Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe lowest advertised console price is rarely the lowest cost. To spend less, choose the right game format first, set an all-in ceiling, and compare a new system, a manufacturer-certified refurbishment, and a reputable used unit on the same basis: console, controller count, games, storage, subscriptions, delivery, tax, warranty and return rights. A digital-only console can be the cheapest way into a generation, while a disc model or certified-refurbished system can cost less over several years when you buy used games, borrow discs or need stronger warranty coverage.
Define “cheaper” before you shop
Console deals are easy to misread because the headline usually covers only the hardware. Write down the setup you actually need and compare its total cost:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
Total cost = console + extra controllers + headset or camera + games + online subscription + storage expansion + delivery + tax − trade-in credit.
Do this for every candidate. A bundle is not a saving if it includes a game you would not buy. A cheaper digital model is not cheaper for a buyer who regularly purchases discounted discs, borrows games or resells them. A used console without meaningful return protection may be expensive if one fault forces a second purchase.
#1 Best Overall
- Controllers are original OEM (not 3rd party)
- Tested and works well. Nice condition
Use an all-in ceiling rather than a console-only budget. Include the number of people playing locally, the first game you intend to buy, whether online multiplayer is required, and the storage you will need after installing those games. Prices, stock, bundle contents and marketplace seller terms change quickly, so perform the final comparison immediately before checkout.
Choose the game format first
Disc consoles
A console with a disc drive costs more up front in many lineups, but physical games create options that can lower long-term spending: buying pre-owned copies, waiting for clearance sales, borrowing from friends, sharing within the rules of a household, and reselling games when finished. Discs also let you keep playing a purchased game if a digital storefront listing changes, although many games still require downloads or patches.
Choose a disc model when you already own physical games, expect to buy used games, want to resell titles, or need the flexibility to borrow. Compare the complete package, including the drive, because a digital console plus a later drive can erase the initial saving.
Digital-only consoles
Digital systems avoid the drive and can have a lower entry price, but every game must be purchased through the platform’s digital store. You cannot use a borrowed disc or resell a digital license. Before choosing one, price several games you are likely to buy, not just the launch title, and include a realistic storage expansion.
Xbox Series S
Xbox Series S is a current-generation, digital-only console. It cannot play physical discs. It is a strong fit for someone comfortable buying downloads and who values the lowest entry price, particularly when most play will come through a subscription library. It is a poor value for a disc owner who expects to carry an existing physical collection forward.
Xbox Series X
Xbox Series X targets buyers who want higher performance and physical-game support. A new unit should be compared with certified-refurbished inventory and with the cash value of any trade-in. If the games you buy are frequently available on disc or second-hand, the drive can reduce software cost over the console’s useful life.
PlayStation 5 and PS5 Digital Edition
PlayStation 5 configurations divide the same decision: pay for disc flexibility now or choose the digital edition and possibly add a separate drive later. If there is any realistic chance that you will buy, borrow or resell physical games, put the future drive cost in the initial worksheet rather than treating it as an optional surprise.

Build an all-in cost worksheet
Use one row per cost so that two offers are genuinely comparable. Record the exact model and capacity; similarly named consoles can have different storage, drives or included accessories.
| Cost item | What to record | Why it changes the decision |
|---|---|---|
| Console | Exact model, edition, storage and condition | Digital and disc editions can have different entry prices and future costs. |
| Controllers | Number included and number required | Local multiplayer can turn a one-controller offer into a larger purchase. |
| Games | Prices for several likely titles in the format you will use | Digital-only buyers lose disc borrowing, used-game and resale options. |
| Subscription | Required online plan and the period you expect to keep it | Online multiplayer and catalog access can be recurring costs. |
| Storage | Free space after system files and expansion price | Large downloads can make an apparently cheap system inconvenient or costly. |
| Accessories | Headset, charging cable, stand, camera or adapter | Bundles often omit items a particular setup needs. |
| Delivery and tax | Checkout total for your location | A deal headline may exclude both. |
| Trade-in credit | Documented credit and any restrictions | Credit lowers net cost, but compare it with a cash sale and the replacement warranty. |
Keep the worksheet for the first year and the expected useful life. Recurring subscriptions, expansion storage and game-format differences matter more over time than a small launch-day discount.
New, certified-refurbished, used and open-box: what you receive
| Purchase route | Typical condition and protection | Best use | Questions to answer |
|---|---|---|---|
| New from an authorized retailer | Unused hardware with the manufacturer’s normal coverage and the retailer’s stated return policy | Buyer who wants the simplest warranty path | Is the seller authorized for this region? What is the return window and what does the box include? |
| Manufacturer-certified refurbished | Inspected through the maker’s program, with stated accessories and a defined warranty | Buyer seeking a lower price without giving up a formal manufacturer-backed route | What tests were performed, which accessories are standard, and how long is the warranty? |
| Ordinary used | Condition depends on the seller; manufacturer warranty may not apply | Experienced buyer who can verify the unit and accepts more risk | Is the serial number intact? Are returns, faults and controller wear covered in writing? |
| Open-box or retailer-refurbished | May be a return, display unit or retailer repair; protection varies | Buyer who can inspect the grading and policy carefully | Who performed the refurbishment, what testing was done, and is the warranty transferable? |
Why certification matters
Microsoft describes its Xbox certified-refurbished process as screening, repair, testing and cleaning, followed by repackaging with standard accessories and manuals. Xbox consoles in that program carry a 90-day warranty, according to Microsoft’s 2026 documentation. Check that the listing is actually in the certified program; a seller’s use of the word “refurbished” alone does not establish the same process or coverage.
Sony’s direct PlayStation guidance states that every certified-refurbished PlayStation product includes a standard one-year limited warranty. That is materially different from an ordinary used listing, so put the warranty length next to the price when comparing offers.
Sony’s current US buying guidance also says to use authorized retailers to help ensure functionality, authenticity, return policy and warranty coverage. It warns that third-party used PlayStation products are not covered by warranty. A lower price can still be rational if the seller offers a strong, written return policy and the buyer accepts the risk, but do not treat a third-party used unit as equivalent to a manufacturer-certified product.
Compare the main current-generation choices
| Model or route | Format | Cost advantage | Trade-off to price in | Warranty note from the manufacturer’s stated program |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Xbox Series S | Digital-only | Lowest entry point among the choices described here | No physical discs; digital-store pricing, storage and future game purchases determine long-term value | Coverage depends on whether the unit is new, certified refurbished or ordinary used. |
| Xbox Series X | Disc-capable | Can reduce software cost through physical, used and resold games; certified-refurbished stock may lower hardware cost | Higher hardware outlay and potentially higher delivery or tax total | Microsoft’s certified-refurbished Xbox console program specifies a 90-day warranty. |
| PlayStation 5, disc edition | Disc-capable | Supports physical purchases, borrowing and resale | Higher initial hardware cost than a digital configuration in the same family | Coverage depends on the purchase route and seller authorization. |
| PS5 Digital Edition | Digital-only unless a separate drive is added | Lower initial hardware cost can suit an all-digital library | Price a future disc drive if your buying habits may change; no disc borrowing or resale without physical media | Sony’s certified-refurbished PlayStation products include a standard one-year limited warranty. |
How to tell whether a bundle is a real saving
Use the “buy separately” test
Write down the bundle price, then price the same console by itself and the exact included items separately. Subtract only items you would definitely buy. The effective bundle saving is:
Standalone console price + wanted item prices − bundle price.

- Only on Playstation PS4 bundle includes a Jet black 1TB PS4, matching Dualshock4 Wireless Controller, God of war, the last of US remastered, and Horizon Zero Dawn: complete Edition games.
- It is a new beginning for Kratos. With his son Atreus, he must face the brutal Norse wilds and venture on a dangerous, personal journey.

- Experience the full Horizon Zero Dawn adventure. Explore a version of Earth inhabited by mysterious machines in a new open-world action/RPG.
Do not assign value to an unwanted game, duplicate controller or accessory you would never purchase. If the bundle includes a title you would have bought anyway, use its current standalone price in the calculation. If it is a download tied to one account, do not value it like a transferable disc.
Recommended Free Tools
Check the fine print
- Confirm the exact console edition, storage and drive.
- Check whether the game is a physical copy, a download code or a subscription entitlement.
- Read the code’s region and expiration terms before counting it as value.
- Verify that every advertised accessory is in the box.
- Compare return rules for the console and any separately shipped item.
Watch for “free” extras that create later costs
A game can require a subscription for online features; an extra controller can need a charging solution; and a digital bundle can consume storage that forces an expansion purchase. Add those downstream costs to the same worksheet instead of accepting the bundle’s claimed value.
Use discounts, trade-ins and timing without increasing risk
Manufacturer-direct inventory first
Start by checking the manufacturer’s own certified-refurbished inventory. Record the model number, included accessories, cosmetic grade, warranty duration and return terms while the listing is visible. This creates a reliable baseline against which retailer and marketplace offers can be judged.
Authorized retailer promotions
Compare authorized retailers only after identifying the exact configuration. A sale on a different storage size or a digital edition is not a direct price comparison. Sony’s authorization guidance is particularly important for PlayStation buyers because it connects retailer status with authenticity, functionality, returns and warranty coverage.
Trade-in credit
Trade-in can lower the net cost when you already own an older console or games. GameStop reported in its 2025 annual report covering 2024 operations that it accepts pre-owned gaming products for cash or credit that can be applied to another purchase and operates refurbishment activity. Terms vary by product, condition and promotion, so obtain the actual quote before treating credit as savings.

A slightly smaller credit may be worthwhile if it comes with a substantially better-protected replacement; the reverse can also be true.
Recheck immediately before checkout
Console stock and promotional bundles are volatile. Confirm that the seller has not changed, the item is still new or certified refurbished as described, the warranty and return terms remain visible, and the checkout total includes tax and delivery. Save the order page and invoice.

How to vet a used or refurbished listing
- Identify the seller. Prefer the manufacturer, an authorized retailer or a retailer with a clearly published used-game and electronics policy. Marketplace listings need extra scrutiny.
- Match the exact model. Check the edition, storage, disc drive and regional version against your worksheet.
- Inspect serial-number information. Avoid listings that hide, obscure or refuse to confirm the serial number. A missing or altered serial can complicate service and ownership verification.
- Read the condition grade. Look for specific notes about controller drift, ports, fan noise, scratches, missing stands, cables and manuals. “Excellent” without a definition is not a test report.
- Confirm what was tested. A credible refurbishment description should identify inspection, repair, testing and cleaning steps or clearly state that the item is merely an untested return.
- Get warranty terms in writing. Note the provider, duration, exclusions, shipping responsibility and whether the warranty follows the product or only the original purchaser.
- Check the return window. Make sure you have enough time to test disc reading, downloads, Wi-Fi, HDMI, USB ports, controller pairing, fan behavior and account sign-in.
- Pay through a method with a dispute process. Keep photographs of the package, serial label and contents until the return period ends.
Never assume that a platform’s “refurbished” badge means manufacturer certification. The listing must identify the program and its warranty.
Test the console as soon as it arrives
- Compare the serial number and model on the console, box and invoice.
- Check that the included controller, power cable, HDMI cable and any advertised stand or adapter are present.
- Install a game or substantial update to test storage, network stability and download behavior.
- For a disc model, insert more than one disc and listen for unusual drive noise.
- Test every controller button, stick and trigger; intermittent drift is easier to document inside the return window.
- Test HDMI output at the resolution your display supports and try all relevant USB ports.
- Check the console for overheating warnings, unexpected shutdowns or abnormal fan noise during a sustained session.
- Remove your account and reset the device before returning it.
If a fault appears, stop modifying the system, photograph the problem, contact the seller through the stated channel and quote the order number and serial. Do not let a seller’s informal troubleshooting delay the written return deadline.
Storage, subscriptions and accessories that change value
Storage
Compare usable space, not only the capacity printed on the box. System software consumes part of the drive, and a digital library can grow quickly through patches and downloadable content. Price the expansion approved for the specific console and include installation or heat-sink requirements where applicable. A small hardware saving is not meaningful if it forces an immediate expansion purchase.
Subscriptions
List the subscription needed for online multiplayer and the catalog access you actually expect to use. A subscription can reduce the number of games you buy, but it is a recurring cost and access can end when the plan expires. Include at least the first year in comparisons that claim one system is cheaper.
Controllers and local multiplayer
Count players, not boxes. If two or more people will play locally, price the additional controllers and any charging solution. A bundle with one extra controller may be better than a cheaper console-only offer, but only when you need that controller.
A practical buying sequence
- Start with games and formats. List exclusives, physical games you own, local multiplayer needs and subscription requirements.
- Set the all-in ceiling. Add controllers, headset, storage, games, subscription, delivery and tax.
- Check certified-refurbished stock. Record condition, accessories, warranty and returns for the exact model.
- Price a new bundle. Compare it only with the standalone console plus the exact items you would otherwise buy.
- Check authorized and reputable used channels. Reject listings that omit serial status, grading, return rights or warranty coverage.
- Model digital ownership. Price several likely games and storage expansion; include the future drive for a digital PlayStation model if physical media may matter.
- Apply trade-in credit. Compare the quote with a cash alternative and with the warranty on the replacement.
- Recheck at checkout. Confirm stock, seller, contents, warranty, returns, tax and shipping on the final page.
Which route fits which buyer?
| If you are… | Usually the sensible starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| All-digital, budget-focused and comfortable with subscriptions | Xbox Series S or a digital PlayStation configuration | Lower entry cost, provided your game prices and storage plan remain acceptable. |
| A disc owner or frequent used-game buyer | Xbox Series X or a disc-equipped PlayStation 5 | Physical purchases, borrowing and resale can offset the higher hardware cost. |
| Seeking lower risk than ordinary used | Manufacturer-certified refurbished | Defined testing and a stated warranty provide a clearer recovery path. |
| Replacing a failed console immediately | New from an authorized retailer or certified refurbished with a usable return window | Speed matters, but an undocumented marketplace unit can create a second outage. |
| Already owning an older console or games | Trade-in comparison before checkout | Credit may reduce net cost, but verify the quote and replacement warranty. |
Bottom-line decision rule
Buy the cheapest complete setup that supports the way you actually acquire games. Choose digital-only hardware only after pricing several future games and storage. Choose a disc model when borrowing, used buying or resale are part of your plan. Treat manufacturer-certified refurbishment as a distinct category with documented testing and warranty, not as a synonym for any used listing. A bundle is a deal only when every valued item replaces a purchase you would otherwise make, and a trade-in is a saving only after you compare its real credit with cash value and the replacement’s protection.
