Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallGOG is the clearest store-wide choice for DRM-free games: after buying, open your purchase or account page, choose DOWNLOAD OFFLINE BACKUP GAME INSTALLERS, and save every file the game requires. itch.io is also valuable for independent games, but each creator controls the files and launch requirements. In either store, preservation means more than downloading one executable: you must collect every installer part, record the version, test the game with the network disabled, and keep at least two copies.
What “DRM-free” means in practice
Digital rights management (DRM) is a technical restriction that controls installation, copying, activation, or launching. GOG’s quality-assurance documentation defines its standard plainly: “DRM-free is a MUST, copy protection is a NO.” Under that policy, an eligible game must be playable offline without the Galaxy client, and delivery cannot impose technical restrictions on installation, copying, or activation.

That does not mean every feature works without a network. An offline installer removes the store or launcher check for the supported single-player build. It cannot bring back a multiplayer server that has been shut down, replace cloud-save synchronization, issue online achievements, or restore an account service. GOG’s terms specifically guarantee offline play for single-player content while excluding multiplayer elements that require online services.

A store account and an internet connection may be needed to complete the purchase and retrieve the files. Once the complete installer set is on your own storage, a compatible single-player version should install and run without contacting that store or its launcher.

Where to buy DRM-free games
GOG: the most predictable store-wide policy
GOG is the strongest default when your priority is a repeatable, store-wide offline workflow. Its quality-assurance policy requires DRM-free delivery, and its support instructions provide a specific way to obtain the files: select DOWNLOAD OFFLINE BACKUP GAME INSTALLERS from the game’s purchase or account page. Download all listed setup files rather than assuming the largest file is sufficient.
Read the product page before paying. A release may have separate language packs, bonus content, patches, or prerequisite components. The offline download area is the authoritative list of what GOG supplies for that edition. Keep the original files even if you later install a newer patch through a client.
itch.io: flexible, creator-controlled downloads
itch.io is particularly useful for independent games and unusual releases. Its Creator FAQ states: “No. itch.io lets users download the games exactly as you uploaded them.” That makes the individual creator’s upload the source of truth. One project may offer a standalone archive, another an installer, and another separate builds for different operating systems.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Because there is no single file layout or universal packaging rule, inspect each listing for operating-system files, launch instructions, required runtimes, and whether the download is complete on its own. itch.io’s general FAQ says most releases include DRM-free builds when those builds are also available on Steam, but “most” is not a guarantee for a particular title. Check the purchase page and the creator’s notes before you rely on a release for long-term offline use.
| Decision factor | GOG | itch.io |
|---|---|---|
| DRM policy | Store-wide quality-assurance requirement; GOG describes DRM-free delivery as mandatory. | Controlled by each creator and each project’s uploaded files. |
| Offline files | Dedicated DOWNLOAD OFFLINE BACKUP GAME INSTALLERS option lists the supplied setup components. | Files included with the transaction are shown on the purchase page; packaging differs by creator. |
| Launcher after download | Supported single-player builds are intended to run without Galaxy. | A local game can be launched by itself when the creator’s files support that; the itch.io app is optional for local play after a successful login. |
| Operating-system coverage | Varies by title and edition; use the product page and installer names. | Varies by creator; inspect every listed build and its instructions. |
| Updates | New installers and patches appear through the account or purchase page. | Creators decide whether to upload updates and how they are packaged. |
| Network-dependent features | Multiplayer and other services may still require their servers; GOG’s terms exclude those elements from the offline guarantee. | Any online service, server, account check, or web-connected feature remains dependent on the creator’s implementation. |
Check a listing before you buy
Use the following checks while you still have a refund or purchase decision available. They prevent the most common preservation mistake: buying a game described as “downloadable” and discovering later that the download is only a launcher, a partial archive, or a client-dependent build.

- Look for an explicit DRM-free statement. Do not infer DRM status from words such as “digital,” “direct download,” or “no subscription.”
- Find the actual files. A listing should expose an installer, archive, or clearly named offline package rather than only a button that installs through a client.
- Identify every platform build. Note whether the purchase includes Windows, macOS, Linux, or another platform, and whether those builds are separate downloads.
- Read launch requirements. Check for a required runtime, included redistributable, command-line option, emulator, mod loader, or first-run activation.
- Check the edition and language. Expansion packs, bonus content, language packs, and manuals may be separate files.
- Understand the update model. Determine whether patches are full installers, incremental updates, or files delivered only through a client.
- Separate single-player from online features. A DRM-free single-player executable does not promise functioning multiplayer, matchmaking, leaderboards, cloud saves, or achievements.
- Record the download size. This tells you whether your backup media has enough capacity for the complete set, including prerequisites and patches you intend to retain.
Download a complete offline set
- Finish the purchase while connected. Sign in to the store account used for the transaction and open the game’s purchase, library, or account page.
- Open the offline-download area. On GOG, select DOWNLOAD OFFLINE BACKUP GAME INSTALLERS. On itch.io, open the purchase page and review every file included with the transaction.
- List the components before downloading. Write down the main installer or archive, language files, expansion installers, patches, bonus files, manuals, and redistributables. If a file is marked for a particular operating system, keep that label.
- Download every required part. Keep the browser’s original filenames. If the store splits a large installer into several parts, save all parts in one temporary folder and do not rename them until you know the installer’s instructions.
- Capture identifying information. Beside the files, create a plain-text record containing the game title, edition, platform, version shown by the store or installer, filenames, approximate sizes, and download date.
- Preserve the original set. Copy the untouched downloads to your archive folder before installing or applying a patch. Treat that copy as the baseline you can return to.
- Test from a working copy. Install from a duplicate, not from the only preserved copy. This lets you retry after a failed installation without altering the archive.
- Verify offline operation. Disconnect the test computer from the network, install the game, launch the single-player content, create a save, quit, and reload that save. Record any feature that still asks for an online service.
GOG’s offline-installer workflow
GOG’s workflow is designed around a complete backup rather than a launcher cache. From the game’s account or purchase page, choose DOWNLOAD OFFLINE BACKUP GAME INSTALLERS. The page may present several setup files or optional components. Download the entire set for the edition you purchased, including any language or expansion files you want to preserve.
Do not delete an older installer simply because a newer one appears. A later build may change compatibility, bundled content, or included patches. Keep a versioned folder for each complete set and note which one you have tested. If you use Galaxy for convenience, use it as an update or installation tool—not as the only copy of the game.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteGOG’s quality-assurance requirement applies to the supported offline build, not to services outside the game files. A title can therefore satisfy the DRM-free policy while its multiplayer mode, cloud saves, or other connected functions remain unavailable without network access.
itch.io’s file-by-file workflow
On itch.io, open the purchase page and inspect the complete file list supplied by the creator. Download the build for each platform you care about, then read any included README or project instructions. The creator may provide a compressed archive that you extract manually, an installer, or multiple packages for different systems.
Keep the archive exactly as uploaded before extracting it. Store the extracted game separately for testing, because the archive is your original source if a file is accidentally deleted or modified. If the creator posts a new upload, retain the earlier version in its own folder and add the new version to your notes rather than overwriting the old record.

The itch.io app can launch local games and display a local library offline after you have completed a successful login. Online search and other network services still require connectivity. For the most independent setup, test the game’s own executable or documented launch command so you know whether the app is needed at all.

Test the installation without a network
A download is not proven to be a usable offline installer until it passes a disconnected installation test. Testing also exposes missing redistributables and incomplete multi-part downloads while the original files are still available.
Prepare the test
- Use a computer that meets the game’s listed operating-system and hardware requirements.
- Disable Wi-Fi and unplug Ethernet, or use a firewall rule that blocks the game and installer.
- Work from a duplicate of the archive so the preserved original remains unchanged.
- Have enough free disk space for the installer, temporary extraction files, and the installed game.
Install and launch
- Run the installer or extract the archive while disconnected.
- Install any redistributable included with the purchase or named in the documentation.
- Launch the single-player game without opening a store client.
- Start a new game or load a supplied save, create your own save, exit, and reload it.
- Write down the result, including the installed version and any unavailable online feature.
A successful test means the supported offline portion installs, launches, and retains local saves without a store or launcher check. It does not certify multiplayer servers or any service that necessarily operates online.
Build an archive you can use years later
Use descriptive folders
A predictable path makes a collection searchable and prevents different builds from being mixed. A useful pattern is Game/Platform/Version, for example ExampleGame/Windows/1.2.3. Put the installers, archives, manuals, README files, redistributables, and a text record in that version folder. Keep extracted test files in a separate subfolder so the original downloads remain obvious.
Record what you downloaded
In a plain-text file beside the archive, record the exact title and edition, platform, version, installer filenames, file sizes, download date, and any launch instructions. Note whether the build was tested with the network disabled and whether you needed a separate runtime. This information is more useful than relying on a store page that may later change its wording or file list.

Keep checksums when available
If the store or creator supplies checksums, save them in the same folder and verify the files after copying. A checksum gives you a way to detect an incomplete transfer or silent corruption without opening the installer. If no checksum is supplied, preserve the original filenames and sizes and compare those values after copying.
Maintain two independent copies
Keep one working archive and at least one additional copy in a different location you control. A second hard drive, NAS, cloud archive, or recordable optical disc can serve as the other location; choose media with enough capacity for the complete installer set, not merely the main executable. Test that the second copy can be read before you rely on it.
For optical storage, verify the capacity against the complete set before burning. GOG’s public preservation advice has specifically mentioned CD-R, DVD-R, and BD-R as possible media. Large modern installers may require multiple discs, so label each disc with the game, platform, version, and disc number.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Handle patches without losing the original
Installers and patches are separate preservation objects. Make a second copy of the original installer set before applying a patch, then apply the patch to a working installation or duplicate archive. Save the patch file, its version, and any instructions in the same versioned folder.
If a patch is cumulative, you may not need every intermediate update for a fresh installation, but retaining the files costs less than trying to recover an old version later. If a patch is incremental, keep the exact base version it expects. Your notes should state the sequence, such as “install 1.0, then apply 1.1,” rather than leaving the relationship to memory.

Do not overwrite a known-good archive with a modified game directory. A mod, configuration change, or patch can make troubleshooting difficult. Preserve a clean copy and create a separate working copy for modifications.
What an offline copy cannot preserve
| Feature | What to expect offline |
|---|---|
| Single-player campaign | Should run from a qualifying DRM-free build after the files are installed and tested. |
| Local saves | Should work if the game stores saves locally and the operating system permits access to its save directory. |
| Multiplayer | Requires the relevant servers or peer connections; an installer cannot recreate a shut-down service. |
| Cloud saves | Synchronization requires the cloud provider or store service. Local save files may still be usable. |
| Achievements and account services | Online reporting, authentication, leaderboards, and similar services remain network dependent. |
| Online search in the itch.io app | Requires connectivity even though previously authenticated local games can be launched offline. |
Troubleshoot common preservation failures
The installer asks for a launcher or login
Confirm that you downloaded the offline installer rather than a client shortcut or cached installation file. On GOG, return to the purchase page and use DOWNLOAD OFFLINE BACKUP GAME INSTALLERS. On itch.io, check whether the creator supplied a different standalone archive. If the game’s documentation explicitly requires an online service, treat that feature as outside the offline capability rather than trying to bypass it.
The installer reports a missing part
Compare your folder with the store’s complete file list. Multi-part installers must contain every numbered part in one directory, and language or expansion packages may be separate downloads. Re-download the missing file and keep the failed copy until you have confirmed the replacement’s size or checksum.
The game installs but will not launch disconnected
Repeat the test with the network disabled from the beginning. Read the included README for a required runtime or launch option, and install redistributables supplied with the purchase. If only multiplayer or another connected mode fails, test the single-player executable separately and document the limitation.
Saves work online but not offline
Look for a local-save option and verify that the test account has permission to write to the game’s save directory. Cloud synchronization cannot be tested offline; copy local saves into your archive only after identifying their location and format.
A later patch breaks your known-good build
Restore the untouched installer or clean working copy, then apply the patch separately. Keep both versions with clear folder names and notes. This gives you a reversible path instead of forcing every future installation through the newest update.
Choose a store and backup method by priority
| Your priority | Practical choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Predictable DRM-free policy | Start with GOG. | Its quality-assurance policy requires DRM-free delivery and its support page identifies a dedicated offline-installer download. |
| Independent or experimental games | Inspect itch.io listings individually. | Creators upload the files themselves, so unusual projects and formats are common, but requirements vary. |
| Long-term replayability | Download every component, test offline, and keep two copies. | A launcher library alone does not document versions or protect against later account, service, or file changes. |
| Small archive on optical media | Measure the complete installer set first. | CD-R, DVD-R, and BD-R have different capacities; a set that exceeds one disc must be split and labeled. |
| Modding or experimentation | Keep a clean original and a separate working copy. | Changes can be reversed without altering the preserved installer or baseline installation. |
Final offline-preservation checklist
- Confirm the listing explicitly describes the build as DRM-free or provides a documented offline package.
- Identify the edition, platform, version, languages, expansions, patches, and prerequisites you intend to keep.
- Download every component from the purchase page; do not rely on a launcher cache.
- Keep original filenames and create a text record with version, sizes, platform, and download date.
- Copy the untouched files before installing, patching, or modding.
- Test installation, launch, saving, and reloading with the network disabled.
- Record which features remain online-only, especially multiplayer and cloud services.
- Store the archive in a descriptive
Game/Platform/Versionfolder. - Retain supplied manuals, README files, redistributables, and checksums.
- Maintain two copies in different locations and verify that both can be read.
The durable method is straightforward: buy from a listing with a clear DRM-free or standalone-file policy, download the complete set while it is available, test it without connectivity, and preserve clean, versioned copies. GOG makes that process most consistent across a store; itch.io can provide excellent offline files when you inspect each creator’s release carefully.
