The real-world name can be confusing: Fishing Planet’s in-game location and fish entry are game mechanics. Colorado Parks and Wildlife says real golden trout are native to California’s Upper Kern River drainage, and that hatchery fish were stocked in Colorado and other Rocky Mountain states beginning in the 1970s. Start with a spinner and a slow retrieve
- Travel to Rocky Lake and go to Ferntastic Fishing.
- Equip a spinning rod and spinner.
- Cast near the logs and use a straight, slow retrieve, following the tutorial’s general trout advice.
- If you do not get a bite, try another lure or bait listed for Colorado Golden Trout rather than assuming one exact setup works in every situation.
The tutorial’s spinner method is a useful first attempt, not a species-specific guarantee. The fish entry lists narrow spoons, nano spoons, spinners, nano spinners, and soft baits—including shads, grubs, and worms—as preferred lures. Its preferred baits are flies, mayflies, grasshoppers, crickets, dragonflies, and spawn sack. These are in-game tackle names; the sources do not establish a universal best option.

For the Rocky Trial, use barbless tackle and release the fish
If you are completing the Rocky Trial, its stated tackle options are a barbless spoon or spinner. The challenge requires catch and release, so release the Colorado Golden Trout after catching it. The Rocky Lake page also says trophy and unique Colorado Golden Trout must be released under the listed basic-license rules; follow the rules shown in your current game.
Check access, license rules, and fish size
The tutorial describes its Rocky Lake trout progression at level 5 and says a basic Colorado license is available from level 5. Verify both access and license requirements in the current map and license screens, since game progression can change with updates.
