The FREELANDER 8 is the first model under FREELANDER, a distinct brand jointly developed by Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) and Chery. JLR owns the brand and leads design; Chery contributes vehicle technology and supply-chain capabilities. China production began in 2026, and the UAE is the first announced market outside China.
What is the FREELANDER 8?
FREELANDER 8 is the first strategic nameplate of the revived FREELANDER brand. Its maker positions it as a premium intelligent all-terrain SUV. It is not described simply as a conventional Land Rover or a Chery model: it belongs to a separate brand developed by the two companies.

The name revives FREELANDER, but the available launch material does not establish the new SUV as a direct continuation of a particular earlier vehicle. Nor does it provide enough information for a complete technical comparison with other SUVs.
How is the Chery–JLR brand structured?
JLR and Chery announced a letter of intent on 19 June 2024 for a licensing arrangement under which the Chery Jaguar Land Rover (CJLR) joint venture would produce a FREELANDER electric-vehicle portfolio. The original plan specified Chery EV architecture and manufacturing in Changshu, China. The partners said they would collaborate on design, initially sell the vehicles in China through a distinct retail network, and pursue global exports over time. JLR’s 2024 announcement described FREELANDER as a growth system separate from both Chery’s existing portfolio and JLR’s modern-luxury House of Brands.

At the 2026 launch, the companies described the division of roles more specifically: JLR owns FREELANDER and its dedicated design hub leads design, while Chery supplies intelligent technology and supply-chain support. The public description calls the brand jointly developed. That structure distinguishes FREELANDER from both a standard JLR model and a vehicle sold under Chery’s existing brands. The Abu Dhabi launch announcement uses the brand line “Beyond the Legend”; FREELANDER International CEO Lucia Mao framed it as “British soul. Chinese intelligence.”
What features and specifications have been announced?
Manufacturer announcements identify several features, but they do not amount to a full specification sheet. FREELANDER and Chery Group describe the following for the FREELANDER 8:

- All-terrain system: Intelligent All-Terrain System (i-ATS) with nine modes, a virtual central differential lock and a rear electronic limited-slip differential. The FREELANDER feature announcement names the system and modes.
- Cabin and driver assistance: Chery Group’s 3 October 2026 launch announcement names a Qualcomm SA8295P cabin chip and standard L2+ driver assistance with more than 30 assistance functions. These are manufacturer-stated features, not an independent assessment of performance. Chery Group’s launch report gives the details.
- Suspension and clearance: The same Chery Group announcement lists dual-chamber air suspension with Continuously Controlled Damping and a maximum ground clearance of 266 mm for the Middle East market model. The company says specifications vary by market and trim, so 266 mm should not be assumed for every FREELANDER 8.
Chery Group also reports more than 1,000 test vehicles and over 200 vehicles dedicated to all-terrain durability testing, covering 2.15 million kilometres in those tests. These are manufacturer-reported validation figures, not independent test results. The company’s 4 August 2026 report gives the figures alongside its production update.

The 2024 plan described an electric-vehicle portfolio using Chery EV architecture. The 2026 launch material uses new-energy-vehicle language, but the available announcements do not provide a complete market-by-market powertrain lineup. They also do not establish battery capacity, electric range, charging performance, final dimensions or retail prices. Those details should be checked against an official specification for the relevant market and trim rather than inferred from the original plan.

Where will the FREELANDER 8 be sold?
Chery Group reported on 4 August 2026 that the first China mass-production FREELANDER 8 vehicles had rolled off the Changshu assembly line and that production for international markets was underway. At the global brand launch in Abu Dhabi on 29 September 2026, FREELANDER presented an international left-hand-drive variant. The company named the UAE as its first international market, with Al Tayer Motors covering Dubai and the Northern Emirates and Premier Motors covering Abu Dhabi.
The company says broader rollout will start in left-hand-drive markets before expanding to right-hand-drive and EU-specification markets. That rollout statement does not establish a customer-delivery date or confirm availability in any other specific country.

What remains unconfirmed?
The company announcements establish the brand arrangement, selected features, production milestones and intended rollout sequence. They do not establish the information a buyer would need for a complete market-specific evaluation, including final prices, delivery schedules, full powertrain and battery data, range, charging performance, dimensions, crash-test results, or warranty and service terms.

For a meaningful comparison with another SUV, use the same market and trim where possible, and compare powertrain and usable range, charging, seating and cargo space, safety results, all-terrain equipment, dealer and service coverage, warranty, and delivered price. The announced details are not enough to score those factors comprehensively.
