GOG describes its catalog as legitimate and DRM-free, and its Gabriel Knight listing supplies an offline installer without requiring Galaxy. Steam sells licensed access tied to an account, while itch.io delivers whatever files a creator uploads; itch.io itself does not impose DRM, but a creator can still include activation or other protection. The right purchase is therefore not simply the cheapest download. Verify who is authorized to sell that edition, whether checkout gives you an installer or only a platform key, which operating systems and compatibility tools are supported, how offline play works, and what refund policy applies.

For a classic you want to archive locally, check the exact edition on GOG first. GOG says its selection is legitimate and DRM-free, describes Galaxy as optional, and advertises a 30-day refund window. That does not mean every old game supports every operating system or that every release includes the same extras; inspect the individual page.
GOG: the clearest route to a standalone installer
A GOG purchase can include an offline installer that you download from your account and keep as a local copy, subject to the game’s license. The store’s Preservation Program tests and maintains designated games, but it currently covers Windows titles. Steam: a licensed library with account dependencies
Valve’s Steam Subscriber Agreement says, “The Content and Services are licensed, not sold.” A Steam account is necessary, and a client or internet connection may be required for installation, updates, authentication or an external launcher. Steam Offline Mode must be prepared while online; it cannot defeat a game’s own active-connection requirement or make an external launcher optional.
itch.io: inspect the creator’s release, not just the storefront
itch.io’s creator FAQ answers, “No. itch.io lets users download the games exactly as you uploaded them.” That means the platform does not add DRM or rewrite the files; it does not promise that every creator upload is DRM-free. The purchase page identifies downloadable files, operating-system icons and any external activation key, so those fields are more useful than a blanket assumption about the marketplace.

ZOOM Platform and Humble Store: useful leads with extra verification
A third-party old-games guide identifies ZOOM Platform as a retro-oriented seller, but a current title’s authorization, files and refund terms still need checking on the seller’s site. Commercial guides also distinguish Humble offers that include standalone files from offers that contain only a key for another platform. Treat both as title-by-title searches rather than guarantees that every classic is available or DRM-free.
How do I confirm that a download is authorized?
Use the publisher or rights-holder identity shown on the exact listing, not the age of the game or a label such as “abandonware.” In the United States, the U.S. Copyright Office says whether distribution is authorized is a question of fact and cautions against standalone sales of purported backup copies.
- Search the full title and edition. Include subtitles, remasters, expansions and regional versions. Compare the publisher or rights-holder name with the original game’s credits or a reliable official page.
- Confirm the seller is offering that edition. A page that merely hosts a file, sells a “backup,” or uses an unverified marketplace description is not proof of authorization. If the rights-holder is not identified, stop and investigate before paying.
- Read the license and delivery language. Look for a personal license, a downloadable installer, a key, or a requirement to redeem elsewhere. A purchase normally grants permission to use the software under terms; it does not transfer the copyright.
- Save the order record. Keep the receipt, product name, edition, version and any permitted installer or manual. Those details help if a listing changes or support asks which build you bought.

Can I play the game offline and keep a local copy?
Offline access, DRM status and legal permission are separate questions. A DRM-free installer can still be licensed software, while a store with offline mode can still require an account or advance setup.
- GOG: The Gabriel Knight example explicitly offers a fully offline installer without Galaxy. Download it while your account is active, retain the supplied documentation and use it only within the license.
- Steam: Sign in and enable Offline Mode while online before disconnecting. Offline Mode does not bypass a title’s own online requirement, multiplayer server, subscription check or external launcher.
- itch.io: Downloadable files may work independently, but the creator’s archive can still include DRM, an activation key or an online dependency. Read the purchase page and any included instructions.
If long-term access matters, keep a legally supplied installer on an external USB drive alongside the receipt and manual. A backup is a way to preserve your licensed copy; it is not a license to redistribute the game. A portable drive is only storage, so check its capacity, connection and reliability before buying one.
What does “DRM-free” mean legally?
“DRM-free” describes access controls in the delivered files. It does not mean the copyright has expired, that you may upload the files, or that you own the game’s intellectual property. GOG’s agreement describes a personal license, and Valve’s agreement explicitly says content is licensed rather than sold.
Do not use “abandonware” as a legal shortcut. The Copyright Office’s guidance is U.S.-focused general information, not a ruling on a particular title or advice for every country; authorization depends on the facts and applicable jurisdiction. If you need to share a copy with another person, read the license instead of assuming a legally purchased installer is transferable.

Keep screenshots or a saved copy of the requirements and delivery description at checkout. If the game fails, describe the operating system, error and attempted fixes accurately; do not claim a compatibility problem that you have not observed.
What should I do if the download will not start or the game will not run?
Work from the least disruptive check to the most specific one, and preserve the original files before changing them.
