Rockstar’s page says “Plays Best On PS5.” The reviewed official material does not quantify a performance difference between PS5 and Xbox, or between PS5 models. It also does not give model-specific minimum requirements that make a PS5 Pro or Xbox Series X necessary. Do not pay extra for one of those models on the assumption that it is required for GTA VI.
Compare the total cost, not just the console label

- Disc drive: Decide based on your other games and media, not on the boxed GTA VI product Rockstar describes.
When does a disc drive matter?
Rockstar says the boxed physical version of GTA VI contains a download code and no game disc. A disc drive is therefore not needed to use that boxed code. It may still be useful if you want to play other physical games or use disc media. Sony lists PS5, PS5 Digital Edition, PS5 Pro, and a removable disc drive; check the exact model, accessory compatibility, and local availability before buying.
How much should you pay?
Sony’s U.S. recommended retail price for PS5 Digital Edition was $599.99, effective April 2, 2026. This is a dated manufacturer-recommended price, not a worldwide price or a quote for a current retailer offer. Sony’s price update gives the details. Check local prices and current offers before deciding. No current official Xbox price is established here, so a global “cheapest console” ranking would be misleading.

Rockstar’s June 26, 2026 purchase information names PlayStation Store, Xbox Store, Rockstar Store, and select retailers as purchase channels. Check the official purchase details and the seller’s checkout page for regional availability, price, bonus terms, and code restrictions.
