You can get Nintendo exposure in two ways: buy the company’s ordinary shares on the Tokyo Stock Exchange under code 7974, or, where your broker supports it, buy the US over-the-counter unsponsored ADR NTDOY. The first route is the home-market listing and requires Japanese-market access; the second trades in US dollars but is a depositary receipt with its own spread, liquidity, conversion and fee considerations.

Nintendo’s investor-relations stock information is dated March 31, 2026; quotes, availability and fees can change, so verify the live instrument with your regulated broker before trading.
Nintendo’s two investable tickers
Nintendo Co., Ltd.’s primary common stock trades on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Prime Market under stock code 7974. Nintendo states that one trading unit is 100 shares. A broker must provide access to the Japanese market, and its order ticket should identify the exchange as Tokyo or TSE.

US investors may also find NTDOY, an OTC unsponsored American depositary receipt. Citi’s current 2026 depositary record links NTDOY to ordinary ticker 7974 in Japan at a 1:4 ordinary-to-depositary-receipt ratio: four NTDOY receipts correspond to one 7974 ordinary share before fees and other adjustments. NTDOY is not a second class of Nintendo ordinary share; it is a receipt issued through a depositary arrangement.

The code, market and instrument type matter. Searching only for “Nintendo” can produce a wrong exchange, a similarly named security or an instrument your account cannot trade.
Which route fits your situation?
Buy 7974 when you want the home-market listing
The Tokyo listing gives you direct exposure to the ordinary share traded in Japan. It is the route to consider if your broker offers TSE execution, you are comfortable funding or converting into yen, and you want to avoid the additional depositary layer of an ADR. Your broker may require separate foreign-market permissions, risk disclosures or a higher minimum order value.

The practical minimum can be affected by Nintendo’s stated board-lot structure. Some brokers enforce the 100-share trading unit; others offer an odd-lot service with different execution rules, pricing or fees. Do not assume that an advertised fractional-share feature applies to Japanese equities.

NTDOY can be operationally simpler for an eligible US account because the quote and settlement are in US dollars. It may also be the only Nintendo instrument shown by a broker that does not provide Tokyo access. The convenience comes with trade-offs: OTC liquidity and spreads can differ from the Tokyo market, the receipt tracks a yen-denominated underlying share, and a depositary may deduct fees or adjust distributions.
For investors outside the US, NTDOY still adds a US-dollar conversion layer. A pound-, euro- or other-currency investor is exposed to the relationship between the home currency and the dollar as well as the underlying yen exposure, even though the order is placed in dollars.
How to buy Nintendo shares step by step
- Confirm residence and account eligibility. Use a broker regulated for your country of residence. Read its international-equities and OTC disclosures and confirm that your account type is permitted to hold the chosen instrument.
- Check the exact market. For direct ownership, search for Nintendo Co., Ltd. with code 7974 and verify that the exchange is Tokyo or TSE and that the security is an ordinary share. For the ADR route, search NTDOY and verify that the result is the OTC unsponsored ADR, not a similarly named listing.
- Complete onboarding checks. The broker may request identity documents, tax-residency information, suitability answers and permissions for foreign or OTC trading. Approval can be separate from opening the basic account.
- Fund in a supported currency. Deposit money using the broker’s accepted method. Before converting, check the quoted FX rate, markup and whether the broker converts automatically at execution or lets you choose when to exchange.
- Review the order ticket. Confirm ticker, exchange, currency, quantity, order type, estimated consideration, commission, FX charge and any market-data or settlement fee. Check the live quote rather than relying on a delayed search result.
- Choose an order type deliberately. A limit order lets you specify the highest price you will pay or the lowest price at which you will sell. This can be useful when an overseas or OTC market has a wide spread or limited displayed depth. A market order can execute at a materially different price when liquidity is thin.
- Submit and monitor execution. Tokyo and US OTC sessions occur at different local times. An order entered while the selected market is closed may wait, expire or be handled under the broker’s next-session policy. Confirm whether the order filled in full, partially or not at all.
- Save the records. Keep the contract note, execution price, quantity, FX conversion, commission, depositary charge and dividend statements. Those records support cost-basis calculations and local tax reporting.

Neither route is automatically cheaper or better. Compare the complete transaction path, including conversion and custody costs, not just the displayed share price.

Costs to check before placing an order
International investing can cost more than domestic investing, according to Investor.gov. Ask the broker for the amount or formula for each item that applies to your account:

- Custody or safekeeping charge: an ongoing fee some brokers apply to foreign securities.
- Market-data fee: a charge for live Tokyo or OTC quotes rather than delayed prices.
- Settlement or handling fee: an amount attached to cross-border processing.
- OTC spread: the difference between the quoted bid and ask for NTDOY; a wider spread raises the cost of entering and exiting.
- ADR or depositary fee: a charge that can be deducted from proceeds or dividends under the depositary program.
- Corporate-action charges: possible fees when a dividend, conversion or other issuer event is processed.
Request an all-in estimate for a proposed order size. A zero-commission headline does not establish that FX, custody, settlement, OTC or depositary costs are zero.
Currency, trading hours and liquidity
Currency exposure does not disappear in the ADR
A 7974 purchase is priced in yen, so your return in pounds, dollars or another home currency changes with both Nintendo’s share price and the exchange rate. NTDOY is quoted in dollars, but its value still reflects the yen-denominated ordinary share and the depositary ratio. A non-dollar investor therefore adds a home-currency-to-dollar conversion to the underlying yen exposure.
The two markets are open at different times
Tokyo and the US OTC market do not share the same trading hours or holidays. When one market is closed, the other may continue to move, leaving the displayed price temporarily out of line with the latest price of the underlying share. Check the broker’s session status, quote timestamp and order-expiry setting before submitting an order.

Liquidity affects execution
Liquidity is the ability to trade promptly near the displayed price. Investor.gov identifies liquidity differences as a risk of international investing. Thin OTC trading can produce a wide bid-ask spread, partial fills or a larger price movement from a modest order. Tokyo liquidity and the broker’s access route can also vary by time of day. A limit order and a willingness to wait for a suitable quote can reduce, but cannot eliminate, execution risk.
What you receive as a shareholder or ADR holder
7974 ordinary shares
With the Japanese listing, the position is recorded as ordinary shares through the Japanese market’s settlement arrangements. Corporate actions, voting procedures, notices and dividend processing follow the broker’s handling of Japanese securities. Ask how the broker communicates issuer notices and whether it passes through voting or election instructions.
NTDOY receipts
An ADR is a depositary receipt, not direct registration of the Japanese ordinary share in your name. The depositary handles the relationship with the underlying shares and converts distributions into the receipt’s currency. Dividend cash can be reduced by applicable withholding, conversion costs and depositary fees. The broker’s ADR fee schedule and the Citi program record are the appropriate places to confirm current charges and event procedures.
The 1:4 ratio also matters when you compare prices: one receipt represents one-quarter of an ordinary share before fees and other adjustments. A price comparison that ignores the ratio can make the two quotes appear inconsistent.

Tax considerations by residence
Tax results depend on your country of residence, account wrapper, instrument, income type and personal circumstances. Brokers can provide transaction and dividend statements, but they generally cannot determine your complete tax liability. Keep the acquisition value in the currency and format required by your tax authority, including documented FX rates and fees.

US residents
A US broker may be able to process an order for a company that trades only on a foreign securities market, according to Investor.gov. If you buy 7974, confirm how the broker reports foreign holdings, dividends, conversions and realised gains. If you buy NTDOY, confirm how the broker reports ADR dividends, depositary deductions and cost basis. The correct forms and treatment depend on your account and circumstances, so use the broker’s tax documents and obtain professional advice for an uncertain or material position.
UK residents
GOV.UK states: “You do not normally have to pay Stamp Duty or SDRT (Stamp Duty Reserve Tax) if you buy foreign shares outside the UK.” That rule does not remove every possible tax. GOV.UK also notes that other taxes may apply and that Capital Gains Tax may be due when shares are sold. Establish whether your chosen instrument and execution venue meet the foreign-share conditions, and check dividend and gains reporting for your account type.
Residents of other countries
There is no single worldwide treatment for Japanese shares or a US ADR. Check your local rules for foreign-asset reporting, dividend withholding, capital gains, currency conversion and tax-advantaged accounts. Your broker’s country eligibility, treaty documentation and account terms can change the outcome. If the broker cannot explain which statements it supplies, ask a local tax professional before trading.

Risks beyond the share price
- Currency risk: exchange-rate moves can outweigh a gain in the local-market quote when measured in your home currency.
- Market and company risk: Nintendo’s share price can fall, and owning a single company creates concentration risk.
- Liquidity and spread risk: a displayed quote may not be available for your full order, particularly in an OTC market.
- Information differences: foreign issuers may publish on a different schedule, in a different language or under reporting conventions unfamiliar to you. Investor.gov lists information gaps as an international-investing risk.
- Legal and operational differences: investor protections, settlement procedures and practical legal remedies can differ from those in your home market.
- Depositary risk: an ADR adds a depositary intermediary, whose fees and event procedures affect the receipt.
- Access risk: a broker can restrict new purchases, remove a security, change its permissions or suspend an OTC instrument.
Common problems and how to resolve them
The search returns several Nintendo symbols
Open the security details and match the code, exchange, currency and instrument description. Select 7974 only when the exchange is Tokyo or TSE and select NTDOY only when the description identifies the OTC unsponsored ADR.
The broker blocks the order
Read the rejection message. It may indicate missing foreign-market permission, an account-type restriction, insufficient settled cash, an unsupported country, a board-lot rule or an OTC eligibility requirement. Contact the broker’s trading desk and ask which permission or document is missing; do not substitute an unverified symbol.
The price looks very different from the other ticker
Check the 1:4 receipt ratio, the quote timestamps, the yen-dollar exchange rate and the bid-ask spread. A stale OTC quote or a market that is currently closed can exaggerate the difference.
Only a partial fill appears
Review the order’s remaining quantity and time-in-force. A limit order may be waiting for a matching quote. Decide whether to leave it open, revise it or cancel it according to your plan; avoid repeatedly crossing a wide spread without checking the new estimate.
A dividend is smaller than expected
Compare the issuer’s announced amount with the depositary statement. For NTDOY, the receipt ratio, currency conversion, withholding and depositary fee can all affect the cash credited. Ask the broker for the event statement if a deduction is not clear.

- Confirm your residence, account type and eligibility for foreign or OTC trading.
- Identify whether you intend to buy 7974 in Tokyo or NTDOY in the US OTC market.
- Verify the exchange, currency, quote timestamp and instrument description on the order ticket.
- For 7974, ask how the broker handles Nintendo’s stated 100-share trading unit and any odd-lot service.
- For NTDOY, confirm the unsponsored status, 1:4 ratio and current depositary-fee schedule.
- Calculate commission, FX, custody, market-data, settlement, spread and depositary costs that apply.
- Check the market’s opening status and use a limit price when the spread or liquidity warrants caution.
- Understand how dividends, corporate actions and tax statements will be delivered.
- Record the execution, FX rate and fees for reporting.
- Review the position size against your risk tolerance; access to a foreign market does not remove company or currency risk.
The appropriate route is therefore a function of access, total cost, currency preference, liquidity and administration—not simply which ticker is easiest to type. Verify all live details with the regulated broker before sending the order.
