Test the controller before and after calibration.
Calibration can correct how Windows interprets an axis’s center or range. It cannot repair worn analog-stick hardware, a damaged cable, Bluetooth interference, or a game with an unsuitable dead zone. If the controller still drifts in Windows and several games after calibration, the problem is probably not calibration.

Before you calibrate
- Turn off or disconnect the controller from a console, phone, or another computer.
- Connect it directly to the PC with a known-good data-capable USB cable. A charge-only cable may not allow Windows to detect it.
- Avoid an unpowered USB hub while diagnosing the problem.
- Close games, Steam Input, DS4Windows, reWASD, and other controller utilities for the first test.
- Wait for Windows to detect the controller, then open the Game Controllers panel.
USB provides the best baseline because it separates controller behavior from Bluetooth pairing, interference, and wireless adapter problems. Microsoft also recommends testing controller inputs before launching a game.
Test the controller in Windows 10
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
joy.cpland press Enter. - Select the controller in the list and click Properties.
- Open the Test tab.
This legacy Game Controllers panel is Windows 10’s most useful general-purpose diagnostic screen. Microsoft documents the Game Controllers properties route for testing controller input.

With the controller untouched, check whether the axis indicators remain still and whether both sticks return close to the center. Then:
- Move each stick slowly through a complete circle.
- Push each stick fully in every direction.
- Press the face buttons, shoulder buttons, D-pad directions, and stick-click buttons.
- Pull both triggers slowly from minimum to maximum and release them.
- Check whether any button remains active after release.
Record what you see before changing anything. Repeating the same checks afterward makes it easier to tell whether calibration helped.
What a normal result looks like
- The sticks stay close to center when untouched.
- Movement is smooth rather than jumping or cutting out.
- Full stick travel reaches the expected edges.
- Buttons activate once and release cleanly.
- Triggers move progressively from zero to full travel.
Calibrate the controller with joy.cpl
- In the controller’s Properties window, open Settings.
- Click Calibrate…, if the button is present.
- Follow the calibration wizard exactly.
- When the wizard asks you to leave controls centered, do not touch the sticks or triggers.
- When prompted, move each requested axis through its complete range.
- Finish the wizard, return to the Test tab, and repeat the same stick, trigger, button, and D-pad checks.
The calibration wizard teaches Windows how to interpret the controller’s neutral position and usable axis range. It is not a universal feature: some modern controllers, drivers, and virtual devices do not expose the traditional Calibrate… button.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDo not deliberately hold a stick off-center during the neutral-position step. An incorrect center reference can make the controller feel worse. Repeatedly recalibrating a physically drifting controller can also create a misleading or unstable result.
How to reset a bad calibration
If calibration makes the controller less accurate:
- Open
joy.cplagain. - Select the controller and choose Properties.
- Open Settings.
- Click Reset to default, if shown.
- Apply the change, disconnect the controller, and reconnect it.
- Test it again with Steam and other remapping software closed.
If the reset option is unavailable, close the controller software in use, restart Windows, and retest over USB. A virtual controller may be controlled by its mapper rather than by the legacy Windows calibration page.

Calibration is not the same as a dead zone
These settings solve different problems:
| Setting | What it changes | Where it is usually configured |
|---|---|---|
| Center calibration | Where Windows considers the stick’s neutral position | Windows, when the device exposes a calibration wizard |
| Range calibration | How Windows interprets minimum and maximum axis travel | Windows or controller software |
| Dead zone | How much movement is ignored around center | The game, Steam Input, or a mapper |
| Response curve or sensitivity | How quickly input reaches maximum | The game, Steam Input, or controller software |
| Firmware configuration | Device-level behavior, mappings, or compatibility | Xbox Accessories or PlayStation Accessories |
A game can still show drift even when Windows reports a stable center if the game uses a very small dead zone, reads a second virtual controller, or applies its own response curve.
Xbox controller troubleshooting
Xbox One and Xbox Series controllers generally provide predictable Windows compatibility. Depending on the model and PC hardware, they can connect by USB or Bluetooth.
Use the Xbox Accessories app when you need to update firmware or use supported button-mapping features. It is a first-party configuration tool, not a repair utility: it cannot restore a worn analog stick.
For an Xbox controller, test both triggers in Properties > Test. Some controller generations expose trigger axes differently, so do not assume every device will display identical indicators. If the controller works by USB but not Bluetooth, investigate pairing, the PC’s Bluetooth adapter, and wireless interference before blaming calibration.
DualShock 4 troubleshooting
A DualShock 4 can connect to Windows through a compatible micro-USB cable or the official wireless adaptor. A wired connection is the simplest diagnostic starting point.

Windows may detect the controller without every game recognizing it as an Xbox/XInput controller. A game with native PlayStation support may work directly; another may need Steam Input or an input mapper such as DS4Windows. Use only one translation layer at a time. Running Steam Input and DS4Windows together can create duplicate or conflicting virtual controllers.
DualSense troubleshooting
DualSense supports USB and Bluetooth connections on 64-bit Windows 10. Detection in joy.cpl confirms that Windows sees an input device, but it does not guarantee PlayStation button prompts, haptics, adaptive triggers, or complete compatibility in a particular game.
Use PlayStation Accessories on Windows for DualSense firmware updates and supported configuration. Advanced features remain game-dependent and may require USB or specific software support. The app is not a universal replacement for Steam Input or a game-specific compatibility layer.
Calibrate or configure the controller in Steam
Steam Input is a separate input layer from Windows calibration. It may translate a PlayStation controller into an Xbox-style virtual controller, so Steam’s readings and settings do not necessarily represent the physical device exactly as Windows sees it.
- Open Steam.
- Go to Settings > Controller.
- Select the detected controller.
- Open the input test or calibration controls shown for that device.
- Calibrate or adjust the controller there if necessary.
- Test the game with Steam Input enabled and disabled, one configuration at a time.
Steam documents its controller calibration route through its controller settings. Do not run Steam Input, DS4Windows, reWASD, and another virtual-controller utility simultaneously unless you specifically understand which device each layer is creating.

When calibration does not fix stick drift
Persistent physical drift is likely when:
- An axis moves while the stick is untouched.
- The stick does not return to the same center position.
- The fault appears over both USB and Bluetooth.
- The same behavior appears in
joy.cpl, Steam Input, and multiple games. - Calibration masks the issue only temporarily.
Increase the affected game’s dead zone only as a temporary workaround. A larger dead zone can hide minor drift but reduces precision near the center. If the fault follows the controller to another PC or console, repair or replacement is more realistic than further calibration. A USB cable can solve detection or wireless-isolation problems, but it cannot fix mechanical stick wear.

The controller is not listed in joy.cpl
- Disconnect and reconnect it.
- Try another known-good data cable and another USB port.
- Restart Windows.
- Close Steam, DS4Windows, reWASD, and manufacturer utilities.
- Remove duplicate or stale controller entries if Windows shows them.
- Try the controller on another PC or console.
If it works elsewhere, investigate the original PC’s USB port, Bluetooth adapter, driver, or software stack. If it fails everywhere, suspect the controller or cable.
There is no Calibrate button
The button may be absent because the driver does not provide the traditional calibration page, the device is being presented through a virtual input layer, or the controller does not expose all of its axes to the legacy panel. This does not automatically mean the controller is faulty.
Use the controller’s first-party software, Steam Input, or a reputable mapper where appropriate. Avoid random driver-updater and registry-cleaner programs.

Check whether the game supports controllers and whether it expects XInput rather than DirectInput. Then check the game’s controller and dead-zone settings, Steam Input’s state, and whether DS4Windows or another mapper is creating a duplicate device. Incorrect button prompts do not necessarily mean the controller is failing; a game may be receiving input through a translation layer.

Test a second game with all remapping utilities closed. If the controller works in joy.cpl and another game, the original game’s compatibility or configuration is the more likely cause.
The sticks look fine in Windows, but the character still moves
Possible causes include a game dead zone that is too small, a custom Steam response curve, a second virtual controller, or intermittent drift that does not appear during a short test. Test over USB, close all mappers, and compare the behavior in another game.
The triggers are wrong or missing
Controllers can expose triggers as separate axes, a combined axis, or a game-specific mapping. Check both triggers in the Windows Test tab, then test through Steam Input or the game’s native controller support. The calibration wizard will not necessarily display every controller’s triggers in the same way.
A reliable troubleshooting order
- Connect directly by USB with a data-capable cable.
- Test in
joy.cpland record the results. - Calibrate once if Calibrate… is available.
- Reset to default if the result becomes worse.
- Update firmware with Xbox Accessories or PlayStation Accessories where applicable.
- Test with remapping software closed.
- Use Steam Input or DS4Windows only when the game needs that compatibility layer.
- Compare another game, another connection mode, or another PC.
- Use a dead-zone adjustment only as a workaround for minor drift.
- Repair or replace the controller when the fault follows it across devices and software.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I calibrate a PS5 controller in Windows 10?
Yes, if the DualSense exposes a calibration page through Windows. Connect it by USB, open joy.cpl, select it, and check Properties > Settings. If Windows does not provide Calibrate…, use PlayStation Accessories for firmware or Steam Input for supported game-level configuration.
Can I calibrate an Xbox Series controller on PC?
Often, yes, through joy.cpl when the controller’s driver exposes the wizard. Use Xbox Accessories for firmware updates and supported button mapping, then test the controller in Windows and in the affected game.
Does Windows calibration change the controller’s hardware?
No. It changes how Windows interprets the controller’s input. It cannot restore a worn potentiometer, repair a damaged trigger, or fix a defective cable.
Should I use Steam Input or DS4Windows?
Use Steam Input for Steam games when it provides the compatibility or remapping you need. Use DS4Windows when a non-Steam game needs a virtual Xbox-style controller. Avoid running both at once.
