You can build a capable gaming setup without buying a console by starting with devices and accessories you already own. Try local games on an existing computer first; if it cannot run the games you want, check cloud gaming on a compatible phone, tablet, computer or TV. If you already have a gaming PC at home, stream from it to another screen. Each route depends on the game, device, region and connection, so verify those before paying for hardware or a subscription.
Start with the hardware you already have
Before shopping, make a list of your computer, phone, tablet, TV, controller and network equipment. Check whether your TV supports the relevant gaming app, and whether a controller you own connects to your intended device over USB or Bluetooth.

If you want to play on a computer, look up the requirements for each specific game and compare them with that machine. An older or less demanding game may run locally even if the computer is not marketed as a gaming PC. There is no reliable general-purpose “gaming” label that can tell you whether a particular title will run well.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTry local play first if your device meets the game’s requirements. That avoids cloud-service fees and streaming-related network demands. Performance depends on the game and hardware; no particular game or device performance has been tested here.

Choose between local play, cloud gaming and home streaming
| Option | Where the game runs | What you need | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local play | On your existing computer | A computer that meets the specific game’s requirements | Older or lighter games may work; check each title rather than assuming all games will run. |
| Cloud gaming | On a remote service’s hardware | A supported device, eligible game and account or plan, plus a sufficiently fast and stable connection | Catalogs, device support, regional availability and plan features vary. A subscription does not necessarily include every game. |
| Steam Remote Play or Steam Link | On a gaming PC you already have at home | A capable host PC and a supported receiving device | The host still has to run the game and be available. This streams from your own PC; it does not replace it. |
Check whether cloud gaming fits your games and devices
Cloud gaming uses your device as the screen and input client while the game runs remotely. That can make an existing phone, tablet, computer or supported TV useful for games its own hardware could not run. It does not guarantee access to a particular game: check the exact title, your device, the service’s availability in your region and the applicable plan before subscribing.
GeForce NOW
NVIDIA says GeForce NOW requires you to own or purchase supported games from the relevant stores, although hundreds of free-to-play games are also supported. A subscription should not be treated as a general license to every game in the catalog. Review the supported game list and system requirements for your specific device at NVIDIA’s GeForce NOW system requirements.

Xbox Cloud Gaming
Xbox Cloud Gaming offers selected free-to-play games and most Game Pass library titles through the cloud, as well as selected cloud-playable games that you own or buy. The catalog and features are not universal: Xbox says, “Game titles, number, features, and availability vary over time, by region, XBOX Game Pass plan, and platform.” Check the current Xbox Cloud Gaming information for your location and device.

Services support different devices and features, and compatibility can depend on the model or platform. Check the service’s current device guidance for your exact TV, phone, tablet or computer; do not assume that a TV with internet access can run a cloud gaming app or that every phone supports the same controls.

Test your connection where you plan to play
Run a connection test in the room where you will actually play. A result beside the router may not reflect the speed or stability in another room. Speed is only one consideration: latency and connection stability also affect how responsive a streamed game feels.
GeForce NOW network guidance
NVIDIA’s current system-requirements page, accessed in 2026, lists these minimum bandwidth figures for specific streaming targets. They are service guidance, not a guarantee of performance on your connection.
Rank #4
| Streaming target | Listed bandwidth |
|---|---|
| HD at up to 60 FPS | 15 Mbps |
| FHD at 60 FPS | 25 Mbps |
| QHD or UW QHD at 120 FPS | 35 Mbps |
| 4K at 120 FPS | 45 Mbps |
| QHD or FHD at 240 or 360 FPS | 55 Mbps |
| 5K at 120 FPS | 65 Mbps |
NVIDIA recommends wired Ethernet or a router with 5 GHz Wi-Fi, and latency below 80 ms to an NVIDIA data center. Its page states: “We recommend a hardwired Ethernet connection, or a router with a 5 GHz WiFi connection.” See the GeForce NOW requirements for current guidance.
Xbox Cloud Gaming network guidance
Xbox lists 10 Mbps as a minimum connection and notes that some devices may need 20 Mbps for best quality. It recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi. These are Xbox’s service guidelines, not a prediction of the quality you will get at home; check its current cloud gaming page.

Use a gaming PC you already own as the host
If a gaming PC at home can run the game, Steam Remote Play or Steam Link can stream it to another device or screen. The Steam Link page describes streaming games from the Steam Library on a PC to a TV in the home. This can be useful when you want to play on a different screen without buying another console or streaming box. It still depends on the host PC being capable of running the game and available while you play. See Steam Remote Play.
Spend only on what is actually missing
- Inventory your setup. Note every device and controller you can use, and check whether the target TV supports the service you want.
- Check the game. For local play, compare the game’s requirements with your computer. For cloud play, check the service catalog, your account or plan, your region and the exact device.
- Test the network at the play location. Compare the result with the chosen service’s guidance, and consider latency and stability as well as download speed.
- Try a controller you already have. If you need one, check compatibility for the specific service and device. NVIDIA lists Microsoft Xbox and Sony PS5 DualSense and DualShock 4 controllers as supported gamepads on applicable devices; that does not establish support on every TV or phone.
- Buy an accessory only to solve a demonstrated problem. A compatible controller may be useful if you lack one. Consider a wired connection or router change only if testing shows your current network is inadequate.
Account for recurring costs and game ownership
Local play on a computer you already own may avoid a new hardware purchase, while cloud gaming can introduce a recurring subscription cost. Whether that is worthwhile depends on the games you want, what you already own, which service supports them in your region and the plan’s current terms. Verify those details before paying; neither a service subscription nor a cloud catalog should be assumed to include every game you want.
