Buy Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition for PC for a Windows computer, then install the official Minecraft Launcher and sign in with the Microsoft account used at checkout. Windows PC buyers receive both Java and Bedrock. On a Mac, the supported purchase is Java Edition; Bedrock is not listed as a macOS edition. Xbox, PlayStation 4/5, and Nintendo Switch use Bedrock Edition purchased through their respective platform stores. Java multiplayer connects Windows, Mac, and Linux Java players, while Bedrock enables play across Windows, Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, and mobile when the required accounts and online services are in place.
What exactly are you buying on each platform?
Minecraft is divided into Java Edition and Bedrock Edition. The store and platform determine which edition you receive, and that choice affects cross-play, controls, modding, servers, and the hardware you need.

On PC, the official product description says, “Minecraft Java Edition and Minecraft Bedrock Edition are sold as a bundle on PC.” That bundle applies to the Windows PC purchase. A Mac installation follows the Java path described for macOS rather than providing a native Bedrock edition.
Which Minecraft edition should you choose?
Choose Java when your priority is PC-only play, Java server communities, or the broadest traditional modding ecosystem. Choose Bedrock when you need console or mobile cross-play, controller or touch input, Marketplace content, or split-screen features supported on compatible devices.

Pick Java for a PC modding setup
Java is the relevant edition if you intend to join Java-specific servers or use the PC modding ecosystem built around Java. It also runs on macOS and Linux, so a Java player can join friends using those operating systems or Windows Java.

Bedrock is the practical choice when one friend is on Xbox, another is on Switch, and another is on a phone or Windows PC. Everyone must still use Bedrock, sign in to the required accounts, and meet the online-service requirements of the console they are using.
What accounts and subscriptions do you need before buying?
A Microsoft account is required or linked across the listed platforms. PlayStation and Switch players also need their platform accounts, and console online multiplayer requires the platform’s paid online service.
- Windows PC and Mac: Use a Microsoft account for the purchase and launcher sign-in.
- Xbox: Use the Microsoft account associated with the Xbox or Microsoft Store transaction.
- PlayStation: Use a PlayStation Network account and link or sign in with a Microsoft account inside Minecraft.
- Nintendo Switch: Use the Nintendo account required for the eShop purchase and a Microsoft account for Minecraft’s connected services.
- Online console play: Xbox requires Xbox Game Pass Core, PlayStation requires PlayStation Plus, and Nintendo Switch requires Nintendo Switch Online.
Use one Microsoft account consistently. Buying with one account and launching with another is the most common reason a purchased game does not appear in the launcher or in the expected account library.
What PC requirements should you check before buying?
Check the current official PC requirements for the operating system and edition you plan to run. The figures below are the requirements listed for the current guidance accessed in 2026.
| Edition | Minimum operating system | Memory guidance | Graphics requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Java | Windows 10 64-bit, macOS 12 or newer, or 64-bit Linux | 8 GB with a discrete GPU; 12 GB with integrated graphics | Vulkan 1.3-capable GPU with at least 2 GB VRAM |
| Bedrock | Windows PC version supported by the current PC listing | 4 GB minimum; 8 GB recommended | Use the current PC requirements for the exact graphics hardware and driver support |
The same computer may be able to run both editions while delivering different results. Integrated graphics systems should be checked against the higher Java memory guidance, and a machine that does not meet the listed Vulkan 1.3 and VRAM requirement should not be assumed to run Java acceptably.

How do you buy and install Minecraft on Windows PC?
Windows buyers purchase the Java-and-Bedrock PC bundle once, install the launcher, and select the edition they want from the launcher library.
- Open the official Minecraft PC product page. Select Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition for PC and complete the purchase with the Microsoft account you intend to use for play.
- Download the Minecraft Launcher. Use the official Minecraft Help download section, then run the installer and allow it to finish.
- Sign in to the launcher. Enter the same Microsoft account used at checkout. The game should appear in the launcher library; if it does not, verify the account before purchasing again.
- Select an edition. Choose Java for Java servers and PC modding, or Bedrock for controller support and cross-play with console and mobile players.
- Install and launch. Start the installation for the selected edition, wait for the launcher to finish, and use the Play button. You can return to the launcher later to install or launch the other edition included with the PC bundle.
When should a Windows player use Java?
Use Java when the people you want to play with are on Java, when your server community is Java-based, or when PC modding is the deciding feature. Java cross-play does not extend to Bedrock console worlds.
When should a Windows player use Bedrock?
Use Bedrock when your group includes Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, or mobile players. Bedrock also makes a controller-focused Windows setup more straightforward than a keyboard-and-mouse-only Java setup.

How do you buy and install Minecraft on a Mac?
Mac users purchase Minecraft through minecraft.net, install the launcher, and select Java Edition. The official edition guidance lists Java for macOS; it does not list Bedrock as a macOS edition.
- Check macOS first. The current Java listing sets macOS 12 or newer as the minimum and macOS 14 as the recommended version.
- Purchase through minecraft.net. Complete the transaction with the Microsoft account you will use in the launcher.
- Download the Minecraft Launcher. Install the macOS launcher from the official Minecraft download area.
- Sign in. Use the purchasing Microsoft account. Select Java Edition when the launcher presents your available installation.
- Install Java Edition and launch. Let the launcher download the game files, then start Java from the launcher library.
A Mac Java player can join Java players on Windows and Linux. A Mac Java installation cannot join a Bedrock console world simply because both games are called Minecraft; the editions use separate multiplayer ecosystems.
How do you buy and install Minecraft on Xbox?
Xbox consoles use Bedrock Edition. Buy or redeem Minecraft through the Xbox or Microsoft Store, then install it from the console library or store page.
Rank #3
- Open the Xbox or Microsoft Store. Find Minecraft and complete the purchase or redeem an eligible code with the Microsoft account that will play the game.
- Install from your library. Select Minecraft in the owned-games list or store page and choose the installation option.
- Launch Minecraft. Sign in with the required Microsoft account when prompted.
- Prepare online play if needed. Maintain Xbox Game Pass Core for console online multiplayer, then join a compatible Bedrock world, Realm, or server.
If an Xbox player is trying to join a Java server or a Java friend’s world, changing the account will not solve the mismatch. The Xbox installation is Bedrock, so the host and other players must provide a Bedrock-compatible session.
How do you buy and install Minecraft on PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 5?
PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 purchases are Bedrock Edition purchases made through PlayStation Store.
- Open PlayStation Store. Search for Minecraft and buy it with the PlayStation Network account that will own and download the game.
- Download it from the library. After checkout, select Minecraft in your PlayStation library and start the installation.
- Open Minecraft and connect accounts. Sign in to PlayStation Network and link or sign in with the required Microsoft account when Minecraft requests it.
- Enable online multiplayer access. PlayStation Plus is required for console online multiplayer. Use it with a Bedrock world, Realm, or server that your friends can also access.
PlayStation players should confirm which account is active before linking. A Microsoft account already connected to another PlayStation profile may not behave as expected if you switch profiles during setup.
How do you buy and install Minecraft on Nintendo Switch?
Nintendo Switch uses Bedrock Edition purchased through Nintendo eShop.
- Open Nintendo eShop. Purchase Minecraft with the Nintendo account that will download and own the game.
- Install from the Home screen. Let the download complete, or redownload Minecraft from the Nintendo account library if it was previously installed.
- Sign in to the connected accounts. Minecraft may require both the Nintendo account and a Microsoft account for its connected features.
- Prepare online play. Nintendo Switch Online is required for online multiplayer. Join a Bedrock-compatible world, Realm, or server after the subscription and account setup are complete.
The Switch version is not Java Edition. If a friend gives you Java server details, you need a Bedrock session or a different Java-capable device to play together.

Can Minecraft on console play with PC players?
Yes, but only when the PC player is using Bedrock Edition. Windows Bedrock, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, and mobile Bedrock can share cross-platform play when each player has the necessary Microsoft account connection and the console player has the required online subscription.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What are the biggest Java and Bedrock differences after installation?
Cross-play and community
Java’s supported multiplayer group is Windows, Mac, and Linux Java players. Bedrock’s supported group spans Windows, consoles, and mobile, making it the broader choice for households using several device types.

Bedrock is built around controller support on consoles and PC and touch input on mobile. Compatible console setups can also use split-screen. Java is the computer-oriented edition and does not provide the same console split-screen experience.
Mods, servers, and Marketplace content
Java is the edition associated with PC modding and Java-server communities. Bedrock uses its own content ecosystem, including Marketplace content, and is the edition used by console and mobile versions. Content made for one edition should not be assumed to install or run on the other.
Performance planning
Use the edition-specific memory and graphics guidance rather than assuming that a computer capable of one edition automatically meets the other edition’s requirements. Java’s listed minimums are notably different for systems with discrete versus integrated graphics.
How can you verify that the installation is working?
Verification takes only a few checks and prevents most multiplayer confusion.

- DELUXE COLLECTION — Includes Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition, three Bedrock add-ons, three exclusive Character Creator items, and 700 Minecoins.
- CREATE YOUR WORLD — Build whatever you imagine in an infinite world that’s unique in every playthrough.
- EXPLORE AND CRAFT — Discover biomes, resources, and mobs, then craft your way through a sandbox world filled with surprises.
- SURVIVE THE ADVENTURE — Face mysterious foes, travel across exciting landscapes, and venture into perilous dimensions.
- PLAY TOGETHER — Play cross-platform with friends in Bedrock Edition on console, mobile, and PC, or join community servers in Java Edition on PC, Mac, and Linux. Online console multiplayer requires a platform-specific subscription (sold separately).
- Confirm the launcher or console library shows the account that made the purchase.
- Open the title screen and identify whether it says Java Edition or Bedrock features are available.
- For a group session, ask every player which edition appears on their device before troubleshooting invitations.
- On consoles, confirm the platform online subscription before testing an online world.
- On Mac, verify that the operating system meets the listed macOS minimum before treating launch problems as account problems.
What should you do if Minecraft does not appear after purchase?
Start with account identity rather than buying the game again. The launcher library is tied to the Microsoft account used for the transaction, while console downloads are tied to the relevant platform account.
- Sign out of the launcher or console Minecraft account.
- Sign back in with the Microsoft account used at checkout.
- On PlayStation or Switch, verify that the expected platform account is active as well.
- Reopen the library or store and check for the owned title.
- If the title appears but will not launch, compare the computer’s operating system, memory, and graphics capability with the current requirements.
Do not use a Java installation to test a Bedrock purchase or a Bedrock console installation to test Java server access. Those are separate edition paths, so the symptom can look like a missing purchase when the real issue is an edition mismatch.
How do you choose the right purchase in one minute?
- Windows PC, unsure which edition: Buy the Java & Bedrock bundle; you can select either edition in the launcher.
- Mac: Buy the Java path listed for macOS and verify macOS 12 or newer.
- Friends on consoles or phones: Use Bedrock on Windows or buy the Bedrock console version.
- PC mods or Java servers: Use Java on Windows, Mac, or Linux.
- Console online multiplayer: Add the platform’s required online subscription to the purchase plan.
The safest purchase is therefore determined by the devices in your group, not by the Minecraft name alone. Match the edition first, then confirm accounts, hardware, and online-service requirements.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to buy Minecraft twice to get Java and Bedrock on Windows?
No. The Windows product is sold as a Java-and-Bedrock bundle, and both installations appear through the Minecraft Launcher when you sign in with the purchasing Microsoft account. A console purchase is a separate store transaction and does not change the Windows launcher library.

Can a Mac run the Bedrock edition?
The official edition guidance lists Java Edition for macOS and does not list Bedrock as a macOS edition. A Mac player who needs Bedrock cross-play must use a supported Bedrock device instead of treating the Mac Java installation as interchangeable.
Why can’t my Java friend join my Xbox world?
Xbox runs Bedrock, while your friend may be running Java. Both players need the same edition; changing Microsoft accounts or reinstalling the launcher cannot bridge a Java-to-Bedrock session.
Is a console online subscription needed for single-player Minecraft?
The listed Xbox Game Pass Core, PlayStation Plus, and Nintendo Switch Online requirements apply to console online multiplayer. They are not described as requirements for the game’s local, non-online modes.
What should I check before linking a Microsoft account on a console?
Confirm which PlayStation Network or Nintendo account is active and decide which Microsoft account will remain your Minecraft account. Using the same Microsoft identity across devices makes purchased access and cross-play setup easier to track.
