How to Build a Small Fighting Game Prototype in Six Months

Six months is a plausible window for a focused fighting-game prototype—not a full commercial fighter. Build the combat loop first, test it locally, and expand only when new content answers a real design question.

Six months can be enough to build a fighting-game prototype if the goal is to prove a compact, playable combat loop—not to ship a complete commercial fighter. Prioritize responsive controls, readable attacks and hit reactions, and repeatable local playtests. Keep online play and roster growth out of the minimum plan unless one of those is the design question the prototype must answer.

Decide what the prototype must prove

A prototype is a test of an idea, not a smaller edition of the finished game. Before choosing characters, stages, or presentation details, write down the question the build needs to answer. It might be whether movement and spacing feel interesting, whether attacks and defense are understandable, or whether two players can read and respond to each other in a match.

Godot’s production guidance recommends iterating on the core functions before moving on and emphasizes smooth controls and feedback. It also notes a fighting-game-specific wrinkle: animation may need attention early, even when other art and code can remain rough. In this genre, animation helps players judge timing and impact; a placeholder can be visually simple, but it still needs to communicate what is happening.

Turn the question into a playable success condition. For example: two people can start a local match, move, attack, defend, recognize when a hit lands, recover, and play another round without someone explaining what the game meant to do. This is a proposed test, not a universal definition of a successful prototype. The right condition depends on the question you chose.

Logitech G F310 Wired Gamepad Controller Console - Blue/Black
  • With broad game support, the Logitech Gamepad F310 works with old standbys to today's biggest titles, so it's easy to set up and use with your favorite games.
  • Profiler software allows the gamepad to be programmed to perform keyboard and mouse commands for games without gamepad support.* * Requires software installation.
  • A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on an Xbox 360.
  • The unique floating D-pad rests on four switches-instead of a single pivot point-making it responsive to quick changes in direction.
  • The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.
  • Keep: only the systems needed to reach and evaluate the chosen combat question.
  • Defer: features whose absence will not prevent that test, such as a large roster, elaborate menus, or online matchmaking.
  • Record: what players expected to happen, what they understood, and where the build failed to communicate or respond as intended.

A useful minimum might be one stage and one playable character against a simple training target, particularly for a very small team. A local two-player build can be more informative if the question depends on human opponents. Neither scope is mandatory: choose the smallest setup that can answer the design question.

Keep the scope small enough to finish

“Small” should describe the number of things the prototype needs to prove, not just its roster size. Each extra character or stage consumes time that could otherwise go into tuning, animation, feedback, and playtesting. Add content only when it tests a real design difference.

An Oregon State University EECS project brief offers one bounded reference: its basic goals include two simple stages, two characters, and offline two-player combat; online play, adjustable AI, and rollback networking are stretch goals. That brief is for a 3–4-person group and a three-month project, so it is not evidence that a solo developer can deliver the same scope—or that the same schedule fits every team.

Scope choice What it helps you learn What it costs or risks
Improve an existing fighter or stage Whether the current controls, attacks, defense, spacing, and hit feedback are becoming understandable and enjoyable. Less breadth; repeated testing can reveal that the core loop still needs work.
Add a second character Whether a meaningful difference in play style changes match decisions or exposes weaknesses hidden by the first character. Additional moves and animation to implement, tune, and communicate.
Add a second stage Whether a different setting or layout tests an important design assumption. More environment work; little value if the first stage has not yet enabled useful combat tests.
Add online play Whether networked competition is viable when online play is itself the prototype’s central hypothesis. A substantial technical and production commitment that can distract from proving local combat.

The table describes likely learning value and trade-offs, not measured development hours. If an addition cannot be tied to a question you intend to answer, leave it out of the six-month target.

Use a six-month plan with decision gates

The schedule below is an editorial plan, not a timeline validated by a study or guaranteed by the cited examples. Treat each month as a phase with an exit test: if the test is not met, reduce scope or revise the build rather than carrying unfinished ambitions forward.

Month 1: define the question and de-risk the basics

Choose a 2D or 3D presentation and an engine based on team experience, workflow, target platforms, and any unusual simulation or networking needs. Write a one-page scope statement covering the design question, the smallest playable setup that can answer it, and features explicitly outside the prototype.

Build a crude input-and-movement test before creating a roster or polished assets. The goal is to learn whether the chosen setup can respond in a way worth developing and whether the team can work effectively in the engine. End the month with a short, repeatable test build and a written decision: continue with this setup, change a specific blocking choice, or simplify the intended proof.

Month 2: make a basic fight playable

Implement the minimum interaction loop: movement, attacks, a basic defensive action, health, visible hit reactions, and a way to reset or begin another round. Keep the move set deliberately limited. The point is not to represent every idea for the game, but to make it possible to test whether players can cause, recognize, and respond to combat events.

Use simple visuals where they do not interfere with that test. Make the timing and outcome of an attack clear enough to evaluate, rather than spending the month polishing an interface or building multiple characters. The exit test is a local session in which the core sequence can be played more than once without developer intervention to explain what just happened.

Month 3: make the combat legible

Develop a small move set and tune hit detection, recovery, spacing, and feedback. These are connected: a hit needs to be detected, its impact needs to be understood, and the players need to see when the action can continue. If a move appears to miss, lands without a clear reaction, or leaves players unsure what they can do next, address that before adding breadth.

Use temporary assets where possible, but invest in the animation needed to judge timing and impact. Godot’s production guidance explicitly cautions that fighting games may need animation work early, even when a prototype’s other code and art remain rough. The exit test is not “finished animation”; it is enough clarity for a player to interpret the actions relevant to your design question.

Month 4: playtest and revise

Test with people who play fighting games and people who do not. The first group can help expose problems in combat expectations and interaction; the second can reveal whether the build communicates its actions without genre familiarity. Observe before explaining. Record missed inputs, confusing moments, unclear hit reactions, and strategies that dominate the session.

Look for recurring problems rather than treating every preference as a requirement. If several players misread the same action, inspect its input, animation, hit response, and recovery. If a strategy repeatedly overwhelms other choices, decide whether it exposes a balance issue or a missing counterplay signal. Make changes to the existing loop before expanding the roster.

Month 5: build one representative slice

Improve the presentation of one representative match so it communicates the intended experience more clearly. A second character or stage is useful only if the core loop is stable enough to make the comparison meaningful and the addition tests a specific design question. Otherwise, spend the time on the current character’s readability and the repeatability of the match.

Keep a short list of what the new content is meant to reveal. For a second fighter, that might be whether a contrasting approach changes decisions; for another stage, whether a distinct environment alters an assumption you actually care about. If you cannot name the test, defer the content.

Month 6: stabilize, package, and communicate

Fix blocking problems in the playable loop and package a build that can be launched and played repeatedly. Document the controls, the prototype’s intended test, and known limitations so a player can give useful feedback without a developer narrating every step. Capture the feedback you need in a form the team can compare across sessions.

Do not turn the final month into a last-minute feature race. Online play remains a stretch goal unless it is central to the hypothesis; a stable local build that proves or disproves the intended combat idea is more useful than an unfinished collection of features.

Make controls and simulation an early technical decision

Control feel is not a cosmetic polish task to postpone until the end. Godot’s production guide calls for smooth controls and iteration on core functions. In a 2018 Unreal Engine interview, AOne Games technical director Sebastian Gana described modifying input processing so it ran faster than the engine thread to improve control feel in the commercial game Omen of Sorrow. That is a historical account of one team’s engineering choice, not a prescription for every prototype to alter engine internals.

Gana also described modifying Unreal Engine 4’s main loop to support deterministic physics and simulation for that game. This illustrates how a particular fighting-game production can encounter deep technical requirements; it does not establish that a small local prototype needs those modifications. Start by measuring your own prototype against its intended test. Do not adopt complex architecture merely because a larger production needed it.

During the first months, keep a simple record of input problems players encounter and the conditions under which they occur. Distinguish a control that is unclear to the player from one that the game fails to register as intended. This helps keep tuning focused on observed issues instead of speculative engineering.

Choose an engine for the team and the proof

The available examples do not establish a universal best engine. Godot’s stable documentation shows a small project organized as independent scenes combined by a main scene, a straightforward example of separating parts of a game. AOne Games used Unreal Engine 4 for Omen of Sorrow and described a C++ and Blueprint workflow alongside engine modifications. These are examples of viable approaches in different contexts, not a head-to-head performance comparison.

Decision factor Question to answer
Team familiarity Which engine can the team already use to build and revise a playable test without spending the schedule learning an unfamiliar workflow?
2D or 3D presentation Which option fits the visual format and the team’s ability to create and animate the assets the test needs?
Input and animation workflow Can the team quickly create, inspect, and revise the actions needed to judge combat timing and readability?
Target platform Can the intended prototype be built for the platform on which it needs to be tested?
Simulation or online requirements Does the core hypothesis require a networking or simulation approach that should shape architecture from the beginning?

Choose early and avoid switching engines during the six months unless a specific blocking need outweighs the retraining and migration work. A feature checklist is less useful than proving that your actual team can make and revise the intended build.

Decide whether online play belongs in the prototype

If the question is whether the combat design works, begin with local play and keep online networking outside the minimum milestone. The Oregon State project brief places online play and rollback among stretch goals, which is a useful bounded example of separating core goals from ambitious extras—not a rule that every project should follow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If online competition is the central hypothesis, make that decision in Month 1 rather than treating networking as a late checkbox. AOne Games said it integrated GGPO for Omen of Sorrow and developed matchmaking support in parallel. Gana’s warning from that context is direct: “It’s always important that, if you’re going to be making an online game, you take every precaution to code it with that in mind from the very start.” The quote concerns a production designed to support online play; it is not a claim that all fighting-game prototypes need GGPO or matchmaking.

  • Wired Controller, USB cable: 1.8M.
  • Compatible with Switch (version 3.0.0 or above), Windows, Raspberry Pi devices.

In the same interview, Gana summarized the genre’s demands: “During development, we learned that making a fighting game is a big challenge, one worthy of respect, as it requires a very high level of technical proficiency and attention to detail.” Keep that as a reason to protect the prototype’s focus, not as a reason to overbuild it.

Plan around uncertainty, not a promised deadline

The six-month sequence is a way to order decisions, not evidence that a particular team will finish in that time. The sources provide no validated six-month schedule, engine benchmark, or representative survey of beginner developers. The university brief is an assignment scope, while the Omen of Sorrow interview describes a much larger commercial production.

Available time, prior engine experience, team size, and the demands of 2D versus 3D art all affect what can be completed. Review the scope at the end of each phase. If the build cannot yet answer its primary question, cut optional content; do not preserve the original roster target at the expense of a testable core loop. No cost estimate or minimum hardware specification is established by the sources for this project.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prepare for useful local playtests

A local build is useful only if the people testing it can operate it and you can learn from what happens. A USB game controller is an optional way to try familiar input or local two-player play; no particular model is required or tested here. The more important preparation is to make the controls available to testers and to observe the session without filling in gaps with explanations.

  • Give testers the build and control information needed to start a session.
  • Ask them to play before explaining unclear actions; note where they hesitate or misinterpret the result.
  • Record the specific event, input, or visual cue associated with missed inputs and confusing hit reactions.
  • Include both experienced fighting-game players and people unfamiliar with the genre.
  • After a change, repeat the relevant test to see whether the original problem still occurs.

These practices turn a prototype from a private demonstration into a tool for making a decision. They do not require a large roster, an online service, or a polished presentation.

What to deliver at the end

A useful six-month result is a repeatable playable build plus a clear account of what it demonstrates and what remains unresolved. It may contain one character, one stage, and local play—or an even smaller setup—if that is enough to test the chosen idea. The strongest evidence of progress is not the number of features; it is whether the build lets the team observe and discuss the combat question it set out to answer.
