection tools. | The team can damage enemies but cannot start a fight or stop a dive. |
| Damage profile | Sustained versus burst, physical versus magic, and performance against durable targets. | Opponents can counter the entire damage budget with one defensive direction. |
| Lane stability | Wave clear, resistance to ranged harassment, recall pressure and rotation speed. | One lost wave permanently gives the opponent first move. |
| Objective and jungle tempo | Clear speed, mobility, contest tools and recovery after a failed gank. | A missed play leaves the jungler or lanes with no productive fallback. |
| Carry safety | Healing, shields, displacement, body-blocking and threat that forces enemies away. | The marksman must stand alone whenever the frontline engages. |
| Execution fit | Whether the player can consistently perform the character’s job under pressure. | The lineup depends on a combo or timing the player rarely lands. |
Patch-aware examples from current balance directions
Enmusubi for close protection
Her short casting range and weak mid-game durability make positioning central. The later shield and late-game-control improvements increase her value when the draft intends to fight in close formation. She is not a universal answer for a team that needs long-range disengage.
Hakuro for sustained physical damage
Hakuro’s official notes identify her as a core damage dealer and cite limited survivability and insufficient mid-to-late damage before January 2025 buffs to her slow and Mind’s Eye. Pairing her with reliable peel or a durable frontline is a structural requirement, not an optional luxury.
Higanbana for area pressure
The May 2025 notes describe Higanbana as a sustained-damage Mage and increase her Flower Seal damage. She can add persistent area pressure to an objective or front-to-back plan, but the rest of the composition still needs a physical damage source or another way to prevent defensive itemization from becoming too efficient.

Samurai X as a patch-sensitive frontliner
The same May 2025 update reduces his HP growth, damage sharing, armor boost and slow immunity after excessive tankiness. Treat him as a balance-sensitive frontline option: reassess his ability to absorb and start fights whenever those values change instead of assuming a previous season’s reputation remains accurate.
Kusa for healing and control
May 2025 changes improve Kusa’s healing, reduce mana costs and lengthen her initial immobilization. Those adjustments support a healing-and-control support archetype, especially when the marksman benefits from longer fights and the team needs an additional way to hold a target.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to make the composition ranked-ready
Ranked success depends on repeatability more than theoretical ceiling. Before committing a lineup, run a short checklist:
- Each player can state the team’s win condition and their own first objective.
- The jungler and solo laner have a practiced opening route and a fallback when the first play fails.
- The support knows whether to stand beside the carry, ahead of the team or behind it waiting for counter-engage.
- The marksman has a defined safe position for the first major fight.
- The team has at least one answer to a dive and one method of forcing an enemy out of a zone.
- Damage is not concentrated entirely in one type unless the draft intentionally wins through a different advantage.
- Every player has a backup pick for bans, poor matchups or a patch change.
Practice the composition in the same order you will use it in ranked: establish the first wave, contest the first jungle window, decide who moves to the first objective and rehearse the disengage when the initial engage fails. This reveals execution gaps that a lobby screen cannot show.
Common drafting mistakes and their fixes
Picking five strong solo characters
Individual strength does not supply a frontline, peel or objective plan. Fix it by assigning one explicit job to every slot before comparing power levels.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Stacking only burst
Burst can win an isolated pick but often fails when the enemy survives the first rotation. Add sustained damage or a control plan that creates repeated windows.
Building only one damage type
When itemization allows direct resistance, a single-type lineup loses efficiency. Preserve at least one credible alternate damage source or a strategy that bypasses the problem through objectives and control.
Choosing initiation without protection
A spectacular engage is worthless if the carry dies while the frontliner is away. Pair the initiator with peel, displacement, shields, healing or enough threat to keep divers out.

Ignoring patch context
The March 28, 2025 season update lists HP Growth, Armor Growth and Magic Resist Growth at 1.2 and explains that excessive burst was shortening survival time and shrinking reaction windows. That systemic environment changes how much durability and reaction time a composition needs. Recheck official notes after major updates rather than carrying an old five-pick formula forward.
