To buy Magic: The Gathering cards more safely, verify the exact item and seller before paying, keep the transaction on a marketplace with a dispute process, and save the listing and order records. For sealed products, Wizards of the Coast recommends reputable dealers and specific packaging checks; for singles, scrutinize the edition, condition, and photos. No badge, packaging detail, or price by itself guarantees authenticity.
Check the listing and seller before you buy
Start with the item, not just the platform. Read the full listing and confirm that it describes the card or product you intend to buy.

- For a single, check the card name, set or edition, language, finish, condition, quantity, and any stated alteration.
- For sealed product, confirm the product type and whether the listing is for a factory-sealed item.
- Check whether the item is a genuine Wizards of the Coast product, a proxy, or a playtest card. Wizards advises buyers to read auction fine print and warns against proxies sold as originals.
Review the seller’s history, feedback, delivery estimate, and stated return or dispute process. Compare the price with other offers, but do not treat a low price as proof of fraud—or an ordinary price as proof of authenticity. The official guidance cited here establishes no dependable price threshold or counterfeit rate.
Keep the listing and seller correspondence, and pay through the marketplace checkout rather than moving the transaction off-platform. A documented dispute route can help if an order goes wrong, but it is not a guarantee that an individual item is genuine.

Local game stores and authorized online retailers
A reputable local game store can be a useful option, especially when you want to inspect a single in person or ask for a knowledgeable opinion. For sealed products sold online in North America, Wizards recommends looking for its Authorized Internet Retailer logo. That guidance applies to sealed products in that region; it is not a universal credential for individual secondary-market cards or sellers elsewhere. TCGplayer
On TCGplayer, you can filter for sellers participating in the Wizards Play Network (WPN). TCGplayer describes WPN sellers as local game stores in Wizards’ official network and says the badge indicates a Wizards-verified local game store. Treat that as a seller identity signal, not as card-by-card authentication before shipment. TCGplayer: What are the Wizards Play Network (WPN) badges?

Other marketplaces and private sellers
For eBay, another marketplace, or a direct private sale, check the current rules for that specific transaction before paying. Do not assume that another service offers TCGplayer’s deadlines or counterfeit-review process. In a private sale, consider whether you can inspect an expensive or unusual card in person and whether the payment method leaves you a practical route to raise a dispute.

How to assess sealed boxes and packs
For North American online sealed-product purchases, look for Wizards’ Authorized Internet Retailer logo where applicable. Wizards also recommends using reputable dealers, checking for the Wizards of the Coast stamp and plastic seal on booster boxes, and inspecting booster packs for signs of resealing, including vertical heat striations. If a listing seems fraudulent, Wizards’ advice is: “If you suspect the product is fraudulent, don’t buy it.” Wizards: Verify You are Purchasing Legitimate Wizards of the Coast Products
These are screening checks, not proof that a product’s contents are genuine or untouched. A stamp, shrink-wrap, or one apparently intact seal cannot establish that on its own. If the delivered product does not match the listing, preserve the packaging and use the platform’s dispute process. Be aware that return rules can differ after opening: TCGplayer says opened sealed items cannot be returned under its policy terms. TCGplayer: What is TCGplayer’s Refund and Return policy?

What to check on expensive or unusual singles
When the edition, condition, identity, or alteration status is unclear, ask for clear, current photos of the exact card. Compare the photos with the description and retain both. If you are unsure about a high-value purchase, consider an in-person review by a reputable game store or another trusted specialist before the applicable return or dispute window closes.

There is no universal authentication procedure established by the official guidance cited here for every printing, foil treatment, or altered card. Wizards’ older Buyer Beware article discusses physical tests but warns that they are performed at the buyer’s risk and should not be used on foil cards. Because those tests can damage a card and the article dates to 2004, do not rely on them as a definitive modern check. Use a marketplace’s counterfeit-claim process or seek a qualified opinion instead.
What to do if an order is wrong or seems counterfeit
- Preserve evidence. Photograph the unopened package and its contents, keep the card and packaging, and save the listing, receipt, messages, tracking information, and delivery date.
- Contact the seller through the order. Use the marketplace’s official order or support channel and avoid taking resolution off-platform.
- Check the marketplace deadline and procedure. Rules vary by platform, so do not assume a deadline from one service applies elsewhere.
- If the purchase was on TCGplayer, act within its stated window. TCGplayer says missing or not-as-described orders must be reported within 30 calendar days after the estimated delivery date to qualify for its stated refund or replacement process. For a suspected counterfeit, open a dedicated claim: TCGplayer says it will provide a prepaid label, must receive the card for review, and will provide a full refund if the card is counterfeit. TCGplayer Safeguard and TCGplayer’s Refund and Return policy explain the applicable procedures.
- Do not treat Wizards as the refund or authentication service. Wizards says it does not replace counterfeit cards or verify cards for buyers. Its guidance points suspected-counterfeit cases toward reporting resources, including an eBay Fraud Alert for purchases made through eBay. Wizards also says submitted cards are not returned and it will not notify the submitter of the outcome. Wizards: Identifying Counterfeit Cards
What the available guidance can—and cannot—establish
The cited official and marketplace guidance does not establish a reliable percentage of MTG cards that are counterfeit, nor a risk rate for a particular price range or buying route. Make the decision based on the exact listing, seller, item, and recourse available—not an assumed prevalence statistic.
