There is no verified way to capture a tsuchinoko: the creature is part of Japanese folklore and modern cryptid culture, not a scientifically confirmed species. Stories describe searches and supposed specimens, but the sources available do not establish a distinct animal or a proven trap, bait, or handling method. If you encounter a real snake or other wildlife, do not try to catch it; observe from a safe distance and ask local authorities or a qualified wildlife professional for advice.
What a tsuchinoko is—and what the evidence establishes
The tsuchinoko is a legendary reptile-like creature associated with Japanese folklore. A Takarazuka City page preserves a local tale about a strange snake known by several regional names, including a claim within the story that such creatures had been reported but not captured. That is a record of folklore, not a verified sighting log or systematic history of attempted captures. Takarazuka City’s local tale.

Scholarly accounts discuss purported specimens, but they do not confirm a separate species. A chapter from the University of California Press recounts a biology professor identifying one supposed specimen as a malformed grass snake. A University of Vienna chapter describes another reported specimen that a biologist considered probably a tiger keelback, though not a normal one. These interpretations are accounts of particular claims, not proof that tsuchinoko exist as a distinct animal. Why there is no reliable capture method
The available sources do not verify a capture, trap, bait, or handling technique for tsuchinoko. Treat capture stories as folklore or unconfirmed reports—not as instructions that have been shown to work. Setting traps or attempting to handle an unidentified animal could injure you or the animal, and may violate local rules.
If you want to document a possible sighting, keep your distance and note what you can safely observe, such as the location and time. Do not approach, touch, trap, feed, or disturb the animal; do not trespass to pursue it. A photograph taken from a safe distance may help a qualified local expert assess an ordinary wildlife identification, but it cannot by itself establish a new species.

What to do if you encounter an actual snake
- Keep clear. Do not try to catch, corner, touch, or kill it. Move away calmly and keep other people and pets at a distance.
- Record only what is safe. If you can do so without approaching or disturbing it, note where and when you saw it and take a distant photograph.
- Ask the right local authority. Contact the relevant municipal or wildlife authority, or a qualified wildlife professional, for identification and location-specific advice. Rules can depend on the species, place, purpose, and circumstances.
- Do not assume a general rule covers every case. Japan’s Ministry of the Environment explains that capture of wild birds and mammals is generally prohibited except under hunting rules or with authorization. Its guidance does not resolve every question about snakes or every local situation; consult the appropriate authority before taking action. See the Ministry’s overview of the capture permit system and wildlife protection and management information.
For cultural background
For readers interested in the folklore rather than capture techniques, Michael Dylan Foster’s Pandemonium and Parade: Japanese Monsters and the Culture of Yōkai provides scholarly cultural context, including discussion of tsuchinoko accounts. See the University of California Press book page.
