The four layers
- Telegram adapter: Handles
/start,/add,/list,/remove,/pause, and/check. Inline callback buttons can expose actions such as pause, resume, and remove. - Price-source adapters: One adapter per retailer or marketplace. Each returns a common record containing a stable product key, price, currency, availability, provider timestamp, and diagnostic metadata.
- Persistence: Stores chat IDs, product keys or URLs, target prices, observations, and alert state. SQLite is adequate for a small single-VPS bot; PostgreSQL becomes useful when several workers or instances write concurrently.

What should you decide before writing code?
Choose the price sources and alert semantics before implementing commands. There is no universal retailer API that safely covers every game store, so each provider needs an explicit terms review and a parser or API client that you can maintain.

Use an allowed data source
Prefer an official retailer API, product feed, or licensed aggregator whose terms permit automated retrieval. An HTML page can change its markup, require a login, show a regional price, or block automated requests without warning. If a provider returns a login wall, changes its schema, or withdraws permission, pause affected items rather than silently sending stale prices.
Define what “price” means
Write down whether a target includes sales tax, delivery, activation fees, or only the displayed item price. Keep membership pricing, coupon prices, bundles, pre-orders, and used copies as distinct states. A “cheap” digital edition is not interchangeable with a deluxe physical edition.
Choose a stable product identity
Use the retailer’s product ID when available. Otherwise, derive a carefully normalized key from the provider and canonical product URL. Do not use a mutable title as the identity: a renamed game or changed URL should not create a second tracking row.
How do you create the Telegram bot and protect its token?
Create the bot through Telegram’s @BotFather, copy the token once, and treat it exactly like a password. Anyone who obtains it can operate the bot, read updates delivered to it, and send messages as it.
- Open Telegram and start a chat with

Telegram’s Bot API uses an HTTPS base URL for requests. Incoming updates can be received either with getUpdates long polling or with a webhook; the two methods are mutually exclusive.
How do you prepare a VPS for a Python bot?
A small Linux VPS is enough for a single-user or small community bot. Give the process a non-root account, keep SSH and any required HTTPS port behind the firewall, and install only the packages you need.

What database schema should a small tracker use?
Start with four logical tables. Add provider-specific columns only when a real source requires them; avoid putting parsed HTML or transient error text in the core item record.

Represent money with a decimal type and an explicit currency, never binary floating point. Record the provider’s product ID, retrieval time, tax and shipping interpretation, availability, and a hash of the raw response for every observation. Store prices in a canonical currency only after a declared conversion policy; otherwise compare values only within the same currency.
How should the bot’s commands work?
Make adding an item a confirmation flow, not a single blind scrape. The bot should show the normalized product name, current price, currency, stock state, and the proposed target before creating the rule.

- Accept a supported product URL or provider/product ID and an optional target price.
- Validate the host and identifier against an allow-list of configured providers. Reject ambiguous or unsupported URLs.
- Fetch a preview through the provider adapter. Display edition, region, currency, tax/shipping treatment, availability, and current price.
- Ask the user to confirm. On confirmation, insert one row keyed by the stable provider/product key.
If the same product is already tracked, offer to change the threshold instead of creating a duplicate. Normalize tracking URLs so fragments and harmless query parameters do not generate separate rows.

Use inline buttons for item IDs rather than asking users to copy long URLs. Authorize every callback against the requesting chat ID so one user cannot manipulate another user’s rows.
How do scheduled checks avoid false or duplicate alerts?
A scheduled worker should fetch a bounded batch, normalize each result, persist it, and evaluate a state transition. The basic rule is:
alert when current_price <= target_price
and previous_alert_state was false
and item is available
Set the alert state to true after a successful notification. Reset it only after the price rises above the target, the item becomes unavailable, or your chosen policy says a cooldown has expired. This means a product that remains on sale does not generate a message every five minutes.

Rate limits and retries
- Apply provider-specific request spacing and a maximum number of items per run.
- Use exponential backoff for transient HTTP failures, with a cap so a broken provider does not occupy the whole worker.
- Do not retry authentication failures or parsing errors indefinitely; mark the source degraded and pause affected items when necessary.
- Use bounded concurrency. A large batch should not create a request burst that violates provider terms.
Availability and regional correctness
Handle “out of stock,” “pre-order,” and “region unavailable” as explicit states rather than converting them to a zero price. Keep digital and physical editions separate, and include the region used for every observation. Coupons and membership prices should be represented as separate offer types so a user is not alerted to a price they cannot obtain.
In-process scheduler or separate worker?

For a first release, an in-process job can be adequate if every provider call has a timeout and the work is bounded. Move to a worker when checks take long enough to affect command responsiveness or when you need multiple instances.
Should you use Telegram polling or a webhook?
Use long polling for the first single-VPS deployment unless you already operate a public HTTPS endpoint. A webhook is a strong choice for a multi-instance service or an installation that already has DNS, TLS, and a reverse proxy.

Telegram states that incoming updates are retained for no longer than 24 hours while waiting for delivery. A stopped bot therefore cannot rely on an unlimited backlog; monitor downtime and test recovery.
Long-polling implementation
Call getUpdates with a nonzero timeout, process each update, and advance the offset only after successful handling. Ensure only one poller uses the bot token. On shutdown, stop accepting new work, finish or cancel bounded tasks, and let systemd restart the process if it exits unexpectedly.

Telegram’s webhook guide requires a publicly reachable IPv4 server, TLS 1.2 or newer, a certificate whose CN or SAN matches the configured domain, and inbound access on port 443, 80, 88, or 8443. Telegram documents a max_connections range of 1 to 100; failed deliveries are retried.
Use a reverse proxy that terminates TLS and forwards to a private listener:
Internet -> reverse proxy :443 -> 127.0.0.1:8000 bot webhook
-> worker/scheduler
-> SQLite or PostgreSQL
Set a webhook secret token and verify the X-Telegram-Bot-Api-Secret-Token header before accepting a request. Keep port 8000 bound to localhost, expose only SSH and HTTPS through the firewall, and acknowledge quickly by placing heavier processing on a queue.

How do you run the bot with systemd?
A dedicated systemd unit starts the bot at boot, restarts it after failure, and gives you consistent logs. Use absolute paths, a dedicated user, a working directory, and a protected credentials mechanism.

Ubuntu’s systemd guidance recommends absolute executable paths and documents Environment= and EnvironmentFile=. It also warns that environment variables are unsuitable for secrets because they can be exposed through D-Bus and inherited by child processes. Put the token in a root-owned file readable by pricebot, or use the systemd credentials feature provided by your distribution.
- Save the unit as
/etc/systemd/system/price-tracker.service. - Reload units:

Do not log tokens, cookies, authorization headers, or full personal URLs. Use structured events with an item ID, provider, outcome, duration, and error class instead.
How do SQLite and PostgreSQL compare for this bot?
SQLite is the practical default for one process on one VPS. PostgreSQL is justified when concurrent writers, multiple workers, replicas, or operational policy make a server database worthwhile.

Whichever database you choose, schedule backups and perform a restore drill. A backup that has never been restored is only an assumption.
What should you monitor after deployment?
“The process is running” does not prove that prices are fresh or alerts are arriving. Add counters and health checks for the complete path.
- Last successful scheduled run and its duration.
- Number of active, paused, and failed tracked items.
- Provider HTTP errors, authentication failures, schema or parsing errors, and rate-limit responses.
- Telegram send failures and webhook pending-update count when using webhooks.
- Process restarts, database errors, disk usage, and backup age.
- Number of observations and alerts per provider, without storing sensitive payloads.
Pin dependency versions, review changelogs before upgrades, and update on a maintenance schedule. Test a provider fixture whenever its response format changes. Keep a manual /check path so an operator can verify one item without opening the database.
What are the common failure modes and fixes?
The bot sends no replies
Confirm that the token is valid, the service is running, and exactly one receiver is active. If a webhook is configured, remove it before testing polling; Telegram does not allow polling and an outgoing webhook simultaneously.

Alerts repeat every run
Persist the previous alert state and write an alert event after a successful send. Make the transition and event insert transactional where possible, and add a cooldown for providers that oscillate around the threshold.
The displayed price is wrong
Check currency, tax and shipping interpretation, region, edition, membership status, and coupon handling. Store the raw-response hash and provider timestamp so you can compare the parser’s result with the source observation.
A provider starts returning a login page
Stop retrying aggressively, mark the adapter unhealthy, and pause affected items. Reauthorize through an approved API or replace the source only when its terms permit automated retrieval.
The webhook receives nothing
Verify DNS points to the VPS, the certificate chain and hostname match, TLS 1.2 or newer is enabled, and the firewall permits one of Telegram’s supported ports: 443, 80, 88, or 8443. Confirm that the secret header is checked without rejecting legitimate requests because of a proxy configuration.

- Store the BotFather token in a protected file or systemd credential, not in source code or ordinary environment variables.
- Rotate the token immediately if it appears in a log, repository, support ticket, or shell history.
- Run as a non-root account with a private working directory and
NoNewPrivileges=true. - Use HTTPS for webhooks and validate Telegram’s secret header.
- Restrict provider requests, follow each provider’s terms, and redact cookies and personal URLs in logs.
- Back up the database, test restoration, and protect backup files as carefully as the live database.

What limits matter for a busy bot?
Telegram documents a default free broadcast rate of 30 messages per second. That figure is a platform broadcast limit, not a target for price alerts; your own provider quotas and users’ expectations are usually more restrictive. Telegram also documents webhook max_connections from 1 to 100. Keep alert sends queued and bounded so a sale affecting many items does not block command handling.
Because Telegram retains waiting updates for at most 24 hours, design scheduled price checks independently of update delivery. A bot can miss an old command after a long outage, but it should recover its tracking schedule from the database rather than from the Telegram update queue.

Can users subscribe to a price drop without giving the bot their phone number?
A bot normally needs the Telegram chat ID associated with the conversation, not the user’s phone number. Store only the identifiers and preferences needed for delivery, and provide a deletion command or support process that removes a user’s tracking data.
What happens when a tracked game is delisted?
The provider adapter should return an explicit unavailable or delisted state instead of a zero price. Pause the item, retain its history, and notify the user that the source no longer exposes a purchasable offer.
