What efficient progression looks like
Early resources are constrained by account-level caps, rarity requirements, quest-farmed materials, character-piece availability, equipment requirements, and awakening costs. A broad roster may look impressive, but it usually leaves every unit underpowered. Concentrated investment gives you a team that can clear content, farm more reliably, and then support a second team when a stage or event demands a different element.
- Build one active squad first. Put most experience, rank materials, equipment, character pieces, and awakening crystals into the characters you field.
- Cover roles and elements. A tank keeps the formation stable, damage dealers end fights, and support or healing solves stages that punish a purely offensive lineup. A multi-element party is less vulnerable when an encounter favors a different element.
- Complete progression gates in order. Account level and rarity determine the level ceiling; equipment rank requires a complete set; awakening consumes a fixed number of crystals per enhancement.
- Use rankings as a filter. A high placement can identify a strong candidate, but role fit, element coverage, access to character pieces, and the mode you play matter more than a list position alone.
How to choose your first squad
Start with roles, not rarity alone
Pick a frontline tank first, then add one or more damage dealers. Add support or healing if the stage’s damage pattern, debuffs, or survival check requires it. A rare character that cannot perform the job your current stage demands is less useful than a readily available unit that fills the missing role and can be upgraded consistently.

Keep more than one element available
The beginner guidance recommends a multi-element party because encounters and other content can reward different elements. Do not force every early resource into a single-color lineup. Your first squad can still have a primary element, but keeping viable alternatives prevents one counter or stage mechanic from stopping story progress.
Use a simple selection test
- List the characters you can field now, including those for whom you can obtain character pieces.
- Mark each unit’s role and element.
- Choose a stable frontline, at least one reliable damage source, and the support or healing needed for the content you are clearing.
- Prefer units whose rank materials, equipment, and pieces you can farm regularly rather than a unit that will remain stuck at an early stage.
- Reserve a place for a second element or a mode-specific specialist once the first squad clears content consistently.
What current examples tell you
Pocket Gamer’s PvE snapshot updated October 18, 2026 for version 4.12.1 names Alpha as its top character and lists Rose Oriana as a top-tier tank. Those names are useful starting points when they fit your account, but they are not permanent answers or a substitute for a complete team. The official App Store description emphasizes that players can build a party using any character from the series, so your practical choice depends on availability, role coverage, and investment access.
How to read tier lists without wasting resources
Tier lists are dated opinions about performance under a particular patch and mode. Pocket Tactics specifically warns that buffs, nerfs, and new characters can change rankings. Pocket Gamer’s current page is tied to version 4.12.1 and dated October 18, 2026; a list without a patch and date should not be treated as current evidence.

Level and rarity progression
Know the rarity stages
The progression reference records five rarity stages: A, S, SS, SS+, and SS++. A character’s level maximum is tied to both your account level and that character’s rarity stage. Raising the account alone therefore does not remove every ceiling, and increasing rarity alone does not let a character exceed the account-level limit.

A practical leveling procedure
- Choose the squad you will actually field for the next group of stages.
- Raise those characters until the account-level or rarity-level ceiling appears.
- If the account-level ceiling is blocking progress, continue account progression rather than abandoning the unit.
- If rarity is the ceiling, identify the character’s available piece sources and farm the most dependable one.
- Do not pour equal experience and rank materials into bench units while the active team still has an open level or rarity gate.
Piece access is not uniform. The documented sources include hard quests, shops, events, guild content, and duplicate summons, depending on rarity and character type. Check the character’s own acquisition screen instead of assuming every unit follows the same route.
Equipment: finish the rank set before chasing upgrades
Understand the six-slot requirement
Each equipment rank uses six equipment pieces. The progression reference states that all six must be equipped before the character can advance to the next rank. Rank-up materials are farmed through quests, making equipment a repeatable progression target rather than a one-time summon bonus.

Use this farming order
- Open the character’s current rank screen and note every missing piece.
- Use the game’s quest or equipment view to locate the stage that drops each required material.
- Farm the pieces needed to occupy every slot at the current rank.
- Advance the rank as soon as the full set is equipped and the other displayed requirements are met.
- Only after the rank is complete, compare better substats or special effects in your inventory.

Do not spread equipment across the roster
Gear materials are most valuable on the characters in your active squad. A bench unit with one or two upgraded pieces rarely helps a current clear, while a complete set on a tank or primary damage dealer improves the team immediately. Build a second set only when the first squad is stable or a specific event requires another element or role.
Magic awakening: when ten crystals is worth it
Magic awakening costs 10 magic crystals per enhancement. The documented maximum is five enhancements for standard pickup characters and three for limited pickup characters. Those limits make crystal planning important: a full awakening path can consume 50 crystals for a standard pickup unit or 30 for a limited pickup unit, assuming every listed enhancement is available and the live client has not changed the rules.

Use a three-question decision rule
- Will this character remain in your main teams? If the answer is uncertain, keep the crystals.
- Does the awakening solve a real stage problem? A survival, damage, or team-effect improvement that changes a clear is more valuable than a small gain on a bench unit.
- Can the unit’s other gates be maintained? Awakening a character that you cannot level, rank, or equip is inefficient.
Awaken core units first. A limited character may have fewer documented enhancement steps, but that does not make every limited unit a better crystal target; role, element, access, and long-term use still decide the value.
Where to farm character pieces and rank materials
Character pieces
Depending on the character and rarity, pieces can come from hard quests, shops, events, guild content, or duplicate summons. Use the unit’s acquisition panel to identify the current source and its conditions. Prioritize a source you can repeat without sacrificing the materials needed for your active team.
Rank-up materials
Rank materials are quest-farmed. The beginner guidance identifies equipment and rank-up materials as core progression, so make those quests part of your regular stamina plan instead of waiting until every character is underpowered.
A sustainable daily routine
- Clear available account-progression content so the account-level ceiling continues to rise.
- Farm the equipment pieces missing from the active squad’s current rank.
- Run the relevant hard quests for pieces of the characters you actually field.
- Use shops, events, or guild content for pieces when those sources are more reliable for your target unit.
- Spend surplus stamina on the next bottleneck rather than randomly upgrading unfielded characters.
The exact stamina costs, drop rates, and shop inventories are live-service details. They can change with updates, so use the current stage information in the client when choosing between two farms.
Adapting builds to story, events, and PvP
A character can be excellent in one mode and merely adequate in another. When two units compete for the same slot, compare the following five factors:

- Role reliability: Does the unit consistently perform its job?
- Element coverage: Does it help you answer encounters that punish your current element?
- Content performance: Is your priority story and general PvE, a particular event, or PvP?
- Investment and access: Can you obtain pieces, rank materials, and equipment without delaying the rest of the squad?
- Team contribution: Do equipment or awakening effects improve allies as well as the character?

Keep a general-purpose core and change one or two slots when a mode calls for it. Rebuilding the entire roster for every event consumes rank materials and crystals that could have strengthened your permanent team.

Troubleshooting common progression stalls
The character cannot rank up
Check that every equipment slot for the current rank is filled, then review the rank screen for any additional material requirement. Farm the displayed quest materials rather than replacing the unit immediately.

Rarity may be the limiting gate. Check whether the unit is at A, S, SS, SS+, or SS++, then use the listed piece source to advance it. If the rarity gate is clear, account level may still be the cap.

The team loses to a stage it should clear
Look for a missing role or an unfavorable element before spending crystals. Add a frontline tank, support, or healing when the stage requires it, and consider an alternate element from your developing roster.
You ran out of magic crystals
Stop awakening bench units and reserve future crystals for characters that remain in your main teams or have a clear mode-specific purpose. The fixed 10-crystal step cost makes small, speculative upgrades expensive over time.
Your favorite character is low on a tier list
Check the list’s date, version, and mode. The current Pocket Gamer snapshot is for version 4.12.1, and rankings can change after buffs, nerfs, or new releases. If the character fills a needed role and you can complete its progression gates, it may still be the right practical investment.
A repeatable upgrade checklist
- Choose one active squad with a tank, damage, and any needed support or healing.
- Keep at least one alternate element available as your roster grows.
- Confirm the current tier-list date and mode before using scarce resources.
- Raise active characters until an account or rarity gate stops them.
- Farm character pieces from the source shown for that specific unit.
- Farm quest materials for the active equipment rank.
- Complete the current rank set before optimizing replacement substats or effects.
- Awaken only units that will stay in your main teams or solve a defined mode problem.
- Check live event, shop, code, cost, and drop information in the client because service updates can change them.
- Build the next team only after the first one clears content reliably.
